“Summertime is back in town – time to get your scooter out,” sing The Busters, and Summertime of 2015 was certainly great fun. “You take it for a ride” was something we took literally during our joy ride to Lake Ammersee on one hot summer’s day, that saw temperatures almost hit-ting 40° and 200 heat-resistant scooterists, who succeeded in emptying the fridge at Armins gas station in a matter of minutes (bit.ly/joyride15-en).

Talking of hot, this year also saw our annual Vespa Road Trip take place, which took us to the Mediterranean island of Corsica. More than 2,000 km of scooter-riding enthusiasm with like-minded friends – and for all of us here, that sa-tisfying feeling of once again remembering what

And another bit of news from our headquarters: in early 2016 we are starting a new chapter at SIP: we are moving our entire business to a new location which is about 1km away from our current home. We’re taking this step because we need more space – and much more space at that – and we’re hugely looking forward to it. More on that in the next issue.

It almost seems like the guys from SIP have a direct line to the responsible weather gods. Even one day before the scheduled annual SIP Open Day 2015, various weather Apps pretty much agreed on a chance of rain of 40 – 60%. However, SIP Scootershop decided to take their chance and went ahead with their event. This courage paid off with lots of visitors show-ing up. An estimated 400 scooterists enjoyed the funky sounds spinning on DJ Leo’s (Atomic Café, Munich) turntables, the delicacies from Sigi Kuhn’s barbeque, draft beer, the crisp stone

oven pizza courtesy of Salvatore, the freshly ground Espresso by Bohne 37 and … a beautiful spring sun which every now and then fought its way through the clouds, smiling alike over visitors, sceptics and fair weather pilots...

And they came from all around Europe, France, Italy, Sweden, Austria. However, our hats go off to two members from the Vespa Club Moscow. Obviously, watching pictures and reports online was not enough for them, so they took a plane and visited SIP in person. Konstantin and Mikhail!

Frank Henkel from Munich lent a special Vintage air to the event with his incredible collector’s mo-dels, amongst them a rare Vespa V1 from 1948, a Hoffmann Königin as well as other treasures that found their admirers.

The high and dry event peaked in the traditional Vespa parade through the historical old town of Landsberg. After a sparkling farewell Spritz sponsored by local Italian cusiniers“ Trattoria Ita-liana“ right next to the local landmark Bavarian tower, the participants spread homewards into all geographic directions.

Were you aware that without a small percentage of common or garden soot, in the make-up of the black tyres that we have come to know and love, they would come out of the factory a dull shade of grey? This light shade is due to the fact that modern tyres almost exclusively consist of silica and this substance is white? Another fascinating feature, we were informed, is that tyres all possess a sooted-rubber strip incorporated into the tread to earth your scooter to the road and prevent any build-up of an electrical charge. Our new knowledge can be accredited to our local Michelin man, who came by our headquarters to bring us up-to-date on the latest news from the wonderful world of tyres, including the exact pronunciation of their companys name!

› Michelin now operate in sixty-nine production facilities in eighteen countries worldwide.

› Alongside their tyres they also produce a wide range of road-maps and restaurant/tourist guidebooks.

› The latest motorcycle and scooter tyres from Michelin possess the new ‘2 – CT’ technology, meaning the centre of the tread surface is

produced using a harder material than is used towards the flanks. This structure extends the available mileage while simultaneously providing the essential extra grip when leaning into a turn.

› This tread-mix makes it all the more important to carefully ‘ride-in’ your new tyres following mounting fitment. The heat created during the first few miles ensures completion of the pro-

cess of vulcanisation, establishing a fully-stable tread surface.

› The minimum legal tyre tread depth is 1.6mm, over at least two thirds of the tread surface.

› Ideally, tyres remain ‘factory-new’ for the first three years following production and are also fully serviceable between five and seven years of safe storage. The age of the tyre can be found, along with other information, amongst the flank lettering, e.g. – 2315 means that the tyre was produced in the twenty-third week of 2015.

