Shopping is one of Singapore’s national pastimes, and you couldn’t have picked a better time to be here in this amazing city if you’re looking to nab some great deals. The Great Singapore

Sale (known as ‘the GSS’ to locals) is a highlight of the year for shopaholics, with retailers discounting original prices by anything up to 70%. You’ll find great deals on just about

everything, from fashion to jewellery, electronics to toys, even spa treatments, hotel stays, restaurants and bars, and visits to local attractions; it’s a bargain hunter’s dream!

The Red Dot may be small in size, but there are numerous shopping districts to discover and

explore, from the glossy designer stores lining Orchard Road, to the offbeat quirkiness of local boutiques in some of Singapore’s hippest neighbourhoods. For more information on

the best shopping spots, take a look at the handy guides inside.

At some point, you’ll want to leave the shops and malls for authentic local experiences in Singapore. Whether you have a week to dive deep or a weekend to scratch the surface, you’ll

discover Singapore’s secrets at every turn. There are rich cultural experiences, stylish bars, innovative restaurants, hawkers serving authentic local dishes, incredible landscapes and so much more to discover. For further inspiration, take a look inside at the top 10 things to do

during the GSS.

world, you can rest assured all of your transactions will be efficient, cost-effective and secure. What’s more, you’ll receive additional promotions, offers, benefits and more during the

tickets vary from $1.40 to $2.70. Bus fares start from as low as 79 cents. Try to have exact fare as bus drivers do

not give change. TIPPING

It is not usual practice to tip in Singapore, although it is

appreciated by service staff. Most hotels and restaurants quote prices as “++,” which

includes 10 per cent service charge and 7 per cent goods

and services tax (GST).

ORCHARD ROAD Any shopaholic worth their salt knows that

Orchard Road is the place for your shopping pilgrimage. With swanky shopping malls

lining the entire stretch, your only question will be: where to begin? Find big-name

brands and high-street favourites at ION Orchard and Paragon, and head to Orchard

Central to find some of the best local designers Singapore has to offer.

TIONG BAHRU

Old-world charm meets offbeat quirkiness in Singapore’s hippest neighbourhood: Tiong Bahru. Pound the history-laden pavements

of Eng Hoon Street, Moh Guan Terrace, Seng Poh Road, and Chay Yan Street for an eclectic mix of fashion, homewares, books,

and everything else in between.

KAMPONG GLAM This former Arab enclave is now a must-visit for any fashionista seeking unique finds at

wallet-friendly prices. Look out for Haji Lane: a deceptively innocuous street offering one-of-a-kind apparel, accessories, and

hole-in-the-wall boutiques. And don’t forget to take a stroll along the parallel stretches of Kandahar Street and Bali Lane where you’ll

find more niche, boutique stores. Done with shopping? Check out the numerous

museums, national monuments, and temples that line the streets too!

CHINATOWN

Straddling the line between old and new is Chinatown, the heritage-rich enclave that’s

buzzing all year round. But make no mistake: this kitschy tourist hotspot is also home to

hidden shopping gems. Get your hands on stylish threads unique to Singapore that

aren’t your run-of-the-mill high street finds. Look out for Amoy Street and Club Street in

particular!

MARINA BAY Undoubtedly, Marina Bay is Singapore’s

swankiest shopping district with glitzy malls peppered all around the city centre. The crown jewel of the area? The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, of course, where

shoppers can get their designer fix with high-end luxury labels like Maison Martin Margiela, Diane von Furstenberg, Armani,

and Moschino – credit cards, beware!

Further North towards the City Hall district lies a host of retail options, and new to the

scene is Capitol Piazza, a swish shopping complex where the historic Capitol Theatre once stood. Hit the racks of trend-setting

international and local boutiques that’ll have you reaching for your wallets.

HARBOURFRONT Leave the hustle and bustle of the city centre and head south to VivoCity. This ginormous mall is home to international

high street brands and local gems you won’t find elsewhere. And once you’ve maxed

out the plastic, cross the bridge to Sentosa island to hit the beach and take in the

dazzling array of tourist attractions.
