It was a very wet and wintry morning and I had to make the decision of which car to take, Singer or modern. I thought the sky was clearing in the west so decided on the Singer. I

had arranged to take Stephen and Vida in the Singer so went to pick them up.

Most of the way to Hallet Cove it rained and my Singer does have a few spots where the rain finds its way in. Vida passed an extra coat over to Stephen in the passenger seat.

Eventually we arrived at Hallet Cove and found Kevin’s house. Most people had arrived and were in the garage looking over Kevin’s cars and a few were sitting inside.

Many comments and questions occurred while looking over Kevin’s Singer, Sunbeam Rapier

PRESIDENT’S REPORT – by Ivan Margitich

WOulD you believe it! I took the hood down on the Singer le Mans thinking Spring was here and suddenly

Winter returns. Instead of taking the car out for a run I decided a bit more preparation was needed in any event. Sue and I will be holidaying for a few weeks so the cars will be mothballed again.

I received an email from Andy Bull informing us of the RACV “Fly the Flag Heritage Tour” between the 17-23 March 2012. That is just before Easter. It takes in the SA towns of Mt. Gambier and Penola and nearby Victorian town of Hamilton. I must say that part of the trip sounds most interesting and its an area we could perhaps look at for future national rally’s or at least a weekend or more getaway for our club. I’m sure you will hear more about that later.

The winter months do not see us on many car runs. I look forward to seeing Singers on the road in the coming months.

Our monthly meetings have been well attended with updates on restorations and the committee planning for our future events.

Our last social event was a garage crawl to Kevin Keany’s at Hallett Cove where we all enjoyed a BBQ and inspection of his collection of vehicles including his Singer, Sunbeam Rapier and Riley. The weather was so bad sleet rain and fog prevailed in the morning so we ventured forth in our modern but Deidre Solly with passengers Stephen & Vida Schild bravely journeyed from Victor Harbor in Deidre’s Singer 4AD. By afternoon the sun shone through and we enjoyed the ocean views from Kevin’s front dining area. It was fitting Kevin had his home set up as he had entertained twelve hours earlier Christmas in July. We all enjoyed the day.

For my own part I’ve been steadily working on the woodwork on the 4AD Special. It has been a difficult job without any patterns, having to measure up, mock up and then make up the frames on a trial and error basis. More about that later.

Rob Martin has published a list of our spare parts which if not included in this edition of our magazine can be obtained by contacting Rob.

I remind you to look at our calendar of events for your participation or interest in Club activities.

Signing off for nowIVAN MARGITICH, President

SELLING PARTS TO INDIAby Drew Marshman

I RECEIVED an email from a person with an Indian sounding name

enquiring about parts for Singer 9 Roadsters, saying that he saw my ad “in Singergram 2011”.

He found it by net searching using key words for parts he wants and found my advertisement.

I didn’t realise any Singergrams are on the net!

After exchanging several emails he advised that he has a 1948 Singer 9A and that he used to buy parts from the late Trevor Cornelius in the uK.

Although the Singer and his family are in India, he is working in Qatar and has worked in Australia.

Joy googled his name and his employment information matched. I also found an online wanted ad from him in an old ASCO magazine.

He sent the money by Western union Money Transfer and I sent the parts.

Although it’s not recommended that you send money by Western union unless you know the seller, this method is safe and quick for the seller.

and Rover. Rumour has it that he was looking into another car interstate.

By now the weather was clearing and the BBQ was fired up for us to cook our gourmet delights.

Kevin had a long table arranged inside where we could eat and admire the view of the sea from his window.

After a great lunch and interesting conversation people began to head off to the movies or their running session etc.

Stephen, Vida and I left in my Singer, the only one that ventured out on the day.

Glad the home trip would not be so damp!

SAAB SONETT & SINGERS – by Stephen Bitmead

SINGERGRAM Page 6 SEPTEMBER 2011

AS some members may know, to “compliment” my vintage Singer, last year I imported a Classic car from the uSA, a 1972 SAAB Sonett. This was a long story in itself and

certainly a learning experience for me.

The car was bought over the internet, sight unseen. To help me decide on the car, the seller who was not very internet savvy, got a friend of his, Glenn Roberts an owner of a Concours standard 2 stroke Sonett, to email me some pictures. The deal was done and the SAAB I have is a great buy.

I communicated with Glenn recently letting him know how my car was going and mentioned my Singer as well. Here follows the result of this and shows how amazing coincidences can occur!

I have mashed his two emails together to make his story flow...

