The Strategic Investment Society (SIS) is one of the largest student-run organisations in The Chinese University of Hong Kong since its establishment in 1989. Our mission is to inculcate in our member a sense of enquiry and curiosity towards the investment and finance sector, as well as to render them better prepared for their future careers.

WithoutWithout any college or faculty affiliation, we take pride in the fact that our members are from a wide variety of background and are majoring in different programmes. The Strategic Investment Society therefore also serves as a platform for the exchange of ideas, through which the personal growth of our members is facilitated.

I have known Strategic Investment Society of CUHK for many years and was my honor to become the guest of several

inauguration held in the past witnessing the growth the Society. In the Investment World, the aim of creating an

exposure to asset classes is to pursue the maximum tangible return within calculated risk appetitive. Investment and

risks are two sides of a coin and go along with each other throughout the investment cycle. To secure your investment

return, it is essential to understand the basics of risk management covering macro and micro aspects.

InIn 2004, I have a chance to work closely the current cabinet members and have developed a solid relationship. The

Leadership Team of the Society has demonstrated the talent and the enthusiasm in investment subjects. Coming from

different academic streams and background, they have involved in my research project to study the factors and trend

of risks in Financial Services Industry in 2015 and beyond. They have learned with enormous speed and exhibited

good sense of analytical and reasoning skills. I am very impressed on the positive attitude of the members and students

who joined the seminar on recap of Financial Crisis and in-depth career talk to exchange viewpoints and facilitate

learning. “Everything challenge is a way to success”learning. “Everything challenge is a way to success”

PresidentPresident John Kennedy said” In a time of turbulence and change, it is more true than ever that knowledge is power

for only by true understanding and steadfast judgment are we able to master the challenge of history”. Lastly, I wish

the Society to achieve another milestone and deliver the best service for the members.

Strategic Investment Society (SIS) is instrumental in helping students to meet the future challenges in the business world.

I am honored to be a member of its mentorship program.

TheThe future of our community rests on the young people. They should have curiosity, courage and creativity to meet the

challenges. With curiosity, they will be able to understand new things and explore the new world. Courage will allow

them to think differently, to travel the unexplored path, to discover the impossibility and to conquer the problems. No

doubt, obstacles and setbacks are everywhere in a life journey, there is no panacea for these problems, but courage.

What is more, our society is getting more and more complicated and competitive. Young people should have the

power to create ideas and to think out of the box. These are all essential qualities of our future business leaders.

BeingBeing a practitioner in the field of communication for over two decades, I wish our new generation have one more

quality – communicativeness. The ability to communicate accurately, clearly and as intended, is a vital life skill and

something that should not be overlooked. Strong interpersonal communication skill will allow greater chance of

success no matter in personal or organizational capacity.

SISSIS reinforces my hope on our new generation. I am amazed by the students’ devotion and passion. Opportunities

are here and there. Seizing every chance to learn will only add more values on one individual. SIS is in the enviable

position to serve as a platform for the exchange of ideas and a vehicle to transfer knowledge.

Albert Einstein once said “wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it”. I wish SIS

every success in the future.

Through interacting with elite business leaders, our members would gain

practical knowledge about various business fields. Having heard of the

experience shared by our mentors, members would be one step ahead of

others. Instead of struggling what to do upon graduation, members can better

plan their career path.

The job shadowing programme provides members with an extraordinary

experience working with executives of different multi-national corporations.

Following the daily routine of a senior manager, members would have a taste

of the decision making process and heavy workload which senior managers

gone through every day. The programme would give them insight into how

businesses work in the real world.

JoiningJoining the mentorship program has been a rewarding experience. Its enriching programs have better equipped me for my ideal future career in the field of marketing and finance. Cognitive-wise, this program has widened my scope, allowing me to gain insight of different perspectives of the world. Opportunities and crises may arise, but with strategic thinking skills and risk management knowledge, one could certainly strive for the best outcomes. The practicalitypracticality entailed in this program could also be seen as one of its highlights. For example, I was given the opportunity to learn pragmatic interview skills and acquire problem-solving techniques, all of which could enhance my competence as a member of the future workforce. All in all, this program was a truly gratifying learning experience that further strengthened my determination and equipped myself with competitive skills, preparing myself for my future career.

