Annual Members Meeting Wednesday 28 September, SUFC, Bramall Lane, Time tbc

Together with governors from STH we’ve had a busy few months engaging with the community and recruiting new members. As well as facilitating members’ health events, we also attend various events around the city, offering people the opportunity to meet our governors and learn more about the Trust. We took part in the National University Mental Health and Wellbeing Day at Sheffield Hallam University where we spoke to organisations and

students about NHS services in the city and explained how getting involved can benefit them now and in the future.

HEALTH TALK ‘Talking about the Advantages of a Healthy Diet for those Living with Dementia’ was the latest in our regular health talks. More than 80 members joined us at the event held at the Medical Education Centre, Northern General Hospital.Members browsed information stands and tasted the food provided to patients, before hearing from experts about the benefits of eating well and how various services work together to ensure people living with dementia continue to follow a healthy diet at every stage of their diagnosis. Members were also able to question the experts.Keep up to date with plans for future events by checking our website www.tinyurl.com/js6wuy9, following us on Twitter @shscft or calling membership officer Faye Mellors on 0114 271 8768.

Membership Matters

There have been some wonderful things happening around the Trust, so we have decided to have a little update of Involve to ensure we can bring you even more news now and in the future.

We have had an exciting few months in the run-up to our governor elections and I am delighted to inform you of 14 new appointments to the Council of Governors. Thank you to those members who used their vote in the elections this year. Turn to page 3 to meet your new governors and to

say goodbye to some of our longstanding governors, who will be greatly missed.

This year marks several changes for the Trust. As well as the new additions to the Council of Governors, we will be saying farewell to our Chair Professor Alan Walker OBE, who is coming to the end of his tenure. Our next edition will look over his years at the Trust as Chair, so keep an eye out for the Summer issue!

As always, I welcome your feedback, so please contact me if you have any comments on this edition or suggestions for future editions. Please email [email protected] or call me on 0114 271 8768.

Welcoming new governors

Thank you and Farewell! We will be saying farewell to three governors who will be leaving us after each serving the maximum three terms. John Kay, who is the former lead governor, Nev Wheeler OBE and Dorothy Cook have been with us since the beginning of

the Council of Governors.

Dorothy (pictured) says: “Soon after I became a governor, my interest and curiosity about mental health

became a passion and I have been privileged to meet so many approachable, and compassionate service users and staff. They are like one big family.”

Chair Alan Walker said: “John, Nev and Dorothy have served with distinction, and deserve the warmest possible thanks for their commitment and dedication over the past eight years. I know that I speak for all Board members and Governors, as well as countless staff and service users, when I say that they will be sorely missed. On a personal note, as Chair, I could

not have wished for better critical friends. Thank you.”

On behalf of the Trust we would like to say a huge THANK YOU and good luck for the future.

John Kay Nev Wheeler OBE

We are delighted to announce the appointment of 14 new governors to the Trust!

This has been a very exciting election due to the number of seats available and we are very much looking forward to welcoming our new governors.

A strong Council of Governors is essential to help us understand and respond to the views of our service users, carers, staff, and members of the public, as well as shape how the Trust develops to meet future need. A strong council also helps us tackle the issues faced by the Trust, and recruit more members to help make our membership representative of the people we serve.

Sadly Ian Downing, Carer Governor, has lost his seat. His contributions to the Trust during his two terms have been tremendous and widely valued. The Trust would like to thank him for his service and wish him well for the future.

The new governors are: Public North East – Mohammed Khawja ZiauddinYoung Service User – Michael ThomasPublic North West – John Buston (re-elected)Public South West – Rosemary de Ville (re-elected) and David HoulstonCarers – Sue Roe (re-elected) and Billie CritchlowService Users – Pat Molloy (re-elected), Adam Butcher, Richard Fletcher, Terry Proudfoot and Joan ToyStaff - Nursing – Vin Lewin (re-elected)Staff - Psychology – Deborah Gamsu

Travel emissions were one of the key targets at SHSC’s third NHS Sustainability Day.