Firstly, let me introduce myself. I am Peter Roberts, father of Glenn with whom you have been communicating on the subject of SAAB Sonetts. Glenn has probably explained to you that his mother (Jean) and I were the first owners of the 1967 Sonett II that we purchased new in Melbourne, Florida. After many years of sports car rallying and other events we sold the car to Glenn. He subsequently restored the car to its present outstanding state.

Jean and I grew up in Sydney and met early in 1957. I introduced her to the Singer Car Club where she became a very active member.

I had bought my 1950 Singer 9 Roadster in 1953 and joined the Singer Car Club. At that time the Singer Car Club was a very competition-oriented organization and my Singer started to show the painful evidence of a lot of hard driving.

In 1957 I took the Singer off the road to restore it to its original beauty. The job was finished on the eve of our wedding in November.

You can see the results of the restoration in the included composite print below. The vehicle in the foreground is a model of our car carved out of a block of fruit cake to a scale of 1 inch to the foot, covered with sheet icing. We created it on our honeymoon in time for the Club Christmas party cake contest. We won!

During this year we made plans to undertake a 1 - 2 year working vacation around the world. After we married we consolidated the itinerary for the start of our trip which included selling our Singer 9.

We set sail in April 1958 for Canada on the S.S. Lakemba, a 10,000 ton freighter. The trip had taken a slow 5 weeks when we landed in Vancouver. We continued almost immediately by train to Toronto where we started looking for gainful employment. For Jean this happened with little delay. For me it took 3 months and required a move to Montreal. Our stay here was to be one year. Our original plans did not include

Page 7: Singergram vol 24 no 3 sep 2011

SINGERGRAM Page 7 SEPTEMBER 2011

SAAB SONETT & SINGERS – continued

moving to the USA because the requirements for obtaining the necessary working visa appeared insurmountable. We migrated to the US in August 1959 and set up residence in Sarasota, Florida on the west coast of that state

When we arrived in Sarasota we quickly became members of the local sports car club and during our stay here both Jean and I held one year terms as president of the club. We did the same thing when we arrived in Melbourne. We also joined the Sports Car Club of America and served as volunteer technical inspectors at the club’s race meetings In addition Jean and I were regular participants in the SCCA Time/Speed/Distance Rallies

I have never made an effort to track my Singer. I was not even aware that a register existed. To the best of my knowledge I do not have anything as basic as a vehicle serial number. But if I saw a car with a modified gear change lever (I am 6ft 2 inches tall) and a modified tail light assembly I might recognize it as mine. If you would prefer to have a picture of another view of the car (or one minus the cake) I am sure I can do that too.

Best regards, Peter Roberts.

The picture is fantastic, and I wonder if any member knows of what happened to Peter’s Singer.

Glenn would like to get Peter a ride in a Singer but I know of no one to contact on the uS East Coast.

let me know if you can help.

ANNUAL DINNER 2011 – by Jeff Vale

THANKS to the great organisational skills of Sue Matthews, our Annual Dinner once again proved a huge success.

Held at the Strathmore Hotel in the Balcony Restaurant, the dinner was very well attended and it was good to catch up with members and their partners over a very nice meal. Some chose the “Stonegrill” option of cooking their own meat at the table and this proved very satisfying for those participants.

Seating was a little tight as the restaurant was well patronised and with a long table for our members it was a little difficult to include everyone in every conversation. However, toward the end of the evening as the crowd of diners thinned, it was easier to move around and talk to people.

Our president, Ivan Margitich, addressed the club members and no-one was more surprised than myself when he announced that I had been awarded the “Club Member of the Year” trophy. It really is a great honour and I thank all who voted that I should receive this award.

I feel there are other members in our club who equally deserve this honour and I accept the award in the knowledge that without the patience of a loving wife and the help of many people on many occasions during the year, I may not have received it.

Thank you all.

SINGERS IN THE USA – continued by Stephen & Vida Schild

VIDA and I started our trip up the East Coast of the uSA in Miami and our itinerary was to drive up the East Coast of the united States to Canada and back down the centre

to Memphis, New Orleans and other places of interest on the way, then back to Miami and then home.

We called into many car museums and saw many British cars but no Singers. In Memory lane Museum, in Mooresville, there was a yellow Austin Taxi, with a Singer Bantam write up on the side, but no Singer. Nevertheless, it was a fantastic collection of cars, tractors, pedal cars, memorabilia, Nascars, model T Fords and lots of other vintage cars.

When we reached Canada we went through Montreal to a sleepy little Town called Hudson, where we had made arrangements via the North American Singer Club to meet with Pre-War Singer Specialist and Editor of the North American Singer Owners Club News, Philip Avis.

