THURSDAY, AUGUST 11- 20, 2016 ANGELES CHAPTER, OCSS C/O: Iceland: Explore an Extraordinary Island II: Join us on a 10-day exploration to the land

of Vikings, Fire and Ice. We will visit Reykjavik in the southwest, Akureyri and the Lake

Myvatn area in north, then circle the island on the Ring road along Eastern Fjords and

southwest through remote and supremely scenic parts along the majestic glaciers flowing

from the Vatnajokull icecap. View floating icebergs in the Glacier Lagoon Jokulsarion.

Along the way we will dine in local restaurants and country farms, hike and explore towering

cliffs, remote fjords, majestic waterfalls, volcanic craters, geysers, boiling mud pits, and

more. South of Reykjavik, we take a relaxing swim in the cobalt colored water of the world

famous Blue Lagoon. Sierra Club Member cost $2,950, Non member cost $3,050 (payable

Sierra Club) includes hotel accommodations (dbl. occup), private charter transport, Icelandic

Liability Waivers In order to participate in a Sierra Club outing, you must sign a liability waiver. If you would

like to read a copy of the waiver before attending the outing, please see http://www.sierraclub.org/outings/chapter/forms/

California Seller of Travel CST #2087766-40. Registration as a seller of travel does not constitute approval by the State of California.

Trip Reservation And Refund Policy When two costs are shown for a trip, the lower cost is for Sierra Club members who must

include their SC membership number (SC#) with the reservation. Make checks payable to

Orange County Sierra Singles (OCSS) unless otherwise indicated. On OCSS events, if

cancellation is received 35 days prior to event (some exceptions), there is no charge.

Thereafter, refunds (less 10%) will be made if trip is full and space is resold to suitable

replacement. Some trips have unique cancellation policies, please refer to trip write-up. Other groups may have a different policy.

In the interest of facilitating the logistics of some outings, it is customary that participants

make voluntary carpooling arrangements. The Sierra Club does not have insurance for

carpooling arrangements and assumes no liability for them. Carpooling, ride sharing or

anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among participants. Participants assume the

8 mile hike on the quail trail in the City of Irvine Open Space Preserve South to a loop

following the Serrano Ridge to Little Sycamore Canyon to Stagecoach and West Canyon in

Laguna Coast Wilderness. Restrooms half way into the hike at the Nix Nature Center. Bring

hiking boots, 2 quarts water, snacks, 10 essentials & $$ for optional dinner. Rain cancels.

O: Caspers Wilderness Park Scenic Loop: Enjoy close-up views of the Santa Ana

Mountains and Santiago Peak on this moderate 8-mile, 800ft total gain loop hike through

Caspers Park just outside of San Juan. We will begin our hike with a visit to the interpretive

center. Bring 2qts water, lunch/snacks, ten essentials, sturdy shoes, hat, sunscreen, and $ for

parking and optional dinner afterwards in San Juan. Meet at 2:00pm at the South OC

Rideshare point, 31654 Rancho Viejo Road, San Juan Capistrano (parking lot at the corner of

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14-15 OCSS

O:20s30s40s Palomar Fall Color and Astronomy Camping and Hiking Trip: Join us in

the beautiful mid elevation forest south of Orange County for fall colors, a moderate 4.4 mi

R/T, 900ft gain hike to the world famous Palomar Observatory with tour, nighttime dark and

clear sky stargazing, and good fun around the campfire ring (campfire depends on fire

restrictions). This will be a Bring your own food and gear event; bring dinner, breakfast, and

lunch, snacks and beverages. Firewood will be provided. Trip Cost: $ 12 per person to cover

campground, firewood, and donation to Sierra Club. RSVP for payment instructions. Refund

available if you cancel 21 or more days before the trip date. Tour cost $ 5 per person, payable

at Observatory. Expect cold overnight temperatures. Details on what to bring emailed to

O: Trail Maintenance in San Mateo Canyon Wilderness: The Santa Ana Mountain Task

Force (Orange County Group, Sierra Sage Group, San Gorgonio Chapter) maintains trails in

the San Mateo Canyon Wilderness. Volunteers keep the trails open and safe. The

or sawing to clear the corridor and repairing tread as needed. Tools are provided. Bring work

