Pote’s Notes! BY RICHARD FLOYD

CSSA in Cedar Rapids, Iowa was outstanding. I want to extend a special thanks to the Aides and especially John and Sherrill Nelson for all the hard work in planning and making the Hospi-

tality Room a huge success. As noted in this magazine, Ararat did well in the trophy department. All the practice really paid off. Great job Ole Cars, Patrol, Provost Shooting Team, and Oriental Band. The Divan really enjoyed dressing out and playing with the OB. I’m sure there are pictures somewhere.

The Luau was a great success. Again there are pictures in this magazine. Some good and some are rather questionable. I think the swim team needs to keep their day jobs.

I’d like to congratulate our parade units for winning 1st place for best themed entry at the Parkville Days parade.

On September 10 we are having the Potentate’s Golf Tournament dedicated to the memory of Noble Jim Runyan. Get your teams together and come out for a fun day of golf, food and prizes. The Family Picnic is on September 23rd at Longview Lake, Shelter No. 3 from 12 noon to 4:00 pm. Also, don’t forget we have a Ceremonial in October.

Get your candidate ready. We are looking for volunteers to help us with our “Top 21” Projects at the Temple. Please contact me at 816-985-0776 if you are willing to offer your assistance. Thank you in

advance. Fraternally,Richard Floyd Potentate, Ararat Shrine, 2012

BLUE SPRINGS SHRINE CLUBBy Fred Harle, P.P.

They always say, “April Showers BringMay Flowers.” Well, here it is April 10th,haven’t seen much rain here in our greatcity of Blue Springs, MO, but you knowwhat, if you are like me those May flowersare already starting to bloom. You knowthe kind I’m talking about, those pretty lit-tle yellow flowers that we spend a smallfortune trying to eliminate from our yardevery year. Yep, they are called dande-lions. If you don’t have any I’ll be morethan happy to bring you some of the onesfrom my front yard. That is just before Itry to get rid of them.

Today Jennie’s brother Kenny and hisLady Emma who live in Warrensburg, MOdrove up to see us. We met at Bob Evan’sRestaurant in Lee’s Summit, after whichall four of us visited the Swap Meet. Wow,what a super extravaganza. An even big-ger surprise was to be greeted by Ill. SirKevin Sleyster and being chauffeured byour Recorder, Mike Wheeler. Upon enter-ing the rear gate we were greeted by thehardest working Shriner I know , NobleMac McWilliams. Try and keep up withthis Noble and you’ll find it’ s impossible. Thanks Mac for all that you do for Ararat.

Let me tell you about our March BSSCmeeting. To begin with, our meetings withNoble Bill Fickle at the helm just get bet-ter and better . Following the usual open -ing ceremonies for our Shrine Club, we getdown to the business of trying to catch thefatted calf so to speak. See picture of ourDivan Liaison Officer, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby followed by alegion of hungry Shriners. We also treatour ladies okay . Please note picture withladies, Carol Newport, Vivian Snell,Marguerite Merryman, and Pat Stansell.

Thank you ladies for continuing to shareBSSC with all the rest of us.

Our President, Bill Fickle arranged aspectacular program for our entertainment.Jordan Mitchell, a member of DeMolay, presented a Ceremony of Life in full form.Wow, super impressive, you could hear apin drop. What a treat to see and hear sucha talented young man.

We treat our dignitaries with respect, and it’s always a pleasure to put out the oldBSSC welcome mat for any and all templeofficers. Please don’t wait for a specialinvite. The door is always open and wewant you to come and join us. See photoof President Bill Fickle, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby, and AmbassadorBud Higginbotham.

Our good buddy Noble Lou Sohn hadsome stents inserted close to his heart andhe is progressing great. He heard aboutPast President Bill Clinton doing okaywith his so he got some.

Last, but also a very important part ofour BSSC team is Noble James Gar gotta. He puts together our club newsletter , sec-ond to none, that keeps all our membersinformed about what’s going to happen, and what has happened. Not only aboutanything and everything in and about ourclub, but other clubs, uniformed units, andour temple in general. If you don’t believeit come see for yourself! BSSC meets onthe 4th Monday night of each month at6:30 pm in the American Legion Buildingon 7 Hwy in Blue Springs, MO. Call us,we’ll tell you how to get here.

That’s enough for this time! So untilnext time, a hug doesn’ t cost anything togive or get. Think about it!!!!!!

Hospital Van DriversIf you are a member of Ararat Shrine you are encouraged to call the Hospital Transpor-

tation Office (816) 923-5429 or (816) 923-1319 and become one of those men who transport our children to the St. Louis Hospital. This will be one of the most rewarding activities you will ever experience.

We encourage every man in Ararat to become a driver. It will require you to go to your State Driver’s License Office and obtain a copy of your driving record. As a matter of fact, all drivers need to bring their records up to date in this manner.

A big Thank You to the following Nobles who have driven the Hospital Van in the month of July!

Why We DriveBY WILLIAM R. WARREN

The reason a person will drive in the Hospital Transportation Group when he could just as eas-ily stay home are many. Some volunteer to stay busy, others work out of a need for community involvement and others still drive to repay a kindness that was shown to them or their family. Each man has sworn an oath to serve the needs of children. If the oath is not a literal thing it is certainly a resolution of the heart. (As Masons we are under just such a charge). The vital component of this equation is the fact that these men will drive. They have placed themselves among the elite in our fraternity with their dedication to children and the ongoing public personification of what a Shriner is. These men are working without recognition or recompense to serve those who cannot assist themselves.

The routine of the Hospital Transportation Group is fairly straight forward. An application for aid is received into the Transportation Office and evaluated. Once all pertinent paperwork is in place the documents are forwarded to the nearest Shrine Hospital that can do the work this ap-plicant requires. Currently Ararat Shrine is sending children to St. Louis, Chicago, Cincinnati and Philadelphia. Once the hospital has evaluated the medical condition and decided if the patient can

be helped an appointment is made. The Shrine Transportation Office will determine if the patient will be driven to the hospital, fly to the hospital or receive care via the Telemedicine Program here at the Temple. If a vehicle transport is required, two drivers are selected who will provide patient transportation in the Shrine’s transportation van.

