I take pleasure in introducing the inauguralissue o SINDA Connections. I hope ourreaders will enjoy the new 12-page editionwhich is packed with highlights rom the

rst hal o the year. It also eatures our keyprogrammes, and some o our bene ciariesand partners. The Indian community has come a long way since 1991when SINDA was ormed. SINDA is now a household name

and is regarded as a signi cant and important organisationin Singapore. The overall educational achievements oIndian students have improved and the gap in educationalper ormance o the Indians against the national average hasnarrowed. The average household income o Indians hasalso increased.

In 2007, SINDA undertook a strategic review to streamlineour programmes and to chart our directions or the next

ve years. Encouraged by the tagline o ‘Keeping True– Staying Relevant’, we are committed to staying true toour mission while adapting to the evolving environment. We will also introduce programmes that are relevant andnecessary or the changing landscape. The three strategicthrusts or the next ew years will be strengtheningeducation, enhancing the amily unit and activelycollaborating with the community.

Education is and will continue to be our major ocus. But wealso realise that the educational goals can only be achievedby strengthening amilies and working with our existing andnew partners. My team at SINDA strongly believes that the

ocus on the three strategic thrusts will help the communityproduce ‘A Graduate in Every Family’.

As you fip through the pages o this newsletter, I hopeyou will be able to sense the energy and dynamism thathas in used our team.

Do enjoy reading this newsletter as much as we enjoyedbringing it to you.

Thank you.

Sel -motivated, con dent and ambitious. It has taken me along time to get to this point in my li e where I can use thosewords to describe mysel today.

I’ve aced many obstacles in my li e. I lost my ather when Iwas 14 years old. I later quit school to work at 7-Eleven tohelp my mother support the amily. I got married at the ageo 21.

Married li e was good and we were soon blessed with 2beauti ul daughters. Having quit my job to look a ter mychildren, I was very dependent on my husband.

Last year, my husband was diagnosed with late-stagepancreatic cancer. He passed away soon a ter. It was aterrible time. My two girls really missed their ather. I crieda lot and nearly broke down, worried about the uture. But

or my children’s sake, I pulled mysel together and beganlooking or a job.

A riend o my late husband re erred me to SINDA. With themoral support and assistance o a SINDA counsellor, I wasable to gradually overcome my grie . He let me talk through

my sadness and worries. Having a sympathetic listener, who provided me with moral support, helped me during thatdi cult time. I realised that I needed to pull mysel together, and began to put a plan in place.

First, I took advantage o the opportunity to enroll mydaughters or the STEP tuition classes in 2007. Mydaughters gained rom the extra help they received romthis programme and were able to concentrate on theirstudies better.

Next, I ound a ull-time job with Healthway MedicalGroup. Initially, I was hesitant to take up the o er becauseI assumed it would be a stress ul job having been out othe work orce or so long. I thought I would not be able todo the job also because I had never done this sort o jobbe ore. But I got a lot o encouragement rom my operationsmanager. In time, I ound mysel doing well and trueenough, in November last year, I was sent or the GeneralPractitioner (GP) Assistant Course (Basic) and was awardeda Primary Care Academy (PCA) Certi cate. Last month, Iattended an Intermediate level course.

I have learnt to be independent and I’m teaching mydaughters just that. I constantly encourage them to studyhard. Good grades will lead to good jobs and they’ll be ableto support themselves in the uture.

I believe there’s “no point crying over spilt milk, no pointcrying over the thing that’s already gone. Think o the

uture.” Everything I do now, I do or my children. Thesacri ces I make are or their sake. I want to be a goodexample and a good mother to them.

When I started Primary6, I began to worry about my Primary School LeavingExamination (PSLE). That was when I heard my schoolwas organising a Project TEACH programme in school.

As my parents were worried about my PSLE too, theyencouraged me to join SINDA’s programme.

My teacher, Mdm Jasmine, taught new and easy methodsand ormulas or Maths. She gave di cult English and

Science questions. She also gave PSLE papers to see i Iwas ready or them.

Because o the small class size in the SINDA programme,Mdm Jasmine could concentrate on everyone. She alsomade the class very enjoyable. I looked orward to every class.

