Dear Colleagues

This issue of SKD is one of the two that will be published this year. We have reduced the frequency of this magazine from quarterly to half yearly for the simple reason that we want to cut down on our costs in these times of global recession and local economic down-turn.

This is not the only step taken by your management to keep our ship on even keel and weather the present storm.

A series of steps have been taken to protect the interests of the company and the employees so that together we can sail through these uncharted waters to attain success and maintain sustain-ability. You will be happy to know that the management has led from the front and voluntarily given up many facilities or curtailed existing facilities so that together we can overcome present difficulties.

The main aim of the top leadership is to ensure that maximum jobs are saved and the heartbreaking specter of parting from colleagues is avoided. We are perhaps among the few companies that are still hiring for acutely required manpower but all this can only continue if the world and Pakistan can surmount present difficulties within a reasonable

period of time.I am confident that with our portfolio of products, that represent environment friendly technologies, we have much to offer to Pakistan and achieve success while at the same time remaining committed to our ethical and moral principles.

As you all know we have launched a campaign, “Cash is King” and already have the first two winners whose pictures you will find in this issue. This demonstrates the importance your management attaches to positive cash flow.

We believe that this is the life line of the company. Profit in figures makes pretty good reading but it cannot pay your salaries or the suppliers bills. Cash in hand is what really counts. Speaking of suppliers, I must point out that our suppliers are very lucky that they are well looked after by our concerned managers and paid promptly.

I would request not only our customers but also our managers to treat Siemens in the same manner and ensure prompt payment for our supplies so that this chain of prompt payments to our suppliers and salaries to our staff can continue, unhindered.

Another important aspect of success is constant self evaluation and indeed learning from the evaluation of others. Criticism at the work place must be welcomed not resented, and treated as free advice that can help improve your performance.

Successful people welcome criticism and indeed challenge those around them to find shortcomings in their performance so they can perform even better.

Only if there is no desire to improve will

there be resentment against healthy criticism. I strongly think that mutual evaluation, leading to improvements in processes and attitudes can revolution-ize an organization. A positive attitude towards criticism also eliminates infighting which serves as a cancer to destroy organizations.

As this publication also reaches policy makers in the highest echelons of the government I would like to point out that the engineering industry in any country forms the backbone of the economy. Globally approx 60% of trade is of engineering based goods and services.

An engineering industry encouraged could be the engine for turning around the economy of the country and become the driving force for the future success of Pakistan. On the other hand an overtaxed engineering industry can slow down our growth and lead to further more serious recession in the country.

I am sure that the present government, that reflects the aspiration of the people, will act firmly to boost the engineering industry and give it the due importance it deserves.

In the end I again request all employees to put their heads down and work relentlessly to tide over these difficult times.

Over the years I have seen the amazing results produced by all of you and I am sure that these difficult times will only strengthen your resolve to reach even greater heights, and like the true fighters you have always been, win this one with flying colors.

Message from the MD

Siemens Pakistan has won two of the top awards in the country considered the Oscars in their respective areas. The first was the Management Association of Pakistan Excellence award in which Siemens came out on top winning not only best in Engineering Sector category but also the best managed company on an overall basis. The selection for this award is based on very stringent criteria and requires thorough investigation of all corporate practices by a jury that meets with top management to verify all data supplied.

This year we also won the Annual Corporate Report Award organized by the most prestigious institutions of the country the Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan. Here again we bagged the top slot not only in the Engineering Sector but also on an overall basis placing our Annual Report on top for the year 2008.

It is rare that a company has won both these awards in the same year and wins we are the first to attain this honor. The MD who was present on both occasions

lauded the efforts of his team and declared it the result of team work and dedication.

Here is the latest issue of SKD. As you all know we have restricted its publication to twice a year for the purpose of saving costs. This does not however mean that we will compromise in any way on the high standards of editorial content and quality of printing.

Actually since we need to use limited resources for maximum benefit our endeavor will be to increase quality and reduce costs. The result is before you and I hope that you will enjoy the many stories of success that this issue brings to you and will help to invigorate you to duplicate these benchmarks of success.

Solar Valley: Solar Power to become Cheaper

29 companies and twelve research institutes from Central Germany have one common goal: solar electricity should be competitively priced when compared with conventional electricity. And Solar Valley Mittel-deutschland in Bitterfeld-Wolfen is getting closer and closer to this goal, with the largest individual project

"xµ-Cells” having recently been launched. Designated a Cluster of Excellence by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research just last year, the association has committed itself to reducing the cost of electricity from roof systems by 2015 so that it is cheaper than conventionally generated electricity. The Cluster of Excel-lence's individual projects were approved several weeks ago. The most extensive project, the "xµ-Cells” project, is primarily concerned with minimizing material use. The focus is therefore on producing thinner cells and increasing cell efficiency.

To do this, Solar Valley has enlisted the help of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) in Freiburg. The ISE can demonstrate several record efficiencies with small laboratory cells such as the world's best value to date for a multicrystalline silicon solar cell. The 200 researchers in Freiburg working in the PV sector are already looking forward to working with the scientists from Saxony-Anhalt. "In the past, we have seen good results with the Cluster of Excellence's industry partners in the area of production-related processing,” revealed Dr. Ralf Preu, Department Head of Photovoltaic Production Technology and Quality Assurance at Fraunhofer ISE. The Fraunhofer Centre for Silicon Photovoltaics CSP in Halle will take on the overall scientific co-ordination of the "xµ-Cells” project.

Solar Valley is the silicon photovoltaics centre with the highest concentration of companies in the world. The cluster is made up of 29 companies, seven research and development institutes and four universities in three federal states, mostly from Saxony-Anhalt. All photovoltaic technologies in Saxony-Anhalt are also combined in Solar Valley.

EnergyPower from the World’s Highest Dam Wall

Siemens is installing a gas-insulated high voltage line (GIL) with a total tube length of about 3.2 kilometers for the world’s largest dam wall, at the Jinping I hydropower plant in China. A GIL’s high performance allows it to transmit larger amounts of

energy than is possible with cables — in this case between the foot of the 305-meter-high dam wall and the overhead line at the dam’s water level.