Isn‘t the high summer beautiful? We current-ly find ourselves in a period of low pressure somewhere over the Atlantic and an area of high pressure over the whole of central Europe which is continuously feeding warm Sahara air over to us in Bavaria a little like a giant rotor blade. Let‘s hope it stays this way for months. Now that summer has finally arrived, those who were complaining about the non-stop rain just two weeks ago and wanted to up sticks for somewhere warmer are now moaning about the excessive heat. I, however, am of the opini-on that this kind of weather should simply be enjoyed to the absolute max. I happen to love the shimmering air, splashing around in the open air swimming pool or lake, the evening barbecues, the sweaty T-shirts and even the motorway road rage! And those who took part in this year‘s Joyride agree with me. Dressed for the hot weather, a colourful group gathered outside the headquarters of SIP in Landsberg (it‘s actually the last time we will be meeting here), and headed for the shade offered by our somewhat neglected-looking maple trees. An apparently never-ending line of old motor scooters and Vespas eventually made its way through Landsberg old town before coming to a stop in front of the local police station

thanks to all of the Saturday traffic. One of the police officers on duty, no doubt in a good mood because of the aforementioned wea-ther conditions, took a look through the window before surveying the situation with a big smile and waving the 2-cylinder flash mob on its way. The two-wheel army which had come together as if out of nowhere then sped along through the searing heat of the alpine uplands of Bavaria to its first stop: Armin‘s superb gas station. The contents of the ice cream cabinet and fridge were quickly emptied, and it was time to find somewhere shady for a while. Armin doesn‘t really care for the local plant life, but he has some nice old sun shades. Where does he get all of his great old stuff from? At this point a brief note is due: at both stops, some of those on the rally begin to get a little restless after a quarter of an hour or so, and start asking questions like „when are we setting off again?“ Yet the hosts at our stopovers often put a lot of work into preparing for our visits, sometimes days in advance, have to make an

early start, and really look forward to seeing us. In recognition of all this hard work alone, I think most would agree that it is rude not to stay for less than three quarters of an hour, otherwise it looks like we are selling our hosts a little short. In need of the positive effects of the cooling driving wind on such a hot day, we set off towards Herrsching via the town of Inning am Ammersee, stopping off at K68, Klaus‘s place, for a great cup of coffee. Klaus and his team are due a round of applause here: they manage to resist the Zimmer frames in the quiet retirement town of Herrsching, where he offers relaxed gastronomy in superb quality with any amount

of love and dedication, a little like a French village resisting the Roman army! Along with his K68, Klaus heads down to the lakeside on Sun-days with his mobile coffee shop. Klaus fed the hungry mouths with food from two barbecues, and his superbly stocked ice cream cabinet ensu-red those who had missed out at Armin‘s place didn‘t miss out a second time. This stopover was followed by a scenic ride around the lake via Wartaweil and Dießen to Utting and the restau-rant Pinello, a simple Italian place where tourists, locals and even film stars all hang out together. This Saturday evening, however, it was mostly Scooterists who were hanging out - and that

includes Robert Pinello himself. Many thanks to all of the 219 participants we counted in Grei-fenberg, everything went well without any major glitches, and thanks again to those who hosted us at our stopovers, without which the Joyride would have been more of a grinding, non-stop journey! We had a party once again!

This race has been, for quite a few years

now, organised by the people in Stoffis

team. The course in Rechnitz has been

repeatedly rebuilt in recent times, resulting

in a very curvy track with less high -speed

straights to go mad on - just the thing for

scooter racing! The field consisted of all

riders from the current Austrian ASCC cham-

pionship series.

The training session on Friday gave all present

a taste of the peculiarities of this course, with

some scooters race-paintwork already showing

signs of track surface contact, which was luckily

not the case with the racers themselves. Rain

was forecast for Saturday but the free training

laps remained dry and apart from a hitch with

the timing technology everything went as

planned. Unfortunately this was not the case for

Benjamin Neuberger as he had a spill on one of

the faster parts of the course, breaking his heel

in the process, we all wish him a rapid recovery-

get well soon! Following a slight delay the races

started around noon on Saturday, amazingly still

blessed with dry weather, allowing the sizable

crowd to be witness to some truly spectacular

race sequences. Class two saw the Parmakit,

Undi‘s and Stoffis Garage teams dominated the

podium positions, with excellent lap times all

round, despite of a slippery circuit. Both heats

were eventually won by the Parmakit team with

their fastest rider, Paolo, managing to set a new

track record of only 55.8 seconds! Christian

Rapf, from Undi‘s Racing Team, made second

twice with Stoffi‘s Teams Markus Angleitner fol-

lowing them through the chequered flag. These

three were consistently lapping at under 57

seconds during almost all of the second heat. In

class 5 Michi Pesendorfer messed up his start so

badly he was repositioned by the race stewards

at the rear of the starting field. In spite of this

drastic measure he managed to fight his way

through most of the pack to a proud fifth pla-

cing in the first heat. Stoffi himself faced strong

competition from some of the faster riders but

still earned second place - his best placing so far

this season! His second heat had him leading

from the off, only to be rudely interrupted by

a mechanical gremlin that saw his scooter only

producing full power at over 10,000 rpm. ..