The trip begins about six hours before the appointment (if the appointment is at 8:00 am you do the math when this process starts!). About five hours prior to the appointment the safety checklists are complete and the van departs the Temple to pick up the patient(s). Scattered along Interstate 70 are predetermined locations where patients can be picked up. This makes travel easier on the patient and more efficient for the Shrine. Once the patient and their accompanying adult are collected, the trip begins in earnest. Heading east along I-70 the drivers work to insure a smooth, safe and comfortable trip for the patient, working to avoid the many challenges that vehicular traffic can offer. Around halfway through the journey the van stops at Kingdom City to refuel and allow the group to stretch their legs. This is where the drivers swap positions and head out to complete the first segment of the trip. The routine distance from the Temple to the Shrine Hospital in St. Louis is about 233 miles. Road construction and traffic delays can alter the trip a small amount but in gen-eral, a little less than 500 miles for a round trip is normal.

The van arrives at the Shrine Hospital about 45 minutes prior to the appointment. This al-lows time to insure the patient can make their appointment with a small cushion for unexpected obstacles that often pop up! Once at the hospital the patient is whisked away to attend to the medi-cal portion of the visit. The drivers get some time to relax, chat with other drivers from all over the country and to visit with staff and patients who are currently being treated. While most drivers have little more than rudimentary first aid training, here is yet another place they shine. Talking to the kids is more joy than job and as a driver this author can report the experience more uplifting than anything one normally encounters. Here is the true picture of courage. The kids are generally upbeat. Displaying a positive attitude and a ready laugh the children rarely if ever complain about the challenges they are facing. If the roles were reversed, I would be far less optimistic!

While there is no set time for an appointment to conclude, the patient is ready to return home as quickly as possible. The drivers once again change places and begin the return trip from St. Louis to Kansas City. Traffic on the south side of St. Louis is rarely light; rush hour can be an event to remember. If unfortunate enough to be caught in rush hour traffic an extra 40 to 60 minutes can be added to the return trip. Now that the patient has been attended to the co-pilot is available to provide assistance if needed. Assistance is rarely needed since the parent or guardian is there but it is available should the need arise.

The return trip is the same as the outbound with the stop in Kingdom City as before. The pa-tient is returned to the pick-up point and the van is returned to the Temple and prepared for its next trip. All this work is done in a professional and routine basis with great men doing unheralded work.

Are you a great man with a desire to be among the elite? Do you have the determina-tion, drive and fortitude to make a difference to others? If you are up to the challenge, you may be able to become one of us. If you would like more information, contact our Chairman and Brother, Ed Stowell at 816-923-1319. Ed keeps office hours from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm about every business day. He would be honored to talk to you. By the way, did you know the Hospital Transportation Group at Ararat Shrine is not a unit but a club? The reason is simple; Shriners can only join one unit but can join multiple clubs. The Transportation Group needs access to the manpower and skills of all the members of the Shrine so we can perform the critical task we are obligated by our oaths to perform.

Hospital System HeroesFor the month of July the following Nobles have sponsored children into the Shrine

Hospitals. If your name has never appeared in this column, consider getting involved. It will not only change your life, but will be a life changing experience for a child and his family.

Larry Cooper Kenneth Nadler Steve Dowdy Bill Warren

We finally had great weather for ourmeeting in April: no rain, no snow, no 20degrees and windy! Not that the weatherhad ever discouraged our members. Wehad the same great turnout, be the weath-er good or not so good!

Dignitaries attending this month wereLiaison Officer Dave Bushakra and LadyMolly, and Ambassador Curt Karnes andLady Sue. These two couples truly repre-sent good works and good fellowship forthe Shrine and we look forward eachmonth to seeing them.

We were happy to welcome back Daveand Nora Hutchison. They brought backa “truckload” of fish and invited us to theirhomefor the June meeting and a fish fry!

Dave, incidentally, won the 50/50 draw-ing, but that was in no way connected tothe invitation. We would never use anysort of bribery to get Dave and Nora to fixfish for us!

Our guest speaker was Sally Nance,Administrator for the Excelsior SpringsHospital. She gave us a brief history onthe hospital and all the improvementsthey have made, and the new independentliving center completed recently.

Our May meeting will be held again atCatricks Café in Lawson. Tell yourMasonic friends what fun and fellowshipwe have, and bring someone with you tothe next meeting.

The Recorder’s Corner BY DAN SMOTHERS

LEADING IN TIMES OF CHANGE

The reality of ongoing change is not news for most leaders in Ararat Shrine. Ararat has been in a constant state of change for most of its history. Some of the changes in the past were struggles internally

for Ararat and others were external that we had no control over (war, the great depression, recessions, politics, etc). Internal challenges that we had were changes in meet-ing locations, the rise and fall of membership numbers, to the most current issues facing us in the fall of the capitalization and financial structure of Ararat’s money. This most current challenge is one that we have probably faced before but under different circumstances with a smaller building and less bills to pay.

Today, we have one of the most fantastic Shrine centers in all of the realm, but we must con-tinue to be optimistic about our future and make tough decisions that are difficult with little hesita-tion or second guessing. We have to be realistic and open and cannot be shy about the difficulties we are facing. We must speak candidly about the true situation. We must show a sense of urgency and show a willingness to learn and try new things-even when the process is difficult or painful.

The Divan of today is trying to meet some of these needs of the current situation we are fac-ing. If you have an idea or something that you think could be beneficial, please do not hesitate to talk to a Divan member and let them know your ideas.

ORIENTAL BANDBy Dave Wilbanks, Scribe

Well, here we are in the month of May, which meansthe parade season has started. Hope that everyone hada good time at Missouri City and Richmond.

Let’s go back a couple of months for a minute. InMarch, Noble Art Kinder brought his grandson to O.B.rehearsal. We all got to meet him and made him welcome. He really seemed to enjoy watching his granddad play, however I think that might have made Art a little nervous.Art had said before we got started that his grandsonwas here visiting from Canada. It seemed to me that wemight have a future Master Mason in the works.

On a sad note, that month we also lost our last char-ter member of the O.B., Noble Loren Lundy. Hepassed away at the young age of 100, a milestonewhich he turned last August. All our prayers and goodwishes go out to the rest of his family. He was oneNoble that stood out above the rest in every way possible. He is truly missed.

