AN EGYPTIANSOJOURN

Alexandria, Egypt, is a must-see for anyone
with a penchant for history and travel, says Marie-Claire
W hen you get an opportunity to fly business class to Alexandria, it seems churlish to refuse. Especially when you add to the experience, a two-night stay in the Four Seasons Hotel at San Stefano. So, I packed my bags and headed off to sample the magic of Alexandria.
After a short three-and-half hour
flight, I had arrived in Alexandria – or Alex, as it’s affectionately known as by
the locals – and with the help of a representative from the Four Seasons hotel
it took less than 15 minutes to make our way through the airport. A mere 10
minutes later I was at the hotel where a warm and friendly welcome awaited,
before being escorted to my room. The Four Seasons Hotel Alexandria at San Stefano, with its distinctive
European flair and Mediterranean ambience is elegance and opulence
personified. Comprising 118 rooms and suites, including the Royal Suite that
takes up the entire 18th floor of the hotel and four Presidential Suites on the
19th floor, it is without a doubt Alex’s premier hotel.Decorated in a classic French design, with a fresh palette of yellows, blues
and white, my room offered a breath-taking view from the balcony, overlooking
the hotel’s circular infinity pool. A very clever design feature means that the
eye sweeps straight out over the beach and the Mediterranean, cloaking the
busy multi-lane road that separates the hotel from the Corniche and its private
beach, access to which is provided for guests by an underground passageway.
After unpacking and freshening up in my luxurious Greek-inspired marble
TRAVEL
I don’t know who invented high heels, but all women owe him a lot, said Marilyn Monroe and she
was right.
There may be a whole lot of debate on when the high heels were invented, but here are a few things
that we surely know. High heels were worn both by men and women throughout the world for many
centuries and for variety of reasons.
The first instance of high heels being worn dates back to the 1533 marriage between Catherine de’
Medici with the Duke of Orleans. Mary Tudor was also known to wear heels that were as high as
possible. Around 1660, a shoemaker named Nicholas Lestage is said to have designed high heeled
shoes for Louis XIV. Some were more than 10cm, and most were decorated in various battle scenes
and these ‘Louis heels’ subsequently became a fashion. Even today, the term is used to refer to
heels with a concave curve and outward taper at the bottom similar to those worn by Madame de
Pompadour, Louis XV’s mistress.
The rest, as the cliché goes, is history!
Today, it is a well-established fact that shoes are among the few obsessions that men and women
(Imelda Marcos ring a bell?) are known to harbour. There have been innumerable movies and songs
that pay overt and subtle tribute to footwear and their designers.
Names such as Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin create as much a frenzy as
George Clooney or Brad Pitt can (if not more!) These men have after all taken the simple footwear
and turned them into collectibles and status symbols. Whether it is high heels, pumps flats, flip flops
or trainers, we can’t help but covet a designer pair
In this issue, we drool over the man who put the ‘sexy’ into stilettos. Monsieur Christian Louboutin is
after all a man after our very own heart!
Happy sole searching folks! See you next issue…
‘Sole’fully yours!

cream (A luxury white cream made with shea butter). Both the scrub and the body cream come in glass prisms with light-reflecting angles. The purse spray
completes the beauty experience. A luxury object in itself, the handbag-size spray is an ideal travelling companion and looks truly amazing.

ABSINTH MAGICThe house of Amouage has unveiled its latest offering called Memoir.
The collection is the fourth in a series of olfactory narratives, following on from Lyric, Jubilation and Epic. Amouage Creative Director
Christopher Chong was reportedly inspired by Charles Baudelaire and set about channeling Baudelaire’s decadent genius to create a
potion with the potent ingredient of Absinth with other floral accords. While Memoir Man unmasks itself with a seductive green sensation of
Mint pervading to an intoxicated journey of Absinth and Wormwood, Memoir Woman manifests with a spicy fusion of Absinth to resonate the magical aura of the Black Swan. Both fragrances come in bottles
made of black glass crystal, topped with a silver caps accentuated by a black Swarovski crystal.