When we arrived, Philip had reversed his 1936 Singer le Mans out of the crowded shed into the driveway. The shed was crowded because it had all the toys that we would like in our shed, SINGERS!!!

They were everywhere. Where they did not fit into the shed, they were on trailers or next to the house covered with tarps. Singer Heaven !!!

Philip Avis’ beautiful 1936 Singer LeMans.

SINGERS IN THE USA – by Stephen & Vida Schild

Currently under restoration is his 28 Senior, which has had an earlier restoration, but Philip was intending to restore the vehicle back to its original interior and repaint. After a coffee made by Philip’s wife Andrea, we swapped a few stories, and showed the obligatory “brag photos” of our 4 AD Restoration.

Philip took me for a spin around the block in the le Mans. I do not know what was best, the sweet “burble” of the exhaust note of the car, or lovely quiet tree lined streets that we travelled on. It was a nice experience, and I would like to thank Philip for his hospitality and for taking the time to welcome us in his home town. We realise his time is precious and it was very much appreciated by my wife Vida and I.

Although we visited many car museums while we were in the uS and saw many other British cars as well as American and European cars, we never saw another Singer.

... Maybe next time when we visit the West Coast of the uS we will see more of the elusive Singers ...

More views of Philip Avis’ LeMans.

ALUMINIUM CASTINGS – by Denis Moreau

WHEN I brought home my 4AD, along with a quantity of boxes, I found I had no headlights and no tail lights. The headlights were easy to replace [although

expensive].

The tail lights, being an aluminium casting, needed some thinking about. I abandoned a world search and asked fellow club member Stephen Schild for a loan of his.

I went cap in hand to firms around Adelaide; only one was willing to help.

Cast Reproductions make, among other things [like Singer tail lights], replicas of the cast iron lace work seen on the verandahs of many old homes.

Alan Kay is the Director and was most helpful. If you need something in cast aluminium, contact him at Cast Reproductions.

THE ROADSTER FRONT – Hole Hunting

by Bill Haverly – From MASCOT January-February 1997

WHEN things go wrong, sometimes it’s little items on a car that cause as much trouble as the larger components. little holes, for instance, can be a hundred times more

important than their size would suggest, and give numerous problems if left unattended. An example of the table salt cellar when its outlets get blocked puts it in a nutshell. This little hole is the most fundamental part of the operation. As to the Roadsters little holes under scrutiny, all have the same thing in common - the need to be kept clear. Otherwise they could cause problems in starting, running or braking. For a guided tour of these pinholes lets start at the rear where the petrol filler cap presents a classic case. All petrol tanks need venting to prevent vapour lock occurring, most Roadsters have a small hole in the cap centre to enable air to enter as the tank level drops. With a blocked hole, the pump will eventually be unable to deliver, as a developing vacuum prevent the flow of fuel. Some Roadsters may have an internally vented cap in which a hole on the underside breathes out under the rim. But the principal is the same, and the need to keep it clear to avoid fuel starvation.Further down below on the axle casing top are two other slightly bigger holes around twelve inches from the flange at either end. Their purpose are as breather holes for the axle, preventing pressure build up which could force oil past the oil seal on its way to foul up the brake linings. That’s the theory anyway, and blocked holes could be the reason why the Roadster axle oil seal has such a tarnished reputation.Much scraping away of old paint or grunge is often necessary to locate them and something like a hatpin is a useful tool for the clean out.Whilst in this area, the brake drums are well worth a visit. There are four more little holes in each drum, set equally in the four corners of the drum recess. Once again, some poking around might be necessary to find them, for in 9 out of 10 cases brake lining dust will have clogged them up. Designed to let water out under pressure when wet weather conditions could severely affect the braking, a clear out around every 10,000 miles is a reasonable interval for attention. Check also the same holes in the front brake drums. The Solex 30 FAI carb fitted to Roadsters from the 4A-on is generally a reliable and trouble free unit, but can have problems forced upon it by a dirty petrol tank. You stop at traffic lights and the engine dies. The car starts and runs OK if you keep the revs up, until the next stop, then dies again. It will not tick over without increasing the revs. It’s an odds on bet that the pilot jet on the carb’s top left corner is blocked. The “get-you-home” solution is remove with a 2 A spanner and clear by blowing or with a fine fuse-type wire - the long-term answer is clean out the petrol tank or fit a concealed in line filter.

The last little hole to be investigated is the manifold drain pipe, which allows excessive petrol from the carb to drain away and prevent engine flooding and subsequent starting difficulties. Here, the common or domestic pin is the classic tool for clearing out the tapered end of this capillary tube. Every tool kit should have one!