Next we have a little bit about the O.B. SpringDance. It may not have been the best turnout we haveever had, but President Waco still did an outstandingjob. He made sure that those who did make it reallyhad a good time; so, “Hats off and job well done,” toour President. And let’s not forget our ladies for having the Silent Action in the back of Bennett; “A

GREATBIG THANK YOU,” from President Wacoand the rest of us as well.

Now how about the month of April? Hmmmm, let’ssee! It was reported that our President Waco, who alsoplays the bass drum, is very versatile. He can scratchhis back with one hand and continue to play well withthe other. Who knew?

On another note, the O.B. would like to welcomeback Noble Don Lanning. He took a trip to Englandfor a little while but had to come back because he didnot have a visa to be able to stay longer. He said that hewas having a great time over there with his wife, andgot to go and see his son as well. So all in all the tripmay have been short but the time was well spent.

Just to touch a little bit on the Swap Meet, the O.B.had a pretty good turnout to help in all areas from thepop wagon to picking up trash. President Waco wouldjust like to say, “THANKS GUYS.” He couldn't havedone it without us. Saturday was the best day. It wascrowded but we all managed to make it through.Sunday was not as busy, but still a pretty good turnout. So from the nobles of the Oriental Band to all of thenobles that were able to make it, GREATJOB! Hopeto see you in the fall for the next one.

Til then, be safe.

What a fabulous time of year. CSSA is over and all the competing Units and Clubs are back home with their

accomplishments. School is back in session and lives are becoming more organized. Last minute details are being made for the Fall Cer-emonial. And it’s a perfect time for the membership to unite and make a strong surge to finish this year out with a commit-ment to making Ararat a better place than when we started the year.

The fall really is a great time to be a Shriner. We have the American Royal, Hallow-een and Christmas parties in which to look forward. We will be working the Fall Swap Meet, the 77th Ararat Circus and find-ing many opportunities to per-sonally make a difference. Be an active part of something. You certainly don’t have to try to do everything, but pick something and put your stamp on it!

Don’t forget that Ararat will once again host another Masonic Unity Evening, October 17th. We already have a commitment from the Deputy Grand Master David Ramsey, who should be Grand Master in October, to attend. We hope to include the York Rite and

Scottish Rite for presentations as well. We’ll again serve food and encourage all Masons, their ladies and friends to attend. This is an opportunity for us to inform the public what

we do and share in our fun. It certainly wouldn’t be a com-plete evening if we didn’t have our very own Arch Production! If you missed the last one, then you will not want to miss this one. Let’s make it an awesome evening.

Remember the Fall Cer-emonial is October 26th and 27th. ALL petitions will be voted on at the Temple meet-ing on the 10th. There will be no petitions accepted after this date for the Fall Ceremonial. The total cost to join is only $150.00, just like it was at the Spring Ceremonial. Let’s get

those petitions in and EVERYONE plan on at-tending the Fall Ceremonial.

& Food Wine BY STEVE DOWDY

It seems that those of us who enjoy an oc-casional, or perhaps more frequent, glass of wine are living in good times. Particularly

those who live in Missouri. That’s not intended to say that we are more fortunate than Kansans, just that this article is about Missouri wine and winemaking.

Turns out that there are a lot of wineries in Missouri, most of which I didn’t know existed until just recently, While it is true that most, 81%, of Missouri’s wines are produced at only five wineries, we have a lot of small producers all across the state. The big guys are Les Bour-geois at Rocheport, Stone Hill at Hermann, Branson, and New Florence, St. James at St James, Crown Valley at Ste. Genevieve, and Augusta at Augusta. All five, along with five smaller wineries, participate in research with the University of Missouri.

Nine of ten wineries in the research pro-gram are stretched across the state, more or less following the Missouri. The tenth participant is

at Purdy, way down in the southwest corner of the state.

About 14,000 people are employed in Mis-souri’s wine industry. Roughly 1,700 acres of Missouri land are devoted to growing grapes.

The Norton is the state grape of Missouri, and, in 1873, it was declared Best Red of All Nations at the International Wine Competi-tion in Vienna. Norton wine was a favorite of President Ulysses S. Grant. Norton wine also contains up to twice as much the beneficial of chemical reservatrol as other varieties.

Wine tours are also a burgeoning business in the state. Most organized wine tours cover the eastern half of the state, but virtually all win-eries will give tours, and all will be happy to see you. There is a brand new tour just getting start-ed north of Kansas City. Eight wineries are in-volved, and the best way to keep up with events is to visit their web page, www NWMissouri-Wine.com. And, a Missouri tour is not nearly as expensive as a Sonoma Valley Tour.

I uncovered the following in a forgotten file some time ago. I have no clue as to its background. I only know that it caused me to sit up and think. I hope it does the same for you.

A little boy decided that he wanted to find God. A wise decision on his part. Not knowing how far he had to go, he decided to pack a lunch. Four packs of Twinkies and two cans of root beer. He set out on his journey and went a few blocks before coming to a park. On one of the park benches sat an old woman looking at the pigeons.

The boy sat down beside her and watched the pigeons with her. When he grew hungry, he pulled out some Twinkies. As he ate, he noticed the woman watching him, so he offered her a Twinkie. She accepted it gratefully and smiled at him.

He thought she had the most beautiful smile in the world. Wanting to see it again, he opened a can of root beer and offered her the second one. Once again she smiled that beautiful smile. For a long time the two sat on that park bench eating Twinkies, drinking root beer, smiling at each other, and watching the pigeons. Neither said a word.

Finally, the little boy realized that it was getting late and he needed to go home. He started to leave, took a few steps, turned back and gave the woman a big hug. Her smile was brighter than ever before.

When he arrived home, his mother noticed that he was happy, but strangely quiet. “What did you do today?” she asked. “I had lunch in the park with God,” he said. Before his mother could reply, he added, “You know, she has the most beautiful smile in the world.”

Meanwhile, the woman left the park and returned home. Her son noticed something differ-ent about her. “What did you do today, Mom?” he asked. “Oh, I ate Twinkies and drank root beer in the park with God.” Before her son could say anything, she added, “You know, God is a lot younger than I had imagined.”

God in us! Does anyone ever notice? Think about it!

Jackson County Shrine Club BBQ ContestBY THE NEWS HOUND

The 5th Annual Jackson County Shrine Club BBQ Contest was held on August 10 and 11.