I began to improve and started getting As in my exams. Istarted to eel more con dent. My parents also started to

And answers were what SINDA was lookingor when it commissioned Mr Tony Lai

and his team at The Idea Factory in July2007 to conduct a Strategic Review o the

organisation. This exhaustive review involvedeveryone, rom our board o trustees andexecutive committee, right down to theadministrative assistants and cleaners.

At the end o seven months, The Idea Factory helpedSINDA establish greater clarity o every programme andservice. It invigorated the entire organisation with newideas and resh determination. At the end, The Idea Factoryunderwrote the cost o the entire project.

Now a “Friend o SINDA”, Tony hopes “we’ll progress

rom being ‘just riends’ to the dating stage and beyond.”He and his team have ‘dated’ many people and companies. He believes it’s all about chemistry and good taste.Taste, as only some companies will like them. Andchemistry will decide i a relationship ensues. “We wantto do remarkable work so no un working [sic] with peoplewith the wrong chemistry.”

Working with SINDA has also given The Idea actorya better understanding o the word ‘multiracial’.

“We o ten speak o multiracialism as a concept. But wesaw it as a dilemma. While the problems may be uniqueto SINDA, the answers are not necessarily only rom withinthe community. It takes a multiracial approach to solve eachother’s problems.”

Tony wears many hats: guide, problem-solver, thinker, innovator and even worrier! He reasons, “These roles arenecessary, depending on the project. You can’t just haveone skill or you’ll die. Li e requires all that. And also thecollective wisdom o the team.”

The interview rounds up with a question that stumps him. What gives you the greatest satis action? “I don’t knowyet,” Tony pondered. “Satis action or me means beingpart o something larger and more meaning ul. And rightnow, it’s The Idea Factory because we have the opportunityto participate in some amazing journeys. And this is verysatis ying. I don’t want to de ne it more speci cally than

that, so when new things emerge, it’s unexpected andunexpectedly wonder ul.”

SINDA sincerely wishes to thank Tony and his team or their generosity and look orward to working with themon uture projects.

SINDA Star Award 2006 winnerMr Letchumanan is an inspiring individualwho turned obstacles into stepping stones.

A role model or youths, Mr Letchumananbelieves that one has to strive or successand have passion and drive in li e.

Coming rom a poor amily, li e was no bed o roses orhim. From the time he was young, Mr Letchumanan’sather slogged at a construction site to support the amily

while his mother stayed in India and looked a ter his twosisters. He was mostly looked a ter by his neighbours andparents o schoolmates.

Mr Letchumanan learnt the meaning o hardship youngas he witnessed his ather’s struggles to eed the amilyhere and in India. This made him aware o the di culties

aced by the lower income group, and he promised himselto make a di erence when he grew up. He strived againstbeing a victim o circumstances, and worked hard to reach

his goal.Fresh out o army, he signed up with the Police Force. Hepursued his GCE ‘A’ Levels while in service and earned aSingapore Police Force Bursary to pursue his degree. Hestarted his career as a constable and steadily rose to beInspector o Police. A ter serving 14 years in the PoliceForce, he joined the corporate sector and establishedhimsel as a success ul businessman. However he did not

sever his ties with the Force. He continued to serve in theVolunteer Special Constabulary o the Singapore PoliceForce. Another 14 years later, he was promoted to becomethe Commander o this division and now holds the ranko Deputy Assistant Commissioner.

A well-known and well-liked person within the Indiancommunity, Mr Letchumanan is also a generous individualwho gives reely to many in need.

Although becoming success ul in li e was one o hisgoals, Mr Letchumanan got more personal ul llment

rom helping individuals and amilies come out o thepoverty cycle. He sat on the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Templecommittee or twenty- ve years, helping destitute Hinduswho needed help. He is also a veteran volunteer withSINDA, chairing the Case Review Panel o the Familyand Youth Development Division (FYDD).

When asked about his advice or youths, he said thatmany Indian youths tend to take everything or granted.“This mindset should change. The real world is challengingand ast paced and thus, they have to be adaptable andwork hard.’

He also raised the issue that although in most areas,Indians are improving and rising above the national areas, there is a small proportion o Indians not breaking out othe poverty cycle. He hopes to contribute towards helpingthose in need.
