Sidney Corbett, born in 1960 in Chicago, studied music and philosophy at the University of California, San Diego, Yale University, where he earned his doctorate in 1989 and from 1985 to 1988 at the Hamburg Academy of Music with György Ligeti. Corbett has lived primarily in Europe since 1985. His musical output, which includes opera and other forms of musical theatre, orchestral and chamber music and music for the voice has received numerous prizes and awards and is performed regularly by leading orchestras, ensembles and soloists worldwide. He has been professor of composition at the University of Performing Arts in Mannheim since 2006 and is also the director of their Forum for New Music. He has been musical director of the GNM Mannheim (Society for New Music Mannheim) since 2015.
Corbett is an artist outside the boundaries of „new music“ mainstream whose stance is nonetheless explicitly contemporary. His work draws upon a broad range of sources, both musical and extra-musical, including literature and the visual arts and engages philosophical and theological questions. A strong sense of lyricism and complexly overlaid rhythmic pulsations are characteristic of his music. Corbett is an active guitarist and was founding member of the avantgarde techno-house group vierte heimat and also performs in various improvisation groups. His music is firmly established in the international music world.
A particular emphasis in his recent work has been in the area of music theatre. He has written six operas, among them NOACH, after a libretto by Christoph Hein (Bremen 2001), Das Große Heft (The Notebook), after the novel by Agosta Kristof (Osnabrück 2013) and Die Andere (The Other), again after a libretto by Christoph Hein (Magdeburg 2016). His most recent opera, San Paolo, after an unrealized screenplay by Pier Paolo Pasolini premiered in Osnabrück in April 2018 and was awarded the 2018 Pfalz Prize for Music.
Corbett’s literary leanings are also evidenced by his numerous song cycles and vocal works on texts by Christine Lavant, Barbara Köhler and Roland Barthes among others. Literary influences can also be found in his instrumental music, for example in Yaël for violin and orchestra, which is inspired by the writings of Edmond Jabès or his Third Symphony, Breathing the Water, for soprano, trumpet and contrabass with string orchestra, which was premiered by the Staatskapelle Berlin and in which texts by Denise Levertov and Amal Al-Jubouri are juxtaposed. One of his most recent works, Aporia, commissioned by the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players and premiered there in May 2019, also draws on a literary source, in the case the writings of Jacques Derrida.
His music is published by Edition Nova Vita Berlin and Edition Peters Leipzig. CDs of his music have been released on Kreuzberg Records, Cybele, Mode, CRI, Edition Zeitklang, Blue Griffin, Edition Kopernikus and Ambitus. Corbett lives with his wife and three children in Schwetzingen.

Sidney Corbett, geboren 1960 in Chicago, studierte Musik und Philosophie an der University of California, der University of San Diego und der Yale University, wo er 1989 promovierte, sowie von 1985 bis 1988 an der Musikhochschule Hamburg bei György Ligeti. Seit 1985 lebt Corbett vorwiegend in Europa. Sein musikalisches Schaffen, welches Werke für Oper und andere Formen des Musiktheaters, Orchester- und Kammermusik sowie Gesangsliteratur umfasst, wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen und Auszeichnungen geehrt und wird regelmäßig von renommierten Orchestern, Ensembles und Solisten weltweit aufgeführt. Seit 2006 ist er Professor für Komposition an der Hochschule für Darstellende Kunst in Mannheim und Leiter des dortigen Forums für Neue Musik und seit 2015 musikalischer Leiter der Gesellschaft für Neue Musik Mannheim.
Corbett ist ein Künstler, der sich nur schwer im musikalischen Mainstream der Neuen Musik verordnen lässt, so ist seine Haltung aber dennoch explizit zeitgenössisch. Sein Werk stützt sich auf eine breit gefächerte Palette von musikalischen und außermusikalischen Quellen, darunter Literatur und bildende Kunst, und beschäftigt sich mit philosophischen und theologischen Fragen. Charakteristisch für seine Musik sind ein ausgeprägter Sinn für Lyrik und komplex überlagerte rhythmische Pulsationen. Corbett ist aktiver Gitarrist und war Gründungsmitglied der avantgardistischen Techno-House-Gruppierung vierte heimat und tritt auch in verschiedenen Improvisationsformationen auf. Seine Musik ist in der internationalen Musikszene fest etabliert.
Ein besonderer Fokus seiner jüngsten Arbeit liegt im Bereich des Musiktheaters. Insgesamt sechs Opern hat er geschrieben, darunter NOACH, nach einem Libretto von Christoph Hein (Bremen 2001), Das große Heft, nach dem Roman von Agosta Kristof (Osnabrück 2013), und Die Andere, ebenso nach einem Libretto von Christoph Hein (Magdeburg 2016). Seine zuletzt komponierte Oper San Paolo, nach einem unrealisierten Drehbuch von Pier Paolo Pasolini, wurde im April 2018 in Osnabrück uraufgeführt und erhielt den Pfalzpreis für Musik 2018.
Corbetts literarische Neigung wird auch durch seine zahlreichen Liederzyklen und Vokalwerke zu Texten von Autoren wie Christine Lavant, Barbara Köhler und Roland Barthes bekräftigt. Literarische Einflüsse finden sich auch in seiner Instrumentalmusik, so zum Beispiel in Yaël für Violine und Orchester, welches von Schriften Edmond Jabès inspiriert ist, oder seiner Dritten Symphonie Breathing the Water für Sopran, Trompete und Kontrabass mit Streicherorchester, das von der Staatskapelle Berlin uraufgeführt wurde und in dem Texte von Denise Levertov und Amal Al-Jubouri nebeneinander gestellt werden. Eines seiner neuesten Werke, Aporia, greift ebenfalls auf eine literarische Quelle zurück, es handelt sich dabei um Schriften Jacques Derridas, und wurde als Auftragskomposition der San Francisco Contemporary Music Players im Mai 2019 uraufgeführt.
Seine Musik wird bei der Edition Nova Vita Berlin und vom Musikverlag Edition Peters Leipzig verlegt und weltweit vertrieben.
