Our Stickley Story
L. & J.G. Stickley introduced their first furniture line, the Mission Oak, at a 1905 trade show in Grand Rapids,Michigan. Their collection of “simple furniture built along mission lines” helped set the standard in fine Americanwoodwork for the entire furniture industry. By the end of World War I, the Mission style had lost much of itspopularity, but today these early pieces are coveted by museums and collectors and bring premium bids at auction. In November, 1999, a record price of $596,900 was set for a Gustav Stickley sideboard that was designed for his ownhouse on Columbus Avenue in Syracuse, New York.
Experts over the years have recognized Stickley’s craftsmanship and have acclaimed these creations for theirpurity of form, soundness of construction and fitness of purpose. On January 21, 1956, Leopold Stickley was named“Revered Dean of Cabinet Makers whose art and craftsmanship has contributed mightily to American home life,”by House Beautiful, House & Garden, National Geographic, The New Yorker, Fortune and other publications.
The Modern EraA new era began for Stickley when,
in 1974, Alfred and Aminy Audipurchased the company and guided it tonew levels of accomplishments. In 1974there were only 25 employees at Stickley.Today the company employs over 1400artisans and craftspeople.
In addition to Arts & Crafts,Stickley’s team of skilled craftsmenmanufactures newly designed collectionsbuilt on the Craftsman ideal of makingfurnishings “that are better suited to ourneeds and more expressive of ourcharacter as a people.”Blending Stickley’sunique joinery, with a more streamlinedcontemporary influence, theMetropolitan Collection stands ready tomake history once again.

Over the years we have received countless letters from people who treasure their Stickleypieces. Their stories are incredibly moving, and they inspired us to launch “My Stickley,” anational contest inviting Stickley enthusiasts to share their Stickley stories.
The hundreds of entries we continue to receive are humorous, awesome and inspiring. While very different, they all share some common threads which include:
• Unforgettable memories of family and home, of relationships and traditions.“I am the fourth generation to sleep in my four poster Stickley bed…”
• A symbol of love, longevity and endurance.“Before he said it with diamonds, he saidit with Stickley.”
• Reverence for quality.“I have always appreciated the finer things in life. I have Navajorugs, a Steinway piano, and Stickley furniture.”
• The furniture one aspires to own and pass on to future generations.“Some day myStickley will be heirlooms – but for now, Stickley is my home.”
These are real stories by real people and they reflect the Stickley story which is rich infamily tradition and enduring relationships. It is also the story of connection to home as a
gathering place filled with warmth, friendship and magical moments. Now for an abbreviated version of Our Stickley Story: as a two-year-old Alfred received his Stickley Cannon Ball
Bed, which years later was passed on to our son Edward. Both of them remember swinging on the posts when theywere little children. The bed miraculously survived their youth and, in turn, awaits its rightful place with the thirdgeneration. Later, both of them went to Colgate University, where their fraternities were furnished with Stickley.Needless to say, the furniture enjoyed robust use. Over the years it’s been refinished and continues to grace thosefraternities today as though it were brand new.
Our first piece of furniture, as we set about to furnish our home, was a Stickley. Ourmost treasured terrace server arrived early in 1964 as a wedding present from Mrs. Stickley, while we eagerly awaited the Stickley bedroom, which was our family’s wedding present.Little did we know then that ten years later we would be rescuing a proud name andupholding Stickley’s tradition of excellence!
The revival of Stickley has been a most exciting and fulfilling journey. For the pastthirty years, it has been constantly changing and evolving, yet our vision has remainedconstant: to be the most respected company in the furniture industry, whose name issynonymous with quality, integrity, value and service.
Wherever you happen to be in your quest for furnishing your dream home, we inviteyou to experience the magic of Stickley. Amongst our many collections, from Mission to Metropolitan and Stickley FineUpholstery, you’ll discover a tremendous selection of home furnishings. Our endless options and possibilities enableyou to furnish your home with individual flair that fittingly bespeaks of your life’s experiences and the things you holdmost dear.
We thank you for investing in Stickley and look forward to hearing your own Stickley Story!

