1, 4-Dioxane•Ahidden,unlabeledingredientcommonlyfoundinplastic bottles, certain types of lotions, and shampoo formulas.•Knownasendocrinedisruptorsandcarcinogens.• Ingredientscontainingethoxylatedwettingagentsand solvents,manyfoamingagents,andemulsifiersmaycontain 1,4-Dioxane.Studiesshowitreadilypenetrateshumanskin. LookforingredientsendinginLaurethorethylene.

Fluoride•Usedintoothpastetohelppreventtoothdecay.•Variousanimalstudiessuggestthatfluoridecontributesto bonediseaseandmaybecarcinogenic.Inhigher quantities,fluoridecanbefatallytoxic.

Lanolin•Usedasamoisturizerinnumerousskincreams.•Naturally,lanolinisnotharmful,butisoften contaminatedwithharmfulpesticidesandharsh chemicalsthatareusedonthesheepwoolfrom whichthissubstanceisderived.Themajorityof lanoliniscontaminatedtosomedegree.

Mineral Oil•Usedinmanyskincareproductstosoftenor moisturizeskin,babyoilis100%mineraloil.•Mineraloilisapetroleumby-productandhas numerousnegativehealtheffects.Itdriesskinand clogspores,whichcanleadtoacneandpremature agingoftheskin.Italsoslowsdowndevelopmentof newskincells.

PABA (Para Amino Benzoic Acid)•Usedinsunscreensandasadietarysupplement.•PABAisacontroversialsubstanceoncethoughttobe essentialforthebody.Updatedresearchhasproven that it is not essential, and that it carries numerous potentialsideeffects.Siselhasdeemedthattherisks ofusingPABAoutweighanypotentialbenefits. SideeffectsofPABAincludedryskin,nausea andvomiting,depletionofVitaminD,andeven carcinogenicactivitiesincertainpeople.

Parabens (Methyl, Isobutyl, Ethyl-, Butyl-, Propyl-)•Usedaspreservativestoextendshelflifeandlimit microbialgrowth.•Parabensarestillusedfrequentlyeventhoughtheyare clearlyknowntobetoxic.Thesepreservativeshave beenshownrepeatedlytocauseskinrashesand irritation to the eyes and respiratory tract. Parabens are highlytoxicandcanbeveryharmfulifswallowed.

PEG (Polyethylene Glycol)•Usedincosmetics,shavingcream,andotherpersonal care items.•PEGisconsideredsotoxicthatindustrialworkersare requiredtowearprotectiveclothing,gloves,and goggleswhiledisposingofit.Itisapetroleumderivative thatpenetratestheskinandcanweakenproteinsand cellularstructure,causingbrain,liver,andkidneyabnormalities.

Polysorbates•OilyliquidsderivedfromPEG-ylatedsorbitan(aderivative ofsorbitol)esterifiedwithfattyacids.•Oftenusedincosmeticstobindessentialoilstowater- based formulas.• Couldcontain1,4-Dioxane(atoxinfoundinAgentOrange).•1,4-Dioxanehasthepotentialtocreatecancerous tumorsontheskinandinthebody.

Propylene Glycol•Usedinmoisturizers,shavingcreams,deodorants,and baby products as a humectant.•PEGcancausedermatitis,kidney,andliverdamage. Hasbeenshowntocausedryskin,rashes,andskin irritation.

Phthalates•Usedinnailpolishes,hairsprays,deodorants,and other personal care items.•Studieshaveshownthatphthalatesmaydamagethe liver,kidneys,lungs,andreproductivesystem,and maybecarcinogenic.•Foundalsoinsometypesofpackagingcontainersfor personal care and cosmetics.

Quaternium 15 and 51•Usedincosmeticsandpersonalcareitems.•Quaterniumisaknownallergenandcanrelease formaldehyde.Itcancausecontactdermatitis,aswell asthedangersassociatedwithformaldehyde.

Retinyl Palmitate•Usedinsunscreens.•RetinylPalmitateisanantioxidantthatslowsskin aging.Whenusedonskinexposedtosunlight,however,it demonstratesphotocarcinogenicproperties.Inother words,itcanresultincanceroustumors.

Talc•Usedincosmetics,babypowders,andfoot preparations, often as a dry lubricant.•Talcisaknowncarcinogen.Researchhasshownthat useoftalcinthegenitalareasinwomenleadsto60% greaterriskofovariancancer.

Toluene•Tolueneisapotentialcarcinogenandendocrine disrupterwhichmaycauseliverandrespiratory damage,aswellaspotentialbirthdefects.
