A 2MW PV array = 1,400 tons of avoided CO2 annuallyThat’s equivalent to removing 250 cars from the road, and why we installed our Sacramento, CA PV array, which produces 80% of our facility’s annual power needs.

Sustainability is the driving force behind the technologies we provide for both the world and for ourselves. We work towards sustainability using a holistic approach that encompasses our products and our people—whether it be regarding the environment, health, economics or society, our sustainability-based principles lay the foundation for our leadership today and for the future.

We established the Sustainability Office and Sustainability Council to manage our activities efficiently

We conduct facility-wide energy audits to uncover opportunities for energy use reduction

To further reduce usage we’ve completed lighting retrofits, deploying energy-efficient lighting, and installing occupancy and daylight sensors

Continuous improvements include LEED design and certification for all new office and manufacturing facilities, renovations of existing buildings, and updates to commercial office interiors

Sustainability Starts With Us

1 idea = 13,000 lbs in avoided waste annuallyWe regularly implement solutions—from entire building system overhauls to local, employee-led initiatives—at our 800 U.S. locations.

To support efforts for continuous improvement, Sharon Spina and her team held a meeting to discuss productivity and ways to save money and reduce waste. “I had just seen a television program and they were talking about how pigs eat everything,” said the Senior Administrative Assistant, “So I mentioned that we should find pigs that would eat our leftover food so we wouldn't have to throw it away.” Now, Siemens employees in Flanders, NJ support the Feed the Pigs program by recycling food scraps that would otherwise be thrown in the trash.

The Pig Can: a bin in the Flanders cafeteria where staff and employees recycle ~50 pounds of food scraps each day

A local farmer collects the scraps to feed the pigs on his farm

Food scrap recycling = less waste = decreased waste disposal costs = smaller environmental footprint

#1 provider of water treatment systems in the U.S.For us, every drop counts. Our products and services are designed to keep water clean, which keeps cities safe and companies profitable.

Siemens partnered with Chesapeake Bay communities to address water quality concerns related to non-point source pollution (run-off) from upland populations

Our team developed an enhanced nutrient-removal orbital system for Havre de Grace Wastewater Treatment Plant and five other treatment plants in Maryland

The upgraded Havre de Grace plant can handle 3.3 million gallons—increased from 1.9 million gallons—enabling future growth in the community

Sustaining Life: Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay

Casey Whittier, a Product Manager for Siemens Water Technologies, knew that the people of Maryland should be concerned about sustaining the largest estuary in the United States, the Chesapeake Bay. His vision of enhanced systems for local water treatment facilities answered their challenge of bringing life back to the water and to their communities.

The Green City Index ranks 27 U.S. & Candadian cities By 2050, 90% of Americans will live in cities. This Siemens-sponsored report evaluates cities, based on nine categories, to inspire innovation worldwide.

With the populations of our cities on the rise—82% of Americans currently reside in cities—municipalities are faced with increasing challenges in sustainability. Through the U.S. and Canada Green City Index, cities are comprehensively evaluated, ranked, and scored; and the report provides city leaders with quantitative and qualitative groundwork to make improvements and with real-world city project examples to inspire best practice replications and expand innovations. Siemens has sponsored and developed Green City Indices for Europe, Latin America, Asia, Germany, and Africa, in addition to the U.S. and Canada, in partnership with the Economist Intelligence Unit.

#1 provider of light rail vehicles in North AmericaSiemens is delivering 55 light rail vehicles for Denver’s new 119-mile system to meet the city’s expanding population needs.

Siemens has been building electric trams and light rail transits for over 125 years—today our light rail vehicles can be used for fast inner city service and as regional rail, linking both city and surrounding areas

FasTracks commuter rail lines in Denver are planned to cover a combined length of 119 miles, providing commuters an alternative to congested roads and highways

We provide innovative rail technologies—like energy storage management systems—which help cut greenhouse gas emissions significantly

Our solutions include traction electrification, propulsion systems, rail automation, rolling stock and integrated services for light rail, heavy rail, commuter rail and locomotives

Innovating Transport: Denver Sustains Its Miles

Our high voltage solutions can increase capacity up to 24%San Francisco has implemented the first high voltage direct current (HVDC) PLUS System in the world to transmit energy directly to city businesses and residences.

Sustaining Energy: San Francisco’s Submarine Solution

With demands for electricity ever-increasing, and real estate in short supply—San Francisco is just 49 square miles—the city needed a efficient, reliable, secure and economic energy transmission solution. We developed a 53-mile undersea high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link between San Francisco's City Center electrical power grid and a Pacific Gas & Electric substation to sustain the needs of its 820,000 (and counting) residents.

Siemens high voltage direct current solutions efficiently transport energy from reserves far away and decrease transmission grid congestion in San Francisco’s East Bay

The city benefits from the HVDC PLUS solution through an increase in overall energy security, enhanced performance of the transmission grid, improved reliability, minimal environmental impact and reduced maintenance requirements

Access to renewable energy sources via HVDC PLUS also helps lower energy costs for consumers

In Houston, we upgraded over 10,000 standard vehicle and pedestrian signals to LED technology, reducing annual energy and maintenance costs for the city.

Siemens LED traffic signals use up to 90% less energy

Houston is working to be a role model and its city officials are pioneering programs to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy, and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Siemens is helping Houston—a C40/Clinton Climate Initiative partner city—to optimize and modernize systems throughout the city.

To increase city sustainability, Houston is:

Expanding their urban rail network to cover over 39 miles

Using rapid-transit trains, which include 19 new Siemens light-rail cars

Analyzing some 5,500,000 square feet at 271 city facilities with Siemens for

energy and water preservation opportunities

Retrofitting interior lighting with Siemens to decrease electricity usage by

almost 5,320,000 kWh annually

Sourcing more of its electricity from renewable technologies, including

Siemens wind turbine generators and solar energy solutions
