Year 6 Taster Day

W e have recently enjoyed our two Year 6 taster days and I have seen a

good number of our upcoming Year 7 pupils already mixing well and making new friends. It has been a pleasure to see so many excited and eager faces - all really looking forward to joining us at Sir Thomas Boughey High School come September.

However, we mustn’t forget that, for some, the move to secondary school can also be quite daunting. There are new subjects, teachers, routines, activities, expectations… the list goes on and on…

Well, I can guarantee that everyone here is ready to give our new Year 7 a thoroughly warm welcome and that we are determined to make sure that they all begin their time with us with a happy and positive start which can continue as they progress through the year groups.

Mr M Rigby, Head of Year 7

2

They will all be ready to take up the challenge and forge an exciting and successful future for themselves, just like those who have gone before them. We look forward to meeting and working with them all.

At this time of the year, as well as our bidding farewell to our Year 11pupils, we have to unfortunately say goodbye to some members of staff. Miss Burns leaves her post as an English TA to train as a Teacher of English, as does Mr Woodrow who also leaves us to commence teacher training. Mr Riddle moves on to St John Fisher HS as a Teacher of Computing. Mrs Brown, after many years inspiring and nurturing our excellent musicians, is moving to work more with primary school pupils and Mr Roberts, after 15 years in charge of the Technology Department, can look forward to his retirement. We thank them for their efforts and commitment to the school and wish them all the very best for the future.

All that remains is for me to thank all pupils (past, present and future) staff, parents and governors for their efforts and support this year and to wish everyone a pleasant and safe break.

A s we draw to the end of another academic year, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Year 8 on their achievements

over the last twelve months.

I am pleased to report that Year 8 have been working extremely hard in the run up to a well-deserved summer break and I hope they are proud of the progress they have made. Not only have they shown their abilities within the

classroom, they are also making a great contribution to the wider school community.

Our after school clubs are filled with enthusiastic, dedicated and determined Year 8 pupils. Our Year 8 Peer Mentors continue to make an invaluable contribution to our Primary School sessions and school events. Every tutor group has written, rehearsed and delivered a relevant and thoughtful whole school assembly.

Obviously, Year 8 is an extremely important year. The skills that are developed over Key Stage Three will be essential for a successful transition into their GCSE work, which will begin in just over one year. Time is of the essence and I wish the current Year 8 pupils the best of luck for the future.

Mr Kerr- Head of Year 8

The Sir Thomas Boughey Vertical Kilometre Challenge

A t the end of May, a group of staff took part in the formidable STB Vertical Kilometre Challenge, to raise money for Help For Heroes and Douglas Macmillan

Hospice. A gruelling 12km trek through all the wind and rain Mount Snowdon could throw at them, with a punishing elevation gain of 1km, made it a tough, but ultimately rewarding day.

The team consisted of Miss Bagguley, Ms Bibby, Miss Cleary, Mr Colclough, Miss Collings, Ms Deakin, Ms Dele-Fane, Mr Dove, Mrs Goodwin and Mr Oliver.

As we went to print, the team had raised nearly £900, and donations can be made until July 15th at www.justgiving.com/teams/stbh. You can find a link on our website alongside a picture gallery from the day. A big thank you to everyone who took part, and to those who gave money for these great causes.

Celebration of Music 2014

Our annual Celebration of Music this year was, again, a fantastic showcase of the musical talent we have here at STB.

The evening started with a resounding samba drumming performance, which grabbed the attention of the whole audience as they paraded through the hall. The drummers were led by Joe Wilson from the Madula drumming organisation.

We then had a packed evening of performances, including pupils from years 7-11 performing both solo and ensemble pieces, including a classical and a very recent popular repertoire. Some pupils took part in multiple performances and the staff choir also made their debut performance on the evening.

All pupils excelled themselves in the concert and it was fantastic to see a packed audience appreciate the efforts and talents of our STB musicians.

Community Litter Pick

On Friday 6th June, all of year 7 and their tutors took part in a litter pick around the school and the local area. The

event was organised by the Audley LAP group as part of a community day - with local primary schools also participating in litter picks.