The Stickley Difference Uniquely Stickley
Enduring CraftsmanshipPride in craftsmanship is one of the cornerstones of the Stickley tradition. The Stickley motto “Als ik Kan” comes
from a quote by Flemish painter Jan Van Eyck which loosely translated means “to the best of my ability.” Even todayeach aspect of Stickley construction is approached with sincere dedication and a genuine respect for craft. We makeour furniture the best we can. Stickley’s many unique construction features make it the most lasting furniture beingcrafted today.
Among the special features are side hung and centerguided drawers, dovetailed cross rails, tongue and groove gluejoining and specially designed bed rail and casting receivers. Some of these methods have been used by the Stickleybrothers, others are more contemporary techniques designed to increase the durability of our classic designs.
Stickley’s reputation for excellence sets the standard in the furniture industry. We’re so sure of our quality constructionthat each master cabinet maker proudly puts his initials on every piece he builds.
FinishingThe legendary Stickley finish is the legacy of Leopold Stickley and his early experimentation with aqueous
ammonium finishes. The finishing process currently takes no less than four days, and requires a complex series ofapplications. The first step is an aqueous stain followed by fine sanding, then an oil stain, a sealer and sealer sanding. After applying the lacquer topcoat which provides a heat, alcohol and mar resistant surface, our craftspeople carefullysand and polish all exterior and interior surfaces to give them a soft, lustrous patina.
The extraordinary care and skill that go into Stickley finishes guarantee that each piece of furniture has its ownsingular beauty. No two finishes are ever exactly the same, but every finish is deep, lustrous and displays the innate glowof the natural wood to its best advantage.
The details shown here explain a few of Stickley’s unique and time-honored construction techniques. As youbecome familiar with distinguishing characteristics of fine furniture, bear in mind that most of these techniquesare used only by Stickley.
Placing of Glass withQuarteroundsIndividual panes of glass are cut for several Stickley pieces and are securedwith quarter rounds, mitered to fit perfectly in place.
Tongue & Groove JointsTongue and groove joints ensure accurateboard alignment and strong glue joints. This permits increased lumber thicknessfor solid, lasting furniture.
Dovetailed Cross Rails Cross rails on cases are dovetailed intothe ends to strengthen the case from sideto side. This joint is self-locking evenwithout glue, and separation of the endpanels is impossible, unless the wood is split apart.
Resawn & BookmatchedDoor PanelsWhen appropriate to the product design, door panels are resawn andbookmatched. Resawing is a process ofsplitting thick lumber into thinnerboards. Once split, the halves are openedlike a book revealing identical grain. Thistime-consuming and labor intensiveprocess assures beautifully grained doorpanels on all pieces.
Bed Rail ConstructionThe side rails of all beds are locked into a special casting. The end rails aremortised and tenoned into the posts andlocked with wood pins. Two panheadscrews are positioned at the ends ofeach rail to fit into an iron casting with a tongued slot. Our beds won’t wobble or rock.
Side-Hung & Center-GuidedDrawersThis method guarantees proper alignment of the drawer. The centerguide keeps the drawers from skewingsideways. Suspension on the side guideskeeps the drawers level even when heavily loaded. There is never any pressure against the bottom side edges, hence no scrape or screech and noexcessive friction, pulling or tugging. One can literally stand in a Stickley drawer.
6 7
The Finishing TouchHand rubbing is one of the ways in whichwe are able to achieve the depth and clarityof the legendary Stickley finish.
Hand SandingAfter intensive machine sanding, everypiece of furniture is thoroughly handsanded—even the insides of the drawers.Excess glue is carefully removed from alljoints. All sharp edges are eliminated, jointsare flushed, any scratch marks areremoved, and the pores of the wood areopened. Final hand sanding is meticulouslyexecuted by skilled craftspeople using timetested techniques.

Side-Hung and Center-Guided Drawers
Stickley’s drawers are side-hung and center-guided.This method guaranteesproper alignment of thedrawer. The center guidekeeps the drawers fromskewing sideways.Suspension on the side
guides keeps the drawers level, even when heavilyloaded. There is never any pressure against the bottomside edges, hence no scrape or screech and no excessivefriction, pulling or tugging.

Owners of vintage Stickley furniture will attest to the rich patina
cherry wood develops over time. As cherry wood ages, it naturally
mellows, usually deepening somewhat in color. This natural
phenomenon makes each piece of cherry wood furniture a truly
unique work of art. The degree of color change can vary, depending
on the selected finish and the furniture’s exposure to light. Newer
pieces will vary slightly in color from older pieces due to this
characteristic, even if they are in the same finish.
Cherry wood can contain small sap pockets or twig starts that may
appear to be blemishes, but are completely natural and to be expected
in any piece of solid cherry wood furniture. Another characteristic of
cherry wood is its broad color spectrum, from nearly white to deep
red, and every color tone in between. At Stickley, we do our best to
blend the various color tones of cherry to create a balance of natural
color on each piece, but there will be variations visible.