exhaust we push the performance limits a

huge step forward. The SIP Road XL is a wolf

to the original exhaust and is therefore visually

very inconspicuous. The volume, however, is

Surf & style: it isn‘t only the annual Eu-ropean Championship at Munich Airport in „Stationary Wave Riding“ that can be brought into connection with surf & style: surfing is something that also goes well with our treasured Vespas – as long as you know what you‘re doing.

Munich is traditionally a city where STYLE is considered important. The „Beer and Wurst“ metropolis is a city with a very strong tradition for all things in Italian – it is sometimes descri-bed as Italy‘s most northern city – and it has, of course, always been one of the top Vespa cities. It is always surprising to see how many old Vespas there are on the roads in the summer, so much so that it is impossible to imagine Munich without them. It may well be the case that there is no other city that can boast so many classic Vespas.

Another classic style highlight in the capital of Bavaria is surfing on the Eisbach river – which is now a 30 year tradition. Both the Eisbach and the surfers are magnets for tourists, and sometimes we surfers feel like stars when the visitors from Japan and the USA come and take photos and film us day in, day out in as we ride the waves in the English Garden. And what was

officially banned for many years has recently become tolerated – at least for experienced surfers, and at their own risk. It is worth high-lighting the words‚ experienced surfers‘ here, because surfing in the Eisbach is very dangerous with a high risk of injury for those who don‘t know what they‘re doing – which means it certainly isn’t something for beginners.

It may sound unusual but it‘s true – they don‘t just hand out tickets to riders who break the law, they hand them out to surfers as well. It is still the case that when the tides of the river Isar rise high it has waves that you can surf – but if one of our police officer friends catches you, then you will be served with a ticket and asked to pay a fine. And when it comes to the Vespa, we all know that many scooterists occasionally break the law. Ultimately, it is an inevitable part of the fun and the thrills.

So, in Munich two things have come together: surf & ride as an urban lifestyle. This kinda makes the classic Vespa into the two-wheel VW camper van of scooters.

Two old friends who are surf-, skate- and Vespa buddies have now been combining their

two passions of Vespa riding and surfing for many years: Nico Meisner (43, owner of Buster Surfboards) and Andy Bode (41, one of the owners of the Gronsdorf Vespa Garage). Around the time when Buster Surfboards was founded in 2002, both friends decided they wanted to drive a scooter, and for style reasons, it had to be a classic Vespa made from sheet metal. They therefore found their way to the old location of the SIP Scootershop to get an initial impression of the scooter market and the scooter scene. A little while later two Vespas were ready to go. Buster became one of the biggest manufactu-rers of surfboards in Germany, and in a short time, also acquired a garage. Developments saw prototype surfboards being shaped in the Vespa workshop and Vespas being repaired in the surf-board store. DIY surfboard brackets for Vespas were designed at the same time.

Anyone who wants to cut a dash can‘t go far wrong with a classic Vespa and a surfboard. But remember: you should know what you‘re doing with both!

opinion he succeeded! Biograd itself, with it’s long promenade, restaurants in every size and flavour, countless bars and also numerous pubs seems the perfect place for this kind of event. This was also proved by the Harley Davidson owners meet being held here last year.

Regrettably we were not in a position to report upon the extensive ride-outs that took place, including excursions to the famous Krka water-falls and the comprehensive Vespa exhibition in Zadar, as we dutifully manned our very own SIP presentation stand to answer all questions and enquiries-providing assistance when possible. Later we heard that everybody who could take

VESPA WORLD DAYS 2015 BIOGRAD�CROATIA The picturesque Adriatic coastal resort town of Biograd in Croatia was this years location for the annual Vespa World Days (Eurovespa) event, taking place from the 11th to the 14th of June. Over 5000 Vespisti, from all over the globe, celebrated their love of the iconic Vespa scooter in one of the most beautiful regions surrounding the Mediterranean - on two small wheels!

