The stadiums in Austria

12

Vienna, Ernst Happel stadium (50,000)Built in 1931 and renamed theErnst Happel stadium in 1993,the venue for the final hasbeen extensively renovatedover the past three years. Thenew VIP area – two floors,1,850m2, capacity of 960people – was opened on 1 March 2006 for the international matchbetween Austria and Canada. Other additions: undersoil heating, two new scoreboards, electronic ticket barriers and direct accessto the Vienna underground network. The enlarged spectator areaswill be ready by the beginning of 2008 and will be used for the firsttime at the matches against Germany (6 February 2008) and Hol-land (26 March 2008).

Klagenfurt, Wörthersee stadium (30,000)The old stadium was demo-lished in November 2005 andbuilding work on the newstadium commenced barelytwo months later. The stadiumwas opened on 7 September2007 for the international be-

tween Austria and Japan. The post-UEFA EURO 2008™ downsizing(to a capacity of 12,000) will take place in 2009, at a cost of EUR 7million. It will be financed by the Austrian state and the spare standswill be used in other stadiums in Austria. In all, the project costs EUR66.6 million (funded in equal proportions by the federal, provincialand municipal authorities).

Salzburg, Wals Siezenheim stadium (30,000)The highlight of the renova-tion work (increasing the ca-pacity from 18,000 to 30,000)was the lifting of the roof on 6June 2006. The 17,000m2 roofwas raised by 10.5 metresusing 68 supporting pillars andsteel cables with an exceptionally high load-bearing capacity. Theroof weighs 1,900 tonnes, the equivalent of 10 Boeing 747s. The first match using the new stadium capacity and on a (temporary)natural pitch was played on 25 July 2007 (Salzburg – Arsenal).

Innsbruck, Tivoli NEU (30,000)The stadium was opened in2001 with a capacity of18,000. Unlike in Salzburg, theroof was lifted in three stages. The expansion was finished in September 2007 and, just a few weeks later, on 17

October, the stadium hosted a friendly match between Austria andthe Ivory Coast. After UEFA EURO 2008™, the stadium will be scaledback to its original size.

The stadiums in Switzerland

Zurich, Letzigrund (30,000)The new stadium was builtextremely quickly. In a re-ferendum on 5 June 2005, thepeople of Zurich approved aEUR 69 million loan and workbegan five months later. Theold stadium was demolishedon 22 August 2006. Just over two years after the referendum, thenew Letzigrund was opened for the traditional “Weltklasse Zürich”athletics meeting on 7 September 2007. On 13 October 2007,Switzerland beat fellow host nation Austria 3-1 there in a friendly.

Basel, St Jakob Park (40,000)The stadium, complete withits own station, was opened in2001. It also features a shop-ping centre with restaurantsand fitness studio, and a nurs-ing home. On 15 November2006, Switzerland played Brazil

in front of 39,000 spectators at St Jakob Park. The capacity is beingincreased slightly for the final rounds of the European Champion-ship. Construction work on the adjacent buildings, including a newaccess platform for spectators, was completed at the beginning ofthe year.

Berne, Stade de Suisse (30,000)The new stadium was inaugu-rated in August 2005 on thesite of the legendary Wank-dorf stadium, the venue ofthe “miracle of Berne” in the1954 World Cup. Since itsinauguration, the new multi-functional arena has hosted many Swiss league matches as well as FC Thun’s matches in the UEFA Champions League in 2005/06.The Stade de Suisse staged the Swiss Cup final on 28 May 2007. Theartificial surface will be replaced with natural grass in April 2008.

Geneva, Stade de Genève (30,000)The stadium was opened inLa Praille, near the Frenchborder, in 2003. Only slightadjustments were required forUEFA EURO 2008™. The multi-functional venue includes ashopping centre, a hotel and

other service companies. The stadium offers direct access to theGeneva RER network, its own station and the motorway. The inter-national friendly between Switzerland and the Netherlands tookplace at the Stade de Genève on 22 August 2007.

The Swiss Football Association (SFV) was one of the sevenfounder members of FIFA in 1904. The SFV itself was esta-blished in 1895. Today, with around 1,500 clubs, 13,000teams and 250,000 licensed players on its books, it is thecountry’s largest sports organisation.

The Swiss have qualified twice for the UEFA EuropeanChampionship finals (1996 and 2004), going out after the group phase on both occasions. In England in 1996,Switzerland achieved a highly respectable 1-1 draw withthe host nation, but lost their other two matches (1-0 toScotland and 2-0 to the Netherlands). In Portugal in 2004,they drew 0-0 with Croatia before losing 3-0 to Englandand 3-1 to France. The Swiss consolation goal went downin the history books, as 18-year-old Johan Vonlanthenbroke Englishman Wayne Rooney’s record (at 25) as theyoungest ever goalscorer at a European Championshipfinal round.

Switzerland’s most-capped player is Heinz Hermann, whoappeared 117 times for the national team. The top goal-

The old trophy, designed by Arthus Bertrand in Paris in1960, had been in service for 45 years. Now, nearly half acentury later, it is being confined to the trophy cabinet, paving the way for the new Henri Delaunay trophy. Thenew trophy is 18cm taller and 2kg lighter (i.e. 60cm highand 8kg in weight). The modern design was conceivedby British lifestyle house Asprey of London. Another newfeature is the inscription of the names of all previouswinners on the back. The trophy – named after HenriDelaunay, UEFA’s first general secretary – will be pre-sented to the newly crowned European champions on 29 June 2008. It will remain the property of UEFA until acountry wins it either three times in a row or five times in all.