27 Teams battled it out with their blazin bbq’s, smokers, and other wood or charcoal fired devices.

Chairman Steve Holbrook did an out-standing job (once again) of coordinating and ensuring the BBQ contest was a success! Don’t Know Jac provided the crowd with some live music on Friday night.

After an arduous night of smokin n gril-lin (and maybe a bit of partaking of some li-bations), the competitors turned in their ribs, chicken, pork, brisket, and sausage for judging.

After the BBQ battle points were tallied, J & M took home the Grand Champion Trophy and Big Billy took home the Reserve Grand Champion Trophy! Congrats to both teams!

Mike Keller, of Keller Metal Works, once again made the Reserve Grand Champion and Grand Champion trophies. The trophies were spectacular to say the least!

If you missed out on the BBQ contest or have never attended, make sure you are there next year!

Jackson County Shrine Club

Hello again from Jackson County, the little club that could. Well, our first topic is to brag about what a success our BBQ was. From what I hear, it was another record year. Hats off to all who participated, and especially Noble Steve Holbrook and his BBQ committee.

In the Building and Grounds Department we are happy to report that the kitchen project is complete. On a surprise note, the game room has new carpet, and has been renovated. Hats off to Noble Bill Boynton and his crew!!

Now to fun!! Our Family Fun Night Picnic was a great time, and a real success. Although the weather was in the 90’s, the kids stayed cool with a pool and a large arsenal of super soak-ers. Hats off to Nobles Will Rust, Mark Dobson, and their crew for making these events such a success. The next Family Fun Night will be in September with details to follow. Our next Family Fun activity is an outing to a Royals game on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1 pm with our own family style of tailgating to be held before. You do not have to be a JCSC member to attend, and the tickets are at a discount rate. For more info contact Noble Matt Terryberry at 816-286-6358.

Of course you can’t talk about JCSC fun without mentioning the Fun-Cor. As I write this, we are prepping our bikes for Parkville and Lexington. We hope to see you there!!

I’ll sign off for now, from JCSC, “where the dues are cheap, and the fun is priceless!!”

Our August meeting was held at the Temple on Monday, August 6th with all officers and several members present. We were again honored to have our Liaison Officer, First Cer-emonial Master Noble Nick Baldi with us. Our Director Noble Mick Owens presented each

member who will be attending CSSA in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with a detailed packet outlining our daily schedule and route we will travel, which was well prepared. We thank both he and Lady Jan for traveling to Cedar Rapids two weeks prior to our departure date for the purpose of preparing our trip. We had eleven members and ladies attending this year. Our vehicles were judged in com-petition on Friday, August 10th and we placed first in the Antique Car Class and 3rd in Modified Car Class. Our entire trip was enjoyed by all and all of our vehicles made the trip without mechani-cal problems.

Our Past Director and Past Potentate Illus. Sir Don Price reported that the stones used in the Arch Program will now be stored in a place behind the stage area of Bennett Auditorium, which will eliminate the wear and tear of transporting them from the warehouse behind the Temple. He further announced that he will enter the Veterans Hospital on Monday, August 13th for a heart check up and will be traveling to Washington, D.C. with other World War II veterans to visit the new Vet-erans Memorial at a future date.

New blue shirts were presented to all members by our President Noble Mike Aulgur. Noble Butch Johnson, Chairman of the Swap Meets, asked for our help during the upcoming Swap Meet in September which will be held at the same place in Lee’s Summit.

Our get well report includes

Lady Eunice Doubledee, who was admitted to Centerpoint Hospital in early August with a serious heart problem. She is now home recovering. Also our member Noble Benny Hoke was hospital-ized with a serious heart condition in August and is doing well. We wish them both a healthy recovery and please remember them in your prayers.

Pictured below include some CSSA photos from Cedar Rapids, Iowa taken by our Past Direc-tor Noble Gary Seger.

Thoughts on the Passing of a FriendBY STEVE DOWDY

I’ve lost another friend. WE’ve lost another friend. Noble Dave Gordon, Past Potentate, rode away on the Black Camel. My heart hurts. He always had a positive attitude, even when things weren’t going so well in his battle. The last time I saw him, he was smiling.

Noble Dave Gordon served as Potentate of Ararat Shrine in 2008, not very long ago. He was a good Potentate, working hard and having fun. He learned the Potentates craft by serving as Membership Chairman and President of the Greeters. He carried the big smile and ready handshake of the Greeters with him wherever he traveled. He also belonged to, and participated in, the Order of Quetzalcoatl and the Royal order of Jesters. He was committed to Shrinedom in all of its parts.

He was a husband to Sandy, a father to Skip, Mark, and Paula, a grandfather to Kylie and Stephen, a brother to two sisters, a Mason, a Shriner, your friend and mine.

When someone takes that final ride, it makes no difference whether it’s a Noble or a Lady. It hurts. Sometimes I think I miss the Ladies more because I still see the Noble, and feel his loss.

This time, the visitation was at Ararat, and, for me, that was good. It’s easier when my friends are around, knowing how I feel and feeling much the same. We can stand around and tell stories and swap memories, and for a while we can see him smiling again A bunch of Nobles were there with me. Even some Divan members from Abdallah were there. Several of our friends from Scouting were there. It’s easier when my friends are there, and a lot of them were that night.

Dave suffered from cancer, and that’s an unforgiving thing. I guess that’s when the Black Camel stuck his nose in the tent. Noble Dave punched that nose, and we all rejoiced. But, black camels are persistent. Most likely, we’ll all get to see Dave again someday. Until then, we’ll remember him from time to time, and we’ll think about his life. We might even think about those he left behind and maybe share a kind word with them. Just like Dave, we’ll fight to stay here, but when God calls, we will answer the call. We can’t say “Wait a minute. I don’t have time for this. I’ve got parades, a ceremonial….I’m just too busy right now.” And, the rest of us will wave goodbye.

Dave was a good man. He helped the kids. He helped wherever and whenever he could. He mostly told the truth. He believed in God. He was my friend.

We shall all miss him for a long, long, time.

Divan Meeting NotesBY STEVE DOWDY

The August, 2012, Divan Meeting was held on Monday, August 13, 2012, in the Divan Office at Ararat Shrine. It was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by Illustrious Sir Richard Floyd.

