OURTYPICALSTORY“Anyhalf-awakematerialistwellknows– thatwhichyouholdholdsyou.”—TomRobbins

Two years ago, Memorial Day weekend turned out to be a beautiful springweekendinVermont.IwokeupearlythatSaturdaywithonegoalinmind:cleanthegarage.Iknewitwasgoingtobeanall-dayprojectandsetmyalarmearlytoget a good start. My wife and I had decided to spend our three-day holidayweekendcleaning thehousefromtop tobottom.Afterall, that’swhat familiesdo.

And we are, by definition, just your standard, run-of- the-mill, middle-classfamilyoffourlivinginthesuburbs.MywifeandIareinourearly-thirties.Myson is 7,mydaughter, 3.Weare everything typical (minus thedog andwhitepicketfence).

ItallstartedharmlesslyenoughthatSaturdaymorningasmysonandIbegantoclean thegarage.Theneighbors alsohappened tobeoutsideplantinggardens,wateringflowers,andtendingtotheoutsideoftheirtwo-levelhome.

Nearly four hours later, we were still working on the same garage and ourneighbors were still working on their home. My neighbor, noticing myfrustrationwiththeproject, turnedtomeandsaidsarcastically,“Ahh,thejoysofhomeownership.”

Irespondedbysaying,“Well,youknowwhattheysay,‘Themorestuffyouown,themoreyourstuffownsyou’.”Hernextsentencestruckachordwithmymind,heart,andsoul,andchangedthecourseofmylifeforever.

WhyMinimalismwasanEasyChoiceNow, two years later, I can look back and see whyminimalism was an easychoice.Whyitresonatedwithmysoulfromtheverybeginning:

•Iwastiredofspendingvacationdayscleaning.

PRINCIPLE#1:BECONVINCED“You can’t have everything. Where would you put it?” – found in my son’sfortunecookie

Therearemanyreasonswhyyoumaybereadingthisbook:youdesireasimplelifestyle, you are interested in pursuing a simple lifestyle, or your partner isinterested in you pursuing a simple lifestyle. No matter your state of mindentering this book,Guiding Principle #1 of simplicity is always the same:BeConvinced.

OurActionsFollowOurHeartOur actions will always follow the true desire of our heart. What our heartbelievesandlovesalwaysdeterminesthepathofourlife.Wecanmaskourtruewantsforonlyashortwhile.Withouta trueheartchange, wealwaysreturn toourheart’sfirstlove.

Beforeanyofuscansimplifyourhomesandlives,wemustbeconvincedthatthelifestyleisworthoureffort.Toaccomplishthattask,Ihavelisted10benefitsoflivingaminimallifestyle:

Benefit#1—SPENDLESS.

One benefit of living simply is the simple reality that it costs less. Benefit#2—LESSSTRESS.

Benefit#6—BEMOREPRODUCTIVE.

Ourpossessionsconsumeour time.Whetherwearecleaning them, organizingthem, buyingthem, orsellingthem, themorethingsweown, themoretimetheyrob from our lives. Take shopping for example: the averageAmerican spendsnearly 12 hours every month shopping. Now, while it is impossible tocompletelyremoveshoppingfromourschedules, onebenefitoflivingsimplyistheopportunitytoliveamoreproductivelifebytheplainfactthatwespendlesstimeshopping.Addin thetimewespendcleaning, sorting, andorganizingourstuffoncewegetitinourhomesandwe’rebeginningtotalkaboutasignificantchunk of time.Weonly get one chance to live this life;wewould bewise tomakeitasproductiveaspossible.

Benefit#7—EXAMPLEFORMYKIDS.

AsImentioned,mysonis7andmydaughteris3.Rightnow,theyaresoakingup values from my wife and me about how to live and how to achievesignificance. Becomingminimalist hasmodeled formy children that personalbelongingsarenotthekeytohappiness, thatsecurityisfoundintheircharacter, and that the pursuit of happiness runs a different road than the pursuit ofpossessions.Thesearevaluablelifelessonstheywillneverlearnatschoolorinthemedia.

Benefit#8—FINANCIALLYSUPPORTOTHERCAUSES.

Closelyrelatedtothebenefitoffinancialfreedom, livingasimplelifeprovidesthe opportunity to financially support other causes. Minimalism provides anopportunitytonotjustsavemoneyforthesakeofkeepingitformyself, buttouseittofurthercausesthatIbelievein.Imetamanrecentlywhohasjustputhishouseonthemarkettosellsothathecandonatesomemoneytoacharitythathebelieves in strongly. Benefit#9—OWNHIGHERQUALITYTHINGS.

