Sigmar Polke – Capitalist Realism and other Illustrated Histories represents another important step in MASP’s initiatives to bring to Brazil whatever is most relevant today in the visual arts scene. In this context, in 2010, there were two exhibitions, never shown before in the world, which had here their world première: the one of photos by the moviemaker Wim Wenders and the other, Contemporary German Painting, assembling what there is of most relevant in this post Berlin Wall art.
Both of them with international repercussion, they received the best references in the main media of this country. Now we bring Sigmar Polke, one of the most creative and influential artists of the last 50 years, in an exhibition with the com-plete series of his graphic works.
After his death last year, this is the first large exhibition of this German artist who was born in 1941. Coincidentally or not, it was in the 13th Art Biennial of São Paulo that Sigmar Polke was awarded the First Prize for Painting and emerged to the world as an invaluable artist. In the present exhibition put together by the curators Tereza Arruda and Teixeira Coelho we can see for the first time ever the originals made by Polke and presented in São Paulo in 1975 as a brochure under the title Day by Day.
MASP has the honor to present, with the support of the Ministry of Culture through its incentive laws and sponsored by Mercedes-Benz of Brazil and the Deutsche Bank, the international debut of this exhibition. We would like to thank both these institutions for their cooperation in bringing to São Paulo one of most relevant artists in the 20th century.

It is a great satisfaction for the Deutsche Bank, in its 100th anniversary in Brazil, to bring to São Paulo Sigmar Polke’s exhibition Capitalist Realism and other Illustrated Histories, in this way contributing to a better understanding, in Brazil, of one of the most important German artists of the 20th century, one who has praised the liberty of expressing himself above everything else, which is the right thing for an artist to do.
Deutsche Bank has been supporting art for a very long time now. It was one of the first corporations to introduce con-
temporary art into the working space, thus making it a part of everyday life. At the end of the 70s, according to its motto “Art in the working place”, it took the first steps to create the largest corporate collection in the world (around 56,000 works), displayed in its offices everywhere.
By sponsoring once again an important artistic initiative such as this exhibition, the Deutsche Bank underlines its global commitment to promote art as a means to reach a full human development.

Mercedes-Benz of Brazil is honored to support the exhibition Sigmar Polke – Capitalist Realism and other illustrated histories, which assembles more than two hundred graphic works to tell us a little of the history of the art and of the his-tory of the world in the last fifty years.
This exhibition is also a tribute to the art of Sigmar Polke, who brought new parameters and themes to a world begging
for innovations and went beyond the ideological and conceptual art critique. In a Germany filled with sudden changes everywhere, in the beginning of the 60s Polke opened new perspectives to look at the politically engaged art that was made at the time, both in the East and in the West. And it was not by chance that he became one of the most frequent references of the contemporary production in the last decades.
We express our gratitude to the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateubriand – MASP, partner of Mercedes-Benz in several cultural undertakings, for this new occasion for us to come forward as a sponsor for a beautiful and relevant exhibition.
In doing so, we reaffirm our belief that, by taking the art made by talents such as Polke to the large public, we show
man’s unlimited capacity to create. We hope that the legacy left by this artist will stimulate new talents to look for, in his invaluable work, the inspiration to move forward in large steps.

A liberdade.