The official Vespa World Days magazine publi-cation, handed out to all participants as part of the welcome package, saw the organiser (Rafael Culjak) state his aim as seeing a contented smile on the face of every single guest. In our collective

part on the tours thoroughly enjoyed themselves, with no exceptions! Our stand was also attended by the Vespa stunt and wheelie king Guenter ’Lumpi’ Schachermayr strutting his funky stuff in front of an appreciative audience, accompanied by much cheering and applause. Those attending the rally included Scooterists from Mexico, Brazil, Thailand, Taiwan, Russia.....a truly international spectrum of Vespa fans from all continents and nations.

The highlight of this years VWD was the presen-tation of the ‘Vespa Trophy’, the competition being open to all Vespa clubs registered to attend the event. Over 2000 Vespa dealerships from 25 countries took part, acting as control points with the club who could visit the most of these en-route being declared the victors. This year the contest was won by the Italian Vespa club of Sirmione having collected the most authentica-ted visits along the way by the 11th of June. At the present, alongside the international Vespa World Club there are a total of 56 national clubs and 780 local organisations with over 67000 individual members. The first international Vespa meeting, or EuroVespa, took place as far back as 1958 as part of the ’EXPO’ world exhibition in the Belgian city of Brussels! Since 2007 all officially supported international Vespa meetings have been renamed as Vespa World Days events.

The Vespa scooter, itself a timeless legend, can be considered as THE classic scooter and offers a unique form of unsurpassed mobility and style. This icon of the 20th century has been success-fully designed, developed and produced in the PIAGGIO factory at Pontedera in the Toscana region of Italy since 1946. From the sporty Vespa Sprint and Primavera models of yesteryear through to the present day classically styled GTS range with ABS and traction control : The Vespa concept represents solid reliability combined with a unique lifestyle, attitude and riding experience!

These shock absorbers are available with two separate grades of stiffness :

60 PSI: for comfortable riding or race track useage 100 PSI: for XXL guys or lots of luggage

The stiffer the damper the higher the PSI rating (the quicker the rebound). Another important factor is the choice of spring. We recommend springs with at least a 33% increase in stiffness or STO springs.

Almost all shock absorbers currently available for Vespa models with a separate spring and damper suspension have no effective damping function, mostly due to their technical layout. Even shock absorbers with adjustable com-pression damping provide a noticeably stiffer suspension, although the expanding spring is not damped or slowed. This leads to the shock absorber expanding quickly, sending a jolt through the handlebars.

One of the main aims in designing the SIP performance shock absorber was to provide optimal damping during the rebound phase. The rebound damping ensures a clean and even shock absorber expansion at a controllable rate. This causes, for example during braking, the front end of the scooter to recover softly and remain controllable without acting like a pogo stick! The damping process takes place in two seperate chambers, one filled with gas, the other with oil. Shock bushes are made out of polyurethane rubber.

A U G S B U R GSEASON OPENING 2015The weekend preceding mayday has establis-hed itself as the date for the first scooter ride out of the year for all Bavarian scooterists. And this year the date fell on the 25th of April. The morning saw our small but exquisite group of thirteen scooterists gather to make our way to-gether over winding country roads to the nearby town of Augsburg. We swiftly arrived, making our way past the legendary ‚RollerKö‘ scooter meeting place, towards the arranged rendez-vous point at the ‚Exezierplatz‘ market square and the ‚Bombig‘ Bar. The first impression was a feast for the eyes : A panorama picture of hundreds of scooters dominating the square and scooterists in between enjoying the atmosphere. While some used the time to refuel and carry out final checks to their machines, others were eating, drinking and talking scooters in antici-pation of the start of the ride out. The time duly came and a huge cloud of two-stroke exhaust smoke was left behind by the departing mass of scooters, all off towards the nearby town of Mickhausen. Our perfectly chosen destination was the ‚Cistercian’ monastery with its prime example of a 100% Bavarian beer-garden! A grand total of over 250 scooters were present this year, with no accidents or breakdowns for the back-up van to take care of. The exception was provided by a lady rider who required a tow shortly before the final stop at ‚Enzos‘ ice-cream parlour.

