Chapters received awards based the Greek Life office’s STAR Program, which is made up of leadership, service, scholarship, organization management, educational programming, new member programs, and Greek unity. Awards were also given based on the Greek students themselves nominating and voting for their fellow Greek student leaders. Over 100 awards were given to Greek students, advisors, and organization along with there being several very talented performances throughout the event. Sigma Kappa Omega Sorority of the Multicultural Greek Council was dominant at this year’s awards show taking home 10 awards in all, most notably being the first chapter in SHSU history to win the 5 Star Chapter Award which is the highest honor a Greek organization can receive from the Greek Life office for achieving excellence in all 4 pillars of Greek life. Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, Lambda Theta Alpha Sorority, Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity all earned 4 star chapter awards as well. The Greek honor society, Order of Omega, coordinated the awards showcase again this year to continue the hard work to turn it into a longstanding tradition at SHSU. The LSC ballroom was packed full of Greek students and their families who came to support the recipients of the awards. A lot of hard work was put in by Order of Omega and the Greek Life office to make the Pantheon happen because they truly felt that the Greek student leaders deserve these awards for the hard work they do as they are the some of the most involved, respected, and called upon groups on campus. Congrats to all the chapters and student leaders that took home awards. takes for a photo with their new awards Brandon Pete of served as 1 of the host People’s Choice winner Kelsey Faubion poses with Sammy

Panhellenic Recruitment Sorority formal recruitment will take place August 30 – September 2, 2012 for the Fall 2012 semester. Fall recruitment is a formal process for prospective sorority members to meet women of the four Panhellenic Association chapters at SHSU and for the chapter women to meet the potential new members. It also is a time for potential new members to learn what it means to be a member of the Panhellenic Association and the SHSU Greek community. It is the perfect time to learn about the principles, standards, traditions, and programming of each individual sorority. Some chapters may also recruit after the formal recruitment period during a period called Continuous Open Bidding (COB) or informal recruitment (which takes place after formal recruitment or during the spring semester). The process during informal recruitment varies from chapter to chapter.

For information on Panhellenic Recruitment and to register visit: www.shsu.edu/~org_npc

The Greek Life Office will be holding the 3rd Annual, “Sneak Peek at Greek,” on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at 7pm in the mall area of the Lowman Student Center. The event will consist of music, food, and the opportunity to mingle with members of SHSU’s Greek community. Each Greek council and chapter will have informational tables and items to educate incoming and/or returning bearkats about their fraternities and sororities. Don’t miss this opportunity to get to know the university’s student leaders. After all, studies have shown that students involved in Greek organization’s are more likely to obtain a degree than non-affiliated students.

IFC Fall Recruitment Week IFC Recruitment Week will take place September 17-22, 2012. Recruitment is open to any male student attending SHSU that is in good standing with the university. All returning SHSU students as well as transfer students must have a 2.35 or higher cumulative grade point average. There is a $20 registration fee, but students will be refunded $5 if they attend all of the week’s activities.

To get more detailed information on IFC Recruitment and to register we encourage you to visit our website samgreeks.com. You may also visit the IFC table at Passport to Sam and talk to IFC’s executive board members during Sneak Peek at Greek the day prior to classes beginning which is August 28th. Fraternities are ethical and value-based organizations where strong bonds form and life-long friendships are developed.

While IFC fraternities will provide valuable professional networking across the country in the future, they provide interested young men with a family of like-minded and similarly motivated men immediately—and throughout their four years as an undergraduate at SHSU. IFC looks forward to meeting their potential new members and leaders of the undergraduate community at SHSU.

On April 11th, the university honored students and staff who have made a huge impact and served our great university along with the Huntsville community in a big way. Alpha Delta Pi sorority’s Megan Lee and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s Joshua Harris took home the McDermett Memorial Award and the Creager Memorial Award which are the top awards for senior student leaders. Delta Tau Delta Fraternity’s Erik Johnson won the outstanding

junior award. Erik’s Delta Tau Delta Fraternity also won the outstanding social fraternity. The fraternity not only ranked the highest in grades compared to the other male fraternities on campus, but they raised more than $6,000 for LiveStrong, the charity for men with cancer. Sigma Kappa Omega sorority won the outstanding social sorority. Not only did the sorority complete over 600 hours of community service and thousands of dollars for philanthropy, but they

also collected prom dresses, donations, and accessories to give girls in order for them to attend prom regardless of financial setbacks.

He has touched thousands of student leaders with his insights on leadership and accountability. He shows you how to meet your leadership challenges with a sense of humor, organization and the empowerment to make a huge impact on your campus. Pete has worked with Fortune 100 companies, high-growth startups, major non-profits and a wide variety of student campus groups. As a student, Pete led nine different student organizations. He’s a young professional who is uniquely able to bridge the space between the opportunities of student leadership and the talents necessary to excel in the world outside of college.