The freedom to want, with which intelligent creatures, all of them and only them,
were and are endowed is the biggest gift God made in his generosity and in his kind-
ness and the one he cherishes most: thus Dante makes Beatrice begin the 5th chant
of the Paradise, in the Divine Comedy. In Dante, intelligent creatures are men and
angels. Let us stay for now with men. Freedom to want. Freedom. Dante’s exegetes
agree that inside these verses flows the “long and passionate love story between
Dante and freedom, for him the major symbol of man’s dignity and which makes him
an equal to God”, as says, for example, Anna Leonardi1. An equal to a god.
A bold idea. For then and for today. To become an equal to a god. The freedom to
want. Hard to put into practice. For the common man and also for the artist. Are the
artists free? More free than the regular man? Sometimes. Not always. There are mo-
ments of freedom in the lives of artists. But this freedom to want not always prevails
in the whole life and the whole career of an artist, in all the running about of an art-
ist. Picasso was a free artist, Picasso exerted the freedom to want. Others could not
be so free, did not want to be so free. Some remained devoted to only one or almost
only one obsession or, looking from a different point of view, some were prey to one
or almost only one obsession. Such as Lucian Freud who focused on the figured body,
the figurative body, in the truth and decay of the body. He did not make a lesser art
on account of that. This is not the matter. But others found a wider freedom to want.
Sigmar Polke was one of them. For art criticism this freedom to want takes on a
specific name, maybe a pompous one , perhaps a pretentious one: plurality of styles
or “multiple signature styles”, as David Thistlewood says. In more straightforward
words, at the same time more poetic: the plain freedom to want. Polke tried every-
thing. In the words of a reporter of The Guardian who tried (in vain) to interview the
artist when he was preparing an exhibition at the Liverpool Tate Gallery2, Polke’s
work is a chaotic mixture of techniques, jokes, morbid phantasies, dangerous radio-
active pigments, heteroclitic materials, images extracted from cheap publicity and
news about concentration and extermination camps or from works by Goya and
old German prints for children, and alchemy notes, abstractions, paintings on cheap
cloth or on highly elaborated canvas of translucid acrylic, photos, little known films...
This could be taken for a loss of orientation and opportunism. But also for a
pot-pourri, literally a rotten pot or a pot with rotten things, on the surface a repulsive
name (whose origin only the labyrinths of language can explain) for something how-
ever delicious: a container with flower petals and dry leaves mixed with spices and
herbs in order to perfum a room. Or a vase for the freedom to want. For the daring
of the freedom to want. It is easier to accuse an artist of opportunism and lunacy or
lack of coherence and style (to accuse him of not having found a voice of his own)
than to recognize in him a freedom to want and accept this freedom in front of the
other who not seldom wants to control the former by anticipating whatever he may
do. A freedom that perfumes air.
When words lack to seize something, to explain something even if only to oneself,
when one is not able to really understand, vague terms come to the rescue: Polke was
called a pop artist, of the pop version that came from beyond the Iron Curtain or the Berlin
Wall. To say this is to say too little, nothing actually. There are more fitting expressions
for Polke. In 2004, the Tate Modern, London, presented a comprehensive exhibition of

