He saw an ant pass by, busy gathering food. ‘Why not come and chat with me,’ said the grasshopper, ‘instead of toiling and moiling in that way?’‘I am helping in gathering food for the winter,’ said the ant, ‘and I recommend you to do the same.’‘Why bother about winter?’ said the grasshopper, ‘We have plenty of food at present.’ But the ant went on its way and conti nued its toil.When the winter came, the grasshopper had no food and found himself dying of hunger—while he saw the ants distributi ng food among themselves from the stores they had collected in the summer. Buttheywantedtoflyforlongerperiods.Sotheythoughtofenginesliketheonesinfactories.Theyfitoneintotheirnewestgliderandtestedtheirplane.SoitwasonDecember14,1903,thatWilburWrightmadethefirsttrywiththenewman-poweredaeroplane.Theflightdidn’tlastlongandendedinacrash,whichtooktheWrightsafewdaystorepair.

Afterrepairingtheplane,OrvilleandWilburdecidedtoputtheplaneonflatground.ThiswouldallowWilburtorunalongwiththeplaneasitwasgainingspeedandkeeptherightwingbalanced.Wilburpushed,Orvillepedaled,andtheplaneroseintheair.Itwasupintheskyfor12secondsandwentupto120feet.TheWrightbrothershadamachinethatcouldfly!Theyflewthemachinethreetimesthatday,mainlybecauseeachtimetheymanagedtolandwithoutcrashing.Eachflightwasabitlonger.ThefinalflightofthedaycarriedWilbur852feet.Hewasintheairfor59seconds.

TheWrightplanewasn’tahitinoneday.In1908,WilburflewoneoftheirplanesinfrontofroyaltyinEurope.Inthesameyear,therestofAmericadiscoveredtheaeroplanewhenanewspaperreporterflewbyplaneandwroteaboutit.Thestorywassooninnewspapersalloverthecountry.TheWrightsweresuddenlyfamous!