The power plant poses a formidable challenge: The power generated must be transmitted in the power plant cavern in a vertical tunnel over a distance of about 220 meters. Unlike a high voltage cable, a GIL features a special design that does not entail a risk of fire.

A GIL’s transmission losses are lower than those of high voltage cables or overhead lines. The gas insulation system remains practically unaffected by the passing of time, so the simple, nearly maintenance-free construction ensures a long service life.

Siemens Generates Solar Power for California

Siemens will be installing a steam turbine into the Invapah Solar Complex, the first commercial solar thermal power plant in the U.S. to feature a power tower. The steam will be gener-ated from water heated by thousands of mirrors. The facility in

California’s Mojave Desert is being built by BrightSource Energy. The Mojave Desert also includes Death Valley, where summer temperatures can climb to 45 degrees Celsius. Solar power technologies represent an important component of the

Siemens portfolio of environmental products, with which the company generated €19 billion in sales in fiscal year 2008.

Siemens will be delivering a steam turbine generator with an output of 123 megawatts (MW). When the power plant commences opera-tions in late 2011, it will supply climate-friendly solar power to 35,000 households. The experts at Siemens Energy adapted the SST-900 industrial steam turbine, with reheat, to the special challenges that solar technology poses.

The solar power station will be equipped with individually guided mirrors (heliostats) that reflect the sunlight directly to a boiler at the top of a tower. The heliostats are arranged in an asymmetric arc around the tower. The boiler at the top of the tower produces steam at a temperature of 550 degrees Celsius. This steam is subject to a high pressure and can thus drive a turbine. After the steam has cooled off, it is channeled back into the boiler, where it is reheated to flow through a low-pressure turbine. This reheating process increases the power station’s efficiency under varying operating conditions. In addition to starting up quickly, the turbine can operate flexibly to handle load fluctuations.

Bio-mass heating power station in Böblingen

The SIPAPER Reject Power Station in Böblingen (Germany) has been transforming fine hacked material into electricity and heat since September 2008. Fine wood sieve residue from the surrounding gardens and forests, which would block up the furnace gratings of large power stations are burned in the new heating power station in a combustion chamber at 950 degrees Celsius.

The annual amount of fuel, of about 20,000 tons, creates the energy for supplying 1,500

households with electricity for one year. This is equivalent to a saving of approximately 2.7 million liters of heating oil, the CO2 emission is reduced by 1,300 tons annually.

height of 18 ft. can sufficiently house 2 large standard power transformers at the same time curtailing the previous painting PCT by 50%. With this increase in productivity now the painting capacity is capable enough to cater the enhanced PT as well as the large distribution transformer production demand. On the environmental side the paint fumes exhaust coming out from the chamber is treated inside the remote treatment plant located at the top of the chamber which separates the

paint residues from exhaust before allowing it to the environment.

The design of the painting facility is conceived by BU TR Production engineers in collaboration with Siemens Transformer Sabugo, Portugal & their supplier at Toledo, Spain. Complete fabrication & development work is carried out by local suppliers under the direct supervision of TR Production & Shared Services (SS-1).

Transformer Painting Facility Inaugurated

First 220 kV Transformer Made in Pakistan

History was created when the first locally manufactured 220kV Trans-former rolled out of Siemens Industrial complex in SITE. This was a landmark moment for the power industry not only in Pakistan but the entire region. The first transformer was dispatched to WAPDA network after a simple

ceremony attended by WAPDA and Siemens officials.

Mr. Saleem Arif, advisor to PEPCO speaking on the occasion congratulated Siemens on this milestone. He said that we expect power demand to rise substantially in the coming years and now we can depend on locally produced equipment which was before imported from abroad.

Speaking on the occasion the Managing Director of Siemens Pakistan termed the roll out of this the first power Transformer of 220

kV in the history of Pakistan as a historic moment and a landmark in the indus-trial history of the country. He said this roll out proved that the hard working people of Pakistan can achieve any target if they are provided with the resources, know-how and positive working environment. Mr.Sohail

Wajahat said that Siemens has always set landmarks like being the first to export substantial quantities of engineering goods from the country providing a stable backbone for exports from the country. He said the local manufacture of this huge transformer will not only save foreign exchange but also earn huge amounts of foreign exchange for the country and help develop the power sector of the country. He praised WAPDA for its efforts to encourage local manufactur-ing and said that without such encour-agement it would not have been possible for the local power engineering industry to grow. He said he was very happy that at a time when we were engulfed with depressing news this remarkable feat of locally producing such a power transformer through local resources has provided a positive image of Pakistan and enhanced our image in the world.

Those who attended the ceremony from WAPDA included Mr. Tahir Basharat Cheema, Director General PEPCO and Mr. Saleem Arif, advisor to PEPCO.

IndustryAutomatic Toxicity Test System for Drinking Water

Researchers from Siemens Corporate Technology have devel-oped a fully automatic system to test drinking water for the presence of toxic substances. The lab demonstration model can analyze water samples at a rate of one every 15 minutes and is sensitive to over 100 toxins, including insecticides and chemical weapons. At the heart of the system is a biosensor that measures the activity of special enzymes.

The signal is transmitted electrically, which means that the system is fast, highly sensitive, and durable. Initial talks are now being held to discuss the possibility of developing the demonstration model into a marketable product.

At present, fish are often used to monitor the quality of drinking water. If behave in unusual ways, the water is subject to a thorough check. Around once a week, lab workers also carry out a detailed analysis for toxins. The Siemens system, by contrast, continually removes a sample from the pipe and

tests it for harmful substances. No trained employees are required.

Siemens’ new Protegra CS systems deliver Type II water for healthcare and laboratory markets

Siemens Water Technologies introduces the Protegra CS water system that combines reverse osmosis (RO) and continuous electrode ioniza-tion (CEDI) technologies to produce consistent ASTM Type II pure water quality from a soft water source. Available in four models with flow rates from 120 to 750 liters per

hour, the Protegra CS system can supply pure water to an entire building or to one laboratory with multiple points of use.

