Permission was granted and the Cardinal was very positive in his remarks commending the people of the National Shrine and those involved in the Master Plan. He referred to the National Shrine of the Little Flower Parish as a “Landmark Parish in the Archdiocese of Detroit.” The Cardinal also permitted us to continue to process our campaign funds for the project through the CSA, exempting them from the 6% Archdiocesean tax. This is a big help in our financing the project. We are now in a position to move forward with the connector from the church to the new parking lot and the future site of a parish center. This connector is more than a simple hallway. I believe we will find that it will be more like Main Street for the parish. It will connect the church, adoration chapel, new office entrance, gift shop and gathering space. Once it is completed, the entrance to the parish offices will be in the new connector. Parking for the offices will be in the new 12 Mile Road parking lot. It will completely reorientate the offices of the parish. At the same time, work is moving forward on the total refurbishing of the main science classroom of the high school. The work being done will dramatically enhance the science programs, providing them with up-to-date and state-of-the- art facilities. New Sculpture of Saint Thérèse Also this past week, a 1,800 lb. bronze statue of Saint Thérèse arrived. It is the gift of world-famous sculpter Timothy P. Schmalz to the National Shrine of the Little Flower. The statue is the original bronze casting of Tim’s conception of the teenage Saint Thérèse writing her poems to the Lord as her words take flight as angels and rise to heaven. The angels’ wings take shape as petals to form a rose, the symbol of love beauty, and her sending flowers to earth in the form of prayers answered. The sculpture is over 6 feet in height, 4 ½ feet wide and 32 inches in depth. At the present time, the sculpture will remain in the crate until it is placed in the gathering area of the connector. Once it is placed and dedicated, miniatures of this wonderful work of art will become available. Tim’s work is found all over the world. A statue of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha is found at the Shrine of the Cross in the Woods in Indian River. His statue of Saint Juan Diego is at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. Other works can be found in Rome, Bethlehem, Ireland, and throughout the world. We are very privileged to have one of his original works here at the National Shrine of the Little Flower. You can learn more about the artist and his works at www.sculpturebytps.com. Catholic Services Appeal As of Tuesday this past week, 909 parish families have responded by sending in their CSA pledge card. Of these, 837 families have pledged $147,644.00 for this year’s CSA. This is 82% of our parish target of $181,087.00. This means we have $33,443 to go to reach our target. Everything after that is returned to the parish without tax. Given the fact that we have been given permission to use the CSA tax-free status for our fundraising efforts for the Master Plan, we should make every effort to exceed our target. Please make your pledge as soon as possible. Simply fill out your pledge card and put it in the collection basket or mail or drop it off to the parish office. Even if you are unable to make a gift or pledge at this time, please mark your card accordingly and return it to the parish office. This helps us keep records up to date and will save us having to Rosie, Carlito and Saba With Father Maka’s tender loving care and his stern discipline, Saba is turning out to be a wonderful and intelligent dog. However, it seems as though she is developing some problems with her joints which could become serious in the future. We all wish her well and that everything works out OK. Growing in Faith as a Family . . . Elementary...

12th Sunday in OrdinaryTime: “Do you not yethave faith?”Job 38:1, 8-11, 2Cor 5:14-17,& Mark 4:35-41

In the first reading God speaks to

Job through the storm, giving a clear

picture of the almighty power of our

Creator. God has control over the sea

and sky. In the Gospel reading we find the disciples in a boat on the Sea of

Galilee with Jesus. A violent storm hits, frightening the men aboard. The

disciples cry out to the sleeping Lord, asking, “Teacher, do you not care thatwe are perishing?” After miraculously calming the seas, Jesus turns to His

disciples and asks, “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?”The disciples were filled with awe following Jesus’ miracle and questioned

who this man they knew as their friend was. Still tied to human understanding

the disciples were unable to comprehend the presence of God among them.

The same could be said of us. We have the power and presence of Christ

before us in the Eucharist, yet how many recognize the Almighty in our midst?

Through the working of the Holy Spirit, our eyes are opened to the miracles

of God in our daily lives, but how many take the time to notice? With our

lives so full of activities, not only our own but our children’s, we rarely have

time to take a moment’s rest and have prioritized God right out of our lives.

Take time each day this week to calm the storms of our busy lives, taking

notice of the peace that grows in our hearts when we let Christ enter and

allow His love to work in us.

Did You Know? Our Catholic Traditions…The Miracles of Jesus

Miracles are extraordinary events that cannot be explained. The word

“miracle” comes from the Latin, miraculum, and from mirari, which means

“to wonder.” Miracles fall into four major categories: physical healings such

as curing the blind, exorcisms which include driving out demons, resurrecting

the dead as found in the raising of Lazarus, and the nature miracles, such as

calming the storm. These wonders are performed through the power of God

the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and are signs of His presence. Those who

witnessed the miracles grew in faith and love, giving testimony to those

around them.

Fiesta! MemoriesThis year 150 children in kindergarten-fifth

grade joined in the fun of learning about Jesus

through Scripture, song, games, and crafts.

Blankets were made to send to missions and

memories were made that will last a lifetime. We

learned through song, crafts, games and skits that

Jesus is central to our life and that our relationship

with Him forms the base for our relationship with

others. Thanks to our adult Group Leaders and the

fifty 7th-12th grade Crew Leaders. We could not

have done it without you!

Youth Ministry and Adult Religious Formation

National Shrine Youth Group Mission Trip Update:Please pray for the National Shrine youth and youth leadership as they

embark on their mission trip to eastern Kentucky. While on the mission trip,

the youth and adults will spend their days at work sites participating in home

renovation projects for underprivileged families or senior citizens. The

residents of the homes we work on are always so grateful for the teams that

come to their assistance. Our youth will also run friendly neighborhood Kiddie

Camps where local children come and spend the day with the Youthworks

campers and experience firsthand God’s immense love for them. In addition

to these events they will be visiting area nursing homes and giving attention

to the residents in these homes. Finally, their evenings will be spent in group

activities together as teens from all over the country experience the local

culture and take part in exciting and fun adventures. As you can see, this

week will be jam-packed with a variety of experiences. While our National

Shrine Youth Group will return tired, they will be happy knowing that they

reached out to others, bringing Christ’s message of love to those in need.

There’s nothing quite like the mission trip!

Catechist Formation Workshop“Who and What is a Catechist?”(Formation Topic #9 )Wednesday, June 28, 7-8:30 pm,Conference Center

All those interested in being a Catechist and

those current Catechists in need of this formation

topic are invited to explore how our tradition of

handing down the faith developed. RSVP to

[email protected] or call 248.541.5133 if

you are planning on attending. Cost for the

evening is $10. Please make checks payable to the

National Shrine of the Little Flower. Money will be

collected the night of the presentation. There is

no fee for currently active National Shrine

catechists.

Is God Calling You to be aCatechist? Then You Should beCalling Us!

The word “Catechist” means “to echo.” Called

to be witnesses of the faith through our baptism,

Catechists help to guide others in the growth of

faith. While parents are the primary educators of

their children, Catechists play an important role in

the ministry of religious formation. Catechists and

Youth Ministers are involved in many aspects of

formation, from instructing in the classrooms to

assisting at retreats and organizing Cross

Connection Ministry service opportunities. On-

sight formation training will be available this spring

and fall. If you are interested in being a part of the

’06-’07 Catechetical or Youth Ministry team, please

contact the Religious Formation Office at

248.541.5133 or email Judy Maten at

[email protected].
