School Entrance COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENT The idea of community is important in the best elementary school designs. Silver Crest’s exterior architecture was given a traditional look using gabled roofs and the stone base to fit into the new Herriman City Center and reflect the ambience of its community setting.

Herriman is a fast growing suburb of Salt Lake City, Silver Crest Elementary School is a key component in creating a strong sense of community for the surrounding, youth-oriented neighborhood.

While the school’s exterior finishes fit into its neighborhood vernacular, traditional elements such as the bell tower, suggest the important nature of education, and of learning.

Learning Community | LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Gathering spaces for group learning are provided throughout the building, creating a feeling of inclusion and community within the school. Small Learning Communities are the key to collaborative learning. Each Learning Community surrounds a central collaboration space where teachers can move lessons outside the confines of the classroom, participate in group activities, or just to get rid of the wiggles.

Transparency and visibility into and out of the classroom is important in creating a collaborative learning environment. Elementary School children can only sit in one place for so long, so collaboration spaces add flexibility and innovation to the teacher’s repertoire.

Media Center | LEARNING ENVIRONMENT The Media Center is more than just a library. It is a flexible learning space that can be used by teachers to facilitate a number of learning and teaching techniques. With transparent walls that connect interior spaces to circulation corridors, the space is organized to invite students in, and to convey feelings of inclusion, acceptance, and support.

Multi-Purpose Room | LEARNING ENVIRONMENT The daylit multi-purpose room is sized to accommodate two basketball courts for school and is suitable for athletic, community, and school-wide events. It also serves as a dining room supported by a full service kitchen. Plus, this portion of the school can be securely sectioned off for after school activities. From assemblies to special class activities to parent and family events, the multi-purpose room is a well-used, flexible, and exciting gathering space.

Exterior | PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT The roof pitch and building lines mirror the backdrop of the magnificent Wasatch Mountain range view that Herriman and the Silver Crest Elementary school enjoy. Earth tone colors in natural shades were selected to reflect the shared community values of love of nature and the outdoors.

Commons | PLANNING PROCESSThe second of a new 2-story prototype design for Jordan School District to accommodate a rapidly growing community, Silver Crest is built to last and to look great. Recent property value increases created the need for the District to fit a large elementary school on a site that uses the space as efficiently as possible. This 2-story school was more economical to build than the same size one-story school and has less roof to maintain.

In this value- and budget-conscious young community, the need for a solid neighborhood school on a small site and new part of town made planning simple. The architect worked with the District and a community planning committee to design a school that integrated tradition with the fresh vernacular of the new neighborhood it serves.