The Protegra CS system combines RO and CEDI technologies to produce consistent high quality water. Protegra CS is ideally

suited for higher flow applications, such as feeding autoclaves, glassware washers and environ-mental chambers.

All system components are contained in a single compact cabinet with removable side panels for easy maintenance. These eco-friendly systems can be fully integrated into a central purification system or a loop make-up and delivery system. Water quality sensors throughout the system send data to an easy to read control panel display located on the front of the system

cabinet.

The Protegra CS system uses high-capacity RO membrane, and is designed to remove dissolved solids from the feed water source while sending minimal reject water to drain.

The system also uses a single CEDI module that continually regenerates, eliminating the use of costly chemicals. The

maintenance-free CEDI module consists of ion exchange resins and electricity to remove ions from water, resulting in a purified water quality of up to 17 megohm-cm

Comfortable Office

Siemens Corpo-rate Technol-ogy is working on sensors which can monitor the climate in buildings

and make it comfortable. The scientists develop sensors not only for measuring light and temperature but also for detecting odors and measuring different gases, such as CO2.

The goal of the Siemens researchers is to develop sensors which act as the sensory organs of buildings and pass on their information to a building management system. Thanks to the tiny watchmen, the management system knows, for example, where aggressive substances have leaked or simply where the lights are to be switched off or the windows opened due to too high a CO2 level in the air.

Today, CT scans have become a rapid, accurate, and common clinical diagnostic tool for emergency situations and cardiac studies. Recent advances in multi-detector-row computed tomography (CT) technology have continuously improved the

quality of non-invasive diagnostic imaging. Various studies have demonstrated a high quality CT images for the diagnosis. Studies have been published assessing the diagnostic perfor-mance of CT coronary angiography with different generations of scanners.

At Siemens Healthcare being one step ahead means not only having the most innovative CT scanner but also to prove clinical relevance The recently introduced SIEMENS Dual-Source CT (DSCT) scanner – SOMATOM Definition is characterized by

two x-ray tubes and two corresponding detectors.

The new DSCT scanner system offers unprecedented image quality and detail at lowest patient exposure while ensuring

substantially increased diagnostic speed and confidence at highest temporal resolution, making it faster than Any Beating Heart. DSCT offers a paradigm shift in imaging diagnostics for

improved image quality and clinical capabilities – easier, faster, and better diagnoses.

From emergency to non-emergency cases and from bariatric to pediatric patients, the DSCT scanner can handle them with as low as reason-ably achievable X-ray and contrast dose. Industry’s highest routine isotropic resolution in

combination with the fastest sub-millimeter volume coverage of gives unmatched diagnostic images with DSCT.

More than 400 DSCTs are in clinical use worldwide, not only for daily clinical routines but also for cutting edge research, making it the preferred solution for both general and cardiac imaging.

In Pakistan, leading medical and cardiac institutions have shown their confidence on the World’s first DSCT hence

providing state of the art CT diagnostic facility to their patients. The systems are installed at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad;

Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology, Rawalpindi and National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Karachi.

Healthcare Real-time 3D Ultrasound in Just a Heartbeat

Siemens has developed the first ultrasound system in the world that can generate three-dimensional images of the heart

in real time during one single beat.

Such technology can set a new standard in echocardiographic imaging that will improve patient care. Doctors can analyze results and begin treatment more quickly with the new system. The first systems have been delivered recently.

The 3D ultrasound unit is equipped with new transducer technology that features cooling of the transducer, an unprec-edented development that allows it to operate at a higher performance level and to process information much more rapidly. The electronic engineering was co-developed by researchers from Corporate Technology. This, in turn, makes it possible for the first time to record a

complete image within a heartbeat. The new transducer is also smaller and lighter than conventional units.

Siemens Analyzer is a Strong Partner in the Lab

Siemens has developed a laboratory system for diagnostic tests that combines multiple methods of analysis, which

dramatically accelerates work flows. In one hour the system can analyze 200 samples and reliably determine 1,500 diagnostic values.

The multifunctional DIMENSION VISTA™ system can thus be used to conduct nearly all of a hospital’s laboratory tests.

In medical labs, time is of the essence. During peak periods, hundreds of blood or urine samples can arrive hourly at the laboratory of a large hospital. Each sample is tested to

determine an average of almost ten different values, which could indicate a wide variety of illnesses.

As a rule, a medical lab contains various pieces of equipment, and each is used to analyze only a small number of param-eters. The multifunctional DIMENSION VISTA™ analyzer developed by Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics, by contrast, combines four laboratory analysis techniques in one instru-ment. It can carry out 97 percent of the lab tests required in routine and emergency hospital situations, and its current version can simultaneously evaluate about 105 different parameters.

PET Scan of the Entire Body in Five Minutes

Siemens has introduced an imaging device that combines the functions of its most advanced computed tomo-graph (CT) with a high-resolution PET (positron emission tomography) system.

The new Biograph mCT thus combines all the capabilities of molecular imaging and radiology in a single piece of equipment.

It is the only system that offers PET images with a resolution of two millimeters and image contrast four times better than conventional PET imaging*. Now it’s possible to conduct a PET examination in only five minutes.

The CT’s X-ray source rotates around the patient three times a second, and its 128-slice imaging technology makes possible a resolution of 0.33 millimeter.

Realize that your words may carry more weight than you think, and that there is a difference between what you say and what is heard. Authority and position give your words extra clout. You know you're the same person the kids feel free to argue with, that you don't always have the answers, that sometimes you just think out loud, like most people. You don't see yourself as different, but you are. When

you take on the mantle of management, your words change in the ears and minds of employees. What may seem like a casual discussion to you often seems like a life and death dialogue to employees. They go home at night and tell their partners and families what an incredible, brilliant, awful, or rude thing you said. You may have just been testing the waters. Employee’s often mistake such explorations as official decrees. If you casually remark, "It would be nice to have a new cafeteria," you can be sure that, word will spread that the boss said we're getting a new cafeteria. As an exercise that will give you a sense of this, multiply the intensity of your words fivefold, and then mentally listen to your conversation again. Increasing Productivity: Avoid DistractionsScenario & Solution

The phone never stops ringing, the colleagues never stops interrupting or visiting your desk. If this is the workplace environment, then we may have a problem with distractions. Too many distractions can lead to a loss of productivity and an, increasing sense of frustration.