J-Lo’s got a song about them.
Oprah Winfrey did a whole
episode on them. Lady Gaga
and Victoria Beckham have
proclaimed their love for
them. Every celebrity in the
world, from Madonna to
France’s first lady Carla Bruni,
swears by ‘em killer heels’
Louboutins. Not that it should
come as a surprise, given
that Christian Louboutin has
been ruling the world of soles
for long time now. In fact,
Louboutin recently received
the highest honour a shoe
designer can receive these
days: His shoes were featured
in Sex And The City film (This
despite the fact that Manolo
Blahniks were featured more
often in the TV series).
So even if you do have your
eccentric Blahniks, or your
Choos (we are assuming
here that these are NOT from
the Tamara Mellon factory),
your collection can never be
complete without a sensual
pair of Louboutins with their
signature Red Soles.
Louboutin’s work is pure
genius. His shoes are adorned
with everything; from feathers
to satin bows to silver chains
and come in colours like
purples, reds, metallics, and
of course, the classic black.
All these are mounted on
sky-high stiletto heels and
although the flats still remain
the heart of Louboutin’s
design, the stilettos are
really the soul of this artist’s
creation.
So, when Signature got an
opportunity to interview this
legend, we quickly whipped
up some questions (We were
actually attempting to create
a record with this one, for the
most number of questions
asked!) but had to limit it to
very few…
Growing up with women and
watching showgirls…what
was the first lesson you learnt
about shoes?
I learned that shoes can
change the gait of a woman,
affect her confidence and the
way she feels and transform
her look.
You have freelanced for
design houses such as Chanel
and Yves Saint-Laurent. You
also worked with Roger Vivier.
What made you want to
launch your own label?
I have had the pleasure of
working with many fashion
houses and have taken a
great deal away from my
experiences with them. I
always wanted my own label,
and still remain heavily
involved in all aspects of the
company.
I design my own shoes, name
the styles, assist in sourcing
materials, oversee the
photography and personally
weigh in and visit the stores
myself. The beauty of having
your own brand is that you
can control its destiny and
your vision.
The father of the red sole once
made some shoes with baby
blue soles? What happened
then?
The blue soled shoes are for
my bridal line and are still
in production. The line is
very popular and we also do
special order shoes for brides
and personal friends upon
request.
You included flats and
trainers in your current
collection? Any particular
reason?
As much as I love a heel and
women and men love a heel,
it is practical to have flats in
your wardrobe and I listen to
my clients when they tell me
what they are looking for in
a shoe. The flats I create are
often as design heavy as the
heels and are characteristic
Louboutin.
The trainers were an
experiment venturing
into designing for men –
something I’ve always wanted
to do. The first few styles did
so well that I’ve added more
to this season to include more
embellished trainers and
brogues.
For a designer whose shoes
are coveted by women from
London to Beijing, probably
even more than diamonds,
does the attention ever cease
to be a boon?
You know I absolutely love my
clients and I really appreciate
their support and enjoy
meeting them. Just this year I
travelled to Beirut, Jeddah and
Dubai and was so amazed at
the warm reception I received
at organized events. I must
have signed over 300 shoes in
Beirut!
It is amazing to see how a
shoe can command such an
audience and it is through my
travels and my experiences
visiting shops and clients that
I gain much of my inspiration.
LOUBOUTIN FACTS When Louboutin was 13, he
and his friends would sneak out of school to go to Le Palace, a Paris nightclub, but while his mates looked at the girls on stage, he just looked at their shoes.
He never went to fashion or design school and instead got his training working for, among others, Charles Jourdan, Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent.
He once decided to miss a flight back to Paris from America so he could spend two more hours in a department store autographing his shoes.
An independent ratings company Luxury Institute, has named Christian Louboutin as the most desirable shoe brand in the world for the past three years.
