Quality Assurance and Approvals

Rigorous testing and qualitycontrol throughout the entireproduction process ensuresthat PhonEX®AS pipes andfittings together build a highlyreliable and extremelyeffective low noise system.

They have the RAL – qualitymark of the GermanCommunity of Plastic Pipes(GKR), Bonn, and a general

building inspection approvalwith the approval number Z.-42.1-228 of the GermanInstitute for Building (DiBt).This also allows PhonEX®AS tobe used as main pipeline forunderground installations.

With its unsurpassed noiseinsulating characteristics,PhonEX®AS is the optimalsolution where noiseinsulation is required. Thepatented raw materialAstolan® has a high specificweight and special molecularstructure, which enablesabsorption of airborne soundas well as structure bornesound.

AirbornesoundSound which diffuses in theair. Occurs inside the pipedue to impact and flow noises.Sound energy is absorbed inthe pipe wall. PhonEX®ASpipe material providesexcellent airborne soundabsorbing behaviour, becauseof its high specific weight andspecial molecular structure.

Structure borne soundSound which diffuses in solidmaterials. Structure bornesound is created by theimpact of wastewater on thepipe wall, especially in verticalstacks in the area of bendsand branches. Structure borne

sound transmits from theshock or impact zone over thewhole pipe. Due tovibration of the pipeadditional airborne sounds aregenerated. The specialmolecular structure ofPhonEX®AS enables theabsorbtion of structure bornesound.

Noise Insulating Properties

The Weight per meter of PhonEX®ASThe weight per meter of a soiland waste system is of greatimportance in absorbingairborne and structure bornesounds. The combination ofhigh specific weight and lowelasticity gives the optimalresults in damping thetransmission of both soundsthrough a pipe system.PhonEX®AS is specificallydeveloped to make optimaluse of both properties andresulted in relative thick wallsand high specific materialweight. Therefore pipeweights should not be lessthan indicated in the followingtable:

The SonicBehaviour of PhonEX®ASPhonEX®AS is the modernalternative to cast iron. Incontrast to metallic materials,Astolan® displays a low levelof noise transmission. Soundenergy cannot spread over the pipe wall. The extremesound insulating behaviour of

PhonEX®AS has been provenin extensive comparativemeasurements at the Institutefor Sound and HeatProtection, Prof. Dr. Zeller,Essen, Germany.

Test results have confirmedthat PhonEX®AS gives anexcellent performancecompared to Cast Iron.

Handling & Storage

PackingPhonEX®AS pipes and fittingsare packed ready for transportin a customer friendly way.The packing guaranteesoptimal security, efficientstorage and easy handling.

Standard delivery unit forpipes is per pallet. It contains14 to 38 pipes depending onthe pipe diameter. Due to the

standardized 3 metre lengthof all pipes there is only onepallet type for each dimension(DN 56, DN 70, DN 100, DN 125, DN 150 and DN 200).This saves space in thewarehouse. Further, KE KELIToffers DN 90 (wall mounting)in 2 metre length. The pallets can be handledwith a forklift truck.

PhonEX®AS fittings are packedin practical carton box pallets.

TransportPhonEX®AS pipes – when nolonger packed in originalpallets – must lie fullysupported over their total

length during transport.Bending of the pipes shouldbe avoided. Impact stress onpipes and fittings must beprevented.

StorageIf stored correctly no lastingdeformations or damage topipes and fittings will occur.Factory bundled pipe palletscan be stacked.

The stack of loose pipesshould never be higher than1,5 metre. The elastomeric sealing ringsshould peferably not bestored in the open air.

Page 20: Silence is golden - KE · PDF fileNo improvisation or system change. Sound insulation without gaps. Magic ... Rigorous testing and quality control throughout the entire production

Sound insulationNational / Local buildingregulations should beobserved where applicable. In order to achieve optimalsound insulation it is highlyrecommended to implementthe following instructions. These instructions are basedon years of experience incompliance with strict and

clear German Standards andRegulations (eg DIN 4109 andDIN 1053).

Waste pipes should not beused in living, sleeping andworking rooms. Should thewaste pipe system be fixed onmassive walls adjacent toliving, sleeping and workingrooms, the specific areaweight of that wall should be

at least 220 kg/m2.

The same requirement alsoapplies when installed in ashaft and fixed on theintermediate wall. Shafts canbe closed with a minimum 1,5cm plaster layer on anappropriate support. ThePhonEX®AS pipe system mustbe free from the plaster layer, avoiding sound bridges.

