The Christmas spirit defi nitely strikes when singing carols around the Christmas tree on a cold and brisk winter evening. Such was evident when Young residents celebrated the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Main Street Park last Sunday evening. Carolers gath-ered ‘round the tree, singing a selection of Christmas carols, then witnessed the offi cial lighting of the tree as the magical blue lights came to life . . . when out on the street there arose such a clatter, we looked to our right to see what was the matter, when what to our wonder-ing eyes should appear, but a shiny Ford truck with a sleigh and good ole’ Santa dear! With no hesitation all the children ran to the Santa wagon, hopped on some fresh straw bales, and went for a ride with Jolly St. Nick. The sleigh pulled up to the community hall where all were invited in to enjoy hot chocolate and freshly baked doughnuts. Young residents were not the only ones who enjoyed some hot cocoa, as Santa was there too, handing out treats and getting his picture taken with all the chil-dren. The community of Young will have another opportun-ity to celebrate the Christmas season once again when McClellan School hosts a community Christmas concert Dec. 17. If you are interested in this event or any other happenings at school be sure to visit the McClellan web-site at [email protected] All for now.

Christmas time

Christmas time for boys and girls

Is a happy day,For we go to

grandmamma’sAnd eat and sing and play.

Grandma does not say to us —

“Stop that horrid noise.”‘Cause she understands

we can’t,When we’re “only boys.”

And she lets the girls play house,

In the garret old,And when they strew

things around,Grandma doesn’t scold.

But we ought to pick them up,

Even on Christmas day,For we shouldn’t make

kind friendsTrouble with our play.

Yes, we love the Christmas time

Best of all the year,We have waited

for it long,Now, at last, it’s here.

Tips on holiday decorating

(NC)—No matter the conditions outside, every winter brings a blizzard of parties, family gatherings and unexpected guests in celebration of the holidays. To make your home a warm and welcome retreat for you and your guests, Sally Morse, director of creative ser-vices for Hunter Douglas, offers the following tips on preparing your home for the holidays: • Decorating for the holidays can extend beyond the tree and still be simple with a little imagination. In the living area, you can use wide ribbon to “gift wrap” throw pillows like packages to give your couch a fes-tive feel. Adorn your walls with indoor wreaths cre-ated from scarves and a little boxwood. • At the dinner table, you can dress up dining room chairs, while also protecting them, by attaching gold tassels to colourful fabric and draping it over the seat. Create a festive centrepiece by fi lling a crystal bowl with fresh cranberries, adding one aspirin for fresh-

ness, and topping it with water and fresh fl owers with cut stems. For place cards, use holiday cards in small gilded frames. If your dining room features a chandelier, decorate it with ornaments to round out the holiday look. • Windows are really the focal point of any deco-rative scheme. For a soft look at the window that is beautiful year-round, use a window fashion which offer soft, fi ltered light that warms up short win-ter days and adds a gor-geous glow to any room. • Create a fun and magi-cal outdoor space using infl atables in the yard. They are perfect for fami-lies with children, and add a lighthearted touch for a welcoming curb ap-peal for holiday guests and those out enjoying the lights and sights of Christmas.

(NC)—A cookie exchange is a delightful way to spend a few hours with friends . . . and to give each other a con-tainer of home-baked cookies for the holidays. Here is how to organize your cookie exchange: • Choose a date and invite friends by phone or email. • Ask everyone to bake their family’s favourite cookie (six to 12 cookies for each person at the cookie exchange plus an extra dozen to share during the get-together). • Suggest everyone pack their cookies between layers of waxed paper in airtight containers or a plate covered with saran wrap (and let frosted and crunchy-style cook-ies harden before packing . . . or they might soften). • Remind everyone to bring empty containers so they can take home all their new home-baked cookies too. GREAT IDEA: Before the exchange takes place, serve some refreshments, taste test the cookies, and ask every-one to tell why their cookies are so special. (That will be a gift in itself.)