Louboutin is also a landscape artist, trapeze artist (he has a swing in his studio) and, occasionally, tap dancing. He recently made a film of himself tap dancing for Simon Fuller’s fashion website, Fashionair.
TRAVELLING CIRCUSLouboutin Le Carrosse Noir (French for “The Black Carriage”) is a fantasy mobile shoe store that he thinks of as “a travelling circus.” Cinematic is it not? So much so that, Louboutin decided to film it, enlisting Benôit Tételin to direct. The series features three young women—Caroline Cottier as Jessyca, Marie-Astrid Jamois as Claudine, and Tatiana Séguin as Joséphine, known as ‘Loubi’s Angels’ (in reference to the classic American show)— dressed in Louboutins and in costumes by Roland Mouret and Martin Grant. The narrative focuses on their journey in Le Carrosse Noir en route to Cannes for a special performance, and the crazy characters and situations they encounter along the way.
28
You were even offered a job
with a major fashion label?
As I mentioned earlier, I really
like the way the company is
working now and I cherish
being the master of its destiny.
When you are designing
shoes for Barbie, what are
you thinking? And, did you
actually ask the makers
to make Barbie’s leg’s look
thinner before you signed the
deal?
Barbie is an icon; how could
I resist such a collaboration?
I made a comment about
the doll in passing and the
controversy was unreal! I had
protests outside of my stores.
What does a shoe mean to
you? Do you judge a woman
by her shoes?
I have the advantage as
a designer for having two
viewpoints. I have a very
feminine mentality because
I was raised by women so I
know how women think, how
they feel when they wear a
piece of clothing that satisfies
them. I also have a completely
masculine side so I never lost
the man’s perspective.
So if you were not
designing shoes, you’d be
a trapeze artist, landscape
gardener, an antique
hunter… are we forgetting
something…ah yes tap
dancing?
Yes (laughs). I was
actually looking for
antiques while in Beirut.
Unfortunately I didn’t
find anything.
How was the Le Carrosse Noir
experience at Cannes? How
did the caravan start rolling?
Le Carosse Noir was amazing!
Cannes was all abuzz about
it and we did performances
everyday with a MC and my
3 dancers which are really
amazing. You can see them
online in the web installments
that we are doing about
the Carrosse Noir’s trip. I
have always been a fan of
showgirls and now I have my
3 Loubi’s Angels who perform
with me. It was something fun
to add to the environment.
You have been on your toes,
opening boutiques across
the Middle East. Given the
economic slowdown, is
anyone going to spend a
‘small fortune’ on a pair of
Louboutins?
Well, from what we’ve seen
so far, yes! The response has
been amazing and the reason
Middle East expansion has
been in our plans for so long
is because of the desire.
Clients shopping in London,
Paris and New York have
been
asking me when I am going
to open in the Middle
East and it was
about time.
Jennifer Lopez
once told
Harper’s Bazaar
magazine that
Louboutin’s shoes “kill
you. But they’re the sexiest
shoes around.” Really? Your
advice to women who want to
own a pair of Louboutins…
Jennifer did a song about my
shoes. Anything you wear
should make you feel better,
sexier, happier. My shoes
resonate with women all over
the world for many different
reasons but I am so fortunate
and thankful to have them as
clients
THE RED SOLE STORYOne of the most intriguing parts of the Louboutin story is the origin of the infamous red soles. Although the actual story varies slightly depending on the source, most versions go something like this: When Louboutin was working on a prototype, he felt like something essential was missing. He saw his assistant applying a scarlet nail polish and impulsively grabbed it and used it to paint the soles of the shoes. “I did not really choose the red sole. It’s more like the red sole came to me and had to stay with me. Thank God I had this girl with me who was painting her nails. I grabbed her nailpolish (thank you to Chanel for that) and painted the sole.” The rest, of course, is history! His red soled shoes were such a rage that they encountered a spate of random plagiarism. So much so that they were officially trademarked in January 2008 to discourage imitations.

