Offering high-quality care and innovative technology enables Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital to consistently achieve outstanding outcomes for its surgical

patients. For the seventh straight year, HealthGrades®, the leading independent healthcare ratings company, has awarded the hospital its Excellence Award™ for General Surgery. In addition, HealthGrades recently named Memorial Hermann Southwest as a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™, placing it in the top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide for superior clinical performance.

This exceptional care is accompanied by a diversity of procedures not usually available outside major medical centers. Affiliated surgeons skillfully use advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic technologies to perform hundreds of minimally invasive procedures each year. Among the procedures are removal of the gallbladder, appendix, bowel, adrenal gland, kidney, prostate, lung and uterus; repair of hernias and the valve between the esophagus and stomach; and improved diagnosis for pelvic pain or infertility.

Robotic surgery continues to provide surgical advancements

Major innovations in laparoscopic surgeries at Memorial Hermann Southwest are possible thanks to the da Vinci® robotic surgical system. Physicians praise its crystal-clear, 3-D imagery

and revolutionary motion control that precisely translates their hand, wrist and finger movements at the control console into corresponding micro-movements at instrument tips.

For patients, the robot-assisted surgery means smaller incisions, less blood loss and faster recoveries. This innovative technology has also led to single-incision procedures for a variety of surgeries, including cholecystectomy, or gallbladder removal. Memorial

A D V E R T O R I A L

Hermann Southwest was the first hospital in the Houston area, outside of the Texas Medical Center, to offer this procedure.

One of the first surgeons in Houston to perform a single-incision gallbladder removal with da Vinci was Michael H. Kleinman, M.D., a general surgeon affiliated with Memorial Hermann Southwest. He said the robotic-assisted technology aids surgeons in making delicate maneuvers and reduces the technical challenges of traditional laparoscopic gallbladder removal, while offering patients a cosmetic advantage.

“About 40 percent of patients undergoing gallbladder removal are women ages 18 to 44, and avoiding a scar can be important to them,” said Dr. Kleinman. “The surgeon needs only one incision on the navel about an inch long compared with four to six incisions for a traditional minimally invasive procedure.”

The best candidates for single-incision, robot-assisted gallbladder removal are patients whose gallbladder disease is caused by gallstones. Other criteria include being infection-free and having no history of previous upper abdominal surgeries.

New technology during endoscopy improves diagnoses of precancerous cells caused by heartburn

Several laparoscopic procedures performed by Memorial Hermann Southwest-affiliated physicians can treat heartburn and severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The longer someone has GERD, the higher the risk of developing cancer of the esophagus. An upper endoscopy is the standard of care to detect precancerous cells.

Performed under sedation, an upper endoscopy typically involves the use of a small forceps passed down an endoscope. The endoscope is a thin, flexible tube inserted into the body that allows surgeons to view the lining of the esophagus and stomach on a TV monitor.

Now the hospital’s surgical team has access to EndoCx®, which utilizes a specially designed biopsy brush to obtain a larger tissue sample of the esophagus than is available during a standard upper endoscopy. Studies show this promising new technology, when added to the standard endoscopy procedure, improves detection of precancerous cells in the esophagus by over 40 percent.

“Someone with persistent heartburn who has had an upper endoscopy where no precancerous cells were found using the standard biopsy technique should consider the EndoCx technology,” said Owen Maat, M.D., a gastroenterologist affiliated with Memorial Hermann Southwest. “This new 3-D brush biopsy technique increases the tissue area sampled and, therefore, increases the potential of discovering abnormal cells missed by the standard forceps biopsy procedure.”

Heartburn Hotline provides immediate help

Approximately 375,000 people in the Houston area suffer from chronic heartburn. The Heartburn and Reflux Treatment Program at Memorial Hermann Southwest offers specialty care from a multidisciplinary team of affiliated healthcare professionals who offer a wide range of treatment options from nutritional counseling to the latest surgical innovations. To connect with a heartburn specialist, call the Heartburn Hotline at 713.456.HBRN (4276).

What is the best medication to treat headache?

Treatment of migraine headache is categorized in two groups: acute

treatment and preventive treatment.Acute treatment: At the onset of the headache, if taken in time, most pain relievers such as over the counter Aspirin, Acetaminophen and anti- inflammatory medications ( ibuprofen or naproxen) can abort migraine headaches. Pain relievers are also available in combination with caffeine to increase anti- migraine effect. Taking these medications more than twice a week, can lead to rebound or chronic daily headaches.

If pain relievers fail to control your headache, your physician might recommend medications that are more migraine –specific such as Triptans. Some of the brand names in this category are: Imitrex, Zomig, Maxalt, Relpax, Axert or Frova. These medications are relatively expensive and most health insurance plans do not cover the cost of more than 6-10 tablets per month. Triptans should not be taken by pregnant women, or individuals with uncontrolled high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, severe kidney and liver disease.