We are all glad to once again be amidst our sea-sons of Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. Christmas is a time when family and friends gather to enjoy the blessings of love and togetherness that the holiday season offers us in abundance. It is also a time of refl ection where we can look back on the challenges of the past year and be grateful for the good fortune we received in 2009. Here in rural Saskatch-ewan, we were certainly grateful for the long fall season by which our farm-ers were able to complete the harvest. Our Christmas tradition is one that resonates with us especially when we look back on our childhood. We can all recall the excite-ment and anticipation of presents under the tree, the joy of Christmas mor-ning, and the aroma of tur-key and all the trimmings. For most of us, the Christ-mas holidays are the hap-piest memories of family that we keep in our hearts. As families welcome new children into their lives,

Why is mistletoe hung?

Why does mistletoe hang over the front door?

For Scandinavians, the goddess of love (Frigga) is strongly associated with mistletoe. This link to ro-mance may be where our tradition of kissing under mistletoe comes from.

For me, Christmas is a time for wor-ship, friendship, food, family and above all, the exchange of love for one another,

While I am enjoying all of the Christ-

May this Christmas season bring us all joy, happiness and warm everlasting memories.

Glenna Nickolay and I

Two thousand years ago, a Saviour was born, heralded as bringing good news of great joy to all people. Jesus came to give us a message of hope, peace, and healing. He told us to love one another and taught us how to reach out to others, especially those less fortunate than ourselves. Saskatchewan is a great place to live and getting even better. But there are still those in Saskatchewan and many around the world who do not have the privilege of looking forward to a merry Christmas. We can all do our part in the coming year to ensure each person in this province has a reason to celebrate. We can reach out to someone in need locally, through hard working groups like the Salvation Army or by supporting an organization that reaches out to other countries to of-fer help and hope like Operation Christmas Child. Include someone in your Christmas who has suffered illness or loss this year and is experiencing loneliness and sadness instead of joy or extend the hand of friend-ship to one of the many new people who have moved to Saskatchewan who cannot be with family this Christ-mas. As author Washington Irving said, “Christmas is the season for kindling the fi re of hospitality in the home, and the fl ame of charity in the heart.” In this coming Olympic year may this fl ame be our personal torch. The

gift of time along with a warm heart may add that mo-ment of beauty to someone’s life when they need it most. Christmas is a great time for those moments. Imagine Christmas Eve inside a church, the lights are dimmed. Each person holds a candle. The tiny fl ame brings a soft glow to each face above it. Voices are raised and sing the eternal question, “What Child is this?” As the notes softly end, there is a sense of peace that settles in each heart because Christmas has answered that question. We know the Child. In that moment, we remember what He taught. Reality will soon enough bring back its responsibil-ities and worries and fears, but each of us needs more of those moments. Those moments of peace, beauty and harmony. Those moments that come from giving of our-selves. That is our wish for all of you. So from me and my wife Tami, our children Megan, Colter and Faith, on behalf of our MLA’s and the Govern-ment of Saskatchewan, to everyone in this great province that the government serves, “May the spirit of Christmas bring you peace. The gladness of Christmas give you hope. The warmth of Christmas grant you love.” Merry Christmas, and a very blessed, healthy and happy New Year.

About 125 attended the Liberty annual Christmas supper and concert Sun-day, Dec. 6. There were seven items on the pro-gram before Santa arrived with his bags of goodies. It is great that the Liberty Service Club holds this on-going program and supper. I am sure everyone appre-ciates this.

(NC)—The delicate fl avour of wild blueberries is added to traditional eggnog that has all the rich delicious taste one would expect. It is best to let blueberries thaw overnight in the refrigera-tor and be sure to add the juices for deep colour and fl avour. Garnish the top with some additional wild blueberries.

Ingredients: 4 eggs 4 1/2 cup granulated sugar (125 mL) 1 1/3 cups milk (325 mL) 1 tbsp grated orange rind (15 mL) 2 cups frozen wild blueberries, thawed (500 mL) 1 cup 5 per cent light cream (250 mL) 1/4 cup rum (optional) (50 mL) 1 cup whipping cream (250 mL) Freshly grated nutmeg or cinnamon

Directions: In a saucepan, whisk

together eggs and 1/3 cup (75 mL) of the sugar. Whisk in milk and or-ange rind. Cook, whisking over medium low heat for about 10 minutes or until thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon. Pour through a fi ne mesh sieve

Serve up a wild blueberry eggnoginto large bowl. Place wild blueberries into blender with remaining sugar and puree until smooth. Press through sieve into bowl with milk mixture. Whisk in cream until well com-bined. Cover and refriger-ate for at least two hours or until chilled. (Make-ahead: Refrigerate for up to two days.) As an option, whisk in rum. Whip cream and gently whisk one third

Thank you for your business!