The image of Baghdad in
the early 21st century
is that of a deeply
dysfunctional city,
scarred by violence.
Bombs, bulldozers and
razor wire have torn
the fabric of the city.
The National Museum,
looted in the immediate
aftermath of the US and
Allied Forces takeover,
remains closed except for approved visitors; the National Library
was burnt and many other cultural institutions are damaged
and shut down. Some observers see signs of improvement – the
death toll from violent attacks is certainly down in comparison
to previous years, and there is some semblance of normality –
but Baghdad does not look likely to figure as a ‘capital of culture’
in the near future.
Yet this is what Baghdad was. The foremost city of the Arab
world, Baghdad in the early fifties was a cosmopolitan hub with
a vibrant artistic and cultural life. Several associations of artists
competed, debated and exhibited together. There were regular
exhibitions, sponsorship, scholarships and commissions from a
government keen to sustain the cultural capital, as well as an
appreciative audience for fine art, poetry and music.
One of the most admired artists at that time was Jewad Selim,
whose work was rare in that it had found recognition abroad
and was shown and sold in Britain and the US. Lorna Selim, his
wife and fellow artist, described the Baghdad of that era as a
“Wonderfully free and tolerant climate without sectarianism,
racism and factional fighting”. After his early death in 1961,
Selim came to epitomise the modern artist of Iraq.
Iraq was then a relatively new nation state. It had been carved
from the dying Ottoman Empire by the British, who were granted
a League of Nations mandate for Iraq in 1920. Pledging to
prepare the country for independence (which followed in 1932),
Britain installed the Hashemite Arab, Faisal, as king, in the hope
that he would be acceptable to the heterogeneous population.
Faisal I promoted pan-Arabic nationalism and encouraged
the cosmopolitan atmosphere in the capital. However, the
Hashemite dynasty was overthrown in 1958 and after various
upheavals, Saddam Hussein took control in 1979.
The effect of Ba’ath rule on Iraq’s cultural life was stifling,
as artists were increasingly expected to glorify the regime
while dissent was punished. In 2004, the interim government
instigated the restoration of Selim’s most famous work, the
Monument for Liberty. Public works minister Nisrin Mustafa
al-Barwari used the occasion to connect the new post-Saddam
era with Baghdad’s best known artists, saying, “Only by culture
can we help people return to their humanist roots which were
destroyed by Saddam Hussein and his dictatorship,” and she
stressed that Selim himself was remembered with nostalgia,
“because he reminds us of the good part of Iraqi history, the
potential for Iraqis, and the wealth of art and culture that exists
in Iraq”.
Jewad Selim owed his rise to fame as an international artist to a
number of factors. Firstly, he came from a highly creative family
– both his siblings also became notable artists. Born in 1919,
Selim grew up in the British Mandate period and subsequently
benefited from the scholarships the government made available
for studies abroad. As a very young man he was able to visit
Europe and studied in Rome, Berlin, Paris and London. His
diaries, with entries in four European languages, demonstrate
a keen interest in the life and culture of these cities. He went
to the museums, saw exhibitions and generally sharpened
his perceptions. When the Second World War broke out, he
returned to Baghdad and began to teach in the newly created
art school headed by Faiq Hassan, where he set up the sculpture
department, as well as doing part-time work in the Baghdad
Archaeological Museum (which became the National Museum
of Iraq). The Iraqi Department of Antiquities was conducting its
own excavations at the time and the museum was being filled
32
with Mesopotamian artefacts.
In the climate of burgeoning
nationalism, such excavations
were highly significant
since they showed the great
historical depth of civilisation
on Iraqi soil, instilling a sense
of national pride to which
Selim was also susceptible.
Some of the foreign soldiers
stationed in Baghdad
happened to be artists;
they were passionate about
modern painting, and argued
for a freer more spontaneous
mode of expression. It was
during these discussions that
a new interest in modernism
was instilled in Selim, which
deepened during his second
prolonged stay in Europe,
again funded by a government
scholarship.
From 1946-1949 he studied in
London at the Slade School
of Art, which was still fairly
conventional at the time,
though he vividly remembered
Henry Moore’s occasional
tutorials.
He was also intensely
stimulated by exhibitions of
modern art, notably the great
Picasso-Matisse show, and by
looking at ancient art in the
British Museum, and African
sculpture at the Horniman.
He also met his future wife,
Lorna, in London, a fellow
artist whose intelligence
and companionship were to
provide a constant support for
the rest of his life.
Back in Baghdad in the early
fifties, where Lorna joined
him, he threw himself into
the vibrant art scene. He
was first involved in the
formation of an art society,
‘The Pioneers’, who advocated
painting the real life of Iraqi
towns and villages, working
outdoors and experimenting
with various styles such as
Expressionism and Cubism.
In 1951 he helped set up the
Baghdad Modern Art Group.
He focused on painting during
this period, which saw him
preoccupied with debating
what form contemporary
Iraqi art should take. He saw
it springing from ancient
wells, such as those of the
Sumerians, Babylonians
and Assyrians, as well as
from Islamic sources, but he
responded also to the lives
and settings of modern 20th
century Iraqi men and women
and the whole apparatus of
thought and practice of the
international art scene.
In 1951, the Modern Art
Group held its inaugural
exhibition in the Museum of
Ancient Costumes, where
this quest for an authentic
modern Iraqi art was formally
proclaimed. In the same year
Selim participated in an
international exhibition, The
Unknown Political Prisoner.
His abstract sculpture won
an award and was exhibited
at the Tate Gallery among
80 works chosen from 3,500
entries. A tour of the United
States in 1954 confirmed his
status as an internationally
successful artist.
On his return, the social
backwardness and creeping
political oppression were
felt more keenly, although
Selim would channel his
anger into his work, now
primarily sculpture rather
than painting. He used stone
and wood, since there were
no facilities for large works
and casting. The 1954 wooden
sculpture, Mother and Child,
an abstract, to be offered in
Bonhams Dubai Sale, reflects
this period. A photo for Iraq
Petroleum shows Selim with
the sculpture in a garden in
Waziriya, a north Baghdad
suburb – the last time it was
exhibited.
The revolution of July 1958
promised a new beginning,
an Iraq free from foreign
domination, and Selim

