INTRODUCTIONSingapore Jewellery Design Award is a vocational service programme which aims to:

• Encourage the creation of jewellery designs in line withmarketneeds;

• Recogniseaspiringyoungdesigners;

• PromoteJewelleryDesigninAsia

This competition opens to all students of design schools in Asia, excluding those who are currently under employment in the jewellery sector. It seeks to develop the potential of young designers and to enable exchanges between students.

Thirty outstanding designs including the winning designs, would be showcased in the Singapore International Jewellery Show. This enables the students’ designs to make their first appearance in an international arena.

The most outstanding designs would be selected and made into jewellery to be marketed alongside with jewellery from leading jewellers.

The ultimate validation of a successful design is market acceptance. Winners would have the satisfaction of knowing how many pieces are sold at the end of the year from the date of the competition.

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT OF SINGAPOREJEWELLERSASSOCIATION

Congratulations to all the finalists and winners of the Singapore Jewellery Design Awards (SJDA) 2011. This year, I am delighted to see more creative and outstanding designs received from students. If our students continue to strive for excellence, I am sure we will be able to submit our winners to International Jewellery Design Excellence (IJDE) Award on the horizon.

*IJDE Award, organized by Hong Kong Trade Development Board, provides a platform for international jewellery designers to exchange experiences and compete for the highest honour – “Champion of the Champions”.

I am also pleased to inform that our Association had embarked on Local Enterprise and Association Development (LEAD) programme from the beginning this year to elevate the jewellery industry. Of the four enhanced strategic thrusts that we have developed, one will focus strongly on SJDA and the development of jewellery design talents. To attract more aspiring talents, our Association will be extending its invitation to regional countries for their participations in this competition.

SJDA 2012 has undergone a facelift and you can look forward to a new look in 2012, such as online submission, online judging and prize money for the top winners. You can also visit us on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

With all the new strategic thrusts in place, I am confident that we could inspire more innovative and creative jewellery designs and introduce Singapore as a distinctive Jewellery Design Hub.

Last but not least, a big thanks to our key partner, Rotary Club of Singapore East for its continuing support; all sponsors who supported this project, institutions, agencies, judges as well as the committee members. With our shared aspiration, I am sure SJDA will grow to become a distinguished Jewellery Design Award in this region.

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT OF ROTARY CLUB OFSINGAPOREEAST

It is always very meaningful and heartening when we revisit our past.

When Rotary Club of Singapore East initiated the 1st Rotary Jewellery Design Competition it did so because of the strong support of our Past President Charles Chan who tirelessly held on to his belief that this competition will eventually one day grow into a regional competition to help identify and mould future jewellery designers from Asia.

When RC Singapore East handed over this competition into the able hands of the Singapore Jewellers Association it did so with a strong conviction that by doing so this competition will certainly grow by leaps and bounds.

Today this competition with its very high standards of design received has truly become a regional one in terms of participation. I notice that for this year we have 66 participants from China, Hong Kong and Singapore submitting a total 219 Designs.

On behalf of Rotary Club of Singapore East I would like to congratulate Singapore Jewellers Association of its foresight in accepting our offer to take full control of this competition.

We are confident that in the not too distant future SJA will certainly develop this competition into a Premier Event for budding Jewellery Designers in Asia.

In every competition there can only be a handful of winners and our advice to the rest of the participants is to “believe in yourself ” and there will always be a light for you at the end of the tunnel.

Best Wishes

James D GomezPresident Rotary Club of Singapore East

My Voice“It is a great honour for me to be one of the selected winners of the Singapore Jewellery Design Awards again. It was a big surprise for me as it has once again proven my work. Because of this award, I had my first chance to visit Singapore last year, which left a wonderful memory in my heart. This challenged me to participate in Singapore Jewellery Design Awards 2011.

Many thanks to the judges and the manufacturing sponsor - without your help and appreciation, my design will not be produced. Thanks to the Singapore Jewellers Association for organising this international award. This is a platform which allows me to exchange with students at international level. And thanks to my school, parents and my friends - because of their support, I am determined to do better.

Last but not least, I have to thank God! As the Bible states “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13”