It is recommended to wrap alayer of mineral wool aroundthe pipe, where contact withthe plaster layer cannot beavoided.

Recommendations

Emitted sounds depend highlyon the course of the pipe. The prevention or reductionof impact zones leads to lesssound emission. It istherefore recommended toprevent abrupt directionalchanges. Instead of installinga 90° elbow it is far better tochange the direction fromvertical to horizontal with two45° elbows, interconnected by

a short piece of straight pipewith a minimum length of 25 cm. For this purpose the45° long bend is included inthe PhonEX®AS program(see page 10).

For optimal sound insulation, use full encircling bracketswith inserts of corrugatedrubber.

Installation in concretePhonEX®AS pipes and fittingscan be casted in concrete.Thermal induced lateralmovements to be dealt with, according to previousinstructions. Pipes and fittingsmust be secured properly inorder to prevent lateralmovement during casting ofthe concrete. Close theannular gap between pipe andsocket with sealing tape toprevent ingres of mortar inthe sealing ring.

Roof drainage pipes Roof drainage pipes projectedthrough living, sleeping andworking rooms can beinstalled as pictured in figure 9.The specific area weight of thecasting should be at leastequal to the wall andpreferably for both at least220 kg/m2. Although theformation of condensation onthe outside of PhonEX®ASpipes is less than on metallicpipes, it is recommended toinsulate the pipes and fittings.

Installation in wallsIn case PhonEX®AS is to beinstalled against a wall withseparate decorative top layer(e.g. plaster boards), it isrequired that the brackets arefixed to the construction walland not to the decorative layer.Passing holes in the decorativelayer can be mended by usingelastic filler.

Recommendations

As long as stability and bearingcapacity are not impaired, it isallowed to cut shafts andchannels in brick work walls.External heating of PhonEX®ASpipes should be limited by heatinsulating the source;

eg central heating pipes as wellas hot tap water pipes.

Pipe and shaft dimensions to betaken from the table below andfigure 8.

Floor crossingsFloor crossings should bemade leak resistant and soundabsorbent. In the case of thefloor being concreted,PhonEX®AS pipes and fittingsshould be protected by usinga protection sleeve or heatinsulating wrapping material.

Recommendations

Pipe cuttingPhonEX®AS can be cut simplywith a commercial pipe cutteror saw. Always cut the pipestraight. Remove all swarf andburrs from the cut end andclean the pipe end. Bevelsharp cutting edge – do notchamfer! (figure 10)

For connections to socketedpipe systems with roll-rings,

the ends of the PhonEX®ASpipes must be chamfered.(Note: Does not apply forPVC-U fittings withelastomeric sealing ring aswell as PP pipes and fittings).

Joints with the compensator socketThe PhonEX®AS compensatorsocket is used to connect twopipes as well as a pipe andfitting where compensationfor axial movements isrequired. For conventionalplastic soil and waste pipesystems the expansion marginis created by marking andwithdrawing the pipe to the

expansion length. This is notrequired for PhonEX®AS, asthe compensator socketadapts to temperaturechanges in the system. Thisnot only saves working time, but also gives additionaltechnical security to thesystem.

Jointing

MountinginstructionsWhen making the connectionwith the compensator socketthe following instruction rulesshould be adhered to:- Clean pipe end.- Check the position and

condition of the elastomericsealing ring in the groove. Further check the condition of the elastomeric expansion collar. If necessary, clean fitting, sealing ring and collar.

- Push the expansion collar over the pipe end (1).ATTENTION: The expansioncollar may only be pushed over the plain pipe ends, never over the spigot end offittings.

- Apply KE KELIT lubricant* sparsely inside compensatorsocket of fitting (2).

- Apply and distribute KE KELIT lubricant* evenly on outside of elastomeric compensator collar (3).

- Push fitting over compensatorcollar to full insertion depth.Check final position of compensator collar** (4-6).

- Apply KE KELIT lubricant onthe next pipe end or spigot fitting and insert in the socket end to full depth.

*) Never use oil or grease**)Insertion depth for pipe with

collar into the compensator socket, see figure 11

Jointing

Joints without the compensatorsocketPush-fit joints between pipesof maximum 3 metre lengthsand fittings must be capable ofabsorbing lateral thermalexpansion of up to 10 mm.

In case no use is made of thecompensator socket, therequired lateral expansiontolerance can be created byinserting the pipe end to fulldepth and subsequentlywithdrawing the pipe end by10 mm. (figure 12).

Socket connections betweenfittings only, need noconsideration for lateralcompensation due totemperature differences andcan therefore be fully inserted.