Pupils showed great enthusiasm and really took the ‘keep Britain tidy’ motto to heart. The hunt for litter took some youngsters deep into the bushes and no stone was left unturned - leaving behind a clean, tidy and safe local environment for everyone in our community to enjoy. Please follow their example and continue to keep our community clean!

Summer Samba Celebration 2014

On Monday 12th May, STB hosted a community celebration for The local Audley LAP group with performances from Woodlane primary pupils and STB musicians. Madula delivered a series

of music workshops, during April and May, with the four Audley Parish schools and a group of the older residents, culminating in an intergenerational Community Celebration performance. As part of this project, Joe Wilson and Sarah Miller helped a group of Year 11 students from Sir Thomas Boughey High School to create a song which was recorded at Tremolo Studios and produced by Karl Waye.

‘These Chains’ was performed, for the first time, at an Audley LAP Community Celebration alongside a samba band performance which involved over 40 children, young people and older residents, with an age ranging from 4-84! The Celebration took place at Sir Thomas Boughey High School, with pupils from the school making lunch for the older residents prior to the performance.

4

Young People Write & Record Song to Raise Money for Charity

‘These Chains’, was launched as download-for-donation on Friday 13th June 2014, from Madula’s website www.madula.org.uk. The song was written and recorded by music students from Sir Thomas Boughey High School with Madula artists last month.

The young people chose four charities they wanted to support through the downloading of ‘These Chains’ – Audley and Kidsgrove Community First Responders, Campaign Against Great Oak Opencast, The Alzheimer’s Society & Stonewall.

Madula artist and director, Joe Wilson, said, “‘These Chains’ is absolutely brilliant and the fact that it was written and recorded in just three weeks is a testament to the incredible musicianship, talent and hard work of the young people involved. These students are a credit to themselves, their parents and the school’s music department!”

‘These Chains’ was performed for the first time at an Audley LAP Community Celebration on Monday 12th May, alongside a samba band performance which involved over 40 children, young people and older residents, with an age ranging from 4 - 84! The celebration took place at Sir Thomas Boughey High School, with pupils from the school making lunch for the older residents prior to the performance.

French Theatre Productions

‘Mon pere ne me comprends pas’

YYear 9, plus the GCSE French groups in Years 10 and 11 were treated to a fabulous performance delivered by the Onatti Theatre Company on May 8th.

The play lasted for an hour and captivated the audience despite the fact that it was entirely in French! The two actors were native French speakers and their ability to improvise was highly entertaining. The play ‘Mon pere ne me comprends pas’ was about a teenage girl who is fed up with her father treating her like she is still a little girl. So, when her father gives her a pink pencil case and a pink wand for her birthday, Helène’s patience runs out. Helène wants a new dad, a different dad, a cooler dad. But some people should be careful what they wish for! The ‘Dad’ character evolved into a series of other personalities- the favourite being a woman in a blonde wig and heels who amused us all by tickling Mr Ogborne and exclaiming him to be ‘tres beau’!

Daniel Taylor, from Year 11, and Courtney Bridgwood, from Year 9, bravely participated on stage and did an excellent job.

6

“The play helped me realise how much of the language I recognised which was quite fascinating I thought it was worthwhile and was quite entertaining, I was engaged throughout the whole performance” - Robyn Warren, Year 9

“The play was excellent as there was lots of comedy and laughter and also gestures to help the audience understand.”- David Benton, Year 7

“I think it was interesting and exciting to watch. It also helped and benefitted my French. I really enjoyed it; it was very fun to watch.” - Ashleigh Barnett, Year 7

‘Le Chateau’

OOn Tuesday 3rd June, years 6, 7 and 8 were invited to watch (and sometimes participate in!) a performance also by the Onatti Theatre Group.

Two very skilled actors worked the eager audience into a frenzy, with a very funny, francophone performance. The play, entitled ‘Le Chateau’, centred around an English servant of Henry VIII’s who was sent to France to find the king a wife. The only problem was that the English servant couldn’t speak much French! Many amusing scenes ensued with some excellent contributions from pupils.

