THE STORY BEHIND
WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA The tradition of laying wreaths to honor our Veterans during the holiday season began in 1992, when Morrill Worcester of Worcester Wreath Company (Harrington,
Maine) was stuck with a number of extra wreaths at the close of the holiday season. Remembering a boyhood trip to the Nation’s Capital, and the sacred grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, he donated 5,000 wreaths to be placed at the
headstones of an older section of the cemetery.
What began as one man’s gesture, has now grown into a national movement - when in 2007 Wreaths Across America was formed as a non-profit. Today, more than
2,000 locations participate on a Saturday in December in laying the wreaths out of remembrance and respect for our nation's brave servicemen and women. In truth, a person dies twice... Once when we take our final breath and later, the last time their
name is spoken. With this mindset, Sioux Center Wreaths Across America began in 2015 in which 322 wreaths were sponsored and laid in Sioux Center and Carmel - each wreath laid in Sioux Center and Carmel is donated by individuals,
organizations, and businesses. Since then, we’ve grown and covered each year.
“It’s more than simply decorating graves,” said Sioux Center Wreaths Across America Director Aaron Van Beek. “It’s a silent message to all Veterans, their families, and
those currently serving that we will REMEMBER their service, we will HONOR their lives, and we will TEACH future generations the importance of citizenship and how our freedoms have been preserved over time.” This Christmas we will place over 400.
In our day in age where it seems like the values of freedom are becoming less and less, we challenge you all to take the time today to say the name of Veteran and thank them for the opportunity to live in the Land of the Free. Join us next year with a sponsorship or volunteer on Saturday, December 18, 2021 at 11:00 AM for the 2021
National Wreaths Across America Day here in Sioux Center. Thank you for your attendance today, safe travels wherever you go, and may God continue to bless you, our Veterans, and the United States of America.
We’d love to see your photos of today’s event. When you have a chance, be sure to
tag us in your photos on Instagram, check in with us on Facebook, and use the hashtag #WAA2020 to connect with the thousands of other volunteers nationwide.
REMEMBRANCE TREE PROGRAM The Veterans Remembrance Tree Program was established as another way to remember and honor our
veterans. As Gold Star families visited the land where the balsam tips are harvested each year for the
wreaths that are placed on veteran’s graves, they found a sense of peace and tranquility form the land.
WAA established a program to give them a living memorial to their lost
loved ones.
“We created the Veteran Remembrance Tree Program because we wanted to find a way to recognize the fallen soldiers and their families in a more permanent way,” explains Karen Worcester, Executive Director of Wreaths Across America. “This
endless forest is a truly visual representation of our unwavering commitment to our mission to Remember, Honor and Teach and to recognize our fallen soldiers and families this year and for many years to come.”
Sioux Center Wreaths Across America has placed a tag on 15 trees out in Columbia Falls, Maine to ensure that our fallen heroes that we honor every Memorial Day and
National Wreaths Across America have a living legacy that will be used to ensure that no veteran is ever forgotten. These Remembrance Trees are kept in production and
are tipped every three years; those balsam tips are then used to make the veteran’s
wreaths that are placed each December.