Chaplain Loyd Gentry, called for a moment of silence to remember Illustrious Sir Dave Gordon, P.P., and then gave the invocation.

Illustrious Sir Richard Floyd reported that he had a good time at CSSA in Cedar Rapids. He also gave a short report on the various competition results.

Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer said that the 2012 Circus is still looking good. About $75,000 has been collected so far. He also advised everyone to get their contributions in early so that we can buy advertising before the politicians buy up all the space.

Assistant Rabban Maurice Camerlynck asked several hard questions about Temple finances.High Priest & Prophet Kirby had nothing to report. Oriental Guide Steve Johnson reported on efforts to obtain an ATM for the Temple, saying

that we could buy an ATM, at a reasonable cost. We can then charge a fee for each transaction, as many ATM’s now charge. There is no way of reliably predicting the level of use such a machine would see, so, the amount of fees per month cannot be predicted. The Divan decided to investigate more options.

First Ceremonial Master Nick Baldi spoke up, saying that he was confused about the alloca-tion of funds raised at the Swap Meet. Assistant Rabban Maurice answered that any money raised today, would be spent today. Noble Maurice stated that the figures quoted in Temple meetings represent only the last 30 days.

Treasurer Mike Allen reported a request for permission to establish an independent fund for

the money contributed by the Bingo players. The players expect their contributions to go to the “Children,” and they are usually presented to the Hospital Transportation Fund. An independent fund could be used to accumulate contributions, which could then be donated for a particular need. It was decided that such a fund would probably be against Imperial Council regulations, at best. The request was denied.

A motion was made and seconded to raise the cost of the meal served at Temple meetings to $10.00 to more accurately reflect the true cost of providing that meal. The motion passed.

Treasurer Allen discussed the 2011 Audit of restaurant finances, which of course does not reflect the changes of the past few months.

Recorder Dan Smothers said that he had only two requests for Remission of Dues. He recom-mended approval of one, but said that the second needed more study. Two clubs had submitted proposed changes to their Bylaws. One of the proposals was accepted, and one needed some clarification.

First Ceremonial Master Nick Baldi spoke of an upcoming Masonic Unity Night, scheduled for October 17. He proposed to charge current Nobles a reasonable fee for lunch at the upcoming Ceremonial, while serving the Candidates at no cost to them. Clubs and units will be asked for contributions to help defray the cost of the Ceremonial. New Nobles will be given shirts, just as the Spring Class Nobles were given shirts.

Noble Nick also said that number of Bingo workers needs to grow. We all need to support Noble Buck with workers to help make the night go smoother. Perhaps some incentive for work-ers should be offered. We also need to find some way to market our Bingo nights. It is illegal for the recipient of Bingo profits to spend money on the games. Noble Nick will investigate options.

Outer Guard Butch Pugh said that his outlying clubs would like to see some visitors from the Temple, at least once in a while.

Chaplain Loyd gave the benediction and the meeting adjourned at 10:07 p.m.

Illustrious Sir Richard Floyd called the August, 2012, meeting to order at 7:35 PM, August 15, 2012 in the Frank S. Land Ballroom.

Assistant Rabban Maurice Camerlynck informed the Cap-tain of the Guard that the Potentate was about to open Ararat Temple for business, who, in turn, informed the Outer Guard.

Captain of the Guard Jerry Grimes reported that our Temple was under a double and trusty guard.

Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer looked around and informed the Potentate that our Temple was free from jeopardy as there were none present save members of our order. The Potentate replied that “It is well.”

Oriental Guide Steve Johnson prepared the Altar. Chaplain Loyd Gentry remembered our Nobles who had

been visited by the Black Camel and gave the invocation. He asked for a moment of silence in memory of Past Potentate Dave Gordon.

The Legion of Honor presented the colors. The assembled Nobles, led by the Chief Rabban, recited the

Shrine Pledge of Allegiance. There was no National Anthem.Recorder Dan Smothers did not read the Minutes of the July

meeting, due to a previous motion waiving the reading of min-utes for the entire term of Illustrious Sir Richard. He read one Petition for Creation, and none for Association or Affiliation.

Treasurer Mike Allen gave the Treasurer’s Report, which showed that we are still solvent, but certainly not well financed. For the month ending July 31, Temple expenses exceeded in-come, and restaurant expenses also exceeded income. The Peti-tion for Creation was accepted by vote of the Nobility.

There were no demits and one request for remission of dues. The Liberty Shrine Club made a donation to the Corner-

stone Fund in memory of Noble Jim Runyan. The Jackson County Shrine Club purchased two bricks; one

in the name of Jackson County Shrine Club and one in honor of Ed Lawson.

Four visitors from Abdallah Shrine were registered.Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer reported that collections for

the Circus are going great, and presented Circus Jackets to four Nobles. A total of eighteen Nobles have earned jackets this year. “Keep it up!”

Assistant Rabban Maurice Camerlynck reminded us that the Fall Car Swap Meet will be held September 14, 15, and 16 at the same place in Lee’s Summit. For this meet, the North Park-ing Lot will be reserved for Shriners.

First Ceremonial Master Nick Baldi told us that our next Ceremonial will be October 27, with the Pub Crawl on October 26. Cost for Candidates will be $150.00, plus the cost of a new fez.

The Potentate’s Golf Outing, which is just around the cor-ner on September 10. The event will be dedicated to the memory of Noble Jim Runyan and will be held at the Fred Arbanas Golf Course in Lee’s Summit. Remember, Ladies are welcome, and the public is welcome.

Illustrious Sir Richard said that he had a good time at CSSA. Several Nobles presented trophies to the Potentate.

Bingo Chairman Buck Johnson told us that Bingo is doing pretty well, and attendance is improving. The usual contribution of Bingo receipts was made to the General Fund. The players

also donated $815.00 to the Hospital Transportation Fund.Hospital Chairman Ed Stowell told us that 84 patients have

been transported by air this year, at a total cost of $11,000 to the Hospital Transportation Fund, and $14,000 worth of “Green Passes” from Southwest Airlines. Cab fares and motel bills have come to about $13,000. Surface transportation for 90 patients has amounted to about 20,000 miles. Approximately 60% of our yearly transportation budget has now been expended.

Membership Chairman Rod McGrath took the stage, and reminded everyone that we will have another Masonic Unity Night on Wednesday, October 17.