I will admit this benefit of minimalism came unexpected to me. For somereason, I didn’t combine owning fewer things and owning nicer things inmymind.Butthetruthis, theygohand-in-handandaredirectlyrelated.Whenwemade a commitment to buy fewer things, we opened up our lives to theopportunityofowningnicerthings.Takeyourwardrobeforexample:ifyouarelikemost,youhave25mediocreshirtshanginginyourcloset–eventhoughyoureally only wear 10 of them and truly love even less. Amuchmore sensibleapproach is tohave10 shirts that you truly lovehanging inyour closet ratherthan25thatyoujust“kindalike.”Basedonthebudgetaryreality thatweonlyhave a certain amount ofmoney thatwe can spendon clothes, you can eitherpurchase 20 shirts at $20 each or 10 at $40 each. In this way, a minimalistlifestyle allows you to purchase higher quality items. Remember, more is notbetter...betterisbetter.

Benefit#10—LESSWORKFORSOMEONEELSE.

Thispastyear, mymothersortedthebelongingsofadeceasedparent.Thispastmonth, myclose friendoversawanestate saleofa familyas they transitionedintoassistedliving.Thispastweek,Ihelpedafamilymoveoutoftheirresidenceof 45 years. Hours and hours were spent going through boxes and boxes ofbelongings,roombyroom.Somethingswerekept,somethingsweresold,muchwasthrownaway.Ineachcase,someoneotherthantheownerofthepossessionswasdoingall thework.Consider thefact thatatsomepoint inyour life(or inyour death) every single item of your belongings will be sorted by anotherhumanbeing.Youcancreateforyourselfa lessstressful life todayby livingaminimalist lifeandlessentheburdenonsomeoneclosetoyouaswell.Forthesakeofyourclosestfriendsandfamily,choosetoliveasimple,minimalistlife.

I have offered ten rational reasonswhy choosingminimalism as a lifestyle issuperior to the alternative lifestyle of purchasing, collecting, saving, andhoarding. On our blog, we have compiled a list of over 27 benefits ofminimalism. If you need more persuading, that may be a helpful place tocontinueyourpursuit.

PRINCIPLE#2:MAKEITWORKFORYOUMinimalism is the intentional promotion of the thingswemost value and theremovalofanythingthatdistractsusfromit.

RationalMinimalismMany people that I speak with get nervous when they hear the term“minimalist.”For them, it conjuresup imagesofdestitution, barrenwalls, andemptycupboards.Rightly so, theydecide that isnoway toenjoy life.Believeme,Iagree–thatisnowaytoenjoylife.

MaybethatiswhyIhavebeencalleda“rationalminimalist.”Ihavebecomeoneof the leading proponents for “rational minimalism” and wear the label withpride. If youwalked intoour home today, youwouldnot immediatelydeducethata“minimalist”liveshere.Whenyoulookinourlivingroom,youwouldseeatelevision,couches,booksandchildrens’toys(probablysomeonthefloor).Inourcoatclosetyouwouldfindavarietyofcoats,boots,mittens,andgloves.Inour toy room downstairs, you would find a video game system and probablymore toys on the floor (unless we cleaned them up before you arrived, ofcourse).Sincedecidingtobecomeminimalisttwoyearsago,wehavebeenonajourneytodefinewhatthatmeansforus.

We live in suburbia. We have two small children. We are active in ourcommunity. We love to entertain and show hospitality. While not exceptional,ourlifeisnotidenticaltoanybodyelse.Itisourlife–nobodyelse’s.Andifwewere going to becomeminimalist, it would have to be a style ofminimalismspecifictous.Itwouldrequireustoaskquestions,togive-and-take,toidentifywhatwemostvalueandbehumbleenoughtochangecoursewhennecessary.

Eventually,wedefinedminimalisminfiveaspects:

1. WE WILL INTENTIONALLY PROMOTE THE THINGS WE MOSTVALUE.The heart ofminimalism can be summed up in this phrase: It is theintentionalpromotionofthethingswemostvalueandtheremovalofanythingthatdistractsusfromit.Thispromotioncanbeseeninhowwespendourtime,theartworkthatwedisplay,andeventheclothesthatwewear.

Page 16: Simplify: 7 Guiding Principles to Help Anyone Declutter their Home & Life

2.WEWILLREMOVEALL“CLUTTER”FROMOURLIVES.Thisprocessbeganwithphysical items aswemoved from room to room selling, donating, and recycling everything thatwe no longer used.Aswe did,we realized thatsimplicityandorderbringsfreedom,joy,andbalance.Ourhomebegantogivelifeandenergyratherthandrainit.Aswebeganclearingphysicalclutterfromourlives,wenoticedopportunitytoremoveothernon-physicalclutterfromourlives: emotional clutter, relational clutter, and spiritual clutter. Since then, wehaveworkedhardtomaintainaclutter-freelife.