Once again many thanks and appreciations are due to the organisers of this annual event. We also wish all scooterists an en-joyable accident and breakdown-free 2015 season! We‘ll see you all hopefully on the runs!

VISIT TO MOSTRA SCAMBIOAt the end of March 2015, we were at Italy’s largest parts market for you in Reggio (Emilia). This kind of parts market is not just the perfect address for anyone looking for specific motor scooter spare parts, accessories or an entire Vespa but it also offers Italian flair and a who-le lot of fun and thrills. These parts markets are called “Mostra Scambio” in Italy and they are scheduled from March to November in all the country’s regions. We always recommend going to these kinds of markets with really clear expectations and ideas. Otherwise you quickly get caught up in the atmosphere and randomly buy all sorts of things only to get home and then think about whether you even need what you bought. Although, what do you really need anyway? Despite this it will not do any harm to have a plan and it is usually your transporting capa-city that is the limiting factor. Haggling is of course all part of the deal as the Italian dealer would be insulted if you simply handed them the requested amount. The purchase often only becomes binding over a glass of red wine together and it is not uncommon to end up

at the dealer’s home after the market to look at their treasures that were not for public viewing at the market.

Professionals arrive on Thursday and try to pick up a few bargains before they are even pushed onto the venue’s site. Saturday is of course the most packed but we were also there on Saturday and found rich pickings. Admission usually costs roughly €10 and “cash is king” on practically all stands when it comes to making a purchase.

VISIT TO MOSTRA SCAMBIO

The second round of the EST this year was arranged for the final weekend of May at the Zielona Góra circuit in Poland. This fixture is already considered by many of the participants as an unmissable highlight of the season, in spite (or maybe because) of its remoteness. The speed-orientated track layout, including banked curves, enables average EST race speeds of over 75kmh! The international pedigree of the circuit was reflected in the numerous nationalities represented on the starting grid : Ukrainians, Swiss, Polish, Czechs, all proving that this is not a race too far! This principle was certainly proved by the German rider returning, especially in time for this meet, from construction work in Australia! The first competitors arrived on Thursday and were able to exploit the superb weather for track testing their machines in preparation for the races. Saturday saw the start to the official race proceedings and the first qua-lifying rounds already proved that we were in for an exciting weekend of racing with the promise of many closely fought duels between the rival racers. The lap-times for the riders in the 70cc class were unbelievably close, with the leaders of the first two runs being separated by just one hundredth of a second!

Sunday came and the two leading riders from the day before both crashed following the start of the first race, establishing the eventual win-ner fairly quickly. In the second run Marc Harder (class 2) and Andreas Lukas (class 3) pulled away from their respective packs quickly and both dominated till the chequered flag – Congra-

tulations guys! At the end of the meeting a mini – tornado provide for discussion appearing during an otherwise fine late – spring weather situation. It wound its way through the pits, assisting the more relaxed teams to move their kit and clean-up simultaneously! The SIP pavilion was not spared, but we all lived to tell the tale!

At the end of 2014, we supported Dr. Gatz of Landsberg with his hospi-tal project in Cameroon for the first time. And we helped him with what we are good at doing: logis-tics. We packed up a set of unwanted hospital beds, clinical fittings, appara-tus and much more in a seagoing container, paid the duty on it and shipped it to Cameroon.

Total costs € 8,000. His project convinces thanks to its self-initiative, high level of personal com-mitment, hard work, and above all else, its im-mediate impact on people in need without the risk of the money falling into the wrong hands. He is probably the best person to describe his hospital project in Cameroon:

„Dear Ralf, dear SIP Scootershop team, Our first project together was the big seagoing container which we loaded up and organised together with you: it contained 40 used hospital beds, a whole load of bed linen and medical technology equipment. The second project was an urgently needed ultrasound device which we were only able to add thanks to your generous

help. Supported with a serviceable projector, we are now training our colleagues from Cameroon who either attend our workshops which take place once a week or who we visit for training purposes in the scope of further education cour-ses that are held in hospitals which are further away. The quality and above all else the tropical suitability of the new US device is first rate and we have been able to work with it exceptionally well. It has been used to identify clinical pictures which have been wrongly diagnosed for many years such as a case of ureteral stones which caused colics for several months and led to complete kidney failure because it was wrongly diagnosed as intestinal colic, but was imme-diately recognisable with the new ultrasound

equipment, enabling the patients to be given the correct treatment. Inconceivable: renal colic over several months, frequently with younger patients, which massively reduce quality of life as well as life expectancy and which are recognisable beyond doubt within a minute using ultrasound diagnosis. I have to say that this donation resul-ted in a good investment.

