WHAT IS VIRTUAL REALITY (VR)? Virtual reality is a complete immersion experience

that shuts out the physical world.

Using VR devices such as HTC Vive, Oculus Rift or

Google Cardboard, we can be transported into a

number of real-world and imagined environments

(e.g., Macchu Picchu, Taj Mahal, Louvre Museum, a

penguin colony, the back of a dragon, etc.)

In VR, we can feel as though we are truly part of those

worlds. We can even walk around and interact with the

objects in there.


WHAT IS AUGMENTED REALITY (AR)? Augmented reality places virtual objects into the world

around us often by using the camera on a smartphone.

AR alters the surrounding world so that we can interact

with objects, and walk around them without requiring

goggles.

In AR, we can still see the world around us, and it can

even be easier on our eyes compared to VR experiences.


WHAT IS MIXED REALITY (MR)? Mixed reality combines elements of both AR and VR where

the real-world and digital objects interact.

MR technology is just now starting to take off with Microsoft’s

HoloLens, one of the most notable early MR apparatuses.

Google Street View is a feature of Google Maps that

enables users to view and navigate through 360º

horizontal and 290º vertical panoramic street-level images

of various cities around the world.

The Street View feature can be used to take virtual walks,

explore landmarks or find shops, restaurants and hotels.

360-degree videos, also known as immersive

videos or spherical videos, are video recordings where a

view in every direction is recorded at the same time, and shot

using an omnidirectional camera or a collection of cameras.

360-degree videos can be played on displays or projectors

arranged in a sphere or some part of a sphere.

During playback on normal flat display the viewer has

control of the viewing direction like a panorama.

METAVERSEWith Metaverse we can create our own Augmented

Reality (AR) experiences.

We create experiences for free in Metaverse Studio (on

our computer), and then watch them come to life in the

AR The most obvious benefit of AR in education is that it

changes the way that students interact with their world and, in turn, the way they learn their subject content.

Pre-made AR resources are readily available.

Printing AR-enabled worksheets allows students the chance to engage with the AR at home.

AR can make class trips more informative.