The special event was held at our headquarters in Fulwood, with focus on recognition, information sharing and promotion of sustainable practices.

The theme for 2016 was ‘the impact that prevention can have on creating a sustainable health system’, and the event included representation and displays from leading figures in health and social care at SHSC.

Those included the Facilities Directorate, Finance and Procurement, Information Services, the Bike User Group, Health and Wellbeing, Nutrition and Hydration, Smoke Free and Sustainability Champions, as well as Infection Control.

Mark Gamble, head of estates at SHSC, said: “For many years we have invested time and resources in to the sustainable procurement, build and maintenance of our estate.

“This year we focused on travel. We would like staff to consider how they currently travel to and from work

and around the Trust and other organisations to undertake their work.”

Christina Woolston, event coordinator and estates and facilities support officer, said: “The NHS has a collective responsibility to reduce carbon emissions by 34% by 2020 to comply with the Climate Change Act, meeting an overall reduction of 50% by 2050.

“SHSC has already started on this journey through the implementation of its Sustainable Development Management Plan. Three key areas which we must target are energy, travel and procurement.

“I was very impressed with the attendance figures at the event. The stall holders who had taken part in this event were extremely happy with the participation they experienced from the attendees, having had an opportunity to speak with a wide range of attendees who will support and promote the practices and work streams they have in place.”

SHSC goes smoke freeWe’re delighted to announce SHSC will be smoke free from 31 May 2016.

The new policy, being introduced to coincide with World No Tobacco Day, is designed to help us meet our duty of care as a health provider, put National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance into practice and provide a safe, smoke free environment.

Support will be available to service users and staff to encourage them to not smoke while on Trust premises, including wards, units, grounds and car parks.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), which includes nicotine

patches, inhalers, gum and lozenges that help take away the urge to smoke, will be available to help people to manage not smoking.

For people on our wards, activities will be offered to help to replace the activity of smoking and for service users and staff who would like to quit altogether, support will be available.

Moira Leahy, project lead, said: “A lot of work and staff training has been undertaken to prepare for this. Trained staff on inpatient wards will be able to issue NRT, and we have more than 50 staff in the Trust accredited as specialist smoking cessation advisors.

“Throughout 2016, the Trust will be actively monitoring how things are going, to ensure we are being smoke free in the best way possible.”

For more information, visit www.shsc.nhs.uk/about-us/smokefree or email comments or questions to [email protected].

If you would like help to quit or cut down on smoking, email [email protected] or call Yorkshire Smoke Free Sheffield on 0800 612 0011 (free from landlines) or 0330 660 1166 (free from most mobiles).

Service users are already seeing the benefits of the facilities at our new Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), according to a focus group held recently.

Those who use the new Endcliffe Ward were asked for

their opinions about the unit after its opening.

The new facilities include 10 beds, an activity and therapy room, a sensory room and a green room for de-escalation. The unit also has a new visitors room and a quiet room. Outside there are three separate enclosed garden spaces for service users.

Feedback included that the additional space, such as the sensory room and the games room, is “extremely beneficial” and that the outdoors areas are a “significant improvement” on the previous unit.

Others said that having wider corridors makes a big difference, as it “makes it easier to walk past people without making eye contact if they feel angry or frightened”, as well as it being much quieter and calmer surroundings.

The new environment has also led to less use of seclusion, according to some of those asked.

A total of £6.5 million was spent on the new Endcliffe Ward and some enabling works on site. The PICU, located on the former Oakwood site at the Northern General Hospital’s Longley Centre, has now put us at the forefront of in-patient care and provides a first-class environment for service users.

Lisa Johnson, assistant service director at SHSC, said: “We’re really pleased to have received such fantastic feedback on the PICU. We worked closely with service users during the whole process to ask what they wanted to see from the new unit to ensure we were building a facility that would benefit them the most.