Parade Chairman Don Pittier reminded us of upcoming pa-rades.

Recorder Dan Smothers read a resolution from Imperial about the “Shrine Super Savers” program, asking for our par-ticipation. Participation would require us to submit the names and addresses for the entire membership to the Super Savers pro-gram. Information on special “deals” would then be sent to the Nobles. Approval of the Nobility was required, but the request was rejected by voice vote.

Under Good of the Order, the Guides presented plans for a Murder Mystery Party on October 12. It will begin with a 4-course dinner, to be followed with a comedy murder mystery play by professional actors, and all kinds of stuff. Only 150 tick-ets will be available at $60.00 each.

Visitors from Abdallah Shrine remembered Past Potentate Dave Gordon.

Chaplain Loyd gave the benediction and the meeting was adjourned at 8:55 pm.

Nobody Told Me!BY STEVE DOWDY

I think I’m on the road to recovery! CSSA ended almost two weeks ago, I’ve had a few nights free of Shrine events, and I got a good night’s sleep last night. Life is good.

We, Jerri and I anyway, had a great time in Cedar Rapids. El Kahir had never hosted a CSSA ceremonial before, and they tried hard. They hosted a Hog Roast on Thursday night, the OB group found a great restaurant (thanks, Lisa), the OB awards banquet was at El Kahir, and it was good, too. It’s hard to beat three good din-ners in a row!

It’s too bad that we didn’t have a bigger contingent from Ararat. I really think every one of us had fun, and El Kahir went all out to make us happy. The parade was held on the campus of a small col-lege, Kirkwood Community College, and it worked very well. The route was largely flat, and they had a good dog roast after we finished.

Ararat took its share of trophies, too. I’m a little bit hazy as to who won what, except that the Provost Shooting team brought home sixteen trophies. Pretty good for one club! My congratula-tions to them! And to all the other winners.

Now, it’s time to get down to the business of Ararat Shrine. We’ve got some important events coming up; starting with the

Potentate’s Golf Tournament that may be in the past by the time you read this. It is, or was, on September 10. Then, at the other end of the week is the Fall Swap Meet, on September 14, 15, and 16, followed by Ararat Family picnic on September 23, and at the end of the month, comes the Provost Fish Fry on September 28. There’s this thing called a “Mixed Martial Arts event on September 22. Next month, there’s this thing called the “Fall Ceremonial,” im-mediately preceded by the famous “Pub Crawl,” October 26 and 27. The Guides are hosting a Murder Mystery Night on October 12 and there’s a Tex-Mex Hoe-Down on October 6. Our next Mason-ic Unity Night is October 17. Almost forgot the Temple Meetings on September 12 and October 10.

I’ve never watched an MMA event, but they certainly do draw

a crowd. We met one of the fighters, or should that be “a perform-er,” about two years ago, and he seemed like a pleasant chap. He told us that he never got hurt while he was fighting. Maybe I’ll have to see one someday soon.

Is that enough to keep you busy? Just a few months ago some-body told me that “There’s nothing to do at the Shrine anymore.” Hmmm!

If you’ve been living under a rock for the last couple of months, you may not know that we lost a bunch of good men lately. The names are read each month at the Temple Meeting, and there’s always a few that I don’t know. And more than occasionally there’s several that I do know. It’s a time for sadness.

Please don’t forget that we have a national election in about two months. Don’t know how you could avoid knowing about that. Go ahead and vote, even though at least 4 out of 10 friends will say you voted wrong. You should vote in the Temple election, too. Nobody will say you voted wrong in that one.

It’s about time to pay your dues, too. Please pay promptly, and cheerfully. Remember your Blue Lodge dues, too.

Hello Nobles and Ladies. If you are a Northlander we need YOU. We are a great bunch of guys with a WONDER-

FUL wives group who meet once a month for good food and fellowship

On August 7th we had our regular meet-ing at the VFW in Claycomo (right there beside Stroud’s). We started the evening at 5:30 PM with a social hour and then at 6:30 PM had an excellent Meat Loaf dinner with mashed pota-toes and gravy and corn, plus several salads and dessert. Wow, what a feast! Next month please come on out, enjoy a meal with us and have some great fellowship.

Prior to dinner Noble Vice President Bert Torrey led us in prayer and then Noble Dave McLaughlin led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Then our wonderful wives group led by Bev Cunliffe-Owen held their drawing for a gift cer-tificate to the Cracker Barrel Restaurant. The drawing was won by our Ambassador Shaun Robinson who then donated it back to the club. Thank you for your generosity, Sir. Thanks La-dies for all your efforts.

President White opened the meeting at 7:15 PM. We had a very short business meet-ing. Seems that Dick and Dave (our Secretary & Treasurer) had slipped off to Vegas. Fortu-nately Bert had snagged the checkbook before they left. LOL. Hope you had a good trip guys. We are thinking about doing something special in October as that will be the 38th Anniversary of the Club. If you are or have been a member of the Club you should receive a letter from VP Bert Torrey here in the near future to see if you are interested.

Our Ambassador Shaun Robinson then filled us in on upcoming events at the Temple including the fact there is always a need for help on Thursday nights at Bingo and the Pro-vost really need help. Please see Neil Cowan if you can be of assistance to them. He reminded us to please try and support each other’s func-tions. If you can attend another unit or club’s dinner or dance please do so. We have to take care of each other. He then informed us that the Restaurant seems to be turning around and making a profit. That is excellent news. If you are down that way be sure to stop in and try it out. Also, Shaun still has plenty of Circus Mom & Dad pins. If you don’t have yours yet or just want another set (you do get Crown Jewel points for the purchase) please give him a call.

If any new noble wants to come visit us we welcome you and your Lady. We will even buy your dinner the first time and pay your first year’s dues for the club. So stop by and visit with us.

We truly miss not seeing many of our old friends from the club. If you haven’t been to a meeting in a while come on back and see us. We miss your company and need you to keep our club active and functional.

Noble President White also asks if you can please make it to the Temple Meetings and wear your Northland Shirt or Fez.

Again, if you want some good food and want to meet some good people come on by our next meeting, Tuesday September 4th at the VFW in Claycomo. Come join us for dinner before the meeting and visit with old and new friends. Hope to see you there!!!