Increasing productivity in work can be easy if one learns to ORGANIZE, PRIORITIZE and FOCUS.

Few ways to cut short distractions are:1. List down and organize all your tasks.2. Prioritize your work load.3. Be focused on completing one task at a time.

OR

In case of a situation where multitasking is desired, keep focused on priority task first till it is released for further execution from your end.

AdvantageIf you get your job done well and on time and within budget you may be asked or called on to become involved with new assign-ments or projects. This will provide you with an opportunity to extend skills and most probably be consideration for promotion.

DangerIf you are not productive, you could be overlooked.

ConclusionProductivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commit-ment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort. (Paul J. Meyer) By

Siemens Outplay Standard Chartered Bank

Siemens Pakistan totally outclassed Standard Chartered Bank in a friendly cricket match. Batting first Siemens made 122 with Syed Waseem making 45 and Naveed Shehzad 27. In reply Standard Chartered could only put 113 runs on the board. Top scorers for Standard Chartered were Nabeel Butt 50 and Saadi 27.

Our Own SPL

Well folks, we have our own version of the IPL. Yes! a SPL and this is certainly more innovative than the IPL. This game is for the fast and furious only. Limited overs match that is so limited that once you are on

the crease you start firing from the word go because you do not have 50 or even 20 overs. You have just 10 overs and by the time you are through there is no strategy session required because the game is over as far as your side is concerned. This idea was conceived and successfully executed by me and I would like to share with you how it all happened.

I joined Siemens last year. As a sports enthusiast, I discovered Siemens employees were not much into sports because of the nature of their work and tight working schedule. I hold the opinion that one of the reasons for injecting young blood into any organi-zation is to reinvigorate the competi-tive spirit and provide a spurt of activity and energy. Therefore, through personal initiative, I took on the responsibility of organizing a cricket team and a full season of matches with other organizations in the region. My aim was two-fold. Firstly, introducing a sport like cricket would not only bring people from different BUs on one platform but also foster team work, social networking and cohesion. Secondly, it would provide us with the opportunity to reach out and network with people working in the corporate sector. Such relationships can pave the way for personal as well as professional cooperation, understanding and benefit. The formula I applied was simple. I wanted to ensure that our activity would prove entertaining and time efficient. Therefore, instead of having 50 over matches which presented the obvious issue of time commitment, I decided to have 10 over matches every Saturday. Emails were circulated, a trial match was held and a team roster was formed. The cricket team now plays

weekly cricket matches with organiza-tions such as Packages Pvt. Ltd., UBL, Standard Chartered Bank, Shell Pvt. Ltd. etc. Since inception, word of our weekly meets has become increasingly popular within and outside Siemens and we now have more teams willing to compete against us. Our future plans include formulation of a local cricket league and hopefully with time we will achieve that target also. What about the long term? Can’t afford Cheer Leaders so we will keep it to basic cricket and just enjoy an evening out with friends from within the company and outside.

Performance Management

Introduction:

Performance Manage-ment encompasses such activities which ensure that goals and targets of an organiza-tion are met in an effective and prolific way.

Therefore it is used to maximize the perfor-

mance by accountability and motivate the people to do their best to increase the profit of an organization. The sources of accountability include performance appraisals, evaluations, discussions and the results that come because of their efforts. Hence it can be said that performance measurement is a part of performance management.

What is Performance Management?

As mentioned earlier, Performance Management helps to meet the goals of an organization in an efficient manner. It emphasises on the idea of judging the employees on the basis of the outcome they produce. For this employees must be trained as to how they can develop themselves and what is expected from them so that they will be able to improve their work methods.

It is imperative to set goals, set a clear direction of work, and tell them how feedback is provided in order to have an effective Performance Management system. There should be a clear process of performance appraisal to check the development and growth of an employee which is purely based on the results produced not on their personalities.

Why Performance Management?

Performance Management eliminates the “Look busy, do nothing,” concept. The performance of the people depends only on their attitude towards work and the results they produce for the profit of organization. The employee may be considered as loyal to the organiza-tion if he keeps himself busy with the mundane tasks leaving an impression on others that he/she has a lot to do,

Performance Management eradicates this misconception.

An effective Performance Manage-ment system helps in setting of goals of an organization and the efficiency needed to achieve it. Therefore the activities of the employees ensure the parallelism of activities with the goals of that organization.

Performance Management helps in ensuring that it depersonalizes the issues. In this kind of management, goals are set and work is planned, perfor-mance and attitude towards work is measured by the supervisor, it is then accounted via performance appraisals or evaluation forms then the one with a high rating will be rewarded.

Therefore the whole judgment system will become unbiased differentiating the employees only on the basis of their performance rather than their personali-ties.

Accountability factor will motivate the employees to give their best and make positive use of the resources as much as possible.

Performance Management encour-ages communication between employee and supervisor via discussions and feedback.

Equitable treatment will be given to the employees irrespective of any favors so that he/she will not feel demotivated.

All the activities will be in alignment with the vision and mission of the particular organization.

Types of Performance Management:

There are several types of performance management depending on the area where this Performance Management approach is implemented:

1. Business Performance Management:

This type of Performance Management comprises of the methods that help in developing the efficient and effective use of manpower and available resources of the business units of an organization.

2. Operational Performance Management:

It refers to the discipline which focuses on the methods that help in improving the business performance among different organizations.

3. Application Performance Management:It is a set of processes that refers to supervision and maintenance of the software application used in an organiza-tion.

4. Project Performance Management:

It is related to performances related to a specific project i.e. performances regarding scope of project, available resources, time frame in which that project should be completed etc.

Value of Know-HowA giant ship engine failed. The ship's owners tried one expert after another, but none of them could figure out how to fix the engine.

Then they brought in an old man who had been fixing ships since he was young. He carried a large bag of tools with him, and when he arrived, he immediately went to work. He inspected the engine very carefully, top to bottom.

Two of the ship's owners were there, watching this man, hoping he would know what to do. After looking things over, the old man reached into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something. Instantly, the engine lurched into life. He carefully put his hammer away. The engine was fixed!