A figuração livre, claro

his work. This exhibition came under a title that expressed well what would be seen:
History of Everything. The title of the exhibition was: Sigmar Polke: History of Everything.
What Polke did was precisely that, a history of everything. His is an art of the history of
everything. History is, history still is the main character and one of the central drives of the
work of many German artists, Gerhard Richter, Anselm Keefer and Neo Rauch, to name
just a few among the most relevant (with some others who got caught unaware in the
net of History). But in fact Polke, even more than the others, really composed, with his
varied work in painting, gouache, print, photos, and films, an explicit history of everything.
A history from soccer to politics, passing by the Olimpic Games and contemporary
everyday scenes. Of Germany and the world. At times in only one series, such as this
one that could be called “The ball went in”, whose theme was the everlasting dispute
about the 1966 soccer World Cup in England, exactly between this country and Ger-
many – a turbulent game where the third goal of England, which decided everything,
should not have been considered valid because the ball hit precisely the line and did
not go in. (There was still a fourth goal by England that should not have been validated
also because fans had invaded the lawn. A scandal, this game.) The ball went in, die
Ball war drin, said the English, the referee and the Russian assistant referee (or better,
the assistant referee that came from the USSR, because USSR existed still, the USSR
that had been eliminated in the previous game precisely by Germany: revenge of the
assistant referee, some said). The German Polke made a series of works so labeled: Die
Ball war drin. In one of them, the English royal family appears getting into a subway. In
another, Queen Elizabeth comes forward as a airplane captain, check list in hand where
one reads Die Ball war drin. In yet another, Nixon appears exultant at a political rally,
obscene such as Nixon could be, making the V of victory with his fingers, along Fidel,
who also lifts an imposing finger in the air, and besides the pope, who opens his arms
upward, fingers of the hand open to the air, welcoming the crowd. And only one title:
Die Ball war drin. Three versions of the same reality: Nixon, Fidel and the pope, a same
thing? How awful. Even more when one knows that die Ball doch nicht war drin, the
ball did not really go in, none of these three balls went in. What does Polke say? He is
making history, a history of everything. One could almost say that it does not matter
what he is telling but how he tells it. However, it does matter what he tells.
How to recognize an artist who assumes and makes use of the freedom to want, sup-
posing one has to classify an artist? If he makes use of the “manifold styles of signature”,
where is he, under which name is he? Where to validate his signature, at which art no-
tary office? But recognizing or identifying Sigmar Polke is really a problem? This problem
might be smaller than whatever a certain critic suppose or want to make one believe. The
theme of the artist’s voice, of the recognizable signature of the artist, was really a question
until Modernity, including Modernism. At the time of Michelangelo, for an artist to be
recognized as such he had to show, first, that he could paint or draw like some of the
recognized masters of the time, to the point that he could be mistaken for them and, after
that, he had to show that he had a signature of his own, to show that he was an artist
different of all others. Modernity took upon itself to change this condition: the artist had
to be unique since ever, since the beginning, and keep being so. The freedom of Modernity
was a guarded freedom. Post-modernity, this post-modernity with which Polke is rightly
identified, went farther: an artist is free from everything and from now on also free from
himself also. Roland Barthes used to deny himself, deny his own style and, by so doing, to
disorient his admirers and friends. Bachelard advanced that one of the basic exercises for
liberation and, therefore, for the construction of the I, of the Self, was the liberation of the
individual not only from objects (which belong to the World although I may think they are
mine) and from the time of the Other (the time to work defined by others, the time to eat
defined by others), but also the liberation as to the times of his own body. More amply, lib-
eration from his own language, from his own way of thinking. Wittgenstein: it is necessary
to change always the way of seeing the world, it is necessary to change always the way of
thinking. It is necessary, that is, to set free from the cultural habit, this big vice and this big
self-indulgence, including or maybe chiefly in the field of art, and look for another thing.
Polke did that. However... in a huge art exhibition that presents hundreds of artists such
as the 2011 Venice Biennial, as soon as one goes into a certain room where half a dozen
Polkes are shown and not knowing that there were Polkes in there, from the entryway the
observing visitor knows he stands in front of Polke, even though the half a dozen works
are divided into two or three different styles. A style as the Polke-dots, as became usual to
say – a pun with polka dots, that cloth pattern with dots that seems to have been created
in the 19th century, and that Polke uses in many works of his just like some photographic
or printing reticule or pixels and that, for this reason, some associate to Lichtenstein style,
which is really not the case. Or this other style, which includes covering with some trans-
parent or translucid material, a significant part of the background or a background already
previously worked on by the artist with some image or some colored area, and over that
material sometimes apply another significant material. Or the style of the newspaper pho-
tographic images or of fashion advertisements (when fashion advertisement was made
with drawings and not photos), upon which Polke almost always applies one or several
colored areas. Or still the style of cartoons or illustrated jokes he often uses, also with some
colored spot or blotch or distortion. Since its is possible to immediately that some works
are by Polke, does it mean that the artist of freedom gives in to the prison of himself, to the
jail of his own self? It is very hard to break free from it, completely. And perhaps it does not
matter that some times one cannot break free completely. What is vital is to be conscious
that it is necessary to want the freedom to want and to practice is as much as possible.
People say that an artist should have a say about the world so that whatever he
or she says will add to the world. What Polke has to say about the world is a lot. It is
everything, almost everything, everything possible. But whatever he says of relevant
about the world, when he says it about art it is about the mode of liberty, the mode
of liberty to want. That is what may be identified in Polke when one sees him among
his peers: the will of the freedom to want, something very difficult to exercise, very
hard even to imagine, a freedom that in art is divine. In art as in other fields of life.
The title of this exhibition points, on one end, to the event that brought Sigmar
Polke to the art world: a performance (or art action) in Dusseldorf, October 11th,
1963, whose title was Life with pop. A demonstration of the capitalist realism,
planned and executed by him, Gerhard Richter, Wolf Vostell and Konrad Lueg (later,
Honrad Fischer). In the showroom of a department store, a living room complete with
all the necessary furniture was the set for the live presence of those artists while a
television set was showing, in real time, at 8 p.m., when the action took place and
which was also the time for the main nightly news which was followed bu a docu-
mentary called “Adenauer’s era”, from the name of the Germany chancellor since
the reconstruction, from 1949 to 1963, which included the moment in which that
art action was taking place (Adenauer left the government that very same October).
The main part of the title of this action is impregnated by the irony and derision that
were to be Polke’s signature much more than his partners in that action. That title
was making fun of the official aesthetics of communism from which Polke was happy
to evade, the socialist realism. But it was also a jocose comment on the occidental
pop art of the time, entirely clean and shinny and whose critical content was never
to be demonstrated and that was soon to become an authentic commodity just like
anything else, a reason why Polke, criticizing th banal reality of his time, can never be
called a pop artist himself, as some have quickly called him – and this through any
angle one might choose. And on the other end, the title of this exhibition points to
what is clearly evident, the presence of History, with a capital H, in the work of this
artist that remained faithful to what still is, through the XX and the XXI centuries,
essential to art, just like in the past: figuration. Free figuration, of course.