NOBODY TOLD ME!By, Steve Dowdy

I went to the Potentate’s Ball last month, but it was too late for me to write about it.It wasn’t too late to get the pictures in thepaper, but I couldn’t write fast enough.

We’ve always liked the Potentate’s Ball, probably because Jerri likes to get dressedup, and when she’s happy, it’s easy for meto get happy. Besides that, wearing a tuxe-do makes me feel like James Bond! Ofcourse, it’s not the getting beat up twice inevery movie that I like to imagine, butthere’s enough other cool stuff to keep myinner Walter Mitty quite happy.

This time, the ball was a masqueradeparty. We only wore masks on our faces, unless you count the James Bond outfit. Ithought that would be the silliest thing Iever did, but I was wrong. I was reallywrong! I was great! Shriner’s wives arebeautiful anyway, but the air of mystery

added something special. Then, the Nobleslooked like some kind of royalty in theirmasks. I didn’ t have much trouble identi-fying anybody, but it was fun to pretend.

The decorations were certainly impressive, and the food was outstanding. I’m sure thatsomebody got something he didn’t like, butthat’s the way the world works. It’s reallydifficult to prepare good food for that manypeople, and it’s even more difficult trying toserve that many people, keeping the foodwarm and not dropping a plate in anyone’s lap.

Then came the band. Asmall band fromJoplin, of all places. As far as I know,Joplin has never been the music capital ofthe free world, but with this band, they’vegot a pretty good chance. The band wascalled “Diversity,” and it was appropriate. They played stuff that the old guys like meenjoyed, and they played stuff that the several

young people in the attendance really liked. There were several “kids” at the ball,

some of them were family of the Divan, some were young Nobles and Ladies, andsome were sons and daughters of Nobles.Whoever they were, they danced andlaughed and behaved politely while havinga lot of fun. Some of them even dancedwith Nobles old enough to be their fathers, and at least one young lady talked one ofour dance divas into giving her dance les-sons. Lady Eva Horrell seemed to be hav-ing as much fun as her student. It was greatseeing such a diverse group dancing to aband called Diversity. Can’t you just pic-ture them telling their friends that those oldpeople really know how to have fun!

It taught me that we can attract youngmen to the Nobility, and we can enjoy beingaround each other. That means a lot to our

fraternity. Too many young men look at usand think that they have nothing in com-mon with us. My own son, a Noble him -self, doesn’t like to come to our parties anddances because he doesn’t like “our music.”We need to find common ground, and itwas there at the Potentate’s Ball.

I think a lot of the credit must go to theFirst Lady, because I just don’t seeIllustrious Sir Kevin putting all of thattogether by himself. But, with LadyDianna’s help, and guidance, he threw ahelluva party! They’re quite a pair!

If we, the Nobility of Ararat Shrine, cancontinue in that tradition, we are going tohave a fantastic year. We CAN have fun whilehelping our kids, and it’s time we did so.

Sandbuggie Unit BY MARTIN CARIGNAN, SCRIBE

Cedar Rapids Iowa, Central States, was well attended by the Ararat Sandbuggies. Eight out of a Unit strength of 10 mem-

bers were in attendance and two of our mem-bers took their campers.

John and Sherrill Nelson made sure that all the Ararat Nobles had a well-stocked Tem-ple Hospitality Room with lots of tid-bits and plenty of fluids.

Several evenings we experienced a drenching from the heavens above which was much needed in that farming area.

The Clarion Hotel provided good service and the food was more than adequate and very tasty.

The parade at Kirk-wood Community Col-lege was well organized.

However the width of the streets were not ac-commodating to the large turning radius of the Buggies but all went well.

The Buggie Family wants to congratulate all of you Nobles that participated in competi-tion bringing trophies back to Ararat.

We have a Buggy available for a Noble who wants to ride in the parades and share in the good times with the Unit. For all interested our Membership Chairman Ernie Wills, (660) 584-5406, or Martin Carignan (913) 677-2816, would love to talk with you.

Blue Springs Shrine ClubBY FRED “FINGERS” HARLE P.P.

Can you believe we received some rain last night! That was Wednesday, Aug. 8th and we had not had any for so long I went outside and just stood in the rain. It really felt so good, just like

when we were kids, except we didn’t get that much. Not enough to turn the grass green. Maybe by October things will change and we will get some cooler weather and get down to some good Shrine business with our Blue Springs Shrine Club.

First off, our club attended the T-Bones ball game on Aug. 18. We all met at Side Pockets here in Blue Springs where we boarded a chart-ed bus and all rode together to the game. It was almost as much fun as the ball game itself because when you get that many Shriners together it’s bound to be hilarious, to say the least. What a blast! We’ll be talking about this one for some time to come.

On September 30 we will once again meet at our favorite meeting place, Side Pockets, board a charted bus and head for Weston, MO. This is the home of the famous place where they produce that beverage that will cause hangovers the next morning, should you imbibe too much the day before. I’ll let you guess what it is I’m talking about. This one should be a barn-burner. On the way back home all you will be able to hear will be giggles and loud whoopees. Oh well, that’s why we went in the first place, wasn’t it?

Why don’t you come join us? You don’t know how much fun a Shriner can have until you belong to the Blue Springs Shrine Club.

Our club will again sponsor another Texas Hold’em Fundraiser at Side Pockets on October 21, with a bake sale by our Ladies. This is a very popular part of our fundraiser; you’ve got to see it to believe it.

Our good and loyal member Noble Louie Sohn has undergone some surgery. Word has it that he is doing a lot better. I’m sure that Lady Connie is watching him very close. So, come on Louie, we want you back with us as soon as you can!!!!

Happy Birthdays to the following: Noble Milo Barnhard, Jr., Aug. 12; Lady Lucy Daily, Aug. 13; Noble Dick Daily, Aug. 15; Lady Wanda Quibell, Aug. 23; and Lady Melissa Egy, Aug. 25.

Our next official meeting of our Blue Springs Shrine Club will be September 24, and I’ll just bet that this copy of our temple news will be out in time to tell everybody about it, so you have no excuse not to show for the fun and games. If you don’t know how to get there or where we meet, call me at 816-228-2210 and I’ll give you directions. Now, you have no excuse!!!

