The Organization
SIFE is an international organization that brings together the top
leaders o today and tomorrow to create a better more sustainable
world through the positive power o business.
SIFEs worldwide network consists o university students,
academic proessionals and business leaders.
Working with leading corporate partners and member universities,
SIFE establishes student programs on campuses around the world.
With the support and encouragement o their aculty advisors and
a local business advisory board, SIFE students apply business
concepts to develop community outreach projects that improve the
quality o lie and standard o living or people in need.
SIFE teams projects address a variety o topics, such as market
economics, entrepreneurship, inancial literacy, personal success
skills, environmental sustainability and business ethics. Rather than
mandating a uniorm set o projects, teams are encouraged to work
within the ramework o these topics while adapting their approach
to the diverse needs o people in dierent communities. The result
is a program that is global in scope and purpose with the lexibility
and responsiveness o a community-based organization.
The culmination o the SIFE program is an annual series o
competitions that provides a orum or teams to present the
results o their projects, which are evaluated by business leaders
serving as judges. Teams compete irst at the regional and
national levels, then at the international level when the national
champion teams rom each country meet at the SIFE World Cup.
The connections made possible through the SIFE network
are beneiting individuals and communities around the world
while ostering an environment or personal and proessional
development among the participants. In addition to the
community aspect o the program, SIFEs leadership and career
initiatives are designed to create meaningul opportunities or
learning and exchange as well as the placement o students and
alumni with companies with SIFE partner companies.
The Individual SIFE TeamSIFE teams are organized on individual university campuses.
There are intentionally very ew rules or procedures established
by SIFE World Headquarters or how these teams should
be organized and structured. Rules can be ound in the
Membership Guidelines section. Questions a SIFE team may have
that are not addressed in that section are all let to the discretion
o the individual SIFE team to answer, with the help o their
Country Leader or Program Manager.
There are many ways to organize and operate a SIFE team. Each
college or university is as unique as the community it serves.
This lexibility allows each institution to structure its SIFE team
in a manner that best its its aculty, student and community
needs. Each SIFE team has complete reedom to adopt rules and
procedures to govern its own activities, beyond those outlined
in this handbook, as long as they are consistent with the SIFE
Membership Guidelines.
This same lexibility applies to each teams educational eorts.
The only parameters SIFE World Headquarters places on a teams
educational outreach programs is that they should be designed
to educate others about the six SIFE educational topics: market
economics, success skills, entrepreneurship, inancial literacy,
environmental sustainability, and business ethics. Beyond
this, questions as to how many projects teams choose to carry
out, which audiences they target, whether they design original
educational material or use pre-designed material, etc., are all let
to the discretion o each team.
A set o best practices and suggestions or building a quality
and sustainable SIFE team can be ound in this handbook. The
SIFE Program sta in each country is also available to meet teams
individually and can provide personal consultation to teams as
they organize and develop their educational outreach projects.

Participation at SIFE Events Soliciting Network Membership
rom Institutions
Oicial SIFE events, including all regional/national competitions
and the SIFE World Cup, are not open to the public. An invitation
is required, even or members o the SIFE network, to attend
any oicial event. Invitations may only be extended by sta
members o the SIFE World Headquarters or an individual

World Headquarters.
SIFE teams that wish to organize events in the same metropolitan

the ollowing guidelines:
TheSIFEteammaynotofferinvitationsforitsmeeting
to any oicial SIFE event attendee or group o attendees,

