FLOWER PLANTING: SATURDAY, MAY 14

Bring your gardening tools and your green thumbs, and we’ll make the grounds look as beautiful as ever this year. For information, contact Terri Clark at [email protected]

ENTERTAINMENT FOR 2016

The entertainment committee has worked diligently to complete bookings for the 2016 season. Forty-two dates have been booked, using 20 different acts. Saturday entertainment has been added back to the schedule, from May 21 through Labor Day weekend. Amazingly, the committee has been able to achieve their goals while staying approximately $6,000 under budget and nearly $16,000 below the amount spent on entertainment just a few years ago. A plan is also being developed to upgrade the Club’s sound system.

Back by popular demand, bands have been scheduled for three afternoon beach parties: July 23, 2:00 to 6:00pm; August 6, 4:00 to 8:00pm; and, August 27, 1:00 to 5:00. The August 6 beach party was scheduled later in the afternoon so as to coincide with either a pig roast or clam bake carrying into the evening dinner hours. If you have a preference (i.e., pig roast or clam bake), be sure to tell Steve Gongola, a member of the entertainment committee, or any board member.

Congratulations to Craig Winn, Mike Lash, and Sue Gruber for their outstanding work!

SPECIAL NOTICE FOR ROOM RENTERS

Mike Clark has generously purchased and installed all new lithium battery smoke alarms in each of the upstairs rooms, 32 in all. The batteries are good for ten years, and no maintenance or battery replacements should be needed.

WINE AND LIQUOR SALE

We still have a large surplus of wine and liquor from our inventory, and we would like to make it available to you for purchase. There are many fine wines and some exotic liqueurs available at very reasonable prices that you would not likely find anywhere else. Please keep your eyes on the weekly emails or signs around the Club for information, or ask Chip, the Bar Manager, if you have a particular interest. Your purchases are actually a win-win for you and the Club: you get something you want at a good price, and your purchases contribute to inventory reduction.

MORE MEMBER BENEFITS

Just a reminder to you that DLYC has a reciprocal arrangement with the Lenawee Country Club and the Interlake Yachting Association (ILYC), whereby DLYC members can visit other member yacht clubs and use the Lenawee Country Club up to three times for golfing (green fee and cart about $40), swimming, or dining. In turn, Lenawee Country Club members may use our facilities up to three times, by reservation 24 hours in advance. Both parties have agreed to certain restrictions, depending on availability.

U.S. COAST GUARD AUXILIARY

On Saturday, May 21, from 11:00am to 3:00pm, the Adrian Flotilla, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be at DLYC for an open house and informational session, and will be providing vessel safety checks for any interested members. It might be a good opportunity to check for problems that are not readily apparent.

MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGER

Steve Gongola

Spring has sprung at beautiful Devils Lake! Volunteers are painting new dock boards today and the grounds are being spruced up now that the weather appears to have broken. We have been interviewing and hiring staff to serve you and your family and we’re looking forward to seeing you during our opening weekend, Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30.

I am happy to announce that we have a new chef, Greg Schiesser, who has an impressive resume and comes highly recommended. I am looking forward to working with Greg as we elevate your dining experience with a new extensive menu that has delicious choices for everyone! Our late night menu on the weekends has been specially designed to provide necessary sustenance and energy so you can dance the night away! Speaking of dancing, I would like to thank Craig Winn and the entertainment committee for booking your favorite bands and entertainment for Friday and Saturday nights as well as special holiday celebrations. I should also mention that once the Club is in full swing for the summer, we will be offering Happy Hours during the week, so be sure to check Constant Contact for details.

Now that the weather seems to have turned for the better, we are getting many calls about when the docks will be ready for boats. The goal is to have them ready by Mothers Day, and when they are ready we will send out a notice on Constant Contact. Please do not bring your boat before the notice appears. The docks may appear to be ready when, in fact, there is still work to be done. If you are on a list for a dock or room, I understand that waiting is difficult, but members have until the end of April to let us know if they are giving up their room or dock.

Lastly, I want to extend my sincere sympathies to those members who have lost loved ones this year. You and your families have been in my prayers.

LETTER FROM THE COMMODORE When DLYC opens on April 29, it will have been 215 days, 17 hours, and a few minutes, give-or-take, since the Shipwreck Party closed out the 2015 season. But, who keeps track, anyway?