I’ve included a couple of photos of some members of our club. That’s all for this time. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t enjoy my-

self!!!

Provost NewsBY BILL HUFFMAN, SCRIBE

Noble David Bennefeld was born on December 14, 1964 in Kansas City, Missouri. His interest in cars began long before graduating from Raytown High

School. Dave worked at Clays’ Corvettes while attending high school and began his love of restoring them, learning the paint and body business. For those who are familiar with Vettes, working with repairing or restoring them is much different than conventional cars. Noble Bennefeld enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and after his tour ended, Dave worked for the Kansas City Star in the printing depart-ment. As most people do, Noble Bennefeld returned to what he enjoyed most, and began making damaged cars look new again, this time at Mc Donald’s Body Shop. No-ble David Bennefeld is still, as the owner of Beacon Towing, involved with cars. Not just the towing end of it, but on occasion the painting too.

David became a member of Blue Lodge # 219 in 2004 and is currently the Senior Deacon. In 2005 Noble Bennefeld became a Shriner. He is a dutiful member of the Provost, the Patrol, and the Corvettes.

Noble David and Lady Mary are busy with Temple events and have a great bond with one an-other. I sincerely wish them well. When asked what he enjoys most about the Blue Lodge and Ararat Shrine, Dave responded simply, “the fellowship.”

I enjoyed being a part of this story. Until next time, God Bless.

Mini Model T’sBY STEVE HARGRAVE, SCRIBE

This has been a summer to remember. This has been a record breaking year, but the parched, hot days seem to be over for a while. August turned out to be what we expect from the month. At our August meeting we remembered some of the old days, and especially some of the

good days. While we were saddened by the news that Don Fisher was going to have to drop out of being a regular member and change his status to a Veteran Member, he assured us that he would be with us when he could. We were fortunate to have a new member join the unit. Scott Willi was wel-comed into the unit as our newest member. He and his lady and his two sons came to get to know all of us and decided to join into our ranks. What was also great is his twin sons were celebrating their birthday as well and brought birthday cake to share with all of us.

So we seem to growing once again. Word is that we are going to have another noble give us an application for membership to the Mini Model T’s at this month’s regular meeting. Our meeting is on the 5th this month. We start our meeting at 7:30 at the temple. If you would like to visit with us give Director Jared Hargrave or President James Blackburn a call and come by and meet all of us. We would like to talk to you.

Don’t forget that we have a couple of events for the Temple this month. The Fall Swap Meet is the 15th and 16th. The Temple will need help setting up the Swap Meet on the 14th so let’s all come out and give them a hand. Also, the Family Picnic is on September 23rd. There is still time to collect money for the circus. This will help the Temple and the unit.

Antique Auto NewsBY GREG KRANZ, SCRIBE

Twenty members gathered at Catfish Charlie’s Restaurant in Wellington, MO for the August Social. Everyone enjoyed good food and conversation. A fellow diner shared his story. Chris Praetzel is running across America to raise awareness of organ donation. His adventure is

called the “Brotherly Love Run” in honor of his younger brother who received a kidney donation in 1996. His journey stared on the Santa Monica Pier and will end at the Atlantic Shore in his home state of New Jersey. We wish him well in his cause.

The ride home was memorable, also. A storm blew through that caused for some excitement on the highway as thousands of dried corn shucks and leaves swirled over the roads. I hear that several members are still pulling corn shucks out of their grills.

Several parades are on the agenda for the coming weeks. Time to brush off the dust, pull out the corn shucks and gas up the tanks. Cooler weather is coming. Let’s pray it brings some rain.

GreetersBY DARYL KRAUSE

“It’s Never Been Sadder To Be An Ararat Greeter”.

For the first time in over a year I have changed the start of the Greeters News Article. On July 22nd the Greeters lost a brother

when “Jim” R. Runyan lost his battle with Vi-ral Pneumonia. Jim joined the Greeters in 1990 and served as Director in 2008. But everyone knew that no matter where you went at Ararat you would see Jim and most likely he would be working for one group or another, because getting involved was not something Jim had a problem with.

On August 11th we lost another brother, Il-lustrious Sir Dave Gordon after fighting a long battle with cancer. Illustrious Sir Dave joined the Greeters in 1995, held the position of Greet-ers President in 2000 and served as Ararat’s Potentate in 2008. My special memories of Il-lustrious Sir Dave started at the fall 2008 Cer-emonial when he first placed a Fez on me and welcomed me to Ararat.

The Greeters join the rest of Ararat in sending our thoughts and prayers out to Muriel, Sandy and the families.

These two gentlemen gave the Greeters and Ararat their all and helped make the Greet-ers who and what they are today…

…Which is why once again I am proud to say…

…“It’s Never Been Greater To Be An Ararat Greeter”

Harem NewsBY JIM NORMAN, SCRIBE

Hopefully the long hot summer is coming to an end. The fall weather will be a welcome relief from the summer heat! Our Director Clayton Riley recently underwent a minor medical procedure and is doing fine. Shane McCray recently purchased a three wheeler and a trailer on his car to haul it. Shane’s daughter Roxy is studying nursing at Graceland College. She will be a junior this year. I had a unique opportunity to attend the

All Star Game with my son; a very special evening. The game was lousy but I did spot Charlie Sheen and got to shake Kelli Pickler’s hand. So all in all it was a great evening.

Now on to a little Harem history. For many years the Harem had carried the flags at parades, ceremonials, and other special events. However, on March 11, 1952, the Potentate named the Harem as the official custodians of Ararat Temple’s colors. A distinction the Harem still holds today.

Ararat Needle GuildBY JERRI DOWDY

After a summer break, Ararat Needle Guild will again meet on the 2nd Tuesday in September. We hope everyone had a good summer. We would like to see each of you at Needle Guild this year. We need all the help we can get to make as many items as possible to send to

the hospitals for the children. We sew, visit, and make new friends at each meeting. Even if you can’t sew, there are things you can do. You can cut hose for Raggedy Ann and Andy, stuff Raggedy Ann and Andy, make embroidered quilt blocks, cut out fabric to be sewn etc. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium.

We need money to buy fabric, thread, buttons, scissors, elastic, needles, patterns, new sewing machines, new sergers etc. as well as having the quilts quilted.

For more information please, get in touch with the President, Elaine Graham at 816-524-0933.
