STRATEGIC INTERVENTION MATERIAL

IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY II

Page 2: Sim Photosynthesis

Background of the Study

Learning Photosynthesis is not as easy as A, B, C, especially if the materials are not available or the students forgot to bring the assigned materials.

This SIM inspired material, the students will learn various ways such as games, puzzles and picture analysis.

Learning is fun and dynamic with this Strategic Intervention Material.

Guide card What is photosynthesis?

Students NoteAfter reading this page I still do not understand Now I understand what the

lesson is all about. What I think about the things to

do. Easy HardFor this lesson, I want to study it Alone With one of my classmates. Within the group

Plants, algae, and other chlorophyll-bearing organisms capture light energy and use it to produce food. This energy is passed on to animals that feed directly on plants or on other animals that have fed on plants. The entire process of capturing light energy to produce food is called photosynthesis. The equation is:

6CO2 + 6H2O + light chlorophyll

(energy)C6H12O6 + O6

Page 5: Sim Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is two stage process. The light reaction that took place in the grana of the chloroplast and the dark reaction that took place in he stroma of the chloroplast.

In the light-dependent process, light strikes chlorophyll in such a way as to excite electrons to a higher energy state. In a series of reactions, the energy is converted (along an electron transport process) into ATP and NADPH. Water is split in the process, releasing oxygen as a by product of the reaction. The ATP and NADPH are used to make C-C bonds in the dark reaction. The photosynthetic process, in which food(sugar) molecules are formed from the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere with the use of ATP can occur in the dark as long as ATP is present.

Man’s pursuit to understand his body and all things around him is relentless. As a Science Teacher, we were tasked to gather data in as far as least mastered skills and competencies of the students in Science and Technology are concerned. I was obliged to teach Science and Technology II, or Biology from school year 2008-Present. During this period of time, I’ve made an observation that students have problems dealing with lessons particularly with the topic of photosynthesis, so I have reached a conclusion that students must not be taught traditionally. Aside from the fact that teachers nowadays serves as facilitators, we need to have follow up activities and an inquiry approach for much greater extent that can be done under the limitations imposed by the Basic Education Curriculum (BEC). And this I believed can be executed by using another version of my Strategic Intervention Materials (SIM). I started to use this technique on some grounds, and this has proven to be effective, especially when reproduced and handed out to learners with difficulties understanding hard topics in Biology.
