METHODS OF PILING

Classification by Method of Load Transmission The load of a structure may be transmitted to the ground by

1. End Bearing Piles

The base of an end bearing pile rests on a relatively firm soil such as rock, very dense sand or

gravel. The load of the structure is transmitted through the pile into this firm soil. Because the

base of the pile bears the load of the structure, this type of pile is known as an end bearing pile.

Two types of end bearing piles are shown in the Fig.1:

A. The preformed timber pile B. The in-situ reinforced concrete pile.

Both types transmit their load into the firm soil layer of the ground.


2. Friction Piles

If the firm soil is at a considerable depth, it may be very expensive to use end bearing piles. In

such situations, the piles are driven through the penetrable soil for some distance. The piles

transmit the load of the structure to the penetrable soil by means of skin friction or cohesion

between the soil and the embedded surface of the pile. This type of pile, shown in Fig. 2, is

called a friction pile.

Friction piles may be used to support a downward load, as shown in Fig. 2, From the diagram, it

can be observed that skin friction is acting downwards, in opposition to the upward load.



RECENT AVAILABLE TECHNIQUES IN PILING AND SHORING WORKS:

A. Piling Techniques:

A.1 Conventional Bored Piles :

Conventional bored piles are drilled by the rotary process through the soil layers

using RPF Piling special design, drilling equipment and tools. This process

guarantees minimum disturbance to original soil conditions.

The system of standard cast in place piling system has been approved by many of the

world’s leading consultants, universities and research institutes. This system has been

extensively utilized through the international market.



A.2 Continuous Flight Auger (CFA)

Through CFA piling technique, each pile is formed by screwing a continuous auger into

the ground to the required depth. Concrete is then pumped under pressure down the

hollow stem of the auger to the bottom of the bore. Once pumping starts, the auger is

progressively withdrawn bringing soils with it to the surface.

These operations are monitored in the driver's cab by the most advanced

computerized instrumentation system which ensures that the replacement concrete

column is formed correctly throughout the entire construction process. When the auger and its load of soil are finally removed, reinforcement to meet the design

requirement is placed in the concrete pile

B. Shoring (earth support) Systems: B.1 Soldier Piles Walls

The bulk-excavation process is executed in layers, to allow for the lagging panels (timber/ R.C

slabs) installation at the same time during excavation. Installation of the soldier piles (sometimes two back-to-back C-channels are used as a concrete of

B.2 Secant Piles Wall

The demand for efficient and economic retaining walls solutions has significantly increased during the past few years. With the varying conditions of adjacent soils / structures, the secant piles walls can be considered as one of the best solutions to handle / overcome such variance. The secant piles wall consists of two types of piles:

- Primary piles: which are rotary drilled to the required level, but poured with plastic

concrete (a mix of plain concrete and bentonite slurry), and no reinforcement is used.

- Secondary piles: which are rotary drilled to the required level (cutting through the edges of

the primary piles), then installation of reinforcement and pouring of concrete is carried out in

the same way as bored piles. The secondary piles are reinforced and designed to take the earth pressure and surcharges from adjacent

streets and structures, while the primary piles are formed of plastic concrete to allow for the cutting of

secondary piles, and at the same time creating an interlocking frontier to prevent ground water from

seeping into the excavation side.

C. Ground Anchors

Ground Anchors nowadays provide a non-obstructive, cost effective and time saving

solution for projects that include deep excavations works.

Deep excavations can now be constructed without the need for the huge / giant steel

struts as a routine procedure. Retaining walls for deep excavations can safely be tied

back by Ground Anchors, regardless of the type of soil the anchors are imbedded in.

Piles Testing

Normally in the piling field, there are only four (4) kinds of Piles Testing that are often used. The following are 1.Static Load Test 2.Dynamic Test 3. Integrity Test and 4. Crosse Hole Sonic Test. The rest of the tests are conducted on the program of the client or the Engineer.

Roots Piling Foundation works generally on the following Tests:

1. Static / Plate Load Test.

The bearing capacity is dependent on the size, shape and type of pile and on the properties of the soil in which it is embedded. The ultimate bearing capacity is the load at which the resistance of the soil becomes full mobilized while the load being greater than bearing capacity, which causes the head of the pile to settlement 10% from the pile head.

General pile load test on Preliminary (Non-Working Test Pile (NWTP)) and Working Test Piles (WTP) are to be carried out as per requirement of the specification. The test load on Preliminary Pile and Working Piles are defined in the specifications.

The test assembly consists of the following:

• Hydraulic Jack. • Pressure Gauge or Load Cell o Settlement Measuring Gauge. o Reference Datum. • Counter Weight Kent ledge, Ground Anchors or Reaction Piles.

The cross-hole sonic integrity testing is one of the most advanced and economical tools

for testing the integrity of drilled shafts. Currently, there is no better method that is non-

destructive of identifying any defect in the drilled shafts.

The test determines the quality of concrete between pairs of tubes pre-installed in bored piles

cast-in-situ concrete piles, or other types of concrete foundations using the Cross-Hole

Analyzer (CHA). The CHA measures the time it takes for an ultrasonic pulse to travel from a

signal source in one access tubes will be relatively constant. Longer travel times indicate the

presence of irregularities such as poor quality concrete, voids, honeycombs and soil

intrusions. The technique to be adopted shall be in accordance with ASTM D 6760 standard

specification.