Despite a good chunk of the performance being in French, pupils learnt that they could follow the storyline through gestures, repetition and the emotive tones of the actors’ voices - and that learning a language can result in a lot of fun!

“I think it was great and it had

two talented people in it I could understand them and I loved

how they included the audience This has made Languages seem

more interesting” - Lauren Ashley, Year 9

“It was interesting

and funny and I like how they interacted with the

audience Also I was surprised by how much I understood”

- Chelsey White, Year 9

“I thought the play

was very good and put together well because I liked

the fact that one actor spoke in French and one in English”

- Imogen Forster, Year 7

MFL Visit to Boulogne

Bonjour! During the half term break in May, Mr Rigby, Mrs Zobolas, Miss Locke, Mr Wood and Miss Burns

accompanied 41 pupils from Years 7, 8 and 10 on an adventure to the quaint town of Boulogne-sur-Mer on the northern coast of France. After a midnight departure and overnight travel by ferry and coach, the tired travellers arrived at 9am, fresh for a visit to the bustling and lively Boulogne market. Pupils spoke French and purchased all manner of produce from huge loaves of bread to delicious, fresh-roasted chicken! Following the market, the group travelled to a local snail farm where they learnt in detail about ‘the secret life of snails’ and then had the opportunity to not only hold some, but to eat some too! A snail with a hint of cheese and garlic… what could be tastier?

Later, the group visited a small chocolate factory where they were shown how to make a hollow chocolate bunny (not a snail!) and then were able to taste some of the delicacies themselves. On arrival at ‘Les Mont des

Couppes’ youth hostel, pupils were amazed by the old World War Two bunkers still in the grounds, before enjoying a typical French evening meal and playing football on the local beach.

Sunday saw even greater adventures. Hot chocolate in a bowl with bread for breakfast, a tour of Boulogne with detailed historical facts about how to escape through the castle walls through a secret hatch, and a delightful little sweetshop full of every sweet imaginable! Lunch consisted of a sandwich – a

baguette, of course – followed by an afternoon looking at sharks, penguins, sea lions and all manner of weird and wonderful creatures of the deep in one of the biggest aquariums they’ve ever seen!

After a final evening of beach and quiz fun, the group spent Monday morning visiting an authentic French bakery and eating a warm, freshly-made pain au chocolat, before heading home on the EuroTunnel. An exhausting but fun-filled and educational visit for all involved!

C’était merveilleux!7

“It was amazing! The best school trip ever! Loved the food and entertainment!”- David Benton

“It was a great experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it” - Nathan Cotterill

“It was a hilarious trip! Great food, entertainment! Everybody enjoyed it!” - Katy Turner

YYear 10 GCSE Catering students have recently completed their Controlled Assessment practical exam - making an Afternoon Tea.

It was a pleasure to watch students work methodically making four products in three hours, working through their plans, and presenting food in a professional way.

Well done to the whole class for your fantastic efforts.

Sharing a ‘Random Act of Kindness’

WWhat could be more generous than sharing the delicious smells of making chocolate brownies from the food classroom?

The Year 10 BTEC Jamie Oliver Home Cooking Skills class decided to further that, last Friday, by delivering a chocolate brownie to every member of staff at the school. They made the brownies, then bagged them up, made a personal handwritten label for each member of staff and then delivered this random act of kindness!

Well done to Macauley Duncalf, Kieran Dean, Liz Higginson, Billy Thorley and Liam Pearsall.8

The Good Food Show

Friday 13th June 2014 - a lovely warm and sunny day and an excellent day for a school trip to the BBC Good Food Show. 33 students accompanied by Miss Daragheh, Mr Taylor, Mrs Morgan and Mrs Beardmore arrived in Birmingham just before 10.30am.

We had over three hours to explore the hundreds of stalls and stands from different companies, taste lots of different foods and we had the opportunity to buy lots of foods.

We had tickets to the Super Theatre at 1.30pm and Paul Hollywood presented a 40 minute show; preparing and cooking Stilton and Walnut bread. He talked about the use of ingredients and the new series of the Great British Bake Off.

