as a young teacher, Fraser

drew wrote a letter to which

hemingway responded with un-

characteristic kindness, signing

a number of drew’s books.

hemingway then invited drew to

visit, and on april 8, 1955, one

year after hemingway won the

nobel Prize, they spent a long

afternoon discussing literature,

later recounted by drew in his

article “unedited notes on a

Visit to Finca Vigia” (in bruccoli,

Conversations With Ernest

Hemingway, 89-98). at the end

of drew’s visit hemingway said

“Let’s go up to the house and

sign those books of yours.”

hemingway inscribed all the

books drew had brought with

him and presented him with

many others from his own li-

books given to drew that day.

“The One Great Heart Which Beats For The Concerns And Misfortunes Of The World”

36. soLZhenitsYn, alexander. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. new York, 1963. octavo, original gray cloth, dust jacket. $12,000.

“the speech denouncing stalin at the 22nd communist Party congress in 1961 embold-ened solzhenitsyn to submit One Day for pub-lication to… the Moscow literary journal Novyi Mir. Premier nikita Khrushchev piloted a spe-cial resolution through the central committee authorizing its publication; it appeared in november 1962, and solzhenitsyn found him-self catapulted to literary fame by his first pub-lished work, not only for its intrinsic merits but for the very fact that the government was allow-ing fictional treatment of a formerly forbidden topic, life in stalin’s forced-labor camps” (terras, Handbook of Russian Literature, 437). the novel was based on solzhenitsyn’s eight-year incarceration in a Kazakhstan labor camp. it is the first and perhaps the best example of this nobel laureate’s belief in “the indivisibility of truth and ‘the perception of world literature as the one great heart which beats for the concerns and misfortunes of our world” (solzhenitsyn, nobel prize acceptance speech, 1970). about-fine.

“It Seems To Me That In America… The Leadership Of Progress Must Ultimately Rest”

44. WeLLs, h.g. The Future in America. London, 1906. octavo, original red cloth. $2500.

First edition of Wells’ travelogue about a visit to the United States, warmly inscribed to Richard Gregory: “To R.A.G. from H.G.W. with love.” “The Future in America was a great success, especially as Wells was so frank about problems in the united states. too wide a gap between the classes, and the overriding problem of racialism, as well as a sort of vulgarity seemed to inhibit progress, according to Wells” (smith, H.G. Wells, 103-04). scattered light foxing, original cloth with mild toning to spine, light expert restoration. extremely good.

gregory. the two met while students at the normal school of science in south Kensington. they jointly

authored a textbook, Honours Physiography, in 1891. reportedly, gregory was the one person with whom Wells

never quarreled. in Wells’ first work of fiction, he dedicated the work to gregory as his “dearest friend.” gregory

was a professor of astronomy, also possessing expertise in physics, chemistry and other disciplines. he wrote

several textbooks and eventually assumed the editorship of the journal Nature, to which Wells frequently con-

tributed. Wells often turned to gregory, and to the experts gregory contacted on Wells’ behalf, for insight and

encouragement when writing his famous “scientific romances.” after Wells’ death, gregory worked to establish

the h.g. Wells Memorial to preserve public attention to his friend’s body of work. throughout his life gregory

was a passionate advocate for science—“it is necessary to believe in the holiness of scientific work,” he once

declared—and “an optimist about man’s future” (horrabin, in New Scientist, april 11, 1957).

Signed limited first edition, one of 492 copies signed by Woolf in her characteristic purple ink.

Woolf’s compelling essay on women and writing has become a classic feminist text. her “aim was to establish a woman’s tradition, recognizable by its

circumstances, subject-matter, and its distinct problems… A Room of One’s Own charted this vast territory with an air of innocent discovery which itself sharpens the case against induced ineffectiveness and ignorance that for so long clouded the counter-history of women” (gordon, 182). “a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction,” said Woolf, “and that, as you will see, leaves the great problem of the true nature of woman and the true nature of fiction unsolved.” Printed

“I’ve No Idea Of Her Whereabouts. I Suspect She’s Somewhere In Europe…”

96. garbo, greta. Document signed. santa Monica, california, March 12, 1941. With: cuKor, george. Typed letter signed. august 1, 1969. two sheets (8-1/2 by 11 inches), printed and typed (in carbon) on rectos, custom portfolio. $5000.

Original document signed by Greta Garbo in 1941 modifying an existing contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures regarding her final film, the disastrous failure Two-Faced Woman, directed by George Cukor. Offered together with a later letter from Cukor discussing Garbo, referring to her as “our girlfriend,” hoping the recipient might be able to forward a release letter to her, so that she might permit footage from their 1936 movie Camille to be used in a biopic about Cukor.

the contract change proposed here is minor, but comes at a tremendously significant and fraught time for garbo. though it

does not name the film, this change almost certainly involves her contract to star in george cukor’s Two-Faced Woman, which came out late in 1941, an attempt to capital-ize on garbo’s comic success in her most recent film, 1939’s Ninotchka. in Two-Faced Woman she played a double role that fea-tured her dancing the rumba, swimming, and skiing. though the film performed rea-sonably well at the box office, it was a critical failure, and garbo later referred to the film as “my grave” (bainbridge, “the great garbo” in Life, 1955). cukor later said, “People often glibly say that the failure of Two-Faced Woman finished garbo’s career. that’s a grotesque oversimplification. it certainly threw her, but i think that what really happened was that she just gave up. she didn’t want to go on” (Paris, Garbo, 1994).