It’s been a long, cold, and dreary winter and everything at DLYC has been stowed, stacked, covered, cleaned out, turned off, and locked up. Now, spring is here, and it’s a time of renewal, unpacking, stocking up, turning on, and moving toward summer, the season of sunlight, vitality, long days, celebration, and just plain partying. It is what we wait for so patiently and impatiently. Then, five months from now, we’ll be saying, “It went by so fast! Where did summer go?” I hope we can also say, “But, it was great!”

Depending on when you choose to start, the reality is that we do have about five months to take advantage of all that DLYC has to offer through the spring and summer. I would encourage everyone to pack in as much as you can, make the most of your summer, and have no regrets at the end. You know, we all recite the age-old platitude, “Life is too short,” which is as undeniable as the fact that summer is too short for us in Michigan. So, my best wishes to everyone for the coming season, and let’s all enjoy our summer, and beyond, to the fullest. I hope that DLYC is a big part of your summer experience.

Finally, I’ve never been a Commodore before, so this is all pretty new to me. I get a really nice parking place and I get to write stuff that people might actually read. But, beyond that, I’m excited about all that is planned for the season; and, I want to thank and compliment all of the individuals and committees who have worked so hard to develop those plans for all of us. Speaking of plans, the Board of Governors has set a goal of having a Master Renovation Plan in place by the end of the summer, beginning with Phase II renovations, which we hope to begin over the winter, if all goes well. Without goals, a plan is just a wish, and we’ve all been wishing for a long time. It’s time to move forward.

Warm Regards,

Tom Muldary, Commodore

TOM THIERY COMMEMORATIVE

PAINTING OF THE

PLEASANT GROVE HOTEL

(CIRCA 1907-1920)

In honor of the 75th Anniversary of the Devils Lake Yacht Club, Pat and Tom Muldary commissioned artist Tom Thiery to paint a rendition of the Pleasant Grove Hotel as it may have looked around the turn of the 20th century. He created a beautiful autumn scene of the hotel and the old steam boats at the dock. The painting has been donated to the Pleasant Grove Hotel Historical Society (PGHHS), and will be framed and put on display in the Club.

One hundred fifty (150) prints will be signed and numbered by the artist, and will be offered for sale by the PGHHS at a cost of $100 plus any applicable sales tax. All proceeds from sales will be reserved for the Phase II renovation. Approximately 20 copies have been pre-ordered, and we are expecting that the prints will sell out quickly. To order your copy, you may contact Mike Clark at [email protected] or Pat Muldary at [email protected]

The black-and-white photo below does not do justice to the painting, but it may give an idea. For now, you’ll just have to imagine stunning fall colors against a crystal blue lake, and then visualize where it would look best in your home!

A FEW MORE FRIENDLY REMINDERS

Exercise classes as well as sailing and swimming lessons will begin in June. Updated details will be available in the next newsletter, the DLYC website, and in the office.

Please remember that you may not bring food and beverage on the club grounds during hours of restaurant operations. When the restaurant is closed (e.g., weekends in May), picnicking is encouraged and fully permitted. Members are allowed to bring their own food and beverages to their boats and rooms.

For the safety of our members and children, bottles and glassware are prohibited on the dock and beach areas.

Michigan law prohibits smoking in food service establishments, which includes the deck area, where we have noted some complaints from members.

Spring is a great time to promote DLYC to your friends and relatives. Have your potential new member contact the manager to arrange for a meeting and tour.

PHASE II RENOVATION

In 2006 the Club renovated our outdated kitchen. A loan was secured for $300K and a capital assessment was put in place to pay for the project. In 2009 the Flag Room, restrooms, and foyer were renovated, thereby greatly improving the appearance and function of those areas. Our mortgage was refinanced to the original sum of $300K. The entire membership was enlisted in the renovation goal through the annual capital assessment, their generous contributions to the annual auction, and completion of member surveys. Our mortgage was paid off in 2014, and we have saved a significant amount for a downpayment to begin the next phase of renovations.

Commonly called Phase II, this would be the next step, not the final project. While a design has not been finalized, we believe that we have a solid basic concept with which to proceed—one that addresses our current and future needs and which is in keeping with member suggestions to keep the Club family-friendly, maintain a foyer area, improve bar function and flow, and enhance the dining and deck areas.