Doping controls EURO Experience Tour

These will be carried out at all 31 final-round matches –with, for the first time, not only urine but also blood tests(two players per team). Tests will also be conducted in therun-up to the finals and at many qualifying matches. Overthe last ten years (1995–2005), around 3,900 players havebeen tested at UEFA competitions – of those, only 12 havetested positive. Since 2005 UEFA has also carried out spotchecks: in the previous Champions League season all 32 teams were tested at least once. In 51 spot checks, a total of 506 players were tested, even for EPO in mostcases. All tests came back negative. UEFA spends aroundEUR 1.6 million on its doping control programme eachyear. UEFA currently has a pool of 40 anti-doping experts, each of whom has to pass annual aptitude tests.

As part of a EURO Experience Tour, the Henri Delaunaytrophy will pay a visit to 13 towns in Austria and Switzer-land, together with the largest inflatable tour tent in theworld (height: 14m, width: 40m, length: 60m, weight: 10t).Visitors can come along, free of charge, to watch a filmabout the history of the UEFA European Football Cham-pionship, see the original, brand-new European Cham-pionship trophy and make use of an interactive multi-media area. Also part of the tour is the official UEFA EURO2008™ hot-air balloon, in the shape of the EuropeanChampionship trophy.

EURO history – From 1960 to the present day

44

1927 is documented as the year in which Henri Delaunay, president of the French Football Federation and later the first-ever general secretary of UEFA, put forward at a FIFA meeting the idea of a European competition fornational teams. He pointed to South America, where acomparable (continental) competition had been stagedsince 1916.

Just 30 years later, Henri Delaunay’s idea became a reality: the first UEFA European Football Championshipwas held in France in 1960. The final in Paris was won bythe USSR, who beat Yugoslavia 2-1 in the final in front of17,966 spectators.

The competition’s biggest ever crowd – a record that has yet to be beaten – watched the 1964 final at theEstadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid. Around 125,000fans witnessed the hosts’ 2-1 victory over the USSR. How-ever, the official attendance was given as only 79,115.

UEFA EURO 2008™ is the 13th final tournament of the UEFAEuropean Football Championship. A total of 173 final-round matches have been played to date, watched by

6.5 million spectators (an average of 37,500 per match)and featuring 426 goals (2.46 per match). Germany is themost successful nation with three victories, followed byFrance with two. The USSR, Spain, Italy, Czechoslovakia, the Netherlands, Denmark and Greece have each wonthe tournament once.

The first European football champions ever, the Soviet Union.

The twin mascots, Trix and Flix, were created by WarnerBros. Consumer Products. Developing the mascots took agood six months, about 4,000 working hours and morethan 100 different drafts. This is the first time ever that aUEFA European Championship has been represented bytwin mascots. The number two is significant in severalways: firstly because you need at least two people toplay football and secondly because UEFA EURO 2008™ isbeing staged in two different countries. The twins repre-sent fair play, teamwork and tolerance.

Media rights

54

UEFA is treading new ground for the 2008 EuropeanChampionship final round. Philippe Le Floc´h, Director ofMarketing and Media Rights, says: “Between 1960 and2004, we assigned the European broadcasting rights tothe European Broadcasting Union, which bought the TVrights on behalf of its members and was responsible forthe production and transmission of pictures during thefinal round. It was a groundbreaking decision to departfrom this tradition.”

Instead, UEFA has assigned the European broadcastingrights to the Sportfive marketing agency. The media rightswere sold on a market-by-market basis in a process thatlasted about two years. “One condition was that most of the 31 matches are shown on free-to-air TV,” Le Floc´hadded, “including the opening match, the quarter-finals,the semi-finals and the final itself, as well as all matchesinvolving the national team of the respective country.”

In addition, TV broadcasters will be given the opportunityto show UEFA EURO 2008™ matches on a wide range ofmedia platforms, such as the Internet and mobile phones.

About 700 people will be working to broadcast pictures of the 31 matches.

Intersport is the official sports shopfor UEFA EURO 2008™. Around 3,000 products (supplied by nearly 40 licensees) are available, with Trix and Flixappearing on about half of them. The product rangeincludes leisurewear, footballs, bags and stationery.

Merchandising Mode of play

308 matches, i.e. 27,720 minutes of football, were neededto establish who the 14 final-round participants would be(alongside the two hosts). Matches were played in sevengroups (six with seven teams and one with eight). The top two teams in each group qualified for the finaltournament. Each of the 16 teams will play three groupmatches, with the top two in each of the four groupscontesting the quarter-finals. From there, the knock-outsystem continues.

If, after the quarter-finals, any match ends as a draw after normal time, two 15-minute periods of extra time willbe played. If there is still no winner, the match will bedecided on penalties.

There will be about 3,000 licensed products for UEFA EURO 2008™.

UEFA will distribute a total of EUR 184 million among the 16participating teams (in 2004 it was EUR 129m). Each teamis guaranteed a EUR 7.5m lump sum, with a bonus of EUR 1m for each group-stage win and EUR 500,000 for a draw. Teams that reach the quarter-finals will receivean extra EUR 2m, and EUR 3m for a place in the semis. TheEuropean champion 2008 will cash in an additional EUR7.5m, while the runner-up gets a respectable EUR 4.5m.This means, in an ideal world, that if the eventual cham-pion wins all three of its group matches, it could earn EUR23 million.

Prize money Public economic benefits

The Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna estimatesthat Austria will benefit from an added value of aroundEUR 390 million, a purchasing power increase of EUR 260million and around 5,400 new jobs. In Switzerland, a studyby Rütter & Partner suggests that economic benefits willbe worth about EUR 790 million, with gross added value ofapproximately EUR 455 million. Up to 550,000 additionalhotel bookings and at least 6,300 new full-time jobs (overa one-year period) can be expected.