Some of the Year 9 girls met and posed for photos with Paul Hollywood!

We tasted lots of different foods including:

• Curry sauces and chutneys• Chilli cheese, strong cheddars and flavoured cheeses• Tasted Qucumber water, a new soft drink

stocked in supermarkets • Ginger ale, ginger beer and fruit cordials• Soya milk and soya products• Gluten free cakes and biscuits• Yakult milk drinks

Mr Taylor dared some of the group to taste a chilli sauce called ‘Pain’! Who would even try that? Mrs Morgan, Kieran Dean…….

The Home and Gardens Show was also exhibiting in the same conference centre and some of the Year 10s were curious about the RNIB stand. They met a blind man and some of the guide dogs. They were challenged to walk in a tunnel with a blindfold on to imagine being blind.

9

One Year 10 student said: ‘It made me realise how big the food industry is. There are so many companies, selling lots of different products. We tried loads of foods. The chefs were wandering about and we got to see them.’

Miss Daragheh summarises on a great day and learning experience:‘The BBC Good Food Show is a fantastic experience for the students. All of the food companies, food TV shows and chefs come together to celebrate their love of food. Our students get to taste lots of different foods and the whole experience broadens their horizons and knowledge of ingredients and cultural foods, as well as foods made for special dietary requirements. A great day was had by all.’

One Year 9 student said:‘I really enjoyed the day as we had the chance to wander around and see all of the different stalls. We also met Paul Hollywood!’

On Thursday 26th June, the most exciting event of the school calendar (as far as we PE teachers are concerned) took place: Sports Day

For the first time in years, the weather was perfect and the day went without a hitch. Staff and pupils alike were finely kitted out and many were proudly sporting their House Badges, which they had purchased, voluntarily, without menaces, from the Princes Trust Group.

All Houses had a full compliment of competitors and were in fine voice as everyone assembled on the field to cheer on the athletes.

If an award had been available for the ‘Loudest House’ or the ‘House with the most vocal captains’; then that award would, undoubtedly, have gone to Craig…but, alas, there was not.

The Sports Day Championship was a fiercely contested affair. There were winners on the day from every House colour and it was great to see an atmosphere of excellent sportsmanship, with whoever was the last to finish getting a louder and more enthusiastic cheer than the winners in many cases.

All pupils demonstrated why Sir Thomas Boughey has such an excellent sporting reputation throughout the County, with their exemplary attitudes and superb behaviour throughout.

Unfortunately though…there can be only one winning team…and the results after completion of all sporting events were as follows:

In 4th, with 759 points was Wilbraham

3rd, with only one point more, on 760, was Vernon

In 2nd, with 776 points, was Craig

And clear winners in the sporting events and Sports Day Champions 2014 were Heathcote House with a massive 834 points

Congratulations to all who took part, as it really was a fantastic day.

Climbing Experience for STB Pupils

Eleven pupils went to Kilnworx in Burslem, with Mrs O’Neill, to try rock climbing this term in a taster session the centre were delivering.

Megan Perry, Megan Jones, Alexandra Cope, Rachel Glover, Alex Parsons, Ryan Chapman, Alex Hollins, Jack Pitchford, Archie Doorbar, Freddie Doorbar and Kian Cooper learnt how to traverse across the wall, balance on an elastic beam and climb up several different routes. They finished with a competition between the boys and girls racing up and down a route, with the girls taking the victory in the first climb and a dead heat for the second climb.

All the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the session and the only complaint on the feedback form was that they would have liked the session to have lasted longer. The staff at Kilnworx commented on how well pupils performed and that they were a pleasure to coach.

Senior Boys & Girls

Awards are presented on Sports Day to pupils who the PE staff feel have gone ‘above and beyond’ in demonstrating excellent sporting values throughout. This year, there were several nominations for these prestigious awards and the winners were as follows:

SENIOR BOY: Liam Zwetsnikow

Liam did an excellent job as

the House Captain of Wilbraham House. He was

very helpful in the organising of the Wilbraham Team and was running around ensuring

that everyone was where they needed

to be for their events.

