AQHA’s Clone Ban IllegalBy Bobby Cervantes Two Texas Panhandle horse owners fi led a federal lawsuit Monday asking a judge to overturn a ban on cloned horses in the world’s largest equine breed registry. Canadian rancher Jason Abraham and Amarillo veterinarian Gregg Veneklasen allege in the suit the American Quarter Horse Association’s Rule 227, which bars cloned horses from the AQHA registry, illegally curbs competition and puts cloned-horse owners at an economic disad-vantage. Abraham and Veneklasen — who own an undisclosed number of cloned quarter horses or offspring — claim the rule violates federal antitrust laws that prohibit any entity from monopolizing commerce without a legitimate reason. The Amarillo-based AQHA passed the rule in 2004. “Without exception, DNA tests confi rm that the plaintiffs’ horses are quarter houses,” according to the complaint. “But for Rule 227 and the defendant’s unlawful enforcement of it, the horses that plaintiffs seek to register would be eligible for registration with the (AQHA).” Rule 227 states, “horses produced by any cloning process are not eligible for registration.” An association offi cial did not return messages Monday. The AQHA issues and maintains pedigree records of all American quarter horses. The American quarter horse market includes 8,000 sanc-tioned races each year, the suit said, and those events doled out more than $129 million in purse money last year. The organization reported assets of more than $93 million as of September, the lawsuit said. “Denial of registration has grave economic consequences to horse owners,” the suit said. “With the power to control output is the power to control price.” The suit said the association has recognized advancements in breed-ing technologies in recent decades, including allowing the registration of horses that were produced through artifi cial insemination. Abraham and Veneklasen said their cloning process, somatic cell nuclear testing, is the most recent method of selective breeding, which is similar to in vitro fertilization and artifi cial insemination processes widely used in animal reproduction. The cloned-horse owners’ suit said the process does not alter the genetic makeup of horses, which still are born in “traditional ways.” “There is no genetic manipulation of the animal,” the lawsuit said. “No genes are added, taken away or manipulated. A clone is a genetic twin of the original animal. The offspring of clones are not clones.” Cloning also offers health benefi ts to quarter horses, which can be affected by at least nine equine diseases linked to genetic mutations, the suit said. Specifi cally, the chance of quarter horses acquiring two of the most prevalent diseases — a muscle ailment that can cause paralysis

and a fl esh disorder that can cause a horse to shed its skin — can be signifi cantly reduced through cloning, Abraham and Veneklasen said in their suit. Since 2006, some association members have supported a rule change on cloned horses that DNA can confi rm are quarter horses, but the group has postponed any decision on the measure, the suit said. In February, the group’s Stud Book and Registration Committee and its executive committee considered a reversal of Rule 227, and the boards were supportive of the change, the suit said. But at an association meeting a month later, the suit said, an un-named former AQHA president and “infl uential breeder” objected. “Through the use of intimidating remarks and references to the im-mortality of cloning as a reproductive tool, he threatened that ‘AQHA will allow cloning over my dead body,’” according to the lawsuit. He also made remarks about “the anti-competitive” result of the associa-tion refusing to register clones and their offspring, the plaintiffs alleged. “Following this tirade, he moved to take no action on the proposed rule change and the debate was over,” the suit said. --Courtesy Amarillo Globe-News

TheSixth Annual Triple Turn Classic, held April 21-22 in the All Seasons Indoor Arena in Bowman, N.D., averaged 382 entries a day and awarded more than $25,000 in cash. Open average winners include Melissa Harding, 1D; Amy Holmes, 2D; Kendel Hofer, 3D; and Linda Nagel, 4D.

Saturday Open Harding and Im No Dainty Chic (“Digby”) turned in the fastest time of the event, a 15.135, to win Saturday’s Open. They also won a pair of Soft Ride boots for their average victory. “It was a good run,” said Harding, who hails from Beinfait, Saskatch-ewan, just 10 miles over the Canadian border. “My husband [Curtis] told me that I better look after him really good, because I’m never go-ing to have another horse that fast again!” Harding purchased a green-broke Digby as a 5-year-old in February 2008. The gelding, now 9, is by Fast Moon Chic, a son of Marthas Six

Moons, out of Call Me Dainty, by Mr Dark Jet. “He had about 60 days,” recalled the stay-at-home mom of two boys, ages 8 and 10. “You could get on and kind of lope a circle. I was just running him through the 4Ds. I kept him in the barn the next winter and he started clocking in the 1D. “He’s a bit of a controlled runaway. He’s very arrogant, and you can’t fi ght with him. He’s a cool dude to have around.” Harding hopes that the $1,111 she won with her two 1D runs at Bowman counts towards fi lling her WPRA permit. She would like qualify for the Badlands Circuit Finals this year. “My main goal is to keep him sound and healthy,” she said.

