The challenge in open-cast mining

Competitive pressures continue to grow in open-cast mining. To be successful, mining companies must continually optimize extraction costs and simultaneously ensure that the required quantities of materials in the required quality are extracted.

There are various ways to achieve this: with rugged technology that at the same time responds sensitively, and that can withstand the harsh requirements of normal open-cast mining operations. We offer trans-parency throughout the entire process.

At places where every excavator conveys up to 240,000 m3 every day, it’s easy to estimate the conse-quences of a potential system failure. That’s why maxi-mum availability, based on gentle operation of bucket chain and bucket wheel excavators, is mandatory in open-cast mining. Although the environment is harsh and system dimensions are huge, the technology must be sensitive so that it can be adjusted to the geological conditions.

With SIMINECIS EXC excavators can be loaded to their performance limits, while avoiding load peaks that would sharply increase the wear and tear and maintenance requirements.

A high degree of reliability is guaranteed right from the start, as specially developed low- and high-voltage switching stations provide an uninterrupted power supply. SIMATIC S7, our innovative and proven automa-tion system, also guarantees reliability, especially when coupled with our variable-speed drive solutions.

Higher performance owing to new automatic conveying system

The uniform utilization of the conveyor allows you to exactly specify the desired conveying throughput and thus to better control the volume. Peak loads are avoided, availability is increased, and mechanical stress is reduced.

Lower maintenance costs through gentle mechanic control

High mechanical stress causes components to wear out faster and leads to unnecessarily high maintenance costs.

This can be avoided with a package of control engi- neering measures that stabilizes oscillating systems, cushions load surges and also controls gearless devices. As a result, the life of mechanical equipment is provably lengthened while maintenance costs are reduced.

SIMINECIS EXC is the complete electrical engineering, drive, automation

and service package for bucket wheel and bucket chain excavators,

from compact equipment up to large excavators that transport up to

240,000 m3 daily.

Less work for everyone from equipment operators to service personnel

Automation and special tools for equipment operators support your personnel so that they can fully concen-trate on their essential tasks. Through the use of the master-value transmitter specially developed for open-cast mining, selected setpoint values for automatic slewing angle limiting, cutting and cutting depth and cutting height are approached at the optimal time.

Specified physical limits such as maximum speed, acceleration, deceleration and jolt are reliably adhered to. Consistency checks minimize potential operating errors, and convenient visualization systems help the "man in the driver's cab" to control the device confi- dently in all situations.

At the same time, intelligent systems allow service per-sonnel to detect and eliminate errors quickly and easily.

Homogeneous system landscape, high service-friendliness

Whether drive engineering or automation, whether control and monitoring in the higher-level control center – all systems are connected to one another end to end. This results in simple and secure exchange of data and simple project planning, while the number of required interfaces seems to automatically decrease on its own.

Integrated SIMINECIS EXC concepts make sure your material logistics are in top form. Every concept is based on the precise, IT-supported acquisition of volume and material data.

K In transshipment depots we ensure that optimum use is made of the storage areas irrespective of the bulk material being handled – and we also minimize vessel turnaround times. We keep your materials on the move to make sure your processes are profitable.

K In coal-fired power stations we make more effective use of storage area and safeguard the correct mix of materials with varying calorific values – to maximize efficiency.

K In mixed storage yards at steel works and processing plants, with SIMINECIS MAQ we make it possible to mix a variety of materials with accuracy and precision in order to guarantee the qualities required – thus avoiding expensive quality give-aways. Plus, volume-controlled reclaiming satisfies another practice- oriented requirement.

Individual systems – diagnosis included

Our systems designed for loading, reclaiming and conveying provide a basis for efficient storage depot operations – pushing the limits of what is technically feasible and economically practical. Integrated reporting and diagnostic systems simplify plant handling and maintenance: error elimination times are significantly reduced and availability is increased.

For decades we have been leaders in the automation, visua-

lization and optimization of material handling processes. The

expertise we gained has been integrated into SIMINECIS EXC,

allowing us to offer flexible solutions for continuous handling

equipment – as used for example in transshipment depots,

coal-fire power stations, steel works and processing plants.

We also offer the facility for integration with higher-level

material management solutions.

For years now we have been implementing fully auto-matic solutions for stackers, reclaimers and combined systems. SIMINECIS MAQ is the IT-assisted 3D dump data acquisition, which allows safe approach, drop-off and reclaim operations without risking material losses.

SIMINECIS MOM enables automation in manless opera-tion. Several pieces of dump equipment can be operated from a central control station. Laser scanners determine the surface profile of the dump. Together with the exact position of the dump equipment, this 3D surface profile provides the basis for automated control of the dump equipment.

We optimize conveyor operations with the aid of regu-lated drives that permit variable speeds dependent on load. Integral to such solutions are reliable automated material monitoring and integrated safety circuits – designed to protect operating personnel, as well as the technology itself.
