Vision Sindecuse Health Center utilizes coordinated health services to provide efficient and effective care that meets the ever-changing physical, social, cultural, spiritual, emotional, and intellectual needs of the Western Michigan University community. Our Practice Sindecuse Health Center offers convenient, cost-saving services with an experienced, multidisciplinary staff dedicated to maintaining and improving patient health. We provide evaluation and treatment for a variety of illnesses and injuries, preventive health check-ups, periodic health monitoring, as well as health promotion opportunities that enhance individual and community health.

Our providers have specialty certification in college health care and work in collaboration with nurse practicioners and physician assistants to provide health-related services.
AppointmentsAppointments are highly encouraged – simply call the appointment desk during clinic hours. Please keep in mind you must call to cancel or reschedule an appointment – there is a charge for noncancelled or missed appointments. Same Day Care ClinicThis clinic is especially for injuries or acute illnesses that cannot wait for an appointment. Plan on your visit taking longer than a scheduled appointment. Life-threatening emergencies should always be taken to a hospital emergency room.
Walk-in Nursing CareReceive important and cost-effective immunizations (including hepatitis B, HPV, tetanus, meningitis vaccine, and flu vaccine when in season), allergy injections, blood pressure checks, pregnancy testing, pediculosis exams, and tuberculosis (TB) tests (except Thursdays).

There are several immediate care centers nearby that are open until 10 p.m. for non-emergencies and other minor health problems. Check your phone book or online for listings.

Seasonal Flu ClinicsFlu clinics are held occasionally at convenient locations on campus. Details can be found online at sindecuse.com.
InjectionsInjections such as Depo-Provera and vitamin B12 are available. Patient must have a prescription from Sindecuse or an outside provider.
Preventive Health ServicesAnnual health appointments with a preventive focus include a comprehensive medical review, physical exam, and discussion with a clinician about screening tests and immunizations appropriate for your age and health condition. Results will be sent to your community primary care provider for continuity of care.
Women’s and Men’s HealthWe offer physical exams, Pap smear screening, colposcopy (for abnormal Pap smears), contraceptive services, pregnancy testing, as well as evaluation and treatment of sexually transmitted infections.

Our International Travel Clinic provides immunizations and comprehensive education to enhance your travel experience and minimize risks of disease and illness.
International certificates of immunization are provided. The Travel Clinic is an official yellow fever immunization center.

Lab & X-Ray (DIAGNOSTICSERVICES)
269.387.3245LaboratoryOur lab processes a variety of studies by clinician order. A few of the things we test for include: pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, cholesterol, strep throat, mono, influenza, and other tests routinely performed at health centers and labs. We also work with patients who require lab work for medication use and in-house drug testing. Results of many tests are reviewed by the evaluating clinician at the time of the visit. Appointments are preferred for your convenience. Tests not done at Sindecuse are performed by our reference lab. Reference lab tests may incur a separate charge.

Occupational Medicine
269.387.3290Sindecuse Health Center professionals provide WMU faculty and staff evaluation and treatment of work-related injuries/illnesses, rehabilitation services, coordination of ergonomic evaluations, and occupational health examinations.
Psychiatry Services
269.387.3290 Psychiatry services include outpatient evaluation and medical management for mood, adjustment, anxiety, and thought disorders. Comprehensive assessment and management for attention deficit disorder is offered. Psychiatry services are available to students only by referral from our primary care clinicians.

CPR Classes
269.387.3263We offer CPR training to WMU students, faculty, staff and non-WMU community members. The course consists of a four-hour class which provides certification in Child, Infant and Adult CPR, choking, and AED (automated external defibrillator) training.
Nutrition Counseling
269.387.3263Registered dietitians are available by appointment to help assess food intake and eating patterns, and to assist in designing a food management plan to improve health, well-being, and self-esteem.
Health Coaching
269.387.3263Health coaching is a free service that offers assistance to individuals who are in the process of developing a healthier lifestyle. Health coaches work with individuals on how to adopt an active role in obtaining their health goals while offering support, motivation, and encouragement.
Alcohol Risk Reduction
269.387.3257The Alcohol Risk Reduction program provides programming and resources for the prevention and reduction of alcohol-related harms at Western Michigan University. We utilize evidence-based approaches, focusing on environmental strategies and high-risk drinking behavior.
Light Therapy
269.387.3263Doses of artificial light are administered to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also known as the winter blues. An appointment is required.
Massage Therapy

Nationally-certified Sexual Health Peer Educators address sexual health and sexuality. They encourage other students to make healthy choices about sex and relationships through classroom presentations, interactive workshops, and consultations. Please call to schedule a presentation.