Sunday Open Desirae Weigel was “shocked” with her winning run of 15.137 aboard What A Relief (“Renegade”) on Sunday. The win was worth $878.

“I just started him on barrels last year,” said Weigel, who hails from Bismarck, N.D. “I’m pretty happy with how he fi nished there. “The fi rst day he clocked a 15.6 and I was pretty happy with that. I rode a little cautious since he was a newer horse and that was my fi rst time in that indoor pen at Bowman. I felt a little more confi dent on my second run.” Renegade, a 10-year-old bay roan gelding, is by Country John Red out of Impressive Nugget Go, by Par For Dell. He’s the third Country John Red-bred horse that Weigel’s owned. “I get along really well with that bloodline,” said the makeup artist and sales representative for Allure cosmetics. She won two state high school titles on one and competed in college on another. Renegade is the college horse’s replacement. “I do have my pro card and I plan to enter some of the rodeos in the Badlands circuit,” she said. “My other horse is 15, and he’s still running, but Renegade’s my main focus.”

Pro Rodeo Continued From Page 26PRO RODEO RUNDOWN:The World Standings held steady this past weekend even though the top three continued to battle. Lindsay Sears, who sits #3 with $65,381, won the biggest check of the weekend with her sorrel super mare, Martha (Sugar Moon Express). The world champions won Corpus Christi, TX and a nice one run check of $5,053. Also at Corpus Christi, Carlee Pierce used her time staying in Texas to get Rare Dillion down there and pull in a 4th place check of $2,274. That kept Pierce at #2 in the World at $71,054 just a little over $6k behind Brittany Pozzi who spent the weekend out west at Red Bluff, CA. Pozzi was busy winning average at Red Bluff on Yeah Hes Firen and racked up total winnings of $4,411 to keep her #1 spot in the world. Also, Fallon Taylor and her 6 year old mare, Flos Heir-ress were on a mission. The pair set the arena record at Red Bluff in the Second Round with a time of 17.07 then set the arena record at Lakeside, CA stopping the clock with a 16.94. Of course, the mare’s sire is Taylor’s NFR mount and legend-ary barrel sire, Dr Nick Bar and the dam, is another former NFR mount of Taylors, Flowers And Money, who is perhaps the best daughter of former leading barrel sire, On The Money Red, so it should come as no surprise that Flos Heirress would excel to the highest level in the barrel arena. Last year (2011) this same week of the year Brittany Pozzi was also #1 with $73,362.

Many people are used to seeing the Etbauer name tied to the saddle bronc riding but everyone in the Oklahoma area are getting used to seeing the Etbauer name in the barrel arena. Billy, Hollie and their 3 children (Kord, 15, Treg, 10 & Jacie 13) showed up to the Tri K Barrel Race at Lazy E Arena with 7 head of horses ready to win. By the end of the weekend, Kord, Treg, and Jacie had put their names on almost $2800 worth of checks. The weekend before at the OK State NBHA Finals, the Etbauer crew with Hollie helping had pulled in $4,174. That’s a whopping $7k for the Etbauers in the past two weeks! At the Tri-K Barrel Race, Kord won 6th in the 1D of the Open on Saturday and 1st in the 1D of the Open on Sunday on No Whisper. Jacie won 1st in the Open Friday on Whistle Bugs, and then won 1st in the Open on Saturday and 2nd in the Open Sunday on Whistles Spirit. Treg, chipped in by winning 5th in the 2D of the Open Friday and 7th in the 1D Open Saturday on No Trouble Whistlin. All 4 of their money winning horses were by the deceased senior stallion for the Et-bauers, No Whistle, and all 4 were raised on the Etbauer ranch, started by Billy and trained on the barrels by Hollie. Like Hollie said, “It’s like you have two kids going into the arena at once!” Now that Billy Etbauer, 5 time World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider and only PRCA member to earn $3 million in one event, has retired from riding broncs, the whole Etbauer family is involved full time in raising, training and running barrel horses. The Etbauers stand two stal-lions, PC Frosty Bid and Whistle At The Babes, and have a horse herd totaling close to 50 of their own horses and also run a recipient mare herd for Dee Gragg of Embryo Transfer Services. They pasture the mares throughout the year until around Thanksgiving. Then they bring the mares in and keep them under lights to prepare them for breeding until April. The Etbauer’s haul to the barrel races in their former polo cross horse trailer and the trailer can comfortably fi t 16 head. If you see the big trailer and a bunch of blue Express Ranch shirts, you better look for them at the pay window!

