GREAT HOCKHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL With the Spring term over, it marks the end of my second year at Great Hockham. As a 'live to work' person it feels more like my first home than second. If you were to call in, on a typical day, you would find me in my slippers, in my office with Shelley (the pet tortoise), having a conversation with some children, hearing someone read or answering one of the many emails that flood in daily. I still teach one day a week, and have been recently planning music for each class. The top class, Bluebells, has been learning the clarinet weekly and that is leading up to a cluster music event with the other local schools. Violets have been looking at music history and then moved onto notation and sounds, in preparation for learning the recorder next term. Buttercups have been finding out about percussion instruments and stringed instruments, then made some of their own. We also offer multiple peripatetic music lessons - ukulele, recorder, piano, violin and guitar to name a few. The local cluster of schools has also joined together for sporting events - The Wayland Cup has been formed out of the nine schools within our cluster. The very first event was a Year 5 and 6 football tournament. As a small school we are well practised in playing tournaments as we have them every summer, but it was great to go and play against more of our local schools. After some exciting games we made it through to the final and we were thrilled to beat our challengers 2-0 to become the proud winners of the first Wayland Cup trophy. The mixed team played really well, but for me it was about how supportive they were, the admiration of other teams and the complete professionalism both on and off the pitch. Well done Great Hockham! No previous experience necessary, just enthusiasm and commitment to the rehearsal period (from September) and four performances, provisionally 29th, 30th and 31st January
Reflection for May 2014 When we use the word ‘healing’, it means the desire for wholeness in
many aspects of life. Physical ailments, mental illness, family fall outs, bereavement, communities and nations torn apart. The ministry of Jesus on earth encompassed all of these and even his enemies were astounded at his healing powers.
People of faith try to act as channels of healing in our world. Included in this is the ministry of prayer. Our prayers may not be answered in the way we might wish or anticipate but no prayer is ever wasted. At the very least, the act of praying may change the person praying in making them look outwards.
On Thursday May 29th at 1930 at St. James Ellingham, there will be a service to mark Ascension Day and we shall focus on offering prayers for healing in our world and there will be the opportunity for the ministry of laying on of hands with prayer. All are most welcome.

MARCH NEWS FROM ROCKLANDS COMMUNITY SHOP
Rocklands Community Shop opened its doors to the public on Wednesday the 12th March, followed by the grand opening on Friday 21st. This was attended by many of the community, the Prince’s Countryside Fund, The Plunkett Foundation, an MP and post office officials amongst many. Joan Dove opened the new café, preceded by an official opening ceremony of ribbon chopping. The children of Rocklands School celebrated the opening, by attending in small groups to partake of cake and a drink.

Our AGM on the 9th April followed the usual pattern of low attendance, so a big ‘thank you’ to all those who attended. The committee members who have been serving for the past years had all agreed beforehand to stand again to keep the club going. The Chairwoman, Joyce Briggs, offered members the opportunity to appoint a new Chairperson. That caused some hilarity. The Secretary also offered up her post but was met with blank silence. Joyce then asked for volunteers to serve on the committee. Incredibly, Ann Thorndyke and Sheila Follows offered to join the committee. They were given a hearty round of applause.
The afternoon progressed with the ever popular game of “Hoi!” with Easter Eggs as prizes. Our appointed MC was unable to attend so Terry stepped into the breach and kept the afternoon on track. He then offered an alternative prize to be won and this was won by Eileen from Watton. The raffle ladies provided a varied table of goodies and the items on the task table for the letter “L” ranged from a shoe last to a lemon but was won by a vase of very attractive and colourful leaves arranged by Ann of Attleborough.
All the theatre goers enjoyed their trip to the Ice Show at the Theatre Royal on the 19th March. Arranged by Margaret. Future trips are at the planning stage at the moment.
Our next club meeting on the 14th May will be a slide show and talk about St. James Palace and Clarence House by David Morton.
The meeting is from 2 – 4 pm. Entrance only £2.00 each, which includes tea/coffee and biscuits. Donated items to the raffle always appreciated. The task for May will be for the letter “M”
New members are always welcome. We have entertaining speakers, outings to places of interest and to the theatre, and lots of mardle!

DOG FOULING ON THE PLAYING FIELD
Dog owners are still NOT picking up their pooches pooh off the playing field. We now have youth football teams using the pitches, children as young as five. It can be serious for children if they touch the pooh and then their eyes so please, PLEASE
PICK UP YOUR DOG’S POOH AND USE THE BIN PROVIDED
We would hate to have to ban dogs from the
playing field but we will if that ensures
the safety of the children of the village

Council Tax
We will all have received our council tax bill recently and I thought it might be useful to submit a small piece on how it is calculated.The way our council tax bill is calculated depends on a number of factors. Each property is placed into one of eight valuation bands depending on its market value as at 1 April 1991The basic Council Tax makes the assumption that a property is occupied by two or more adults. If there are fewer than two adults resident then a discount may be allowed. Certain people may be 'disregarded' when counting the number of residents and, in effect, this person will be treated as though they were not resident. A reduction may be applied if a property is the main residence of a person with a disability and the property contains specific features which are required to meet their needs. Where a property is not used as anyone's main home and remains furnished, a locally set discount can apply. This includes properties used as second homes. In some instances Discounts are applied to properties that are empty and remain unfurnished. The level of discount is set by the Local Authority. The Breckland Council job page is where you can access current vacancies and request application packs online. The website is updated weekly, on an as-and-when required basis. The recruitment section contains a variety of information about vacancies currently available, benefits of working for Breckland and the surrounding area. The council are always interested in hearing from potential candidates and encourage applications.
Waste Contract Terminated
Norfolk County Council's Cabinet voted to terminate its waste contract with Cory Wheelabrator last month on the grounds of failure to secure satisfactory planning permission.The decision by the Council's Cabinet followed an Extraordinary Meeting of the Full Council at County Hall, Norwich, at which, after over three and a half hours of debate, Members voted 48 to 30 (1 abstention) to recommend that Cabinet should terminate the contract, which centered on the construction of an energy from waste plant close to King's Lynn in West Norfolk. Cabinet system draws to a close
Proposals which will radically overhaul the way Norfolk County Council were published in early April. A special Full Meeting of the Authority on April 28. will in all probability ratify the decision made last November when the Council resolved to move away from its current means of governance via the “Cabinet” system. Petitions
Norfolk County Council welcomes petitions. This is because they inform debate and can have positive outcomes that lead to change. For example, they can demonstrate strong public approval or disapproval to something that the council is doing.

The new Norwich Park and Ride smartcard that holds everything from a single fare to a year’s worth of travel was launched in April. “HOLDALL” is a place to keep money or credit to redeem against travel and is easy to take out. Shropham Bowls Club
At last after months of waiting the outdoor bowling season is upon us and we are hoping for a nice warm start to the season. However even before the season has started there have been changes.
The clubhouse has been creosoted a lovely chestnut brown and the wooden windows have been rubbed down and re – painted. The hedges all around have been trimmed and the green looks in wonderful condition.
We decided that the clubhouse needed a new carpet and so that has been purchased and will soon be laid. The gardens and benches have all been given a spring clean so the club and its surrounds look very good indeed. Thank you to all those members who took responsibility for those jobs.
The teams for the first month have been chosen and by the time you get the Grove we may well have played our first match. We are looking forward to what I hope will be an enjoyable and exciting season. The fixtures for May are in the Grove so please check when the home matches are on and come and support us. Sayers Bar will be open so you can have a drink while you watch.
