ABOUT OUR PROGRAMME

You could choose either the Doing Business in China Module (Innovation and Entrepreneurship) or the Chinese Language and Culture Module when you apply for the program. The business lectures and industry field trips of the DBIC module ensure you have a good understanding of the business communities in China’s rapidly growing economy. And the Overview of China lectures and the basic Chinese language learning of the CLAC module help you understand what a real China is.

The visits to cultural centres in Shanghai and a local community, as well as the traditional Chinese art classes are all arranged for both modules. You could discover the underlying values of Chinese culture and history.

During your first week in the summer school, you will be located in Jiading campus, which offers the unique combination of a modern city and a traditional old town. In the second week, you will be accommodated in our Yanchang campus, five stops on the metro from the heart of the world-famous metropolis that is Shanghai.

In the first week you will visit the delightful old quarter of Jiading and also be taken on a full-day visit to Shanghai. In the second week you will be living close to downtown Shanghai. See the famous Pudong sky-line from the Bund, with its handsome old European-style buildings alongside the Huangpu River. Go for a scenic boat trip on the river or visit the delightful Yuyuan Garden with its traditional Chinese buildings crowded round water features and squares. Take a walk down the famous Nanjing Road, home to the most glamorous shops in China, and visit Xintiandi with its bars, café’s and nightclubs. Shanghai is home to several world-class museums and art galleries and offers so much to see and do.

Our Summer School is a highly valuable educational experience and, with the support of the Business School and representatives of the business community, offers a fast track to observe the Chinese macro-economic landscape, the local business environment and the unique Chinese enterprise management model. The inspirational lectures guide you on doing business in China and the corporate visits add excitement and meaning to the summer school.

Classes in basic Chinese are a highly-valued part of the program. SILC has invited experienced Chinese teachers and enthusiastic Chinese student volunteers to join you. Chinese will not only be taught but also practiced. A background knowledge of Mandarin will not only assist you in dealing with everyday life in China, but also provide an understanding of Chinese culture and the local community. And this year we add a new part to this program which is the Overview of China lectures. The lectures help you have a better understanding of China from the perspectives of Chinese history, philosophy, religion, society, education and language and idioms.

We have held the SILC Summer School each year since 2012 and it has been developed in the light of the feedback that we have obtained from students. The Summer School is very highly rated, students have told us that it is a life-changing experience and we are proud to be able to offer this wonderful opportunity.

We have welcomed students from institutions all over the world, such as King’s College London and Bangor University in the UK, Laurentian University in Canada and University of Technology Sydney in Australia.