JUNIOR BOY: Aaron Evans

Aaron stepped up to the plate when others

from his House were unable to

compete in events. Aaron did an

extra two events, demonstrating the sports day values

of the school excellently.

JUNIOR GIRL: Alexandra Cope

It is unusual for this award to go to someone in Year 7 but Alexandra represented her

house brilliantly in several events and won many points

for her team.

SENIOR GIRL: Abbi Roberts

Abbi, representing Vernon house, volunteered to

step in for events when others did not show up. She

was also very encouraging to others and

helped the House Captains to

organise the team on the day.

Under 13 Girls Cricket

The Under 13 girls cricket team played in a Chance to Compete county tournament at Endon last week with Mrs O’Neill. They won both their league games and reached the semi finals but lost out to Painsley

Catholic College by one over.

Well done to Megan Jones (team manager), Esmee Holt, Shannon Fahey, Niamh Hartless, Leah Carvel, Nicole Turner, Fay Ashley, Katie Turner and Bethan Moore. 11

Olympic hopes for Lara!

Since the 2012 Olympics, UK sport and British Shooting have introduced talent pathway training to identify and coach athletes for the future Olympics.

On May 27th Lara Dale was invited to attend one of the four talent ID days at the National Clay Shooting Centre in Woking Surrey.

She spent the day being assessed and coached by Team GB members and coaches, along with the other 14-20 year old boys and girls from all over the country. She performed really well and has since received the fantastic news that she has been selected to go onto the GB Training Programme for Olympic Skeet.

This involves intensive training days at shooting camps in Surrey, Dorset and Hampshire, with the aim to make the team for Tokyo 2020.

Good luck, Lara! We will be rooting for you.

Parents as Partners

T he school will be open on one vital day of the Summer holiday, the 21st August. This is ‘Results Day’ - the day we can release pupils’ GCSE, BTEC and OCR National results to them. School will be open from 9.00am until 11.00am. Please come to the main entrance and the results will be available for

collection from the bottom corridor outside rooms 4-7. If you are unable to collect your results, there are two courses open to you: one - write a letter empowering someone else to collect the results; two - give Mr. Cumberland a stamped, addressed envelope and the results will be posted to you. The results slips will be needed by colleges to confirm the courses Y11 pupils will be following this September. The Entrust Careers Advisor will also be present to support and advise pupils. Current Y10 pupils are also welcome to come and collect their GCSE Science results.

Many staff will be present to explain the results slips and help celebrate the success of your children, our pupils.

Thank you for your continued support as we move to the last few weeks and days of the summer term. Time seems to go so fast, it certainly does not feel like over ten months ago the year started. Have a wonderful summer and enjoy the time together.

As you prepare for the next year at Sir Thomas Boughey, can I remind you that all children are expected to provide for themselves the basic stationery needed for a lesson, pen (blue or black but black is now essential for all GCSE exams), pencil for drawing diagrams, ruler for underlining titles and dates, a calculator for maths and science, and a rubber in case of mistakes. This helps staff have a smooth start to lessons rather than wasting time handing out stationery. Stationery is available to buy at very reasonable prices from Miss Hemmings in the finance office.

Y10 Newcastle-under-Lyme College Taster SessionYear 10 pupils attended a taster afternoon at Newcastle-under-Lyme College on Monday 23rd June and experienced what life at college would be like. They had the opportunity to experience some of the courses which will be available to them when they leave Sir Thomas Boughey. Pupils tried their hand at subjects such as Photography, Sports, Science, Graphics and Floristry and got to have a look around the college itself.

This annual visit proves to be invaluable to pupils, as for many it is the first time that they have visited a college, and it helps them to start making the decisions that will determine their future.

