So what can a Six Sigma programme do for YOUR business? Principal Practitioner Chris Merriman is a Six Sigma Master Black Belt with extensive global expertise gained from over 25 years’ experience in multiple manufacturing, service and IT industries, most of which have been in senior leadership positions.

He was formerly Director of Quality and Client Experience Global Enterprise Services at Unisys where he led a culture change programme based on the Shingo Model of Enterprise Excellence leading to new behaviours and results.

He said: “In all my years as a Master Black Belt, wherever I have gone, I have seen the power of Six Sigma to uncover and address opportunities for improvement.

“It can identify the root causes of problems and yield significant quality and productivity improvements.

“It helps people to join the dots between tools and techniques they are already aware of. Often teams don’t see how these tools fit together in to an effective methodology, but then in the Green Belt class there is a Six Sigma ‘Aha’ moment when it all starts to make sense.”

What is Six Sigma?

Six-Sigma has been hailed as one of the most powerful manufacturing performance tools, ever.

But what is Six Sigma? The phrase was coined by Motorola in the 1980s to describe the company’s approach to refining and improving all key production and business processes.

The Six-Sigma approach enabled Motorola to achieve very high levels of process capability.

The result? A radical elimination of business and process costs resulting in massive increases in profitability.

Since then, the Six-Sigma approach has been sweeping the manufacturing world and transforming the way businesses operate.

Our Six Sigma training courses are designed for practical, real-world application, to deliver change quickly and sustainably. The skills can be applied to improve any area of business performance: quality, productivity, cost within manufacturing, supply chain, or support functions.

Although our courses are primarily around Six Sigma methods, including statistical analysis techniques, it also includes a range of techniques from within lean and TPM, giving you the broadest possible tool kit and the flexibility to draw on it as best suits your own organisation.

Six Sigma is equally applicable for businesses with established improvement infrastructure and those just starting out on their journey to Operational Excellence.

Define the problem and why it needs to be solved

Measure the process and the gap in performance

Analyse the process to identify the prime root cause(s)

Improve the process, measure the results and learn

Control the process to a higher performance (process capability)

“I’m looking to evolve in to a CI manager role. This is very good at showing you how to look at data to see how you are going wrong, and how you can interpret it, make improvements and fix processes.”Lee Maddock, Lab Manager, Nutricia

So what do past delegates think of our Six Sigma programmes?

“We’ve learned a lot about how engagement of everyone on a project is important and not just glory hunters who want to solve a problem themselves. We celebrate success and engagement.

“I’m really getting it and I’m ready to take a lot of this back to work with me already. I’ve been on various courses but not on this level.”

“This has been my first taste of Six Sigma. My boss is a Black Belt, and I work with Green Belts and they suggested this course to me.

“I think it is really useful. My job is to make sure that production runs smoothly and there are different tools which you can apply to many different businesses. You can find the right one for your particular purpose. This allows you to apply everything you need straight away.

“It gives you structure, credibility and removes the questions. It also help you get a lot more out of the QC data a business produces. I’ll be able to see what it means and it will allow me to fix any problems. “

Mark Brady, McCormick Foods. Matthieu Stricanne, process engineer at Albany International.