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 8:30 AM OCSS O: Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve Newcomer Hike: Easy paced,

reasonably flat, 5 mile hike, approx 3 hrs. Newcomers Welcome. Enjoy the

natural beauty of Bolsa Chica, one of the last remaining wetland

ecosystems in Southern California. Meet 8:30 am. From Warner Avenue in

Huntington Beach turn south on Bolsa Chica Street to the end of the street

and trailhead (Brightwater). Park on the street. Bring camera, water, sun

protection, hat, light hiking boots, rain does not cancel. Ldrs: Houria Hall,

O: Black Star Canyon/Hidden Ranch: 10.2 mi, 1200' gain/loss. We will follow the stream

to begin, with deposits of low-grade coal in the banks which was used to smelt the silver ore

in Silverado Cyn. Meet on Black Star Cyn Rd, (from Santiago Cyn Rd turn E on Silverado

Cyn Rd, immediate L on Black Star, follow it to the gate & park). Bring 2-3 liters water, sun

O: Hot Springs to Lucas Canyon: We will climb steeply 1000' on the Sitton Peak Trail

from the Hot Springs area of Caspers Wilderness Park to reach the San Mateo Canyon

Wilderness and then descend 500' on the seldom-visited Lucas Canyon trail for lunch in tree

shaded Lucas Canyon. Round trip distance is approximately 9 miles. Meet at the south

Orange County rideshare. Bring 2 quarts water, lunch, hat, hiking boots. Rain or critical fire

THURSDAY, NOV 26-29 WILDERNESS ADVENTURES, OCSS O: Grand Canyon National Park Thanksgiving Bus Trip: Leave early Thu morning for

daytime bus ride to spend Thanksgiving in Grand Cyn National Park. Stay Thu & Fri at the

South Rim and Sat night in historic Williams, AZ on Route 66. Return to LA Sun evening.

Enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving meal, spectacular vistas on day hikes along the rim and into

the canyon. Explore interesting architecture and cultural sites. Harder/easier options offered

each day. Optional historic train excursion on the Grand Cyn Rwy to Williams for Sat night

($54 est) instead of taking the bus. Cost includes chartered bus, bus snacks/drinks, 2 nights

O: Los Pinos Peak (4510'): Strenuous 11 miles round trip, 2800' gain. Not a beginner hike.

A beautiful, but seldom led, route through pines and onto this Lower Peak in the Santa Ana

mountains. Meet 8 AM. From 5 freeway, take El Toro Road north, right at Cooks' Corner on

Live Oak Canyon road to Trabuco Canyon dirt road parking area. High-clearance vehicle

driving required. USFS adventure pass required. Heavy rain within 3 days cancel. Bring 3

20s30s40s Movie And Dinner Night, Star Wars Baby. Newcomers Welcome! Join us for

movie night at The Century Stadium 25 and XD,1701 W Katella Ave Orange, CA 92867.

Meet in front of the Theaters at the fountain. We will be watching STAR WARS: EP-VII. It

doesn't matter if you have seen it before, or if this is your first time, come and enjoy the

awesomeness. Optional dinner /drinks location will be selected afterwards to socialize and

O: Bolsa Chica Walk: 3842 Warner Avenue, Huntington Beach, CA 92649. Join us for a

walk around the 'bay'…Bolsa Chica Bay that is. This will be a flat 4 mile walk from the

Nature Center (on Warner just north of PCH) to the viewing area on PCH and back up to the

bluffs. This is a great time of year to visit the bay and we may even catch a glimpse of a

sleigh and reindeer. Meet at the Warner parking area with water and comfortable shoes. Rain

I: Angeles Crest Backcountry Ski Tour: Get that high

mountain snowy woods feeling just minutes from LA!

Moderately strenuous 6+ mile, out and back. Ski from

snowgate at road closure along Angeles Crest Highway.

Possible side trips up snow bowls may add a couple

more miles + a few 100 feet elevation gain & loss. Part

of route may be in pre-existing tracks, but recent

snowfall or side routes may require breaking new trail.

Intermediate X-C skills required & metal-edged,

backcountry skis & backcountry boots highly

recommended. Bring winter clothes, water, lunch. No snow or likely blizzard cancel trip.

I: Rock Creek Lodge Backcountry Ski: Spend two nights lodging in dorm-style cabin,

complete with hot showers & two gourmet home-cooked meals a day. Many day trips

possible from resort, either on groomed trails or deep into the surrounding backcountry;

leaders will guide backcountry tours each day. Most likely will return to cars by skiing down

2 mi, 400 feet groomed road. Intermediate X-C skills required & metal-edged, backcountry

skis & backcountry boots highly recommended. Avalanche beacon, shovel & probe required

for backcountry trips along with knowledge on how to use them. All participants must bring

sleeping bags. Cost: $330 – payable directly to Rock Creek Lodge and subject to deposit and

variable cancellation charges, depending on date – ask leader for info. Cost includes

snowmobile ride for participant and gear to lodge, but does not include lunches, Sno-Park