WHAT WE ARE NOW WORKING TOWARDS :We have to buy a modern anaesthesia device very soon. We have turned two old devices into one that works – but which leaves a certain amount to be desired. Some anaesthetists complain about the lack of parameters which are required for the completion of a risk-free anaesthetic. Total cost approx. ten thousand euros, in the context of which there are a sufficient number of usable devices on offer on the second-hand market. This is what we are currently saving up for. We also have a social fund, which is a fund we have set up for patients who can‘t afford to have life-sustaining treatment or an operation as they – or their family – don‘t have the money. From this fund we are able to provide a subsidy of up to € 70 per patient, which enables us to pay for most operations.“

I knew immediately that it was going to be a big trip again, when my passenger buckled his 15kg baggage into the foot well at the crack of dawn, and puttered along with me, relatively relaxed, to the SIP Scooter shop in Landsberg am Lech

A total of 17 Vespa scooters of all shapes and sizes met there. From PX to VBB, Rally, SS, SS180, Sprint and even two GTS 300, we set off from there together in the direction of Corsica. First stage destination Bergamo. The weather was excellent and I enjoyed cruising with my siblings over the well developed country and pass roads. We rode up onto the Hahntennjoch at 1895m altitude, and one of my companions was given a new stator plate, with an amazing backdrop. Then it was on to Reschenpass, past Lake Reschen and its sunken

church tower to Latsch, where SIP customer Egon Vent welcomed us on his Struzzo, and led us to his favourite pasta location. We waited patiently for our riders in a shady car park.

Then the air became thin, because we went bend by bend up Stelvio Pass at 2757m. The view and atmosphere were “breathtaking” for me in the most literal sense of the word. We reached Bergamo late, and were parked on a terrace in the middle of the old town, with a view of the discreetly lit little town, to sleep. The next morning we visited our supplier DMD Helmet, and our riders rummaged through the well stocked shop, before it was on to the hot and turbulent Autostrada to Milan. The sun shone from above at what felt like 200°C, and the hot asphalt simmered below. I felt like we were continually blazing towards a wide

open oven, and envied my siblings with newer models their water cooling.

“Drop it like it’s hot” - My pilot lost his iPhone at full speed, which slid across the road sur-face, and went directly under the crash barrier and landed in the field. Of course I could have caught it with my footboard, but that would have been too easy. So he had to go to the Milan Deus Shop and the KD House, a mega burger bar, with a cracked screen. Genoa was waiting for us, and after the obligatory cannon-ball by our riders, we were lashed under the deck of the ferry to Bastia like little calves, and sailed to the French Mediterranean island over-night. The next morning, we were welcomed directly at the ferry port by some members of the Scooter Club du Sud Est, and meandered along the winding roads together, down the

beautiful west coast to arrive at the destination near Ajaccio around evening.

Two relatively relaxed days followed. Worn clutch linings were preventatively replaced, disc brakes vented and for the exhausted but happy riders, there were numerous cool downs on the nearby sandy beach. The hospitality and festive mood of the French was confirmed as usual. It seemed to me as if there was wine from their own vineyard, the world’s best Bouillabaisse, grilled fish that was personally selected from the fish market, and always happy songs alternating between the style of the French and Bavarian beer tents.

But all good things must come to an end. We were loaded up, said goodbye to our hosts and got back on the road towards the ferry port in Bastia. The eternal meandering of the tight, poorly built roads must have seriously afflicted my helms-man, because on one of the bends, a vehic-le stopping abruptly became a disaster for us. My original chassis is simply not made for bumpy roads and rapid

braking manoeuvres, and ultimately brought us down. My mud guard received a large dent, and the left side panel was scratched. My rider lost a piece of his tooth, suffered various grazes on his arms and legs, but got back on my seat again after a short hospital stay in Calvi. Even though the temperatures are hot, and you would prefer to drive through the neighbourhood on us naked, it is recommended to think about approp-riate protective clothing here and there.