responded with enthusiasm
to the government’s wish to
mark the occasion through
the commissioning of public
sculpture. The Monument for
Liberty in Tahrir Square is
often seen as the pinnacle
of his achievement as an
artist. It also cost him his
life, since the short deadline
given overtaxed his strength
and he suffered a heart
attack before the work was
completely installed. The
large bronze relief sculptures,
unfortunately mounted
awkwardly high above the
square, make reference to
the narrative sequences of
Sumerian votive plaques
which used to adorn ancient
temples, the dynamism of
Assyrian reliefs, as well
the reality of ordinary
Iraqi people. However, all
his work shows a special
talent and a very personal
language, rooted in the
understanding of the longue
durée of Mesopotamian
culture and committed to
modernism’s insistence on
truth and integrity, devoid
of sentimentality and empty
formalism

The first rays
of the sun are
kissing the
snow-covered
Alps and the
sky is shyly shedding its grey
to don the bright blue mantle
of the day. The mountains are
high enough for you to look
down at fluffy white clouds
floating away in the pristine
Alpine breeze. Underneath
your feet is freshly fallen
snow. There is no path for
you to ski down and it is up
to you to chart one through
it. With one strong stroke of
the ski poles off you go down
the slope weaving yourself a
path through the virgin snow,
revelling in the thrill of a run,
fascinated by the unknown,
allowing the adrenaline
rush to take over. Sounds
impressive, does it not?
Welcome to the world of
Joakim Klingefjord.
For Klingefjord, who is the
CEO of Renna (a mobile
company), perhaps the only
thing that outdoes negotiating
the twists and turns of a
boardroom is his passion for
skiing. Klingefjord’s zeal for
skiing can be traced back
to his roots in North Europe
where skiing is a favourite
pastime for most people. Like
most north Europeans for
whom skiing is a part and
parcel of their life, Klingefjord
began to ski as a teenager
and has never stopped
charting ski slopes since then.
It is no wonder then, that y g p y), p p y ,
36
Klingefjord, who has been in
Oman for more than a year
now, misses the snow and
takes breaks in between his
demanding job to indulge in
his passion. He often goes
skiing for around 20 days of
the year and has done some
2000-3000 ski runs till today.
“For ski lovers, the ultimate
experience comes from trying
out an unknown slope. This
is where you come face to
face with untouched nature
and get such strong feelings
of awe, fascination and fear,”
he says and adds that only a
few places around the world
offer off-piste skiing (skiing
away from controlled ski trails
and slopes) and Rifugio Di
Guglielmina in Gressony di
Trinity in northern Italy is one
of them.
“Rifugio Di Guglielmina is a
ski resort for the most diehard
ski enthusiasts, because it
offers you the ultimate in the
thrills and chills. To begin
with, you have to ski down
to the place with your entire
luggage, and then you need
to sleep with your clothes
on. In addition, there are no
lights as well. So you really
need to brave the harshest of
weathers in order to derive
the real thrills of skiing in this
place,” Klingefjord says while
mentioning that this has been
one of his most memorable
experiences ever.
Klingefjord’s passion for
skiing is evident in the
animated explanations he
gives while talking about the
sport and his trips to various
countries and mountains.
(So much so that you’d want
put on a pair of skis and
attempt a Figure Eight across
the nearest stretch of snow,
whether you know how to
or not!) Besides Rifugio Di
Guglielmina, which he rates
at the top of his list, the 45-
year-old CEO has skied in
varied terrains and places.
Les Arcs ski resort located
in Savoie, France, in the
Tarentaise Valley town of
Bourg-Saint-Maurice is
another place that Klingefjord
considers ideal for off-
piste skiing. According to
Klingefjord, since Les Arcs
is fairly dense, off-piste
opportunities are numerous.
The highest point Klingefjord
has skied from is around
3000m in the mountains
of Bariloche, in the Andes
Mountains between Argentina
and Chile. Jackson Hole, a
valley located in the west-
central US state of Wyoming,
and The Aosta Valley in
Italy are some of the other
destinations that he has
enjoyed skiing in. Besides
these, Klingefjord has also
skied in the town described
as ‘the death-sport capital of
the world’, because of its lure
for the more extreme variants
of outdoor activity. The place
is Chamonix, the oldest ski
resort in France.
In France, he also did runs
at Courchevel – another ski
area located in the Tarentaise
Valley – and known to be
the largest linked ski area
in the world. Galdhøpiggen
(Galdhø Peak in English), the
highest mountain in Norway,
Scandinavia and Northern
Europe, his homeland, is
another place where he
has spent some quality ski
weekends. Other countries
that Klingefjord has skied
in include Spain, Sweden,
Norway, Turkey, Switzerland,
Austria and Germany. He has
even done Ski Dubai to boot,
just for the heck of it, we are
told.
“The joy is not just in donning
the skis and arming yourself
with the ski poles. It digs
deeper than the snow so to
speak,” says Klingefjord.
“It is about the beautiful
surroundings, about having
lunch with your friends in the
snow and about the way you
enjoy the whole experience.
You need to clear your mind
to enjoy the run. And the
greatest feeling comes when
you are on an untouched
slope. Every skier’s wish and
challenge is ‘first in last out’
in such areas.” Of course,
Klingefjord has been lucky
enough to have avoided
any natural disasters (read
avalanches) so far.
One has to be physically fit
to do the runs and Klingefjord
manages that by going for a
good run every morning. And

But more than the physical
part, he emphasises, skiing
is about enjoying nature, the
snow and the mountains.
Evidently, this love of snow
runs deep in the family.
Klingefjord’s four children
(aged between 5-13) are
already taking their first
steps, following their father.
His eldest son recently
managed to do the back
flip jump into the water in
ski jumping. This is a major
achievement for any kid and
papa Klingefjord beams with
pride as he shows us a video
of his son in action.
“It is easier to plan a
vacation when you have the
whole family sharing the
same passion,” explains
Klingefjord. And it is so much
more satisfying when you can
discuss about slopes, runs
and areas over a cozy dinner
with your loved ones, he says.
“Once you learn how to ski,
you will never want to leave
it,” adds Klingefjord as a

