03ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE of PALAZZO PIGNANO (ITALY)Palazzo pignano is a small town located in the middle of the countryside near Milano. in the early 2000’s the excavations brought to light the remainings of an ancient roman vil-la, turning suddenly this slice of agricultural land into a site of historical interest.the project’s goal is to turn this site into a real archaeological park: the main idea is to shift the visitor’s point of view bringing it underground, where the vil-la lies, sheltered by big white coverings, designed in the shape of the excavations.

04 JUNK PLACES, MILANOThe development area, located in Milan, is a narrow slice of land between Milano-mortara railway and naviglio canal, crossed in it’s centre by another small canal and a car overpass.among the peculiarities of this place there’s the presence of an unfinished building designed by aldo rossi.re-use of exhisting spaces and public gardens planning are two of the main features of the project, which comprehends a 2-miles long greenway, public plazas and gardens, and such faci-lities as music halls, educational buildings and social housing for students.this project has been displayed at the exhibition “il paesaggio della città possibile”, pre-sented by vittorio gregotti, from 14th to 25th november 2011.

REIMAGINE THE WATERFRONT COMPETITIONEast River waterfront is a 3mile-long pathway included between FDR Drive on one side and East River on the other; this area changes its aspect from time to time: different width, connections with the city through bridges and parks, connections with the river through docks and peers. The most interesting feature of East River waterfront is that, despite the variety of situations, very few areas are really used by the population (i.e. Carl Schurz Park and 60th street access Park), perhaps because other areas are less attractive, isolated or lacking facilities.

08Our project starts with an analysis of flows of people through the waterfront: people reach the area mainly from the city, while the relation with the river is often barely visual (East River Ferry starts at 34th street). The main goal is to improve people’s use of these spaces by working on 6 different areas, trying to improve passive use and make them suitable for such attractive activities as fishing, sightseeing, playing etc… The common features of these areas are the proximity to street accesses, neighborhood activities, universities, hospitals. Another important goal is to increase the river accesses by the improving the East River Ferry service: this way, people will reach the Esplanade both from the city and from the river, and not only for leisure but for useful purposes as well.

la pavimentazione e l’arredo urbano sono disposti in modo da incanalare lo sguardo verso l’edificio principale della piazza

Viabilità

Lo spazio carrabile viene ridotto al mi-nimo necessario, delimitando gli spazi pedonali con dei dissuasori bassi, che consentono lo svolgersi del mercato nei giorni stabiliti

ILLUMINAZIONE

L’illuminazione si sviluppa su tre livelli: il percorso carrabile, il pozzo e la facciata.la luce percorrendo le superfici degli elementi li identifica e li valorizza all’interno della piazza.

ACQUE

Il fulcro della piazza sarà il pozzo: una ri-visitazione contemporanea di quello medievale. Le acque meteoriche convergeranno verso delle fessure all’interno della pavimentazione, unendo utilità e disegno.