The SIFE team will notiy the SIFE World Headquarters or

The SIFE team will not promote or respond to inquiries
rom any member o the media in the MSA (see above).
The SIFE team will not report any details o its meeting, activity,
project, etc., during any oicial SIFE competitive event.
Much o SIFEs growth in membership within colleges and
universities is directly attributed to the work o members o
veteran SIFE teams in recruiting and then mentoring teams at new
institutions. SIFE World Headquarters thanks these teams
and challenges all members o the network to continue to identiy
and help recruit potential new members. As SIFE teams serve in this
capacity within their home countries, they should be aware o the
ollowing guidelines:
1. Teams are encouraged to coordinate their activities with the sta
o their national SIFE organization.
2. Teams are not authorized to actually extend membership to
any other institution. Prospective colleges and universities
must submit an application to their countrys national SIFE
organization, which based on that countrys speciic eligibility
rules, will then make a decision as to whether or not to accept
that application.
When attempting to discuss membership opportunities or assist
with the organization o a SIFE team at institutions outside its home
country, a SIFE team must irst receive approval to do so rom the
sta o that countrys SIFE national organization.
Unortunately, or many legal reasons, we cannot extend membership
in the SIFE network to institutions in countries that do not currently
have a national SIFE organization in place. It is perectly appropriate
or SIFE teams to conduct educational outreach projects in such
countries and to collaborate with college/university students rom
that country. However, as described under the previous Trademark
Section, they are not authorized to represent themselves as
members o the network or use the SIFE trademark.
Furthermore, i partnering with another college/university, they may
not in any manner promote SIFE network membership opportunities,
distribute oicial SIFE material or initiate organizational activities
at the institution. Any SIFE aculty advisor or student team member
who believes they have identiied prospective network member
institutions in such a country should contact the SIFE World
Headquarters International Department at [email protected]

SIFE teams are strongly encouraged to seek coverage o their
educational outreach projects and team activities by local,
regional and national media outlets. They are urther encouraged
to reer to and to use the media tools and templates available
in team training materials, to include their institutions
administration in their eorts, and whenever needed, to seek the
advice and support o the SIFE sta.
The SIFE World Headquarters and each national SIFE organization
are also aggressively pursuing media opportunities. As SIFE World
Headquarters and national SIFE organizations build relationships
with the media to advance the mission o all SIFE teams around
the world, it is important that a consistent message is being
relayed. To avoid conlict, dilution or over-saturation o that
message, there will be occasions when SIFE World Headquarters
or the sta o a speciic national SIFE organization will need to
limit and/or control communication to a particular media outlet.
In accordance with the SIFE trademark guidelines, please be
sure to attach your teams name to any occurrence o the word
SIFE in all press releases and other documentation when
reerring to initiatives that are speciic to your team and not to

Any SIFE team ound in violation o these membership

I a team uses a cover or back page, it will count as one o
those pages. Teams should not use olders, report covers, etc. in
conjunction with their annual reports. Annual reports are distributed
to the judges during the set-up period as outlined in the Live
Presentation section o this handbook. Teams will be notiied in

Team Data Sheet- This report provides key inormation on theteam and its activities in the SIFE program year. Although the
inormation submitted is used by SIFE World Headquarters and will
not be shared with judges as part o the evaluation at any competitive
event, it must be completed and submitted online by each active
SIFE team prior to competing at a regional/national competition.
Active Team Sheet - Every active team (with the exception o
SIFE USA teams) must submit this orm prior to the regional/national