A week later, the owners received a bill from the old man for ten thousand dollars.

"What?!" the owners exclaimed. "He hardly did anything!"

So they wrote to the old man a note saying, "Please send us an itemized bill."

The man sent a bill that read:

Tapping with a hammer...... ......... ........ $ 2.00 Knowing where to tap.......... ......... ...... $ 9,998.00

Study Tours to Siemens PakistanAs part of our CSR activities the company spends considerable resources in arranging study tours for students of Engineer-ing Universities, Business colleges, Technical institutes, Technical institutes of the Armed Forces of Pakistan, Government and semi government organizations, Utilities and other organiza-tions from across the country. For the majority of these institutions these tours are mandatory

and part of their syllabus.

The tours are coordi-nated throughout the company with the delegates being greeted on shop floors by concerned technical persons to answer any query. Siemens imposing Industrial complex has four factories on its premises i.e. Motors, Transformers, Switchboards and Diesel Generating sets including the 220 kV Transformer factory the only one of its

kind in Pakistan that represents a great learning experience for the visitors.

These tours add value to the knowledge of the visitors giving them an opportunity to see practical application of the theories they are taught. Here are glimpses of the tours in the last few months. Most of the groups are photo-graphed with our visit coordinator Mr. Sohail Mehmood of CC.

Light for Life Screened for Various Audiences

Screening of Siemens Documentary “Light for Life” for various educational institutions, alternative energy confer-ences and seminars and government officials continues with great success. Everyone appreciates not only the dedicated service of Siemens but also the quality of the documentary. The documentary when shown to the task force preparing the road map for solar energy in the province evoked this

interesting response from Mr. Yasin Malik who said “ If you produce such good documentary you will close all film studios in the country”

The institutions where the documentary was released included the Solar Energy seminar at Usmania Institute organized by IEEEP Karachi chapter. A large number of students, faculty and dignitaries were present. It was greatly appreciated by all and enhanced our image considerably.

The documentary was also shown to a very large audience at Bahria University during their CSR seminar. Copies of our CSR report were also distributed to the audience and Director CC Mr. Zuberi briefly spoke outlining Siemens CSR activities. Other multinationals also

participated but our CSR report and the documentary really stole the show and the director and audience were very impressed by our well documented activities. A question and answer session was also held at the end.The Documentary was also shown at Goethe institute Karachi during a workshop on alternate energy. Top names from the alternate energy sector including concerned government officials were present on the occasion.

The documentary is also regularly shown to students from Engineering Universities and technical institutions including those associated with the technical branches of the armed forces of Pakistan during their visits to Siemens Industrial complex for their study tours.

A company wide campaign was launched to raise funds to help the family of the deceased truck driver, who had lost his life last year, in an accident in Kashmir, while he was taking materials for

Light for Life Phase II the Siemens Solar project for earthquake affected people of Azad Kashmir.

A total of two hundred and thirty five

thousand rupees were collected (Rs. 235.000). It was decided that instead of paying cash to his widow, we should arrange an investment for a permanent source of income for his family. The safest and the most convenient invest-ment was Behbood Saving Certificate.

Siemens employees delegation headed by Dr.Suhail Qureshi visited his village (in Haveli Lakhan, Distt. Okara) and paid Rs. 10,000 cash for immediate needs of the family. Behbood certificates could not be bought in the name of the

widow as she did not have an NIC number so she was asked to make an NIC card.

Once she made her NIC and the affidavit, confirming that she is widow the concerned employees visited National Saving Center in Haveli Lakhan and invested the remaining amount of Rs. 225,000 in Behbood Saving Certifi-cate in her name. Now she will be getting about Rs. 3,000 every month.

The 7th Pakistan Oil, Gas & Energy Exhibition( POGEE) was held recently at the Karachi expo centre. Siemens ITS joined the show, keeping in mind its product offering for turnkey IT solutions

and the expertise it has in the Oil & Gas sector. Being a complimentary product to the venue itself, Siemens ITS not only entertained the corporate, but also students and regular citizens, who were keen to change their careers and jump on board the SAP team of professionals in Pakistan.

Worth mentioning, is the key role played by the ITS marketing team who had prepared the kiosk in an eye catching manner. Also, by inviting consultants from various modules each day, they

ensured that every one got their due share to represent Siemens at this corporate extravaganza.

First address to the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan

“One of the biggest curses from which India is suffering .....- I do not say that the other countries are free from it, but I think our condition is much worse – is bribery and corruption. That really is a poison. We must put that down with an iron hand and I hope that you will take adequate measures……”Quaid-e-Azam M. Ali Jinnah founder of Pakistan.

ComplianceRoadshow

Chief Compliance Officer of Siemens AG Dr. Andreas Pohlmann and Compliance Coordinator of Asia Pacific region Mr. Frank Schmidt visited Siemens Pakistan on February 19, 2009 to conduct Compliance road show with senior management, heads of business units and corporate departments, where they spoke of Siemens achievements as well as challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Siemens.

In particular Siemens Pakistan compli-ance performance and achievements in 2007-08 were highly appreciated.

Highlights from the roadshow are as follows:

A painful chapter is now closed and a resolution is reached with German and US authorities last year; which is considered to be significant achieve-ment of compliance program. Authorities have appointed Mr. Theo Wagel (Ex German Finance Minister) as compliance monitor to oversee compli-ance program and activities indepen-dently. Compliance program has been successfully implemented globally and strengthened compliance organization plays a vital role to avoid systematic deficiencies, failures and misconducts. Siemens has a best in class compli-ance program and on this basis has started to fight corruption with “Collec-tive Action”. Siemens is now an official member of the Partnering Against Corruption Initiative (PACI) of the World Economic

Forum (WEF). PACI brings together over 140 major companies from around the world to support the fight against supplier-side corruption in the private sector through joint activities. It is critical that both - leadership and employees - move from a rules based culture to value based approach towards compliance. Rules and regula-tions have their own importance but developing a culture of highest values and ethics is a key to success. Simplifying rules and regulations is one of the most important requests that we were able to glean from the results of the compliance perception survey. New gifts and hospitality guidelines is first step towards it.