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas - at least on the streets of Imperial. House after house has been decorated and everyone is busy preparing for the sea-son. Harmony Suite choir has started its seasonal concerts. Sunday evening kicked things off with a performance at the Lib-erty Service Club annual Christmas dinner and con-cert. Despite some com-petition from some young attendees who were more anxious for Santa than songs, the performance went well and was enjoyed by everyone. Monday even-ing the choir performed for the residents of the Long Lake Valley Integrated Health facility. The resi-dents enjoyed the perform-ance, which served as a warm-up for the next con-cert to be held in Bethune. The choir’s annual concert

in Davidson is scheduled for Dec. 18 at the New Life Pentecostal Church and in Imperial Sunday, Dec. 20 at St. Andrew’s United Church.

into chilled wild blueberry mixture. Gently whisk in remaining whipped cream until no streaks remain. Pour into punch bowl or ladle into chilled mugs and sprinkle with nutmeg. Makes 10 to 12 servings. Tip: To keep the blue colour vibrant, serve the eggnog with the whipped cream on top instead of stirring in and sprinkle with the nutmeg.

To Santa ClausDear Santa Claus, I’ll let you know

The few things that I need,And if you’ll bring them to me

I’ll be much obliged indeed.

I want a horse and wagon,And a boat that’s painted red,An elephant, a jumping-jack,

You need not bring a sled,

For I have one very pretty;But I want a trotting-horse,

A man who wheels a wheelbarrow,

And candy, too, of course.

Now, Santa dear, you’ll not forget.

I wish you’d write them down,And leave them all

at my houseWhen you journey through the town.

Wishing all readers a very Merry Christmas in this special Christ-mas issue of the Watrous Manitou! Attend a Christ-mas concert to get into the Christmas spirit with the entertainment of the children of our commun-ity: St. Alphonse School Christmas concert at St. Al-phonse Church Thursday, Dec. 17; Viscount Central School Christmas concert Monday Dec. 21. The dark evenings are now brightly lighted with all the beauti-ful Christmas decorations and lights that are going up at many houses in the village. Anyone driving through greatly appreci-ates the work some people go to creating these winter scenes. Get well wishes are ex-tended to Joe Malzsenicz-ky who is recovering from heart trouble and what

they call non-invasive sur-gery to fi x it. Friday Dec. 4 was the annual potluck supper and Sunday school Christ-mas concert at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Viscount. This traditional evening always puts every-one into the Christmas spirit. After a delicious meal of perfect variety, the Christmas tree and church were decorated. The Sun-day school entertained the people attending with an original Christmas pa-geant and some very fi ne singing. After the intro-duction of all the partici-pants the Sunday school teachers were recognized: Darren Reimer, Amanda Sutherland, Tammy Val-levand, Jennifer Hollman

and Christy Reimer. Some of the children performed solos much to the delight of the congregation. An-drew Sutherland played the clarinet, Jake Edwards on guitar, Destiny Reimer on piano and Mataya Suder-man on recorder. Ryanne Hollman then assisted Amanda Sutherland hand-ing out unique Christmas cards to the Sunday school teachers and pastors. All of the children received a bagful of goodies compli-ments of the church. A serene setting was created with the church illumin-ated only by Christmas lights as everyone sang Si-lent Night to end the even-ing. Dec. 5, there were 19 out

for breakfast at the Vis-count seniors. John Mar-coux won the 50/50. Ger-rie Dieno and Chris Rault volunteered their time and talent. Please call me with news you would like printed or email me at [email protected] bowling leagues, week of Nov. 30

Oh, for the winters that used to be;The winters that only a boy may see!Rich with snowfl akes’ rush and swirl;Keen as a diamond; pure as a pearl;Brimming with healthful, rollicking fun;Sweet with their rest when the play was done; With kindly revels each day decreed,

And a Christmas sled for the royal steed.Down from the crest with a shrill hurray!Clear the track, there! Out of the way!Scarcely touching the path beneath;Dashing along, with a leap and swerve,Over the crossing, round the curve.Talk of your fl ying machines!Give me the swoop of that Christmas sled.