Understanding the Judging ProcessSIFE believes that the more knowledge teams have o their points
o evaluation and the scoring process, the better-prepared and
successul they can be. In an eort to provide insight on this, the
ollowing illustrates an outline o SIFEs judging process at all
competitions:
1. Judges are taken through an in-depth orientation process, during
which they are introduced to SIFEs overall program and trained
on how to best evaluate the competing teams in-line with the
pre-deined judging criteria. The judge orientation video used
as part o this process can be viewed at www.sie.org. Please
contact your Country Leader or Program Manager or its location
on the SIFE website. Faculty Advisors are welcome to attend the
judge orientation session as observers.
2. Each judge agrees to the Judges Oath, committing to providing
air and quality assessments o the teams overall programs (see
page 24 or a copy o the Judges Oath)
3. During each presentation, judges will assess the quality and
sustainability o the SIFE teams initiatives and its impact in
relation to the SIFE criteria, using the Individual Team Evaluation
(ITE) Sheet to take notes and assign scores. The ITE Sheet
is used as the key assessment tool during presentations and
also serves as the primary orm o eedback to teams on their
perormance (see page 25 or sample o the ITE Sheet).
4. Judges use the Cumulative Score Sheet (CSS) to actually assign
scores to teams which then serve as the guide and key deciding
actor in making their inal decisions on rankings (see page 27
or sample o the CSS).
5. One or more veteran judges serve as the League Coordinator and
acilitate the competition process in the room, ensuring that the
team presentations begin on time and that all judges are on-track
and present or all the presentations (in order or their votes to
count during the scoring process).
6. At the conclusion o the last presentation, judges then cast their
votes based on their rankings on the Cumulative Score Sheet (not
total scores) or competing teams. Individual votes per team and
per placement are then counted and mathematically tabulated to
arrive at the winning teams. This tabulation process is annually
reviewed and endorsed by KPMG.
Level o Impact
Judges use the Level o Impact descriptions (listed below) as a
tool in making better evaluations o the teams programs through
the ITE Sheet. Please note that the Level o Impact scale is
not mandated by SIFE nor is it part o the criteria. It is simply
a resource and guide. Though we expect judges to score teams
based on the range selected rom the Overall Rating Scale o the
Individual Team Evaluation Sheet, do note that their inal ranking
is ultimately their decision to make.
Poor (equivalent to low impact): Project(s) activities satisactorily
completed, but had little eect on changing or improving lives
Average(equivalenttomediumimpact):Project(s)gave
criterion/issue public attention, gained support and participation
o key stakeholders; endorsements/testimonials set orth
Good(equivalenttohighimpact):Project(s)advocatedthe

attention/support around project clearly advanced, key
stakeholders strongly inluenced
Outstanding(equivalenttoexceptionalimpact):Project(s)
clearly provided evidence o systematic/habitual, long-term
change that has signiicantly improved lives o target audience
members, has proven sustainable or multiple years, and has

The ollowing are simple guidelines to be used when
evaluating the impact o educational outreach projects. I a team
develops a lesson plan or young children and presents it to
eight classes, they have not completed eight projects. They have
presented one project eight times.
Example or counting hours o involvement: John and Maria each
worked ten hours on Project X (a total o 20 hours o student
involvement). Tom worked eight hours and Jane worked six hours
on the same project (a total o 14 hours o student involvement).
Total hours o student involvement on Project X is 34 hours. This
team would report a total o 4 students involved and 34 hours o
student involvement or Project X.
SIFE encourages all teams to be clear in explaining
the teams role in each activity in the annual report
and presentation.
The ollowing language should be used by SIFE teams to
measure media impact:
ReachFor broadcast media, reach is the estimated number o
unduplicated or dierent households or persons who viewed a
speciic station at least once or ive minutes during the average
week or the reported period o time. For print media, this is
number o people who read the publication.
FrequencyThe average number o times the unduplicated viewers (or
readers) will be exposed to the schedule o spots.
Gross ImpressionsThe average number o persons who view (or read) at the time
the spot is run, multiplied by the number o times the spot or
program is run.
(Reach x Frequency = Gross Impressions)
Student and Team Registration RequirementAny student who attends a SIFE competition at any level must
be a registered student through the online registration process
available at www.sie.org or through the Active Team Sheet (the
latter is or all teams outside o the USA). Please also note that
some countries have an application and registration process or
their competitive events. It is the teams responsibility to contact
their Country Leader or Program Manager or clariication on this
additional process i it is applicable in the country.
Room Set-Up and EquipmentSIFE will provide the ollowing equipment in each presentation room:
1. One eight-oot or larger screen
2. One extension cord
SIFE is not required to provide other equipment o any kind, such
as computers, slide projectors, monitors, TVs, DVD players, carts,
tables, etc. It is the sole responsibility o each team to secure the
use o any other equipment.
In the event that the SIFE organization provides equipment (e.g.
projector, laptop, sound ampliier, etc) or teams to use during their
presentations, the use o such equipment is strictly optional. Should
there be any technical issues/ailures, the SIFE organization will not
be responsible or its eect on the presentation, competition outcome
or any costs that may be incurred as a result o damaged equipment. The SIFE team bears ull responsibility and is thereore encouraged to
provide and use its own equipment.
Details about the speciic room set-up, plus any event-speciic
guidelines or restrictions related to your countrys regional/nationa
competition as well as the SIFE World Cup will be provided in
advance o the event.

