Chinatown Heritage Centre

Life of the ethnic Chinese in early Singapore was simple and almost everyone lived in rented cubicles of shophouses, which were often overcrowded and disease-stricken. It is fitting therefore, that the Chinatown Heritage Centre occupies three shophouses at the ethnic quarters of Chinatown, newly restored to house memories and untold stories of Singapore’s early forefathers. Each level of the Centre takes you to a different time in the history of Chinatown and allows you to trace the lives of its early occupants. The hard life of the migrants resulted in many of them seeking solace in the four evils: opium smoking, prostitution, gambling and secret societies. But the celebration of life too was present, and Chinatown was always abuzz with activity and festivity. The Centre was re-created based on the recollections of former residents, as are the exhibits and displays, giving visitors an authentic and personal account of life in Chinatown. Guided tours of the Gallery are conducted on the hour. Meanwhile, have a cuppa at the Centre’s Kopi Tiam or select a memento at the retail shop from a range of unique traditional souvenirs such as hand-sewn Chinese quilted blankets, traditional miniature sewing machines and clogs.

Thian Hock Keng Temple

Thian Hock Keng, the "Temple of Heavenly Happiness" is the oldest Hokkien Chinese temple in Singapore. It was constructed from 1839-42 and dedicated to Ma Zu (Ma Cho Po, or Lin Mo), the Chinese goddess of the sea. Sailors would seek her advice before embarking on voyages because of

Page 5: SINGAPORE Sentosa · 2011-04-01 · Underwater World The Underwater World Singapore is the best place to view rare marine creatures and exotic fish. The Underwater World oceanarium

the widely held belief that she could predict the weather. The cult of Ma Zu supposedly began in 987 A.D. when the young Ma Zu died at the age of 27. Villagers on Meizhou Island heard beautiful music and saw a brilliant rainbow. After this, fishermen in danger would come home with tales describing how a young woman in red saved their lives at sea. After this, fishermen set up altars to Ma Zu and worshipped her image. Thian Hock Keng was financed by the wealthy philanthropist Tan Tock Seng. A timber calligraphy panel presented by Emperor Guang Xu of the Qing Dynasty in 1907 can be found at the temple. The street on which the temple sits, "Telok Ayer," means "Water Bay" in Malay, indicating that the temple once sat at the edge of the sea. Land reclamation has pushed it far inland.

Once the site of many prisoner-of-war camps during the Japanese Occupation, Changi has since gone down in history as a place of significance and suffering. Whether it is on the Death Railway or the countless labour camps, this tour commemorates the fight of brave men and women during battle and internment. The tour begins with a visit to the Changi Chapel and Museum, to recount the events of World War II. The Changi Chapel and Museum is housed within the open-air courtyard of the new museum and is a symbolic replica of the many chapels that were built during the Japanese Occupation. First built in 1988 by Changi Prison inmates, this pilgrimage site stands today as a monument for those who stood with unflinching faith and dignity in the face of seemingly hopeless odds during those dark years and this place is used as a yearly meeting place for ex-prisoners of war (POW). Changi Chapel and Museum has become one of the most famous tourist attractions in Singapore where the families of prisoners of war make it a point to visit this famous landmark. Letters, photographs, drawings and personal effects displayed in the Changi Museum give an insight into the lives and thoughts of the 50,000 civilians and soldiers who were imprisoned in Changi and one of the museum's main attractions is the replica of The Changi Murals, a series of magnificent wall paintings recreated from the originals painted by bombardier Stanley Warren. The best picture of this grand building can be captured by standing in front of the Malayan Railway Administration Building which is located opposite this railway station. It was extensively renovated in 1988 to provide air-conditioned comfort and modern facilities for rail passengers and also linked it to the General Post Office in Dayabumi. From this train station, passengers can travel to most major cities and towns on Peninsular Malaysia's west coast and to Tumpat on the east coast. There are also train services to Singapore and Thailand and it is packed with travellers during the festive season. One of the main attractions here is the former Station Hotel, now known as the Heritage Station Hotel, which can be seen within the station building.

thousand people. Across the road you can see the remarkable Pusat Islam Malaysia which is the Islamic Centre.

This museum was built on the site of the old Selangor Museum. The National Museum is a palatial structure adopting the style of old Malay architecture. Its imposing entrance is flanked by murals depicting aspects of Malaysian culture and history. Inside there are exhibits on local history, culture and traditions, arts and crafts, economic activities, currency, weapons and local flora and fauna. It was built in 1909, designed by British architecture A.B. Hubbocks, easily making it the oldest mosque in the city and this Moorish-Colonial styled mosque is the pride of the nation with its graceful archways, minarets, domes and Gothic pillars. The best time for a good photograph is when sunset falls on its minarets of layered pink and cream bricks.

House of Parliament

The Parliament of Malaysia is the national legislature of Malaysia, based on the Westminster system of Parliament. It consists of the Dewan Rakyat (House of Representatives or literally People's Hall, in Malay) and the Dewan Negara (Nation's Hall in Malay; however, it is commonly referred to as the Senate). One important aspect about this temple is that the materials and the artisans were all brought in from China.