Chief Compliance Officer and Compli-ance Global Coordinator also visited factory premises of Siemens Pakistan accompanied by Chief Executive Officer Mr. Sohail Wajahat H. Siddiqui.

Information Security ForumCorporate Information Technology is

developing a propri-etary web-based learning portal for users that prefer a Web-based Training for Information

Security Awareness. The content of the forum will be customized to show Information Security issues. This method of delivery would leverage significant cost savings, and allow users to train at their own convenience.

Information Security WebsiteCorporate Information Technology maintains a comprehensive webpage on Information Security. The content of the website comprises of the following:

Policies and Guidelines to protect you from internal and external threats IS Training material such as self- training programs Checklists to ensure that you are following the program correctly Videos of real-world threats Presentations Handouts/ Flyers, and Latest News

In future, we will be developing an online Information Security incident reporting portal, which will also be available on the website.

Your Local IS Rules

The protection of sensitive information is important and all employees are required to give it due importance. By protecting yourself and the systems entrusted to you,

you are protecting your co-workers, Siemens network and data and, ultimately,

the customers who are depending on you. With the increasing volume and complexity of cyber security threats, we must be aware of how to

protect ourselves and the information in our care. There might be several situations in which we put our knowl-edge at risk. It is essential to be aware of these risks and to avoid them as far as possible.

Dangerous SituationOne of the fastest ways to compromise

a system is to simply walk up to an unattended workstation and access the system. E-mail access,

confidential records and personal files can be easily compromised. Users should remain cautious and must lock their workstations or shut down completely to avoid misuse of their systems.

Email Caution E-mail messaging is a wonderful tool but it can be used in a number of ways. Phishing, for example, is a fraudulent attempt made through E-mail, to steal your personal information. Employees must ignore such emails – otherwise they will lose vital information stored on their hard disks. Employees using Corina Remote Access Solution, or whose PCs are not linked to the Corporate Intranet have to take added precaution.

Computer viruses – What can you do?Your system can be exposed to spyware,

viruses or a Trojan horse sometimes just by clicking on a link and visiting a malicious site. Our department works to ensure that Siemens’ virus

protection programs are up-to-date. Every two to three days the entire intranet automatically updates itself with virus protection applications. In case of concern about such a threat, contact Corporate Information Technol-ogy immediately on Ext: 2073.

Making your contribution to Information Security

Awareness is crucial to avoid risks. Just by being aware of security issues at your workplace you can make an immense contribu-tion towards

Information Security.

Spreading Information Security Awareness

The most valuable assets of any organization are its people, information, operations and systems. Companies face threats to these assets everyday in the form of computer viruses, network attacks, fraud, industrial espio-nage, and even natural

disasters. Protecting the safety, confidentiality, integrity and availability of these assets is essential to maintain-ing profitability, compliance, public image and a competitive edge.

The increasing digitization of everyday life and stronger measures for protect-ing sensitive corporate data has generated an enormous demand for Information Security solutions and services. “The market for security technologies overall has grown. Use of new material and security mechanisms,

as well as development of innovative application scenarios for modern high-security technolo-gies, must guarantee improved protection,” says Ulrich Hamann, CEO of Bundesdruckerei GmbH, in

assessing Information Security growth.

Demand for adequate protection of the IT Infrastructure has increased tremen-dously at Siemens Pakistan. This is a result, in part, of Corporate Information Technology’s continuous awareness of

the risks of unwanted intrusions, data manipulation and distribution of malicious software. The imple-mentation and compli-ance of Information Security rules will be successful when all

persons are acquainted with the required measures. Hence, developing a Security Awareness Program has been constructive in effectively implementing the measures needed to keep your data safe and secure. Information Security Awareness provides the greatest return on investment and has had the greatest positive impact on Siemens.

Be Aware, Be Secure

The motto of our campaign is “Be Aware, Be Secure.” The aim is to raise

employees’ awareness and change their habits. After all, how effective can measures such as building security, encryption programs and firewalls be, if employees are not conscious of

Information Security in all that they do. Information Security is considered to be of supreme importance.

To ensure the highest level of data security, as well as seamless operations at Siemens, Corporate Information Technology is effectively educating the users to equip them with the required Information Security knowledge in order to make Information Security successful throughout the company.

Information Security Awareness program leverages a vast store of content and training delivery methods to provide users with an unparalleled security awareness program. The program comprises of the following components:

Training Material Instructor led Information Security Awareness training sessions. Information Security Forum – Interactive, self-paced, web-based training. Customized awareness collateral including posters, flyers, brochures, etc. Information Security Videos. Information Security Manual/ Guide lines.

Training SessionsThere is no better method of security awareness knowledge transfer than an Instructor-led Information Security Awareness Session. With attention grabbing topics such as phishing scams, email security, Corporate Information

Technology ensures that our instructors have the best content and course to present.

Couple this with videos of real-world threats and vulnerabilities; Informa-tion Security training

sessions are able to provide users with vital information about concrete remediation steps.

Siemens Wins MAP Award for Corporate Excellence

Siemens Egypt has launched an Internal Energy Saving Campaign carrying the slogan: "Lead the Change… Save Energy".

The objective of this campaign was: to create awareness among Siemens employees about the need to save energy, to reduce energy consumption and the electricity bill by 10%, raise awareness about Siemens Environmen-tal Portfolio, to build a positive corpo-rate image towards our customers and to the public in general, and finally to become a Green Building.

The campaign was launched with an “Energy Saving Day” on Thursday June 18th, 2009 within Siemens Egypt premises and in the presence of Mr. Mohamed El-Mahdi − Chairman & Managing Director − who presented a speech at the staff cafeteria to encour-age the employees about the impor-tance of Energy Saving and talked about

the huge Siemens Environmental Portfolio. “Energy Saving Ambassadors“ − from across different business units and

corporates − have participated in organizing as well as preparing and arranging the event. On the Energy Saving Day, the employees were greeted at the entrance with chocolate bars carrying the campaign slogan and they came to work wearing the campaign T-Shirts.