Sigmar Polke, Realismo Capitalista e outras Histórias ilustradas
listischen Realismus, Berlim, 1971, p. 43.
The exhibition Sigmar Polke – Capitalist Realism and other illustrated His-
tories created for the Art Museum of São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand is the first
exhibition of the complete set of graphic works and complete editions by the
artist made between 1963 and 2009, to be presented outside the German terri-
tory. The interest of the curators may be taken as a posthumous homage to this
renowned artist, who for the first time received a prize precisely in the city of
São Paulo when he took part in the 1975 Biennial as part of the official German
delegation. In that context, he was awarded the major prize for painting. Sigmar
Polke also created for the event a brochure called “Day by Day” with an edition of
800 copies to be handed out at the opening of the Biennial. That material is also
included in this showing, in the original matrixes that were used in that edition.
After 1975, Sigmar Polke follows his artistic path to never more come
back to Brazil. The recognition of his work is stressed through other prizes,
such as the one from the 1986 Venice Biennial. But is was in São Paulo
that the young artist found the ideal platform for his first meaningful in-
ternational renown.
His work, a large account of everyday life overcast by the historical
shadow, always had faithful followers. This fact makes possible today for us
to put together this exhibition thanks to the actions and engagement of two
collectors, who redeemed and maintained this great legacy of international
contemporary art. Dr. Axel Cielsielski took upon himself the task to gather
together in his collection all of the works made by Sigmar Polke in graphic
arts and editions, while a couple of private collectors who prefer to remain
anonymous kept together the original works of the “Day by Day” series.
Making a collection surpasses all and any personal vanity and even machina-
tions from the market, when we consider the value – not the financial one
– but the ethical value of classification, preservation and making known the
cultural legacy shown here.
After Sigmar Polke passed away in 2010, it was up to his followers the
task to preserve the universe of works he left, as well as to show it to the
world, for a continuous and deep understanding of contemporary art, as
Sigmar Polke is one of its leading characters.
From dot to dot a tale is told... Sigmar Polke used to say he heard voices from beyond, coming from
superior beings, who told him how to proceed in his art. Once “a flamingo
instead of a bunch of flowers”, other times – “paint the upper right corner
black”! Obedient, the artist followed these indications, otherwise he should
have to stay passive waiting for his turn or the right time. For him, everything
was a question of time1: painting appears at the right time, as well as the
dots – one of the trade marks of his work – appeared also in his artistic pro-

Vostell, Sigmar Polke, Richard Hamilton, Gerhard Richter, Franz Gertsch, Christian Boltanski, Al Taylor,
Christiane Baumgartner, Tacita Dean, Rosemarie Trockel, Simon Starling e Eberhard Havekost.