Equipment FailureI a teams presentation equipment ceases to operate because
o a power ailure in the competition acility, the competition will be
halted until the problem is corrected. I the electronic equipment
the team brings into the competition room ails, the time will
continue to count down rom the presentation time block.
Competition Room AccessCompetition rooms are open to all registered attendees. SIFE
teams and visitors are invited to watch other teams present, but
they are asked to enter and leave rooms only during the set-up
period and breaks. No one (except members o media and SIFE
sta) may exit the room during the presentations or Question and
Answer period. The area behind the judges is considered public
domain. Doors to the competition room must remain unlocked and
clear at all times to provide access to SIFE sta.
Video/Copying PolicyBy participating in any SIFE-sponsored event, each team
grants SIFE World Headquarters the right and permission to
document and publicize or otherwise utilize its annual report,
audio-visual presentation and outreach projects or illustration,
advertising, training or any other lawul purpose.
SIFE teams may record the presentations o other teams at
SIFE competitions under the ollowing conditions:
1. No lights are to interere with or inhibit the presenting team.
2. The team videotaping should be courteous and cause the
least amount o distraction possible to the presenting team,
including no rewinding or ast orwarding o tapes or making
any other distracting noises during the presentation.
3. Set-up must be behind judge and audience seating.
4. No video ootages and photos taken at SIFE events
should be used inappropriately. Teams may treat these as
resources so long as they are used with respect or the
people being videotaped and photographed.
Media PolicyThe oicial SIFE photographer and videographer and members o
the mass media approved by SIFE have ull access to all
presentation rooms at any time. This includes the use o lights
and necessary equipment. All teams should be prepared or the
possibility o members o the media taping or taking pictures o
their presentations.
MisbehaviorBehavior that is inconsistent with the SIFE Code o Conduct and
deames the proile o a SIFE student and as a result, the SIFE
organization, is unacceptable. Each national SIFE organization
reserves the right to determine what unacceptable behavior is,
but it should be noted that this includes, but is not limited to:
use o oul language, physical battery, intoxication, harassment,
deaming other teams/judges/attendees/hotel sta, tampering
with and/or destruction o venue or SIFE property, etc. The
student and/or team involved in such negative activities may
be disqualiied/suspended/expelled rom participation at that
particular event or the overall SIFE program. The SIFE national
oice will determine the speciic penalty or each action on a case
by case basis and an oicial letter may be sent to the institutiona
administrator(s), notiying them o the incident and requesting
their assistance in ensuring that it does not reoccur.
ObserversUpon approval rom the organization, non-competing SIFE teams
are invited to attend any SIFE Regional Competition, SIFE National
Competition and the SIFE World Cup as observers. Registration
is required. Please contact your Country Leader or Program
Manager or inormation on how to register.
By attending SIFE events, attendees consent and grant SIFE the right to ilm, video, record, or photograph
him/her during the course o the event. Attendees grant permission to SIFE and its agents, employees andailiated organizations, to use the media taken o me or use in SIFE publications such as recruiting brochures, newsletters, and magazines, and to use such media in electronic versions on web sites or other electronic orm ormedia, and to oer them or use or distribution in other non-SIFE publications, electronic or otherwise, withoutnotiying me. The SIFE Team
There are ew rules governing individual SIFE team activities.
This lexibility allows each team to structure itsel and design
educational outreach programs that best it the needs o its
members, its institutions aculty and administrators, and
the community it serves. Individual SIFE teams have complete
discretion to adopt policies or procedures or their own
operation beyond those outlined in the SIFE Team Handbook.
This reedom oten leads team members to ask, What is the best
way to operate our SIFE team? There are many correct answers
to that question. Teams have been successul using a variety o
models. This handbook is an attempt to assemble a set o best