They showed their cooperation and support for the campaign, as they used the stairs instead of the elevators and switched off the unused lights all over the building to save energy.

Posters and flyers were displayed all over the building carrying several messages on how to save energy. In addition, stickers for closing the doors and switching off the lights, computers,

printers, .. etc. carried the messages: “Close the Door” and “Switch Me Off”.

Siemens believes that the best way to ensure that our planet stays green isn't only by recycling and conserving energy, but also by teaching our

children to do the same. With this concept, Siemens distributed to its employees activity booklets for their kids on energy and energy saving. Moreover, Siemens Egypt has dedicated a section on its Energy Saving page on the Intranet under the name “Junior Energy Savers” that includes many activity sheets (ready for downloading) that can assist employees in teaching their children about energy saving in a fun and interactive way.

Green balloons and green plants were decorating the cafeteria to strengthen the message of green environment and green building. In addition, an energy saving cartoon (movie) was played on the LCD screen in the cafeteria.

Energy Saving Ambassadors interviewed employees and asked questions about energy and energy saving.

By the end of the day, Mr. El-Mahdi announced the winners of the energy saving quiz and handed the prizes in a friendly atmosphere filled with an interactive team spirit. The employees were gathered for group photos at the reception area.

Siemens Egypt I IA/DT wins the complete electrical and automation packages for “Nile Sugar”.“Nile Sugar”, a subsidiary of “Orascom”, is the first fully private beet sugar company in Egypt. Its production capacity is 125000 tons/year in the present phase and is expandable up to 250000 tons/year. The project is intended to produce high quality white

sugar, which is mainly for export. The first package won was the automation and instrumentation after a fierce competition from several well-known manufacturers. The project was acquired on technical basis due to the reputable experience that Siemens possesses in the Sugar industry as well as the availability of a local commissioning and after sales service setup. Siemens S.A.E.

was a consortium partner with Siemens AG covering the local commissioning. In April 2009, Siemens S.A.E. was awarded the contracts for the supply of Sinamics Drives and Motor Control Centers (MCC’s). The MCC’s are executed through Siemens local Sivacon partner “EMAS”. “Nile Sugar” will start commis-sioning in October 2009 and the production is planned in March 2010.

The project stands as a mile stone not only for the increase in local added value in Sugar projects, but also due to the collaboration between the head office and the local regional companies.

Siemens Egypt is moving to “SPIRI-DON” - “SAP”Siemens Egypt is currently preparing to move to “SPIRIDON” – “SAP”. During a

preparation and follow up meeting of SPIRIDON - SAP implementation, Mr. El-Mahdi − Chairman & Managing Director − stated that there are two major factors “manpower and tools”, which lead to the success of the business in any organization. According to Mr. El-Mahdi: “Siemens has excellent employees and we need to improve our tools. For that reason, we decided to move our ERP system from “Globe” to “SAP”, which is the world and the Siemens standard. Moving to “SAP” is not only a challenge, but is also going to mark a new era for our organization”.Both our employees and this tool will enable us to drive the business faster and more efficient. With SPIRIDON, we have to change; we have to adjust our processes to get the best benefit out of it for Siemens. Why moving to “SPIRIDON” – “SAP”? For the past few years, Siemens S.A.E. had exceeded the “Globe” capabilities (average usage at globe = 15 emp. /country). The ability to meet new business requirements. Aligning with the countries from the Middle East Cluster. Efficiency in consolidating reports.

Solmssen Conducts Town Hall Meeting in Qatar

Peter Solmssen, member of the Manag-ing Board, General Counsel of Siemens AG and head of Corporate Legal and Compliance made his first visit to Qatar this quarter. He also addressed the second Siemens Town Hall Meeting in the country.

Around 80 employees from the regional company of Siemens WLL, Siemens Healthcare and Siemens AG project offices in the country attended the meeting.

Opening the afternoon meeting, Wolfgang Muth, CEO of Siemens WLL, provided a brief overview of the business climate in Qatar. He pointed out that the Middle East and Qatar are one of the least affected areas, but at the same time, there were serious challenges and increased competition to face in the markets where Siemens operates.

Solmssen took the stage shortly afterwards and spoke highly of the impressive growth that he had observed in Qatar. He outlined the results of the second financial quarter at Siemens AG and commended the satisfactory performance of the Middle East Cluster. He highlighted the major role that the Middle East region plays in the company’s global scenario. “In this time of crisis,

Siemens needs the economic strength of the Middle East more than ever,” he said. Solmssen also provided updates for a variety of key company topics includ-ing compliance initiatives, the S,G&A programme and Siemens’ organisational structure.

A Q&A session at the event gave employees the change to put forth their questions to Solmssen and Muth.

To a question about Siemens’ strategy to face the crisis, Solmssen said, “We hold strongly to our principles of best service and best technology” he said, “Lowering margins is not the answer and I don’t think this would necessarily help us win projects, as we cannot build things with inadequate margins”.

In response to another question, Solmssen endorsed the success of the Siemens One approach and stressed on its relevance in a company with a portfolio as diverse as Siemens. He also highlighted the fact that the strength of Siemens is in its country managers.

“The country CEO is the face of Siemens and this is where Siemens has a real competitive value,” he said.

Siemens’ strong global commitment towards supporting scientific education is visible in the region too. The company recently signed two Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) contracts with the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) in the UAE.

The first MoU was signed between both parties in March. As a result, business leaders in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region will now be able to enhance their leadership skills through a new senior leadership course that Siemens and the HCT are introducing in the region.

The HCT and Siemens will offer state-of-the-art leadership development based on the Siemens Leadership Excellence courses.

Siemens is responsible for designing and

delivering the course curriculum, while the HCT will provide the logistical and technical support for the program in the region.

In addition to the leadership course, students of the HCT, Dubai Men’s College (DMC) will soon have highly specialised engineering technology available at their finger-tips. In line with the second MoU, signed in June, Siemens will equip a high-tech labora-tory in the HCT Centre of Engineering Excellence on the DMC premises with the very latest in engineering equip-ment.

The laboratory is expected to be functional by November 2009. Siemens will also be responsible for providing the engineering laboratory with the learning resources for automation and drive technologies.

