The  annual  golf  tournament  will  be  bigger  and  better  in  2007.    Our  club’s  CELEBRITY  GOLF CLASSIC will  be  held  at Moorpark  Country  Club  on May  4,  and we’ve  promised  to  include  a celebrity with every  foursome.   The charities  that will benefit  from  the proceeds of  the  tournament are  the  health  and wellness  programs  of  Simi  Valley  through  the  SIMI  VALLEY  COMMUNITY FOUNDATION, which include the Free Clinic, Samaritan Center, and the hospital’s Neonatal Unit.  In addition to serving the needs of the community, the Foundation has promised to partner with us in publicizing and promoting this great fundraising event. 

It’s time for all our Teams to get together and submit their sponsorship names, use their resources to gather  raffle prizes,  and  remember  to  take  the Gift Certificate  form with  them  to  every  store  and restaurant you patronize.  To make sure you always have one available, this newsletter will provide them in every issue until the tournament date.

ed  n  an  8‐day  tou   of the  alapagos  Islands (600 miles offshore of Ecuador) on a 16 passenger boat.  We had walking tours on various islands, and each night we  cruised  to  a  new  island while we  slept. We went snorkeling every day and the kids all did several dives.  We viewed many different species of birds, reptiles, sea life, turtles/tortoises, and plants.  

Our  family  time  togetherEcuadorʹs  capital  city  at  9,250  ft.  The  first  day 

we saw the countryside north of Quito, including a stop at  a  monument  marking  the  Equator  (I  have  the obligatory  picture  of  me  with  one  foot  in  each hemisphere), and spent   few hours on a busy Saturday in  the  outdoor marketplace  at Otavalo,  over  10  square blocks.   On Christmas  Eve we  took  a walking  tour  of ʺold  Quito,ʺ  visiting  many  squares  anchored  by churches,  and followed  a  Christmas  p rade  of  local people  in native dress with  their animals, dancing, and tossing  rose  petals.  Near  our  hotel  in  “new”  Quito  I found a bench with an ad for the Kiwanis Club of Quito!  (See page 5).

the  city.  There  were  many  people  out  and  about  ‐ shopping,  walking,  playing,  and  enjoying  a  beautiful day. We also saw more small religious parades, replete with costumes, music, and dancing.  

From Lima, we flew to Cusco  Inca  empire,  where  we  took  guided  tours  of 

various Inca ruins near and within Cusco, and took the train to Machu Picchu. The sheer scale of this ʺlost cityʺ ‐ the  only  one  never  discovered,  therefore  never destroyed,  by  the  Spaniards,  was  awe‐inspiring.  We spent two days exploring this wonder.  An amazing fact of  the  Inca culture was  the provision of pure mountain glacial water  to each  city,  requiring miles of aqueducts through nearly  inaccessible  terrain.  The  fountains  at Machu Picchu, fed by these aqueducts, still flow  just as they did over 200 years ago! There’s also the mystery of how  their  walls  and  buildings  have  been  constructed with  enormous  stones;  shaped,  smoothed, and fitted  erfectly  together  w thout  mortar,  able  to withstand earthquakes for  undreds  f years!  

Needless  to  say, we  arrived home  exhen 600 pictures.  Iʹll talk about the trip and show 

some of these shots at our meetings in the near future.

with  his  parents  and  younger brother.    Both  boys  attended parochial  schools  during  their growing up years.   

As a young nd began building his own models when he was 

8 or  9.   He  also began  studying piano  at  the  age of  6, went  to  a music  conservatory  from  age  11  to  13,  and continuing until  financial constraints made  it necessary to stop his lessons. 

In  college prepOTC  and  qualified  for  a  scholarship  to Notre 

Dame University, where he spent four years majoring in Aeronautical  Engineering.    At  graduation  in  1957,  he was commissioned as an Ensign in the regular Navy. 

Dick’s  contract  with  the  Navy  found  him ight  training  that ended when he developed an 

ear problem.   He  then  served  as  a Deck  and Gunnery Officer  aboard  the heavy  cruiser U.S.S  St. Paul  (CA73) stationed in Japan and traveled throughout the Far East. 

After his stint in the Navy, he went to work as a rvice Engineer for Honeywell on various projects 

including  the  YF12  and  SR71  Blackbirds.  After  nine years  he went  to  Lockheed Martin where  he  spent  10 years  as  Senior  Research  Specialist  on  the  design  and testing of  the L1011 TriStar airliner.   His expertise was requested at  the Skunk Works where he spent  the next 20  years working  on  top  secret  projects,  including  the F117 Stealth Fighter.   (Dick always says he’d  like to tell you more, but then he’d have to kill you!) 

Dick’s  hobbies  have  included ed model  aircraft,  skiing,  and  country western 

dancing.    In 1998 he discovered  that he and Madeleine were members of the same ski club, when they met on a club  ski  trip.    An  accomplished  dancer,  he  wooed Madeleine on  the dance  floor  at  the Cowboy Palace  in Chatsworth.

Since  retirement,  Dick  is  enjoying  traveling, relaxing  at  home,  and  more  recently  participating  in Kiwanis.