Big J Barrel Blast Announces Addition of Fifth Event Double J Productions announced today the addition of a fi fth event to its 2012 Big J Barrel Blast schedule. The event will be held August 3-5 at the Lone Wolf Ranch Arena in Cleveland, Missouri. This event will mark the fi rst Double J Productions event in Mis-souri. Lone Wolf Ranch Arena is located just minutes from the Kansas City metro. Double J Show Manager, Lynde Johnson, said, “We’re ex-cited to be adding a fi fth event to our 2012 schedule at the Lone Wolf Ranch Arena. The staff has been wonderful and the facility is excellent. This event will give barrel racers from outside our normal area a chance to see all that Big J Barrel Blasts have to offer.” The Big J Barrel Blast in Cleveland, Missouri will have a minimum of $2,500 in added money. Tentative Schedule for Battle in the Saddle Now Available

The 2012 event, held July 3-8 in Oklahoma City, will feature versatil-ity ranch horse competition, cutting, roping, cowboy mounted shoot-ing, barrel racing, working cow horse, ranch sorting, ranch pleasure, a ranch remuda challenge and the third annual World’s Greatest Horse-man Shootout. Battle in the Saddle will also host the 2012 Merial Ranch Sorting National Championships. In order to involve as many alliance events as possible, AQHA welcomed the Ranch Sorting National Championships as a new alli-ance partner. As a result, RSNC members who compete on American Quarter Horses have the chance to earn points and qualify for both an AQHA world championship show and the RSNC National Finals dur-ing the same class. Battle in the Saddle will also host the World’s Greatest Horseman Shootout, which puts one horse, one rider and one bridle together for four exciting western performance events. The open riders must exhibit their American Quarter Horses in four events: herd work, similar to cutting; rein work, similar to reining; steer stopping; and fence work. The Shootout will feature two riders per association – AQHA, National Cutting Horse Association, American Rope Horse Futurity Association, National Reined Cow Horse Association and Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association. This year, Shorty’s Caboy Hattery will donate a hat to the winner of the World’s Greatest Horseman Shootout at Battle in the Saddle. The winner will also be nominated to the 2013 NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman competition held in conjunction with the NRCHA Celebration of Champions in San Angelo, Texas. Battle in the Saddle is owned by Oklahoma State Fair and managed by the American Quarter Horse Association. All breeds are welcome, but American Quarter Horses competing will receive AQHA points. This year’s Battle in the Saddle will include $144,000 in added money, making more than $300,000 in purses. The event will once again be featured on RFD-TV. The barrel pattern is set and everyone in the race must follow the predetermined course. You can’t just decide to make bet-ter time by only turning two barrels.

So, too, it is with life. There are certain things and rules you can’t change no matter how much you’d like to. For example, driving in the proper lane of traffi c. For your own safety and the safety of others, you must follow the rules. Hebrews 12:1 tells us “...since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us...” Sometimes, we might feel that God has treated us unfairly in allowing us to carry certain burdens and responsibilities but He knows the end from the beginning and He will not let us have more than we can bear. If we just “stay the course,” pray and turn everything over to our Father God, we’ll see that He’ll make it all right in the end. We can’t let ourselves get caught up in the snares of envy when we see others appear to receive all that life has to offer without even trying. Envy is dangerous and blocks our blessings from God. And, many of those who seem to “have it all” are actually living lives of quiet

desperation. “Let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” (Galatians 6:9) Read Hebrews 10:36 where it tells us we need patient endur-ance to continue to do God’s will and then we will receive all that He has promised. Many times, people now are thankful for the things that they previously murmured and complained about. What satan intends for evil, God can turn to good. It’s a good thing to every day ask God help you be content with who you are and where you are. Remember this advice from Carrie Ten Boom, “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God!” Now, get out there and do your best at whatever race is set before you!
