Welcome, Rural Physician Leadership Program Class of 2021Submitted by Rebecca Todd, MD

The Rural Physician Leadership Program is proud to introduce the Class of 2021. These 10 students have completed two years of medical school in Lexington at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. They will now participate in two years of clinical training based in Morehead with St. Claire HealthCare.

RPLP has been incredibly successful since its launch in 2008. Of the 19 graduates who are currently in medical practice, 84% work in rural Kentucky. Over 60 students have graduated in the past eight years (over 40 of them are still in residency training) and have entered 14 different specialties including Pediatrics, Family Medicine, and Internal Medicine.

The strengths of RPLP are the community engagement opportunities, one-on-one interactions with physician faculty members, and the close-knit small town atmosphere. RPLP hosted its annual Community Ties luncheon on Friday, June 28 to encourage interactions between medical students and local community members including Morehead Mayor Laura White-Brown, Rowan County Judge Executive Harry Clark, MSU Professor John Nelson, and St. Claire HealthCare Educational Liaison Greg Bausch.

Please join us in welcoming our new medical students!

Members of the Class of 2010 are pictured above. Back, L-R: Jonathan Bach (Jackson, KY), Neil Horsley (Lexington, KY), Jeremy Miller (Chantilly, VA), and Matthew Hudson (South Shore, KY).

St. Claire HealthCare Welcomes New Staff

Under the organization of Jacob Meece (UKCOM Class of 2020), fourth‐year medical students from the Rural Physician Leadership Program participated in Stop the Bleed training. This program is a national awareness campaign intended to encourage community members to become trained and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency. Jacob is now an instructor for Stop the Bleed and has chosen this program as his senior community engagement project for medical school.

The Bath & Rowan Counties Chapter of Project Linus recently donated 10 handmade blankets to St. Claire Regional Medical Center. These blankets, lovingly handmade by volunteers known as "blanketeers," provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need.

Thank you, Project Linus