The next morning, the travelling speed was predictably slightly reduced, and after a short ferry ride to Livorno, we were driven to Massa, and met the members of the local and best organised Vespa club there. Once again there was revelry, and the songs sounded again. Grazie el Presidente, siete famosi!

The next day, after a short but eventful interim stop in Maranello and the Ferrari Museum located there, our

route led to the Trattoria la Val at Garda, the hideout for the night. Our companion Zini from Stoffis Garage celebrated the arrival his birthday there, and once again the clearly

successful evening was highlighted with praise songs for the jubilarian. The route home along Lake Garda and over the Brenner pass was uneventful, and of course, just before Sterzing came the rain and significantly lower tempera-tures. Unfortunately my clutch shaft seal gave up the ghost, and after a short diagnosis, the ADAC plus transportation was ordered. It was somewhat degrading for me and my man, not to be able to pass the town sign of Landsberg am Lech with the other companions, yet as consolation, we were chauffeured home dry and well-tempered in a Ducato.

I am a Vespa Sprint Veloce, 42 years old and therefore 5 years older than my pilot. My heart is made of a PX 200, and lifted with a 210ccm MALOSSI cylinder called “SPORT”, a long stroke shaft, Venturi suction head and an SIP Road exhaust. I am visually damaged and I need open heart surgery, but I am not tired. My owner will patch me up, and I am already looking forward to speeding through European country roads, motorways and pass roads with him again.

VESPA CUSTOMINCH TERROR

The amount of work that went into this pheno-menal Vespa custom project is obvious! One of our long-term customers, Marek Nachlik, has delivered a milestone in Vespa customising fit for the hall of fame! Here is an account of the production process by the man himself:

„The idea for the project was sparked off by yet another tuned PX motor going arse over tit and blowing up underneath me costing me – once again – a whole barrel full of money. By chance I noticed that the hub on the Honda Comstar wheel possesses a similar mounting hole arran-gement to that found on the OE Piaggio items for the PX scooters. With an attitude of ‚suck it and see‘ I bought myself an example of the Honda wheel on E-bay and discovered to my joy and surprise that, with a minimal offset, it is indeed compatible with the Vespa wheel moun-ting. I drilled out the Honda mounting holes

and attached a centralisation device to the hub. This solved the problem of where to mount the rear wheel sprocket and shock absorber. Due to the fact that the drum brake originated from a Honda 750cc motorbike it is definitely suitably powerful enough for the needs of this project.

When I first thought about which motor to use the initial parameter considered was the fact that I wanted something with more than 250cc. This quickly lead to the WR 360 motor from Husqvarna coming into consideration as it is relatively easy to get hold of and the spare parts are easily available and affordable. One minor set-back of the Husky motor is that has its output sprocket located on the right hand side, the Honda wheel sprocket however is on the left. Luckily the simplex drum brake assembly can be simply turned over, leaving the sprocket on the correct side.

The next part of the process involved fabricating a swing-arm, preferably made of steel for easier modification. At this stage I still hadn‘t really begun to take the whole thing seriously or even hope that I would ever have it anywhere near complete. In the end I decided upon a swing-arm from a Yamaha XS 400 to modify for my purposes. The bracket to hold the motor in place was then also fabricated from steel plate. To check the overall proportions I mounted this part of the assembly into a Vespa frame, from which I had already removed the rear half. The main plan had evolved to having a centrally po-sitioned motor with a completely removable rear frame unit, including the sidepanels. These fac-tors determined the final situation of the Husky motor and also the final maximum length of the swing-arm. I shortened it to a suitable length and welded it to the motors holding bracket. I had decided to construct the rear shock absorber mechanism underneath the scooter, similar to the assembly found on Buell motorcycles. This solution was necessary due to the removable rear frame being no longer suitable to incorporate a shock absorber mounting. The sus-pension leverage system was designed to create identical strength and travel at each

end of the mechanism. The lever was then attached to the bottom of the frames tunnel which I also reinforced through to the legshields using 2.5mm thick angled steel plate. The swing-arm fixing bolt with a modified thread from the Vespa Cosa was used here and to further strengthen the tunnel section I added a steel cover, which also helped to hide the existing reinforcements.