F.I.R.E! Sexual Assault Peer Education

Fighting Ignorance and Rape through Education is a group of nationally-certified peer educators committed to educating their peers and others in the WMU community about sexual assault and available support services for survivors. The program vision is to create a campus culture that effectively responds to sexual assault in an attempt to eradicate it from the WMU campus. Western Michigan University Sports Medicine Clinic
269.387.3248It is not a requirement to be an athlete, nor does your injury/condition need to be sports-related—although competitive athletes and weekend warriors are, in fact, treated at the WMU Sports Medicine Clinic. These services are open to all University students, faculty/staff and dependents, as well as the Southwest Michigan community. Our goal is to safely return you to your desired activities as soon as possible.

Physician Evaluation Our physician team of sports medicine physicians, orthopedic surgeons, and a podiatrist specialize in both non-operative and surgical evaluation and care of conditions including joint and muscle pain, sprains and strains, fracture care, and overuse or repetitive injuries.
Physical Therapy and Athletic Training ServicesThe rehabilitation team of athletic trainers and physical therapists specialize in the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of orthopedic conditions—anything from joint sprains, muscle strains, fractures, back and neck injuries to post-surgical procedures. Casting, bracing, splinting, orthotics, and rehabilitation supplies are also available. Referrals from community physicians are welcome.

Convenient LocationsSindecuse Health Center Our main 3500 ft2 clinic on the lower level of the health center houses our physician offices as well as a large and well equipped physicaltherapy and athletic training rehabilitation clinic.
Student Recreation Center Our satellite physical therapy and athletic training rehabilitation clinic is located on the first level of the SRC. Specialty services also include preventive taping, sports injury checks, and bracing are also provided at this location to intramural sports, club sports, and WMU Department of Dance program participants.

Student Insurance Program University Student Insurance Program (USIP)
269.387.3266With constantly rising health care costs in the United States, all students are highly encouraged to carry health insurance. For those in need of insurance, university-sponsored policies are available to all WMU students. These policies are underwritten by Aetna Student Health and incorporates the Aetna PPO Network. The plans provide coverage for the majority of charges incurred due to illness or injury that occur on and off campus and includes special cost-saving features to keep the coverage as affordable as possible. Specific details explaining these policies are available at sindecuse.com – click the link for insurance. If further assistance is needed, the Insurance Manager may be contacted by e-mail at [email protected] or at Sindecuse Health Center Monday–Friday.
Fees & Payment
269.387.3291Sindecuse charges moderate fees for clinician and nursing visits, laboratory/x-ray services, prescriptions, sports medicine and physical therapy services. With a wide variety of payment options, students should never let finances become a barrier to seeking health care. Please call for current fee information.
Sindecuse Health Center accepts cash, check, MasterCard, Visa, and Discover. WMU students may charge fees $5 and greater to their University Banner account. Charges on the student WMU Banner account will incur a minimum of $3 convenience fee if paid by credit card. Please review the WMU policy for payment options and fees. A service charge is assessed by the University for any unpaid charges over 45 days. WMU employees may utilize ExpressPay – payroll deduction for fees $5 and greater. Transactions less than $5 should be paid at time of service. WMU occupational health visits for work-related illness or injury are covered by Workers’ Compensation.

WMU Employee EligibilityBenefits-eligible WMU employees, retirees, spouses and dependent children age 12 years and above* are eligible to use all health center services except psychiatry. Employees and dependents covered by the BCBS PPO plan will have most charges billed directly to the University. Dependents covered by other insurance plans may use health center services but are responsible for payment.
ConfidentialityVisits to the health center are confidential and separate from the rest of your University records. The confidentiality of your visit and your medical records is essential to providing the highest quality health care. Under penalty of law, your medical records or any information about you may only be released with your authorization except in certain cases specified by law. Health care providers are required by law to report certain communicable diseases (e.g., measles) to the Michigan Department of Community Health. Otherwise, information from the medical record is never shared with any area of the University, administrator, faculty, or staff member without your consent or as required by law.