“This feedback means such a lot to us as it shows we have achieved what we set out to do, allowing us to provide care in the new purpose-built environment.”

Helen Mitchell, SHSC business planning partner, said:

“The results of this survey were generally extremely positive.

“Our staff value each and every one of our service users and are committed to providing excellent care and support.

“Surveys like this ensure we are getting the right feedback to help us continue to do just that.”

Our Winter survey provoked an overwhelmingly warm response from staff, service users and members of the public.

More than 75% of those surveyed agreed with four of the five objectives, with the fifth still garnering a response of 51% in agreement.

feedback for PICUFANTASTIC

Objective One, which 81% agreed with, explored

the possibility of all services producing and delivering an annual quality improvement programme, the Trust becoming

fully compliant with the Care Quality Commisson’s recommendations, and the Trust

reviewing safety of its services.

Objective Two saw the most positive response, with 85% of those surveyed agreeing with the prospect of services seeking feedback from service users, their families and carers, and sharing decision making across all parties. This objective also included a commitment to develop the Service User Engagement and Monitoring Unit (SUEMU) to collect information, and potentially involving service users in the delivery of services and management of care pathways.

Objective Three – reducing the Trust’s reliance on restrictive and institutional ways of providing care such as inpatient units, and developing ways to provide care closer to home in community and primary care settings – had 75% of support.

Objectives Four and Five received 53% and 80% of support respectively, and focused on maintaining the Trust’s financial sustainability. It prioritises spending according to decisions made with financial balance in mind (Four), and commitment to ensure corporate and clinical staff play an active role in the ways in which the organisation operates (Five).

NEWS IN BRIEF

The Board has appointed Phillip Easthope (pictured) as executive director of finance. As you may know, Phil had been interim executive director of finance following the departure of Paul Robinson last year.

SHSC has, in partnership with Primary Care Sheffield, been awarded the two Alternative Provider of Medical Services (APMS) contracts for the Clover Group and Sheffield City GP Medical Centre. The 15-year contracts cover the Clover Group of practices (Darnall Primary Care Centre, Highgate Surgery, Jordanthorpe Health Centre, the Mulberry Practice) and Sheffield City GP Medical Centre. This new collaboration will see us working in partnership with Primary Care Sheffield to deliver high quality primary care services - improving access to services and offering greater stability for staff and patients at some of the city’s most vulnerable practices.

We have signed up to the Sheffield Fair Employer Charter. This is a voluntary code of practice which promotes positive health and wellbeing among the city’s workforce and is part of the Our Fair City Campaign. The campaign was launched by Sheffield’s Fairness Commission, a cross-party group of political, business, community and religious representatives led by the Sheffield Executive Board.

The Care Quality Commission has recently inspected Buckwood View Nursing Home (for people with a learning disability) and has rated the service as ‘good’ in every domain and as ‘good’ overall. The Care Quality Commission also recently inspected Birch Avenue, which is run in partnership with South Yorkshire Housing Association, and has rated the service as ‘good’ overall.

The Community Development Workers Team organised an event to raise awareness of mental health issues in the BME community, in particular for older adults. There were a number of stalls to give information to people at the event which was mostly funded by the Time to Change Campaign and a kind donation by Darnall Dementia Group. The Community Development Workers were supported at the event by key partners the Older Adult Community Mental Health Teams, SOAR, and Darnall Dementia Group.

Update from our Muslim ChaplainSince joining SHSC a year ago, Muslim Chaplain Imam Camran Munir has given one-to-one spiritual and pastoral care, supported and advised staff about cultural and religious issues and helped develop new training. He has joined an Occupational Therapy art group, talked about his work on local radio, and taken on the task of being Muslim Chaplain to the Longley Centre, Michael Carlisle Centre and Forest Lodge.

Camran appreciated his Trust welcome event as a chance to celebrate and affirm the importance of his post. He was joined by SHSC Chair Prof. Alan Walker CBE, Chief Executive Kevan Taylor, Trust staff, friends from the diverse Muslim community, and his wife and one-year-old twin boys.