Installation PhonEX®AS socketconnectionThe socket connection is tobe installed as follows:- Check the position and

condition of the elastomericsealing ring in the groove. If necessary, clean fitting and sealing ring.

- Clean pipe end or spigot fitting.

- Apply KE KELIT lubricant* ina thin and equal layer on pipe end.

- Insert pipe end straight to the central register of the socket.

- Withdraw pipe by 10 mm.– never the fitting –

*) Never use oil or grease

In case of vertical installationof pipes, the individual pipelengths must be fixedimmediately after assemblywith pipe brackets, in order toavoid the pipe from slidingdownwards and eliminatingthe 10 mm expansion /contraction allowance.

Making aconnection on analready installedpipeThis can easily be executedusing standard PhonEX®ASfittings.

Installation instructions usingdouble socketed sleeves:1. Cut out a sufficient length

of pipe (length of fitting plus 2,5x OD of pipe)

2. Cut required pass length3. Deburr and bevel cutting

edges.4. Slide branch or access pipe

on upper pipe end5. Fit one double socketed

sleeve, over its full length, on pass length

6. Fit one double socketed sleeve, over its full length, on lower pipe end

7. Fit in pass length and close the pipe by sliding the double socketed sleeves in position

8. Fix double socketed sleevesas pictured in figure 14.

Alternatively KE KELITcompression couplers orPhonEX®AS long socket (onlyDN 100) can also be used.

General instructionsIn principle PhonEX®AS soiland waste systems should beinstalled tension free and withfree lateral allowance fortemperature compensation.Use sound absorbingbrackets, dimensionallycompatible to the pipediameter. Recommended arescrew-pipe brackets with

inserts of corrugated rubber, which are fixed to the wall byscrews and plastic plugs*.

For pipe systems in whichinner-pressures can arise, the joints have to be securedto avoid them from slidingapart and deviating from thecentre axis.

The KE KELIT safety clips

prevent the joints from slidingapart. Alternatively thefixing brackets can bearranged appropriately.

*) Metal plugs can be used, but will lead to disadvantageous sound emission.

Fixing Technique

Fixing way: Fixed bracketThe fixed bracket creates afixed point in the pipesystem. With fixed bracketsthe pipe or fitting cannot bemoved through the bracketafter the screws are tightened(no longitudinal movement ispossible). In order to preventsliding down of the verticalstack, each individual pipelength must be secured onone point by a fixed bracket.Fittings or groups of fittingsmust always be shaped asfixed points.

Also every horizontallyinstalled pipe should alwaysbe fixed with one fixedbracket. All remaining pipe

brackets – in the vertical aswell as in the horizontalinstallation – must be slidingbrackets. The prescribedbracket distances should notbe exceeded.

Fixing way: Sliding bracketBy using sliding brackets thepipe can still be movedthrough the bracket after thescrews are tightened(longitudinal movement ispossible once installed).

25

Page 26: Silence is golden - KE · PDF fileNo improvisation or system change. Sound insulation without gaps. Magic ... Rigorous testing and quality control throughout the entire production

Fixing Technique

Arrangement of the bracketsDuring installation of PhonEX®

AS pipes, the following shouldbe considered:- In case of horizontal

installation, the pipe bracket distances 10X the outside diameter of the pipe. In case of vertical pipe installation, depending on outside diameter,

1-2 metre (1).- Generally pipe brackets

should not be installed in impact areas. (eg diameter reductions and changes of directions in the system).

- Pipe brackets to be fixed to building materials with highspecific area weight.

- For stack pipes in open mounting shafts and high rooms (storey height over

2,5 metres) it is advised to use one fixed bracket and one sliding bracket per pipelength.

- The fixed bracket must be installed directly above the fitting at the bottom of the pipe end. The sliding bracket must be installed at a distance of maximum of 2 metres above the fixed bracket .

- In multiple storey buildings (from 3 storeys and more) the stack pipes of DN 100 or bigger must be secured by additional fixing (stack pipe support) against sliding . In this case weadvise using the PhonEX®ASsocketed short length with a fixed bracket.Stack segments with fittings

or short pipes are to be secured in such short distances with pipe brackets, that they cannot slide apart.

In exceptional cases, whereconnecting elements otherthan the compensator socketare used (eg double socketedsleeve), per maximumallowable pipe length (3 metres), one fixed bracketand one sliding bracketshould be installed in linewith the illustrations and shown on this page of thismanual. The double socketedsleeves to be fixed.