duction at the right time, coming to “share his life as members of a family”2!
His alchemy was made up by intuition, planning and chance, besides,
of course, every kind of materiality that came across his path. Experimental
curiosity was always a part of his life. It is due to this detachment and in-
defatigable laboratorial disposition that we have works so rich in diversity
in the show we present here. The path goes through different techniques
of printing, collage, assemblage, drawing, photography, painting on paper,
newspaper, plastic sheets, metalic material, among others3 . It is worth stress-
ing that for Sigmar Polke his production of works on paper stands at the
same level of his painting, not being a secondary or occasional production.
The artist dedicated himself continuously to this technique, open to the re-
search of the new materials that would appear in the market.
Having been born in 1941, he was a child during the last years of the Sec-
ond World War and the reconstruction of Germany. Sigmar Polke’s artistic path
begins in 1961 when he entered the Art Academy of Düsseldorf, city where he
had been living since 1953. In Hamburg, the artist was able to spread his ar-
tistic voluptuousness in 1970 and 1971 as an invited professor. As a testimony
of a turbulent political phase, he did not fault to register the latter in his work
and always in an intelligent, ironic and critical manner. This path was not soli-
tary, for he had one of his most important contemporaries, the artist Gerhard
Richter, walking side by side for years on end. Mainly in the 60s, both of them
shared similar practices by using at the same time a huge registry of images,
which resulted in an ample aesthetic experience with a subversive touch in
its visuality. Along with Joseph Beuys, Georg Baselitz and Anselm Kiefer, they
endowed German art with the international renown that reaches up to now.
The potential of this group may be seen, for example, in the exhibition “New
Realities”4 presented at the Kupferstichkabinett of Berlim at present. It shows
a comprehensive review of reproducing techniques such as engraving up to
nowadays with the revolution of the new media. Sigmar Polke stands out in
this context as one of the forerunners of this universe creating step by step, or
rather point by point5, in a mechanical exercise of bringing a commonplace
technique of mass culture such as serigraphy up to the level of international
contemporary art. Furthermore, this work was the starting point for the exhibi-
tion mentioned before, as it was a recent donation to the Kupferstichkabinett
2 So said the artist still in the 1970s, at the beginning of his career, in a con-
fession to René Block, one of the of Sigmar Polke’s gallerists in Berlin. In: René
Block, Grafik des kapitalistischen Realismus, Berlin 1971, p. 43.
3 For us, curators, this exhibition is a kind of triumph, because when a year
ago, for this same institution, we were putting together the exhibition „German
Contemporary Painting – If not now“, we had to give up to presenting Sigmar
Polke’s paintings, for all of his artistic alchemy gave rise to frail paintings, unable to
be shipped to Brazil. In January 2010, the visit to the exhibition “Sigmar Polke. Wir
Kleinbürger!Zeitgenossen und Zeitgenossinnen (Politik)” at the Hamburger Kunsthal-
le, in Berlin might have been unconsciosly the push to make the present exhibition.
4 Exemplified in this showing by famous works such as „Friends“, first pu-
blished by Galerie H from Hannover in 1967. This work originated from a small
image of a tiny piece of newspaper, probably an advertisement. It shows two
female figures smiling and seductive in summer attire. The original image was
enlarged and formed by a perfect structure of spread apart points, without any
photo manipulation. Incidentally, he used this same theme for a painting in 1965.
5 By Alves, Márcio Moreira, published by Rowohlt Verlag, Reinbek bei

from a private collectionist containing 30 editions by Sigmar Polke.
Quite early, the multifaceted technique became a trade mark of Sigmar
Polke and therefore his means to access directly his destiny: a continuous
satirical critique of the system under an illustrated form and not placat-
ing form! Transformations, adventures and surprises are stratagems used
by Sigmar Polke to spread the “capitalist realism” in opposition to the
“official” socialist realism existing in Eastern Germany. Often the artist
stresses metaphorically the conflict of the human being, crushed between
the standing of the State and his own phantasy. Situations so conflicting
as birth and death. In a way this stiffness goes unnoticed in his work,
for Sigmar Polke uses magical formulas and metamorphoses as forms of
expression, going between trivia and high-brow culture, moving among
politics, economics, science, beliefs, social behaviour and other. The artist
remains, therefore, whole, with no visible fault.
A brief tour of this Exhibition and of the Day by Day series, made for
the São Paulo Biennial, 1975, show Sigmar Polke’s creative process and
universe. At first sight, it would be naive to believe that the most symbolic
and typical of his works to command the scene would be those made
by the explosion and enlarging of the image through spreading the dots
that build the representation. In every work, there are unique features to
discover. The newer the work, more experimental is Sigmar Polke’s produc-
tion, exploring layers and transparencies over an indefatigable materiality.
Coming Back to São PauloSão Paulo is the stage for Sigmar Polke in two relevant moments:
1975 with his physical presence and participation in the São Paulo
Biennial, debut of his career and international award winnings
2011 the exhibition SIGMAR POLKE Capitalist Realism and other
Illustrated Histories conceived for the Art Museum of São Paulo Assis
Chateaubriand as a posthumous retrospective.
Between these two events, there is a huge gap of time and also of
context if we observe the political evolution of Brazil since the 70s, a
time when the country was ruled by political dictatorship. This fact made
Sigmar Polke feel so uncomfortable that it is the theme of a film he pro-
duced in Brazil. Named “São Paulo (Brasil)” and shot in 16 mm, the film
shows images he captured when staying in São Paulo, and its soundtrack
is an extract from the publication "Brasilien - Rechtsdiktatur zwischen
Armut und Revolution" (Brazil – right wing dictatorship between Poverty
and Revolution) . At that time, with no second thoughts, Polke dived into
the local context and raised his voice in favor of minorities.
Today, Sigmar Polke’s work exhibited in such an ample manner in São
Paulo is a witness to the liveness and vitality of his life, his beliefs and
his artistic production!
Here, I thank the Art Museum of São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand, as well