ItIt has been my pleasure to join the SIS mentorship program and have Mr. Alan Leong to be my mentor. Though he seems remote, Mr. Leong is indeed a very amicable and energetic gentleman. He not only shows considerations and interests for our school life, but is also eager and willing to discuss hot issues with us. Our society may seem unstable and even hopeless sometimes, but it is encouraging competent professionals like Mr. Leong optimistically believes that withwith faith and determination our society could progress in the right direction. I am impressed to know the intensive working schedule of a Legislative Council member and their contribution to Hong Kong Society. To a certain extent, it inspires me to engage more in the society. Overall, besides providing career direction and guidance, this program has another valuable highlight - all mentors are such experienced professionals that they could coach you a lesson in life.

Government officials usually give people an impression that they are serious and reserved. Yet, Mr. Caspar Tsui is quite the contrary to this impression – he is humorous, energetic and willing to share his experience to us. We have met twice under the arrangement of Strategic Investment Society (SIS), which he shared with us the problems he has faced, providing us insight for our lives as university students.

ThanksThanks to the gatherings, I believe I have developed greatly in the aspect of personal development. Listening to his overseas study experience, he encouraged us to try to become an outspoken and active person. He recalled to the times where he was adapting to a new environment, and he would always participate in many school events to blend into their culture. Besides, he would sit at the front of the class and be daring to ask and challenge his teachers, whilst actively engaging in different student discussions in order to gain more knowledge. Most importantly, he taught us to bravely express our own opinions and be confidentconfident to disagree with others. Mr. Tsui’s tips were incredibly useful and I hope they could be shared to others, especially when local Hong Kong students are generally passive.

What’s more, he urged us to broaden our horizon and read more books. He advised us that only if we become knowledgeable in different areas, are we able to converse and discuss deeply in different topics with others, and expand our network.

He also gave us valuable advice upon our career paths. Since he has broad connections, he can portray a real and more accurate picture of the current job market, whether in the government, legal or commercial fields. After all, I have learnt to better equip myself and prepare for the opportunities ahead to achieve my dreams and goals.

I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to Mr. Caspar Tsui for being such a great mentor. Thanks to his advice and influential sharing, I have a clearer vision of my career path. I hope our connection will not cease and I am looking forward to once again hearing from him.

TheThe pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty. I felt very strong towards this quote as a committee member of the Strategic Investment Society. Throughout this year, we successfully organized various events, including inauguration ceremony, investment talk, investment workshop, celebrity talk, mentorship program, job shadowing program. Obstacles are what stop us from achieving high. But being a proactive and optimistic society, we deal every difficulty as opportunity, and it is by having this mindset that we overcome all the difficulties. II truly wish everyone can remember the quote aforementioned, and I truly wish by having this mindset we can have a smother life journey.

WhenWhen 16 university students put their heads together, there are bound to be problems. There are differences in stances, times when we are demotivated, novel ideas that we all thought were not going to work, to name but a few. These obstacles are daunting but they are by no means insurmountable. By overcoming the obstacles, we have grown and evolved.

TheThe biggest problem of facing obstacles is that you might not have realized that you are actually facing one. When we were preparing for the inauguration ceremony, we were blatantly oblivious that the student helper responsible for managing the lighting and sound was not familiar with the setting and the control. The ceremony would have gone so much smoother should we notice this problem in advance. We have learnt to pay extra effort in observing and we constantly seek out problems to tackle rather than letting the problems catch us off guard.

SomeSome problems take time and effort to solve. Our meetings were once really inefficient due to the fact that we were not familiar with the procedures for meetings. At that time, I modify the proceedings of our meetings with reference to the business meetings of companies. I set up a timetable for the gradual reduction of meeting time until we have reached the 30-minute target. Such persistent problems require careful planning and strict self-discipline, through which changes can be possible.

CreativityCreativity is the ultimate key to overcoming hurdles. Being creative is way beyond the cliché ‘thinking out of the box’; it is about making connections between new and old ideas. In March 2014, we were facing a huge problem. We had organised 3 separate events and we would like to promote them on our online platform, however we did not wish to overload our members with excessive promotion. Then, out of the blue, we realised that the 3 events could be described as different stages of learning how to invest, and therefore they could be promoted as 1 single event.

Most,Most, if not all problems are daunting and demotivating in nature and it is always easier to ignore a problem and pretend that you have overlooked it than to take the initiative to tackle it. Through tackling these problems, we have learnt to be more observant, to devise plans and apply self-discipline and to be creative. These obstacles force us to improvise and adapt, so that we might ultimately overcome them. They have also stimulated our growth into a stronger and more resilient team.