Preventive treatment: people with frequent migraine headaches, may benefit from preventive treatment. Low dose anti-depressants, anti- seizure medications, and blood pressure medications from the family of beta blockers and calcium channel blockers are often used to reduce the frequency of migraine headaches.

Avoiding migraine triggers can reduce the frequency of the headaches. Keeping a “headache diary” helps you identify these triggers. Some common headache triggers include: fatigue, stress, too little or too much sleep, skipping meals, certain odors, menstrual cycles and certain foods. Intake of foods or drinks containing tyramine, aspartate, glutamate and nitrate has been linked to the development of headaches.

Consult your physician if you experience a sudden onset, a severe headache, fever or neck stiffness or new onset seizure. Other considerations to consult with your physician include: change in the personality, confusion, fainting, vision changes, weakness, numbness, recent head injury, awakening at nights by the headache or simply any headache that does not go away with the pain reliever or migraine specific medications.

When Jenifer Gwin thinks back on her early education at the Towne Creek School, it’s not the phonics lessons or the letter recognition activities she recalls, it’s the emotional connections she made with the teachers and the staff.

“I have so many fond memories of growing up at the Towne Creek School,” said Gwin. “I made friends I still have today and stayed in contact with the staff over the years. When it was time to send my daughter to school, I never gave it a second thought! I wouldn’t have trusted anyone to teach my child more than Towne Creek.”

Gwin is not the only student turned parent sending her child to the Towne Creek School. The school, which currently has 180 students, is full of families that have attended or worked there, often both, for multiple generations.

“Growing up at Towne Creek was a wonderful experience,” said Sara Diombala-Sanchez. “When my son was in Pre-K, he constantly amazed me by sharing information he learned at school. As a first grade FBISD teacher, I know how important small class sizes are in building rich teacher/student relationships. I truly believe it is these relationships, combined with

the school’s excellent learning curriculum that helped my son be successful in the public school setting.”

Creating an Environment Where The Whole Child Thrives

When I founded the Towne Creek School in 1983, my goal was to provide a place where children thrive in all developmental areas, where each one grows and develops as a whole child – socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively.

“Since the beginning, we’ve placed an emphasis on creating an environment where our student’s intellect is challenged while his/her creativity is tapped,” said Feinstein. The children need to be active participants in the learning process - engaged, involved in hands-on activities as much as

possible.”My non-

b u s i n e s s b a ckg round may be the fortuitous key to the school’s 30-year success. P r i o r t o founding the

Towne Creek School, I was a high school French and Spanish teacher. My only experience was the education world and thus I focused on what I knew, teaching.

I set out to find the very best teachers– ones that

would engage the students and create open dialogue with the parents. We can never underestimate the value of teachers. When I think back about the teachers who made the most difference in my life, they are undoubtedly the ones who made me feel truly cared for. I wanted to be the best student I could be for those teachers. I want each of our students, regardless of age, to experience that.

The staff, excellent teachers and dedicated administrators, at Towne Creek school are amazing. Many have been with the school for 10 to 20

“Growing up at Towne Creek was a wonderful experience! I left with fond memories and lifelong friendships. When my son was in Pre-K, he constantly amazed me by sharing information he learned at school. The small class sizes allow the teachers to build rich relationships with each child and his/her family. Students leave with the skills necessary to be successful in the public school setting.Sara D., former student, parent, and First Grade FBISD teacher

“When I walked back into Towne Creek after attending as a child myself, I immediately felt at home. This is a one of a kind, warm atmosphere where I am happy to send my kids to learn and play. They have both progressed extremely well. I attribute their scholastic and social success to the warm and caring teachers at Towne Creek”. - Stefani F., former student and Towne Creek parent for 7 years

“Watching my children walk the same hallways I walked and sit in the same classrooms I sat in as a student here is an indescribable feeling. Towne Creek has always been and always will be home for me.”-Kristen F.

End-of-Course STAAR assessments not 15% of final grade

On January 22, 2013, the FBISD Board of Trustees approved the District resolution to suspend the legal requirement to count the end-of-course (EOC) STAAR assessments as 15% of a student’s final grade

in the course for the 2012-13 school year. This change is possible because of a recent

ruling from the Texas Commissioner of Education to allow school districts to defer the 15% requirement. Therefore, the EOC assessments will NOT count as 15% of your child’s final grade for this year. Note: This change involves freshman and sophomore students taking EOC assessments. Current juniors and seniors remain under TAKS assessment requirements, not EOC.

For the 2012-13 school year, grade points will be awarded on semester grades. However, if the final average of a yearlong course would award the student higher grade points than the total of the two semester grades, then the final average will be used to award grade points.

Whole-course credit will be awarded if the average of the two semester grades equals at least 70. If one semester is passed and the other failed, and the average of those semesters is less than 70, credit will be awarded for the passed semester only.

years. Their commitment to our children, families and the school astounds me.

It’s incredibly gratifying to watch a former student that has become a contributing member to society reconnect with one of our

teachers or administrators, but now in the role as the parent. There’s nothing much more rewarding than that.■