practices or strategies or developing SIFE on your campus. Please
note that the inormation provided in this manual represents only
suggestions, not rules. Every SIFE team is welcome to incorporate
as many or as ew o these recommendations as they choose.
The ollowing sections have been divided into our separate
areas, representing the signiicant activities required to create an
excellent SIFE team:
1. Developing a Mission Statement, Goals and Objectives
2. Educational Outreach Projects
3. Building a Sustainable Program
4. Preparing or Competition
The ollowing page provides a visual representation o these
activities. We suggest customizing this document to relect your
teams organizational details and distributing a copy to each o
your members.
Competition Judging Criteria Explanation
SIFEs primary goal is to create economic opportunities or others
through educating them about speciic topics. The topics were
careully selected and organized to empower SIFE participants
around the world. The oundation o that education is how a
market-based economy operates (Criterion 1). Once that concept is
understood, members o the economy all within one o two basic
categories: employees or entrepreneurs. Employees must have the
skills needed to successully compete in a global economy (Criterion
2). Entrepreneurs must have the ability to identiy a market need
and successully create a product or service to satisy that need
(Criterion 3). Ater the skills o employment or entrepreneurship
are successully obtained, it becomes increasingly important to
understand how to manage money to become and remain inancially
independent (Criterion 4). At a personal and business level we must
then operate in an environmentally sustainable manner (Criterion
5). The common moral thread present throughout the process is an
understanding o sound business ethics (Criterion 6). Lastly, a plan
must also be in place to ensure the long-term sustainability o the
team and its projects/programs (Criterion 7).
Team AssessmentAt the conclusion o each SIFE program year, the national SIFE
organizations conduct a ull assessment and evaluation o the
SIFE teams within their respective countries. The assessment
tool used to evaluate each team is the SIFE Team Index. This
tool mainly awards points to teams based on the depth o the
quality o their educational programs, their success within
the SIFE program, as well as several long-term sustainability
elements. Over the years, the SIFE Team Index has become
a key tool in helping SIFE sta assess the strengths andweaknesses o the teams and in response, build strategies to
ensure their growth and success. Though SIFE Headquarters
may use the individual team index scores to determine national
and worldwide scores, the primary objective o this tool is to
evaluate in-country perormance o teams based on which
appropriate measures will be taken to improve quality and
sustainability, thereby aecting the score positively. A sample
o the SIFE Team Index Scale Descriptions is available on the
ollowing page or reerence.

Developing a Mission Statement
The Drucker Foundation or Non-Proit Management deines a
mission as Why you do what you do; the organizations reason or
being; its purpose.
Given the lexibility each university has to implement SIFE on its
campus, developing a mission statement is an important step new
SIFE teams should consider. For veteran teams, this exercise will
energize and reocus eorts. A mission statement is not a slogan!
Written correctly, your mission should provide a perspective or
making important decisions, such as what educational outreach
projects to develop, which audiences to target, what outcomes
you hope to achieve through the projects you implement, and
members o the community you should involve as partners in
your projects. Developing a mission statement is the irst step in
establishing your team identity and should be the primary means
by which you communicate your teams purpose and inspire
commitments rom internal and external constituents.
These items identiy the general purpose o a SIFE team, the
overall subject matter a SIFE team should teach and the end goal
o its educational initiatives.
Given the unique nature o each college or university, try to
develop your teams mission statement in a manner consistent
with the values relected in your own institutions mission.
Key Ideas: Look at mission statement examples from successful
organizations around the world
Work within the broad framework of SIFE and your
college/university Keep the language simple
Write a mission statement that clearly defines why
your team exists
Reflect on your mission statement as you make
project decisions
