MANITOBA SIMMENTAL genetics are an excellent choice for many reasons:

Mothering ability- It is no secret that SIMMENTAL females make great mothers due to their superior milking ability & fertility. Longevity – Many SIMMENTAL females are still producing saleable bulls and replacement quality females at close to and above 10 years. Color – find the SIMMENTAL bull that will complement your operation; red/red baldie, black/black baldie, or traditionally marked fullbloods. Low birth weights & high weaning weights – SIMMENTAL can give you the highest spread between birth and weaning weights. Many SIMMENTAL bulls throw a low 80-90 pound birth weight but their calves still grow into powerhouses at weaning time. Show potential – purebred shows or 4-H achievements, commercial pens or carcass classes, SIMMENTAL sired calves have dominated show rings accross North America. Find your next SIMMENTAL bull at one of these upcoming sales or any MSA member.

........howdy friends and welcome to spring.........it’s comin, I can feel it in my bones.......or it could be arthritis.......either way time will tell....an early spring and a dry summer, that’s my wish for everyone...a tall order I know but one can always hope...a very good friend of mine is really good at reading sign and she is predicting a summer with not quite so much rain.....has to do with no fog or hoar frost this winter to speak of and she is often right......let’s keep our fingers crossed.................been to any bull sales yet?.....they’ve been good so far and there’s every indication that they will be that way all spring......it’s the year of the Simmental and there’s something for everybody and plenty to go around so go get one....you’ll be glad you did.......................no news to report so you’ll have to read my ramblings instead........been talking to lots of folks in my travels and finding an interesting topic keeps com-ing up......polled bulls and more specifically homozy-gous polled bulls and the increasing trend of breed-ers testing for that trait....who or what is fueling this practice?.......if bull customers are demanding it well then I guess it’s justified...but I have talked to several breeders who are opposed to this trend because they feel it will affect the quality of the genetic pool...and I have also talked to some commercial producers who are not in favor of it either....in fact one commercial cattleman told me the bulls they buy don’t even have to be polled, they want quality first, and polled is a bonus.....and they run 1000 head....something to chew on before you dive in..................well we’ve had some feedback on the Focus 20th anniversary party idea so looks like it might happen.......now we just have to pick a date that suits everyone, not hard at all what with all the weddings, cattle shows and other parties goin on....how does July 23 sound....should be warmed up by then, first cut of hay should be done, won’t be swathin yet, mosquitoes will be bad but maybe we can spray...what do ya say?...oh ya, it will be in our yard....I know it’s alot farther for you to drive comin this way but would ya do it just this once??...might be worth the trip, maybe you’ll win a door prize......catch ya on the road......... Lois

I thought I would take this opportunity to let you know who’s who in the Manitoba YCS; Emily Hickson is the President, Andrea Arbuckle, Vice-President, Ryan Downey, Secretary and Taylor Carvey, Treasurer. A huge Thank You goes out to Jacquie Downey, Shannon Carvey and Lesley Hedley for helping out with our association! Unfortunately the MYCSA was unable to meet back in January for the AGM; we are planning to have our meeting at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. This will be our AGM and there will be elections held at this time. The positions up for election are Vice President and Secretary as they are both 1 year terms. President and Treasurer are both 2 year terms. We are always looking for new members and people willing to help out! Hope to see you there! At the National level, things have wrapped up with the 2010 National Classic in Quebec, it was a fantastic event! Thank you to Emily Grey and the Quebec Association. Our calendar fundraiser was another great success, look for it with the January issue of the Commercial Country! Thank you to all those who supported this fundraiser! Emily Hickson and I have been involved in some conference calls in planning for the upcoming 2011 events. We are heading to Calgary at the end of March for our board meeting. This is an annual meeting where all the National Board members meet in person to plan the summer and fall events such as the National Classic and the Calendar Fundraiser Auction. We also have the opportunity to meet with the CSA board to discuss ideas and the direction of the YCSA. Mark your calendars…We are very excited that the National YCSA Classic will be held in Manitoba this summer!! It will be held in conjunction with the Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up in Neepawa on July 29-30!! We are very excited to work with the Round-Up committee to host this great event. Watch the CSA website for registration forms and more details! Or check us out on Facebook! If you have any questions feel free to contact me anytime! I look forward to seeing you around this spring!- Andrea Arbuckle National YCSA [email protected] (204) 483-0319

36-SIMMENTAL FOCUS

I know any number of highly successful cattle producers, like you, who are to be congratulated for having developed a successful business to date. You chose your breed and built your business to satisfy the needs of your customers (your target market).