AN EGYPTIANSOJOURN

Alexandria, Egypt, is a must-see for anyone with a penchant for history and travel,
says Marie-Claire
TRAVEL
39
When you get an opportunity to fly
business class to Alexandria, it
seems churlish to refuse. Especially
when you add to the experience, a
two-night stay in the Four Seasons
Hotel at San Stefano. So, I packed my
bags and headed off to sample the
magic of Alexandria.
Comprising 118 rooms and suites, including the Royal Suite that
takes up the entire 18th floor of the hotel and four Presidential Suites on the
19th floor, it is without a doubt Alex’s premier hotel.
Decorated in a classic French design, with a fresh palette of yellows, blues
and white, my room offered a breath-taking view from the balcony, overlooking
the hotel’s circular infinity pool.
40
bathroom, I was ready to
sample the culinary delights
of the hotel’s Lebanese
restaurant, Byblos, where
guests can choose to
dine under an impressive
chandelier by the fireplace
or outside on the terrace
overlooking the sea. Dinner
was followed by cocktails on
the terrace of the Bleu Bar
after which it was time for a
blissfully comfortable night
of sleep.
There’s something about
waking up in lavish
surroundings that makes
you feel more refreshed than
usual and after an energising
shower it was time to head
down for breakfast at Kala,
the hotel’s Mediterranean
restaurant. Large, airy and
spacious with a breathtaking
view overlooking the ocean,
you could be forgiven for
thinking you’d walked into
a magnificent 18th century
French Riviera seaside resort,
with its blue and white decor
and majestic floor-to-ceiling
windows. It would be hard to
imagine a more idyllic setting.
With a vast array of
everything you could possibly
want for breakfast, I decided
that my surroundings inspired
me to tuck into freshly baked
pain-au-chocolat decadently
dipped into rich and creamy
hot chocolate.
Sated and fortified, it was time
to explore Alexandria and find
out more about the history
of this city that was once the
intellectual centre of the world
and Egypt’s capital for almost
a thousand years, until the
Muslim conquest of Egypt in
641 AD. There is so much to
see that it’s hard to decide
TRAVEL
what to visit, but our first stop
was the Catacombs of Kom
Shouqafa. Discovered in 1900,
the burial site dates back to
the second century AD and
runs three storeys down into
the earth. Eerie and slightly
claustrophobic the deeper
into the sandstone excavation
you go, it is nonetheless a
fascinating window into how
the ancient civilisation buried
its dead and you can almost
feel the spirits of the deceased
looking over you as you learn
more about them.
Next it was on to Pompey’s
Pillar, a 20.48 metre tall pillar
built from a single piece of
granite. Originally thought
to mark the burial place
of Pompey, it was actually
built amidst the ruins of the
Serapium in 297 AD, in honour
of Emperor Diocletian’s victory
over the Alexandrian revolt.
Moving on to the surprisingly
well preserved Roman
Amphitheatre of Kom Al-
Dikka, I learned that it was the
only one of its kind in Egypt.
With its marble 12 tier seating,
mosaic floors and granite
columns, you could almost
picture what it must have
been like back in the second
century.
Our last stop of the morning
brought us to the Fort of
Qaitbey, an imposing fortress
built in 1480 by Sultan Qaitbey
on the sight of the Pharos
Lighthouse, one of the seven
ancient wonders of the world.
An impressive masterpiece
of design, the fort was built to
defend the city from sea-faring
crusaders and comprises
42
some clever designs to make
life as uncomfortable for the
enemy as possible, including
the ingeniously simple idea of
making the rise of the stairs
in the main fort increasingly
higher with each step,
resulting in a very tired and
out-of-breath attacker by the
time he reaches the top – and
I can personally attest to the
effectiveness! The fort also
houses the Naval Museum
which contains artefacts from
both Roman and Napoleonic
sea battles.
Feeling very cultured indeed,
it was time to return to the
hotel for a delicious and lazy
lunch of fresh seafood and
tender steak around the pool
before heading back to visit
the Bibliotheca Alexandrina,
built near the famed site of the
ancient library of Alexandria.
The elven-storey cylindrical
shaped building, opened in
2002, is home to over eight
million books and houses
three museums and five
specialised research institutes
as well as an art collection
that includes Hellenic
statues and centuries-old
manuscripts. Many an hour
can be lost in its treasures
but a word of advice; be sure
to keep your wallet or purse
in your pocket when you visit
as handbags are not allowed
inside, leaving you with no
means to pay for anything in
the souvenir shops.
Returning to the Four Seasons,
there was just time for a quick
nap before getting ready and
heading down to the hotel’s

Wanting to see a little of
Alexandria’s night life before
returning to Bahrain the next
day, we decided to head 30
minutes out from the hotel
to Panayotis, a very trendy
outdoor nightclub on the
outskirts of town. With its
pulsating blend of Latino,
Arabic and Dance music,
accompanied to a live electric
violinist, the club is terraced
with sunken water features
between the levels and was
a great choice for a fabulous
night out on the town.
An hour long Swedish

The
purchase
of a luxury
watch such
as an A.
Lange &
Söhne is a solid investment
and constitutes a long-term
relationship with a reliable
companion; a companion that
will last many lifetimes when
taken care of correctly.
The most delicate part of the
watch is not only the complex
movement with its hundreds
of parts, but also the case, so
is recommended to place the
watch – with the dial side up –
on a soft surface when it is not
on the wrist.
If a watch is worn in a hot
climate, it is important not
to expose it to the blazing
sun for long periods of time,
as heat can accelerate the
evaporation of the oil inside
the movement. On the other
hand, extreme cold may also
have a negative impact on
the viscosity of the lubricants.
A watch, like most human
beings, is best kept at
moderate temperatures.
For a watch with hand-
wound movement, it is
advisable to wind it regularly.
Also, although the watch
is equipped with a shock-
absorber, it is best to protect
it from blows. This brings us
to question if a mechanical
watch can be worn during
sporting or other such
activities - the answer is,
yes, it can. All A. Lange &
Söhne watches undergo the
“hammer test”, whereby
the watch is subjected to a
standardised hammer blow
that is the equivalent of a fall
from a height of one metre
onto a hard wooden floor. In
the course of the test, the parts
must withstand sudden stress
equivalent to 5,000 times
their own weight, an amount
of energy that will never be
sustained during a game of
golf or tennis.
For complicated watches
like perpetual or annual
calendars, there may be
certain times when the
correctors should not be
operated. As a general rule
for all watches with a date
mechanism, one should not
push the date corrector around
midnight. The best way to
avoid mechanical conflicts is
to follow the directions in the
operating manual.
However carefully a watch
is treated, from time to time
it needs to be serviced. As
a general rule, every three
(when worn regularly) to five
years (when only worn once
in while) the watch should be
handed in for inspection. It is
simply unavoidable that in the
course of time the oil inside
the movement dries up which
leads to more friction and, as
consequence, to increased yet
very standard wear and tear.
Decreasing rate accuracy is
always a sign that it is time
for the watch to be serviced.
It is advisable for the watch
to be taken to an authorised
dealer only, who will either
have the watch serviced
in-house by a trained
watchmaker, or send the
watch to the nearest Lange
Service Centre or to the Lange
Headquarters in Germany.
This guarantees that the
watch receives a full-service,