He said: “I feel blessed to be able to support service users who are at their most vulnerable. It is a calling from God I have responded to.”

Camran’s comments follow a visit by 20 Trust staff to Madina Mosque on Worsley Road, Sharrow, for a guided tour and the opportunity to find out how Muslims in the Nether Edge and Sharrow areas of the city worship and live out their faith.

The visit formed part of an ongoing programme to support staff teams in their work with BME (black and minority ethnic) communities.

SHSC Chair Alan Walker said: “The visit confirmed our shared values and common humanity and we could not have had a warmer welcome. This was part of a long-standing partnership with Madina Mosque and other Muslim groups in the city.”

Sally Ross, leader of the multi-faith Chaplaincy team, said: “We learned that Muslims express their love of God through their commitment to prayer, hospitality, charitable giving and working with other faith and community organisations to provide food banks and soup kitchens for the most vulnerable people in Sheffield.”

SUSEG sets agenda

Award for ‘exceptional’ Michelle

Organisers of an event held to improve collaboration and engagement with service users are looking to turn ideas suggested on the day into a reality of improved services.

The Service Users Engagement Group (SUSEG) held the ‘Engage. Transform. Flourish’ event, which was attended by approximately 50% staff and 50% service users and featured workshops, debates, exercises and presentations.

The event aimed to help improve the quality of SHSC services, enable staff and service users to work together better, and ensure service users get more involved in designing services that meet their needs.

SUSEG Chair Professor Brendan Stone said: “The group was formed two years ago to monitor and

scrutinise the Trust’s strategy, policies and services and we’re now moving into phase two, so this event was all about generating ideas for the next two to five years.”

A number of commitments were discussed including: • Employing peer support workers

with lived experience of mental health problems

• Working with service users on redesigning care environments, including in-patient settings

• Supporting service users to develop and lead a variety of initiatives

Artist Emma Kitchen also attended the event to capture the day with creative images and artefacts (pictured).

Prof Stone said: “The people involved were vocal and engaged. The event

was held with a view that it helps set the agenda, and feeds into what happens next for the Trust’s services and service users. We want to embed change and continue to engage people in these important conversations.”

An ‘inspiring’ and ‘empowering’ SHSC senior manager has won a national award.

Michelle Fearon, service director, Specialist Directorate, won Inspirational Leader of the Year at the annual NHS Leadership Recognition Awards for her exceptional leadership across a large and diverse range of complex clinical services, and her sustained commitment to engagement with service users, carers and staff.

The national award follows Michelle taking the NHS Inspirational Leader of the Year title at the Yorkshire and Humber Awards. As a regional winner, Michelle was entered into the national event, which was hosted by the

NHS Leadership Academy in partnership with Guardian Jobs and took place at the Senate House, University of London.

“I’m very pleased and completely shocked to have won,” said Michelle. “My focus is on making sure we are providing the best quality care for service users and it is a little overwhelming to receive this national recognition.”

Kevan Taylor, SHSC Chief Executive, said: “Michelle is a much-valued colleague who inspires and empowers her staff and peers. These awards celebrate leadership at all levels throughout the NHS and we are extremely proud that Michelle has won.”

Clare Horton, The Guardian Healthcare Networks’ content editor, said: “The panel felt the winner of this award showed very strong skills across all of the categories.

“Their team described them as ‘inspirational, an exceptional example of leadership in action, a widely respected, highly-regarded role model’ and we couldn’t agree more.

“They’ve not been afraid to take on difficult and challenging work, the results of which have been improved quality of care and much greater engagement. When things have felt difficult, they have led the way.

“We know she’ll continue to inspire others in whatever she does.”

This latest recognition follows the Trust being named as one of top 120 places to work in healthcare and its serious mental illness and physical health project winning a national Positive Practice in Mental Health Award last year.