3. WE WILL DECORATE IN A MINIMALIST STYLE. Since becomingminimalist, we have removed numerous pieces of furniture and countlessdecorations fromourwalls and shelves. What remains is not just clean, sleek,andmodern,butalsomeaningful.Thedecorationsandpaintingsthatremainarethepiecesmostdeartooursoulsandlives.Asaresult,ourhousedrawspraisefrommanywhoenterandenjoyitssimplebeauty.

4.WEWILLUSEOURMONEYFORTHINGSMOREVALUABLETHANPHYSICAL POSSESSIONS.MadisonAvenue has controlled our finances fortoo long.Since thedaywewereborn, ithas tolduswhatneeds tobebought, when itneeds tobepurchased, andwhat storeweshouldvisit to find thebestvalue.Whenwechosefreedomfrommaterialpossessions,webrokethecontrolthatourconsumer-driven,capitalisticsocietyhashadoverus.Suddenly,wehavebeenfreedtouseourfinancestopursueendeavorsfargreaterthanthoseofferedatourlocaldepartmentstore.

5.WEWILLLIVEACOUNTER-CULTURALLIFETHATISATTRACTIVETOOTHERS.Wehavemetmanyminimalistsoverthepasttwoyearsthatlivealifethatisfarfromattractivetous.Theyhavesoldalltheirpossessionstolivecommunallyonafarm...no,thanks.Theyhavelistedalltheirpossessionsonasheetofpaperanddeterminedtoeliminateallbut100...no,thanks.Instead,wehave determined to live out a rational minimalism that fits our lifestyle andinvitesotherstosimplifytheirlivesaswell.

The benefits of our decision are unmistakable: more freedom, more impact,moretime,andlessstress.Sinceourdecision,wehaveencouragedhundredsofthousandsofhouseholdsaroundtheworldtosimplifytheirlife,removeclutter,andbecomeminimalist.Afterall,ifthistypicalfamilyoffourinthesuburbscanbecomeminimalist,socanyou!

Recently,Burlington,Vermont(whereIlivedforsixyears)heldits20thannualmarathon.I lookuptomarathonrunnersbecauseIadmiretheirself-discipline.Yet,whenItalktorunnersabouttheiraccomplishmentandthedauntingtaskthatitmust have been to run 26.2miles, they usually tellme the same thing: youdon’t run 26 miles your first time out. You start with a small, manageabledistanceandbuildyourwayup.

He was given someinterestingadvicebyhisdebtcounselor.Hiscounselordidn’ttellhimtopayoffthe highest percentage loans right away, instead he was told to pay off thesmallestdebtsfirst.Atfirst,Ithoughtthatwasabitodduntilmyfriendtoldmethe rationale: payingoff the smallest debts first results in a victory – one lessmonthlypayment.Even though itwasn’t thebiggestburden, it is stillone lessburden–onevictory.Andvictorybreedsmorevictory.

SimplifyingAnyRoomNo matter which drawer, closet, or room you choose to simplify, the sameprocess can be applied to each.As reasonably as possible, remove every itemfromthespace.

Physically touching each item provides your mind adequate room to focus.Then,sorteachitemintooneofthreecategories:keep,move,ordiscard.

RecognizingClutterWebster(youknow, theonewhowrotethedictionary)definesclutteras“tofillor coverwith scattered or disordered things that impedemovement or reduceeffectiveness.”Isitjustmeordoesthatdefinitionfeelcluttered?

Hereisamuchmorepracticaldefinitionofclutter:

Clutter is anything that is disorganized. The motto in our house is,“Everythinghasahome.”Cluttercollectswhenthingshavestrayedfromtheir home and got mixed up with everything else. Anything that isdisorganizedoruntidyisclutter.

Their success in our lives will require somebrainpower and intentionality. But they areworth the effortwe put into them. After all, the sooner we decrease consumerism’s influence, the easier it is tocontrolourspending.

UnderstandtheDownsideofConsumerism.Consumerism is an economic theory that argues an increasing consumptionofgoods is economically desirable for a civilization. It is most often associatedwith thewesternworld, but is true of farmore economic systems around theworldthanjustthewest.

Consumerismhasitsadvantages:

The consumer chooses his/her lifestyle – what goods are necessary andwhatluxuriescanbeafforded.

There are economic advantages to a large segment of the population(middle-andupper-class).

There is opportunity andmotivation to improve your social standing byworkinghard.

Butconsumerismalsohasitsdisadvantages:

In a consumerist market, it is in the interest of producers that theconsumer’s needs and desires never be completely or permanentlyfulfilled, so the consumer can repeat the consumption process andpurchase more products. This can be accomplished with made-to-break

products, continuously changing the trends of themarket (i.e., fashion),employingclass-envy,orencouragingindividualstopurchaseabovetheirmeans.