47
in accordance with the strict
quality standards.
During routine servicing,
the watch undergoes optical
control testing, which includes
a close examination of the
exterior and the movement
through the sapphire
caseback. Testing the watch
for water resistance is another
part of the initial analysis.
Every movement is then
completely dismantled. After
the parts have been cleaned
in an ultrasonic bath, the
service watchmaker tries to
detect any signs of wear on
them. If necessary, worn parts
are replaced by new ones.
Subsequently, the movement
is lubricated, re-assembled
and regulated. Special
attention is paid to ensure the
position of index is precisely
centred between the two arms
of the precision whiplash
index adjuster. Before the
movement is re-encased, the
case is equipped with new
gaskets, following which it
undergoes another water
resistance test. The case
and the buckle are then
refurbished by polishing
away minor scratches. Major
scratches are eliminated by
means of laser welding. At the
end, the service watchmaker
rechecks the accuracy of the
watch over the course of a test
run for a few days on a motion
simulator.
Rigorous efforts are taken by
watchmakers to ensure that
when the watch is finally
returned to its owner, the
engineering and performance
qualities of each timepiece
are safeguarded

bracelet, ring and a pair of earrings. The name was first applied in the 17th century
although the fashion of matching suites of jewellery
extends to over 5,000 years, to Ancient Egypt and Rome, where
women adorned themselves with sets of jewellery.

THE MODERN TOUCHWith a completely new design, a more efficient and high-tech engine and comprehensive safety features, the all new Cadillac SRX crossover is top of the tops. A Signature Report
CARS
Despite the retro trend that
has seen the revival of
numerous iconic designs,
Cadillac has pressed
ahead with its new design
philosophy for the 21st century
called ‘art and science’,
which it says, “incorporates
sharp, sheer forms and crisp
edges — a form vocabulary
that expresses bold, high-
technology design and
invokes the technology used
to design it.” This new design
language has, over the years,
spread from the original CTS
across the line all the way up
to the XLR roadster and has
since become iconic of all
Cadillacs.
A multi-piece shield grille
and Cadillac’s iconic vertical
headlamps – with light pipe
technology and available
adaptive forward lighting –
make up the face of the new,
soon to be released, 2010
SRX. They blend into a tightly
wrapped, sweeping body that
tapers downward at the rear,
giving the vehicle a sporty
profile. The SRX has a wide
stance, minimal overhang
and wheels pushed to corners.
Eighteen-inch wheels are
standard and 20-inch wheels
are offered. A bold accent line
dives across the body side and
culminates at a chrome front
fender vent that incorporates
a side marker lamp. An
integrated spoiler on the
rear-ward edge of the roof
extends the sleek lines and
improves aerodynamics. It is
a thoroughly modern design
that is true to the company’s
design philosophy.
The interior is like the
second side of the same coin,
matching the exterior in its
look and feel and creating
an aura of modernity and
technology with a touch of
old-world craftsmanship.
Hand-cut-and-sewn coverings
on the instrument panel and
ambient lighting details
convey a finely tailored
cabin. The sunroof, one of the
largest in the segment, covers
70 per cent of the roof of the
61
vehicle giving passengers a
unique feeling of openness
and freedom. An integrated
centre stack houses controls
for climate and audio systems,
while the navigation system
rises from the centre of the
instrument panel. A signature
example of the SRX’s attention
to detail is the Cadillac script
logos in the front door sill
plates that illuminate when
the doors are opened.
Inside, technology can be
found in abundance. Aside
from the aforementioned “pop-
up” navigation screen with
three-dimensional imaging,
and adaptive forward
lighting, the SRX also has USB
connectivity and 40 GB hard
drive, Bluetooth connectivity
(with NAV), power liftgate with
adjustable height setting,
keyless entry, passive push
button start and adaptive
remote start and a dual-screen
system for rear entertainment.
At the heart of the SRX is
a new, fuel-efficient direct
injected 3.0L V-6 that delivers
an estimated 265 hp and
is paired with a six-speed
automatic transmission.
Direct injection results in more
power, better fuel efficiency
and lower emissions, all
in a smaller-displacement
package. As a result, the
new V-6 engine is expected
to raise the SRX’s standard
power rating by 5 hp, while
achieving an estimated 10
per cent – 15 per cent fuel
efficiency improvement.
The 3.0L direct injection
V-6 is named as one of the
world’s 10 Best Engines for
2009 by Ward’s Automotive.
Along with direct injection
technology, the 3.0L engine
employs variable valve
timing to optimize power and
fuel efficiency and reduce
emissions.
The Hydra-Matic 6T70 six-
speed automatic transmission
helps save fuel by lowering
the engine’s rpm at constant
highway speeds, while
manual shift control enables
greater driver interaction
when desired. Traction
control is taken a step further
on AWD models with the rear
eLSD (Electronic Limited Slip
Differential System). In wet
conditions, the system can
transfer up to 100 per cent of
torque to the wheel that has
more grip. The eLSD also
gives the driver enhanced
control when cornering hard
or completing a high-speed
manoeuvre, such as a lane
change, by momentarily
applying more or less torque
to either of the wheels to help
the rear of the vehicle more
closely follow the direction of
the front wheels. In addition to
this the suspension includes
a real-time damping system
in conjunction with AWD that
adjusts shock damping rates
in response to road conditions
for a smooth ride quality.
SRX’s safety features are
designed to protect occupants
before, during and after a
crash. A strong body structure
and chassis that absorbs crash
energy is complemented by the
use of martensitic steel in the
fully enclosed rocker sections.
Martensitic steel is one of the
strongest available and its use
in the rockers helps protect
against intrusion during a
side-impact crash, while also
maintaining the structure
during front and rear crashes.
Additional safety features
include standard head curtain
side air bags, standard front
seat-mounted pelvic/thorax
side air bags, front safety
belts with dual pretensioners
and load limiters, rollover
mitigation sensors, a pedal
release system, trailer
stability assist.
With a completely new design,
a more efficient and high-tech
engine and comprehensive
safety features, the 2010
Cadillac SRX promises you a
driving experience like none
other! And, to top it all, it also
delivers excellent utility and
top-notch creature comforts
that make this a set of luxury
wheels that you must
possess!
All Cadillac models sold in the Middle East come with a free service and maintenance
package for 4 years or 100,000 km (whichever comes first),
in addition to around the clock roadside assistance and General
Motors’ patented bumper-to-bumper warranty. This unsurpassed care package
offers Cadillac customers an unparalleled sense of security and
total peace of mind, enhancing the overall Cadillac experience. In Oman, OTE Group is the exclusive
dealer for Cadillac