You’ve earned the right to proudly wear your Stetson. Like most of us, you may wear any num-ber of hats; spouse, parent, breadwinner, community volunteer, church member, competitor, board mem-ber, friend, teacher or student. Little wonder that you have, as yet, not had the time, opportunity, or resourc-es, to master the art of marketing your cattle business in a tough economic climate.

For those of you who are looking to put on your marketing person’s hat, Lois (Gould) and I respectfully dedicate this new series of marketing tips to give you a leg up on this, perhaps under developed, aspect of your business. In today’s highly challeng-ing times, improving your marketing strategies by taking advantage of free or cost effective marketing techniques may make the difference between barely surviving and thriving.

It’s our goal to help you with your time and resources crunch by offering you a series of Market-ing Tools articles. Starting with this issue, we will provide basic information at the rate of one tool per is-sue. Each tool will be offered in sequence so you can construct your marketing plan from the ground up. Should some of these tools stir your interest and you want to go into more detail, you are invited to read more on my Marketing tips blog, www.horsescoops.com//blog/.

Marketing Tip #1- The Bare Bones of Marketing

Marketing is more than just advertising, it’s really the whole environment surrounding your cattle business. While that may sound intimidating, don’t worry, you are already employing marketing strategies on a daily basis. You just may not recognize it as such.Let’s say you are in town picking up mineral from a

local feed store, someone politely asks you how things are going. You reply, “Great, we’re really excited about our new calf crop.” A customer in line behind you asks, “What kind of cattle do you raise?” And the conversation takes off. Well, you’re not just having a conversation, you’re marketing- good for you!

The No.1 Absolute “Must-have” Marketing Tool:

But, do you have a business card to give to this customer, or to leave some behind at the feed store? Does your business card accurately describe your op-eration? Does it include your contact information, and list your email address and website? Serious business people have business cards and they make the effort to distribute them as often as possible. Should we, as serious cattle-business people, do any less? If you don’t already have business cards, please, start here. Commercially printed business cards are not all that expensive. You could even print them yourself on your computer very economically, but be sure to chose good quality card stock and to use a classy design because you only get one chance to make a good first impression. If you think you don’t need business cards, then how would that customer from the feed store manage to remember who he or she spoke to at the store? How would he or she con-tact you? Or look up your website?

What Other Tools Do You Need?

Having your business card in hand jump starts the marketing cycle. That customer from the feed store notices your website address on your business card and looks up your cattle operation. Your website offers an online sign up form so he/she can receive regular email updates or a monthly newsletter. The email or newsletter sign up permits you to be in touch with them on a cyclical basis. This increases your opportunities to sell them on your program. (Okay, so you don’t have a website yet, never mind a monthly newsletter- we’ll deal with that in later articles.)

SIMMENTAL FOCUS-3938-SIMMENTAL FOCUSTop Ten Marketing Tips (cont’d)

While each of these marketing tools can stand alone, they work so much harder for you when they support and complement each other. If you have other printed materials, such as business stationary, letterhead, envelopes, brochures, or you place advertisements in cattle magazines, sale catalogues or industry directo-ries, make sure they contain all your contact informa-tion including your telephone number, email and website addresses. You’d be surprised how often we notice one or more of these critical identifiers are missing!

To hopefully whet your appetite for what’s to come- here are the Top Ten Marketing Tools articles to follow in subsequent issues:

• The Bare Bones of Marketing ( covered in this is-sue)

• Identifying and Developing Relationships with your Customers

• Writing & Submitting News Releases

• Showcasing your product or services in public places

• Marketing through Email, Facebook, Twitter and other Social Networking sites

• Net Etiquette (Website & Email “do’s & don’ts”)

• Measuring the effectiveness of your website (is it working for you?)

• Building business networks & positioning your busi-ness within the industry

• Building credibility to generate customer referrals

• After sales service

In the spirit of mutual learning and sharing, we invite your comments and feedback (positive and negative), which you can post on my website’s blog or submit direct to the editor. See you next issue.