ACTIVITIES IN THE UK – from Alan & Val Carter

FIFTEEN cars and 28 occupants attended llanerchindda Farm, Carmarthenshire, Mid Wales from 20th to 23rd May on a half board basis, the hosts ‘The Hadley Family’

Mum, Dad and two sons did all the hard work providing the routes and tulip style road maps and a fabulous time was had by all, which included a visit to the Red Kite feeding centre, where amongst all the normal Red Kites was a very rare albino kite. The kites swoop down, pick up food and take it away whereas the five buzzards that also came down for the food stayed on the ground to feed amongst the numerous crows. Another pleasing factor was the fact that all 15 cars behaved themselves over the week-end through the Welsh Black Mountains.

Singer National WeekendThis was held initially at The Sedgebrook Hall Hotel, Northampton which for Friday and Saturday evenings was completely full with Singer enthusiasts. Trips around the county of Northamptonshire were arranged for Thursday, Friday and Saturday the weather remained reasonably kind except for a few heavy showers. As it was the 60th anniversary of the Club the attendance was heavy high with members from Australia, Canada, uSA, France, Germany and 14 cars and occupants from Holland with a total of approximately 250 cars attending on Sunday at Boughton House where prizes were presented by the founder of the Club Keith McDowell.

HERE are another two members’ profiles. Many thanks for your participation. This information is purely to introduce yourself to other members and perhaps provide some

light entertainment! All questions are optional. More profiles will appear in the next issue of Singergram. Email the Editor if you require a form.

NAME: Ivan Margitich.

BORN: 24 May 1943. (Adelaide).

BRIEF HISTORY: Always lived in Adelaide. Married to Susan. Have two adult children and one dog. I like sports cars, motor racing, tennis and golf. Still work in my legal practice.

WHAT DO YOU COLLECT: singers, nuts, bolts and tools mainly for Singers, spare parts (who never know when you may want something!)

FAVOURITE FOOD: A great steak, cooked to perfection (m/r).

IDEAL HOLIDAY SPOT: Anywhere away from home.

TOP THREE GUESTS YOU WOULD INVITE FOR DINNER: Peter Janssen, bon vivant and racing driver; Jamie Oliver, good cook and talker; Diana Krall, exceptional jazz singer and pianist.

FAVOURITE MUSIC: Jazz and popular music.

FAVOURITE AUTHOR: No-one in particular – don’t read many novels.

CLAIM TO FAME: Winning 440 yards in the Combined Schools Athletics, 1959.

CLAIM TO SHAME: Not taking my car out of reverse and trying to tow my boat out of the river and having to brake each time I accelerated! Kept going further into the river before I realised I was in reverse. I felt soooo foolish.

QUOTE TO LIVE BY: Keep your mouth shut unless you know what you are talking about.

FAVOURITE CAR: Jaguar 3.8 Mk II.

CAR MOST HATED: Holden Camira.

NAME: Susie Margitich.BORN: 30 May 1946. 2 Seawall, Glenelg

(now South Esplanade).BRIEF HISTORY: Happy childhood. Father

died as I turned 12. Teenage years difficult but I had great friends and family. I couldn’t wait to work and travel, which I did.

WHAT DO YOU COLLECT: Handbags, shoes and hats. Books are also difficult to resist.

FAVOURITE FOOD: SA crayfish (lobster), preferably from the South-East.

IDEAL HOLIDAY SPOT: Cornwall touched me and I will return there, God willing. Sydney has a great pulse and vibe.

FAVOURITE MUSIC: Classics from Back to Shostokovich, Latin American and Ecclesiastical.

FAVOURITE AUTHORS: (F) Charlotte Bronte; (M) David Lodge.

CLAIM TO FAME: Going back to school and then Uni as a mature student with all the pressures of family, work, etc., and achieving my BA with distinction.

CLAIM TO SHAME: I fall asleep when Ivan is driving. Side windows are a must to stop me falling out of the Singers!

QUOTE TO LIVE BY: Give life your very best shot. Plus Ultra.

FAVOURITE CAR: Jaguar XK150 soft top.CAR MOST HATED: Vanguard.ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE:

The Singer Car Club is the best little car club in town. I’ve been involved with three clubs and the SCC is tops!

• My neighbour knocked on my door at 2.30 this morning. Can you believe that? 2.30 am!! Luckily for him I was still up playing my bagpipes!

• I was at an ATM yesterday when a little old lady asked if I could check her balance – so I pusher her over!