We all love an iPod. After all,
it has revolutionised the way
people enjoy their music on
the go. And, as if they weren’t
good enough already, Apple
has decided to revise nearly
the entire line-up of the iPod
range, making them all-
the-more user friendly and
technologically advanced.
The one to receive the largest overhaul
is easily the nano. It has now dumped
the traditional control scheme in
favour of Apple’s Multi-Touch interface.
This lets users navigate their music
collection by simply tapping or swiping
a finger on the display. The new player
features a polished aluminum and glass
enclosure with a built-in clip, making it
instantly wearable. Like the shuffle, the
new nano features Genius Mixes and,
in addition, also has a built-in FM radio
and up to 24 hours of music playback on
a single battery charge. The amazing
new design is nearly half the size and
weight of its predecessor, making the
new ultra-portable iPod nano nearly as
small as the new shuffle and is a natural
workout companion. The nano will be
available in two models, an 8GB and a
16GB model, and in six colours - silver,
graphite, blue, green, orange and pink.
We Dig: The Multi-Touch interface, not to mention the nano size!

THE NANO
63
The smallest and most portable model of
the iPod range, the shuffle now features
both clickable ‘ring’ buttons and Apple’s
innovative VoiceOver technology. The
new feature is activated by a button on
top of iPod and allows users to hear the
name of the currently playing song and to
switch between songs, playlists or Genius
Mixes. To make life easier, the clickable
buttons make the new iPod shuffle even
simpler to use. Press the centre button to
play and pause, press the outer buttons
to skip forward and back or adjust the
volume up and down. It even speaks in 25
different languages and alerts users when
their battery needs charging. With nearly
50 per cent more battery life, it is capable
of over 15 hours of music playback on a
single battery charge. The new wearable
iPod shuffle also has an all-aluminium
enclosure with a built-in clip and will
come in five brilliant colours—silver, blue,
green, orange and pink.
We Dig: The innovative VoiceOver technology.
Packed with incredible new features
including Apple’s stunning Retina
display, FaceTime video calling, HD
video recording, Apple’s A4 chip, 3-axis
gyro, iOS 4.1 and Game Center, it is the
thinnest and lightest iPod touch ever.
And as it seems, even the most efficient
ever with up to 40 hours of music
playback and seven hours of video
playback on a single battery charge.
Apple’s stunning Retina display, first
seen on the iPhone 4 a few months
back, makes everything on iPod touch
look even more incredible, whether
playing games, watching video,
browsing the web or flicking through
photos. With the new front-facing
camera and mic, iPod touch users can
make FaceTime video calls over Wi-Fi
with other new iPod touch or iPhone 4
users to easily see what their friends
are up to, share important moments like
the first day of school and even show
others what they are seeing by easily
switching to the rear-facing camera.