Year Eleven Celebrate in Style

T hursday 19th June was another important date in the Y11 calendar as this was the last opportunity for the year group to come together and celebrate

their achievements whilst saying goodbye. One hundred and fifteen pupils came to Crewe Hall to enjoy a rather plush meal, in fantastic surroundings, alongside their friends and staff too. It was a beautiful evening and our students arrived at school full of enthusiasm, but more importantly ‘for some’, they were dressed in their finest attire. Ladies were wearing an assortment of dresses from elegant gowns to big and brash American prom dress styles, whilst the gentlemen were in tuxedos or smart two and three piece suits; a spectacle to see, particularly when the variety of transport methods to school were exotic too.

As we arrived at Crewe Hall on the coaches, we were welcomed with a free drink and the pupils gathered their friends to find their tables. A three course meal followed and then a disco was conducted afterwards, and clearly, despite the expense of the outfits, there was plenty of dancing, by some of the staff too. Academy were there to take photographs, and after the compulsory tutor photos, the pupils selected who they wanted photos with, and gathered their friends altogether for large groups to keep as a memento of their time together, or alternatively, had an individual one taken to show off how smart they looked.

Even the disappointing World Cup football result didn’t dampen the spirits and, with the temperatures soaring, the Year 11s still managed to keep their top buttons done up!

This was the first time we have held the event at this venue and the pupils enjoyed it. It was nice to hear staff at the Hall compliment the conduct of Sir Thomas Boughey pupils and say they would welcome us again in the future.

A lovely evening with great company, good food, nice weather, what a pity the England result couldn’t follow suit!

Signal Radio Workshop

OOn Monday 30th June, we were once again invited to attend a workshop day at Signal Radio in Stoke. Year

9 tutors nominated two pupils from each of their groups to be recognised for their consistent hard work and positive attitude in school.

The pupils were split into two groups and this time we chose boys versus girls. Both teams had the opportunity to create a 30 minute radio show and a radio advertisement for the school.

As always, the pupils were a credit to the school and we had a fantastic day.

Natasha and Danielle: “We enjoyed being able to go to Signal 1 and have the experience of being a presenter”

Music Matters

Hello. Recently, I was asked to do a review of an album. This album is the brainchild of former pupil, Emily Jones and is called ‘Cloud Nine’. It includes four tracks.

The first song on the album is called’ Blue Sky’ and is marvellously assembled by Emily and Robbie Stewart (the violinist who offers his talents on the track). As soon as the first couple of chords sound through the computer, I’m immediately feeling good about this. The violin is beautiful in the background and wonderfully compliments the guitar and Emily’s amazing voice. The guitar is simple yet sounds brilliant and the harmonies (also done by Emily) are perfectly woven into the already complicated melody of the verses and choruses. Overall it’s a great listen!

The second song, ‘Thick & Thin’, is a feel-good song, with the lyrical content going along the lines of battling through the bad times and looking forward to the good. All of the instruments, this time: ukulele, guitar and some form of shaker are all brilliantly recorded and put together. I just want to say, I love the singing in this song! It’s very, very good! It has more of an upbeat feeling to it than the last track but still holds the same amount of emotion and punch to it. Another brilliant song and will surely get you singing along!

Third on the track listing, ‘Living by the Sea’, is more of a ballad. The best thing about this song is the infectious chorus; it’s extremely catchy and will get stuck in your head. The melody of it is the best so far, perfectly fitting the guitar chords (the only instrument in this song- but that’s all it needs). This song also shows that Emily’s voice is just as strong and confident without accompaniment and carries the song brilliantly, as for snippets of the song, she sings with no backing guitar. This album is absolutely fantastic so far.

Finally, the last song on the album, ‘Guitar Blues’, offers - wait for it - a blues song, with Naomi Bailey offering her drumming talents to the track. The generic ‘bluesy’ lyrics form yet another catchy chorus on this song; Again, Emily’s voice shines out on this track. The harmonies (like the first track) are well done and fit perfectly with the soundtrack. I rather like this track due to the nice, upbeat rhythm to it that provides the listener with a happy go lucky attitude.

Overall, this album is brilliant. I really love Emily’s voice, I love the guitar and the songs are all very good, promising great things in the future from her and her friends who have also contributed to this album. I can’t wait to review another piece of her work, as and when it becomes available.

A great album!