BERLINAfter the Vespa & Lambretta season kick-off in nearby Augsburg 1st of may is the traditional date for the start of the scooter season in the german capital Berlin. More than 400 scooterists met at perfect spring conditions at the Winterfeldplatz. Tour is the same as every year, out of Berlin to the Wannsee lake and a great gathering at a Beergar-den beautifully located at the Grunewald tower. After a beer or two the group headed to the Siegessäule and finished the event with numerous circles around the place.

Again a great event without an actual organizer in an impressive city with truly hospital fellow scoo-terists and a sympathetic scooter scene. We wish everybody a great and safe scooter season 2015!

Remove some air from the rear wheel, 1 bar is ideal for doing wheelies! Basic positioning: drive at walking speed, pull the clutch lever, put your foot on the rear wheel brake! Make sure your weight is in the centre, now accelerate. Engage the clutch sensitively, and don‘t let go of the accelerator. On engaging the clutch slide back on the seat until your arms are stretched out. You only do wheelies with the accelerator and the brake. Don‘t mess around on with the handlebars, you could look a fool. The scooter should now be standing on the rear wheel. IMPORTANT: even if you lose your balance to the right or the left, NEVER take your foot off the rear wheel brake! When the scooter reaches its upper tipping point step lightly the brake so that you don‘t fall backwards. If you fail to use the rear wheel brake you could go over backwards if you accelerate too hard. The results would not look good. If you brake too hard, accelerate a little more so that the scooter stays up. It‘s the only way to get points for style. Chill out and wave to the girls (best idea is with your left hand so that you can still accelerate!)

In 2006, the Road Traffic Act was amended with this passage: “The equipment of motor vehicles must be adapted to the weather conditions. This includes in particular suitable tyres.” According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, this regulation also applies to motorbikes and motor scooters.

Since 29 November 2010, new laws for putting on snow tyres have applied in Germany. The amendment to the Road Traffic Act supplants a provision that caused a lot of legal uncer-tainty. The critical problem of

the previous regulation was that it did not make it clear what weather conditions required winter tyres and what characteristics the tyres must have to be deemed suitable in each case. The new regulation – “in the case of packed snow, slush, slippery frost or black ice, a vehicle may only be driven if fitted with tyres whose tread profile, tread compound or structure are designed for said wintery road conditions (winter tyres)” – is a rule of conduct that obliges all motorized road users on German roads to drive with winter tyres under the named weather conditions; so this applies equally to all motorbikes and motor scooters. This especially affects those who drive all year round,

like commuters. It is also good to know that the soft rubber mixture of winter tyres offer appreci-ably more grip and thus greater safety already as temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius.

Since the amendment, tyre manufacturers such as MICHELIN (City Grip), CONTINENTAL (Conti Move 365), HEIDENAU (Snowtex) and IRC (Urban Snow) have been busy. In modern tyres, they have managed to raise the silica content compared to the carbon black component, similarly to the current winter tyres for cars. Advancements are being brought out regularly with new rubber mixtures, better blading technology, new carcass structures and new profile designs, and we can now present the current range of winter tyres for motor scooters here

1 CLEANING Flyspeck and dirt will attack paint and metal. It should be thoroughly removed before putting the scooter away for winter. Polish up chrome parts one more time. We have very well proven care products in our range.

2 CHARGE THE BATTERYDisconnect the battery and charge it. The easiest way is to use our HELLA Battery Charger – so the battery can stay in the vehicle and will be charged up as required. The charger turns itself on and off automatically!

3 COOLANTCheck the level of coolant and top up with antifreeze if necessary. It will be getting frosty from now on – especially outside, but even in the garage.

4 TYRE PRESSURESo as to prevent flat tyres from standing around, increase the tyre pressure by about 0.3 bar. You can do this precisely using our air pump.

5 FILL THE TANKMetal tanks should be filled to the brim with fuel in order to prevent corrosion.

6 STORAGETo take the load off the tyres, you should put the

vehicle up on its centre stand. Of course, you can

also put the scooter up on full supports, such as

our parking trolley! The ideal storage place is a dry

room (like a garage or basement). At any rate, we

recommend you keep the scooter nicely protected

with our scooter cover.

7 WINTER TYRESIf you also want to ride your scooter in winter,

you will need the appropriate winter tyres. The

range for motor scooters is very extensive.

8 NEVER BE FREEZING “There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad
