• Better understand the difference between “passive” and “active” listening, and the impacts of both.
• Identify techniques for developing and/or enhancing active listening skills.
• Identify strategies for “reframing the question/issue” in order to facilitate effective dialogue and collaboration.

Let’s Talk About Listening Skills

Listening ActivityGetting Ready (1 minute)• Turn to the person to your right (and introduce yourself if you
haven’t yet met) • Decide who will be the Speaker and who will be the Listener
for the purposes of this exercise.
Activity Instructions• Speakers, will share a peak experience - a positive and
memorable time in your life. You will have 2 minutes• Listeners will listen in silence – they will not engage in
dialogue or asking questions • Switch roles when instructed

In Summary• Listening is much more than hearing
• Listen to understand the content of what the other person is saying
• Non-verbal signals you send are important
• Be empathetic and validate feelings
• Know when to simply be silent and not say anything
• Know that you don’t have to have all the answers
• Reframe to shift a concept, idea or feeling from the negative to the positive