“Siemens already has an extensive alliance with HCT, and this partnership takes us toanother level. We will be facilitating learning by adapting and extending professional skills and knowledge to the future of tomorrow. We are pleased to be involved in shaping this country’s future engineers”, said Joachim Kundt, CEO, Siemens LLC.

The HCT is a distinguished educational institution in the UAE dedicated to developing the national workforce of the country.

Siemens and the HCT have had a long association. Siemens actively supports HCT with internship opportunities in its expansive business areas. Siemens also participates in the various industry related conferences organised by the Higher Colleges.

Precautions against Flu Pandemic

As the world is preparing for a looming Flu pandemic, it is important for us to know some of the measures that we

can individually take to protect ourselves from this disease. It is also important to understand that to develop an effective and safe

vaccine is time-consuming process and such a vaccine may not be readily available esp. in third-world countries so we must rely on and adhere to personal protective measures.

Avoid crowds (events, cafeterias, clubs, stores, cinemas, theaters, etc.). Avoid enclosed premises (lifts, conference rooms, etc.). Avoid close physical contact (influenza can only be transmitted within a distance of 1.2 meters). Do not shake hands when greeting someone. Always wash your hands thoroughly after contact and

before eating. When coughing or sneezing use linen to cover face and mouth. Use disposable handkerchiefs, and make sure they are disposed of safely (preferably in sealable bags or other suitable containers). Postpone any non-urgent visits to the doctor. Ensure rooms are thoroughly venti lated.

The following personal measures may also be necessary:

Wear breathing masks (closely fitting mouth-nose protection), esp. when going outdoors. Avoid contact with sick people as far as possible. When such contact is unavoidable (e.g. within the family), comply strictly with the requisite protective measures (such as wearing face masks, or disinfecting your hands frequently). Make greater use of home workstations. Avoid using public transport. If there is any suspicion that you have been infected, do not go to work, but consult your doctor immediately (if necessary, initially only by telephone).

Use of buildings / facilities

The use of lifts should be restricted. (They should only be used by disabled people and in special cases.) Provide hand disinfectant in wash rooms and toilets. Clean door handles frequently with disinfectant. Close canteens.

Conferences and meetings

Conferences and meetings must be kept to a minimum. When necessary, the relevant protective measures for

personal and building facilities must be taken. Preference must be given to alterna-tives (Net meeting, etc.).

Power and Water for the United Arab Emirates

Siemens Energy has secured an order from Abu Dhabi for construction of the

Shuweihat II combined cycle power plant with integrated seawater desalination facility. The company will build the plant as a turnkey project

together with the partners Doosan Heavy Industries and Samsung Engineering & Construction approxi-mately 200 kilometers west of Abu Dhabi. After the scheduled start of operation in September 2011, the plant will generate 1500 megawatts of electricity net and feed approximately 455,000 cubic meters of water daily into the local drinking water network. Project developer is GDF Suez. End customer is the local energy provider Abu Dhabi Electricity & Water Authority (ADWEA). The value of the order for Siemens is more than EUR350 million.

Siemens continues to invest in wind energy R&D to reduce investment risks and improve project econom-ics for wind farm owners and operators

Siemens Energy has entered into a cooperative research and development

agreement (CRADA) with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) to conduct atmospheric modeling research that is expected to help

operators and owners operate wind farms more efficiently, while providing more power to power grids. Under the CRADA that will span two years, Livermore will provide high-resolution, numerical weather prediction models to forecast power generated by the wind. Siemens will translate Livermore’s forecasts of wind speed and wind direction at each turbine into power collected.

“Accurate and timely forecasts of power availability will enable turbine owners and operators to generate optimal bids on wind turbine production and,

in turn, maximize both financial benefit and grid support,” said Henrik Stiesdal, Chief Technology Officer of Siemens Wind Power. “More accurate predictions also could reduce the investment risks in wind-powered projects and could improve the design of tall wind turbines to withstand the high-turbulence environment higher in the atmosphere.”

Siemens receives first wind power order from Turkey

Siemens has received a turnkey order for the supply of 13 of the new SWT-2.3-101 wind turbines from EnerjiSA

Power Generating Company. The machines will be installed in the Çanakkale-Mahmudiye wind farm in the North Western part of Turkey. The contract covers the

delivery, installation, commissioning of the turbines and part of the civil works. Furthermore, a 12 year service and maintenance contract has been signed. The installation of the wind turbines is scheduled to be finalized in 2010.

Airtricity secures Siemens wind turbines for the Butendiek offshore wind farm in Germany

Airtricity, the renewable energy division of Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), signed an agreement with Siemens

Energy for the delivery of 80 SWT-3.6-107 wind turbines for the Butendiek offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. The offshore project, with a capacity of 288 megawatts

(MW), shall be commissioned in 2012.

The Butendiek project is located 34 kilometers off the island of Sylt at a water depth of 20 meters. “The Butend-iek project enjoys one of the best

conditions among the German offshore projects,” says Martin Huss, Project

Director and General Manager at Butendiek Offshore Windpark GmbH & Co. KG., the project company for the offshore wind farm.

Airtricity acquired the Butendiek project from the community founded developer OSB Butendiek in 20

Siemens to build wind turbine production facility in the U.S.

Siemens intends to build a new produc-tion facility for wind turbines in the state of Kansas. Initially, 400 new jobs

are expected to be created in the new wind turbine production facility in Hutchinson, Kansas. When

production begins at this facility, Siemens will be able to even more effectively meet the strong demand for wind turbine equipment in North and South America in the future.

Construction of the 300,000-square-foot nacelle production facility is scheduled to begin in August 2009. A nacelle is mounted on top of the tower and supports the rotor. It houses a wind turbine’s major components for electric power generation, including the gearbox, the drive train and the control electronics.

The nacelles to be produced in Kansas will weigh 90 tons and the first nacelle

is expected to be shipped in December 2010. All nacelles produced in Hutchinson will be used in the company’s reliable 2.3-MW wind turbine product family. Initially,

the factory’s planned annual output is approximately 650 nacelles – or 1,500 megawatts (MW).
