The Burial of the Dead(please stand)

    Presider:

I am Resurrection and I am Life, says the Lord.Whoever has faith in me shall have life,

    even though he die.

And everyone who has life, and has committed himself to me in faith,

    shall not die for ever.

As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives

and that at the last he will stand upon the earth.

After my awaking, he will raise me up;and in my body I shall see God.

I myself shall see, and my eyes behold him

who is my friend and not a stranger.

For none of us has life in himself,

and none becomes his own master when he dies. For if we have life, we are alive in the Lord,

and if we die, we die in the Lord.

So, then, whether we live or die,we are the Lord's possession.

    Happy from now on

are those who die in the Lord!

So it is, says the Spirit,

for they rest from their labors.

Presider: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you.

    Presider: Let us pray.

O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day

our sister Alice. We thank you for giving her to us, her

family and friends, to know and to love as a companion onour earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate

of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue

our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited withthose who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word (please be seated)

Reader: A reading from Lamentations Lamentations 3:22-26, 31-33

    The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases,his mercies never come to an end;

    they are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, says my soul,

therefore I will hope in him.

The Lord is good to those who wait for him,

to the soul that seeks him.

It is good that one should wait quietly

for the salvation of the Lord.

    For the Lord will not

    reject for ever.

    Although he causes grief, he will have compassionaccording to the abundance of his steadfast love;

for he does not willingly afflict

    or grieve anyone.

Reader: The Word of the Lord.

    All: Thanks be to God.

    Psalm 139:1-11 Domine, probasti

LORD, you have searched me out and known me; *

you know my sitting down and my rising up;you discern my thoughts from afar.

You trace my journeys and my resting-places *

and are acquainted with all my ways.

Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, *

but you, O LORD, know it altogether.

You press upon me behind and before *

and lay your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; *

it is so high that I cannot attain to it.

Where can I go then from your Spirit? *

    4

where can I flee from your presence?

If I climb up to heaven, you are there; *

if I make the grave my bed, you are there also.

If I take the wings of the morning *and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

Even there your hand will lead me *and your right hand hold me fast.

If I say, "Surely the darkness will cover me, *

and the light around me turn to night,"

    Darkness is not dark to you;

the night is as bright as the day; *

darkness and light to you are both alike.

Reader: A reading from the first Epistle of John 1 John 3:1-2

See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God;and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not

know him. Beloved, we are Gods children now; what we will be has not yet

been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be likehim, for we will see him as he is.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

HYMN #204 Now the Green Blade Riseth

Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

All: Glory to you, Lord Christ. John 15:1-5

I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine-grower. He removes every branch

in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear

more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to

you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itselfunless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the

vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much

fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.

Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord.

All: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Presider: We bless you, O God, for clothing us with light for the work of justice, and for

encircling us with your constant love. Bless to us all our actions and desires, andthe yearnings of our hearts.

Above all, we thank you for blessing us through your child Jesus, born of Marythrough the power of the Holy Spirit; and for sanctifying us through Jesus

Christ, who sat at supper with his friends and took bread, blessed, broke, and

gave it to them saying, "Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do

this for the remembrance of me."

After supper, Jesus took the cup of wine and said, "Drink this all of you: This ismy Blood of the new Covenant poured out for you and for all. Whenever you

drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

    Therefore we affirm in Jesus:

All: Your love faithful even to death,

Your power which raised Christ to life,

Your promise that Christ will come again.

Presider: And we lift up to you, along with our lives, these gifts of bread and wine. Sendthe fire of your Spirit upon them that they may be for us the very Body and

Blood of Christ. Enkindle in us also the light of your Spirit that we may show

you forth to all the world, that every corner of creation may be filled with the

radiance of your delight and design.

Send us forth, in the Name of the Three, in the enfolding of the One, in thecompany of the saints, to serve your people and offer you praise; through Jesus

Christ our Savior, today and always. Amen.

    And now, as our Savior

    Christ has taught us,

    we are bold to say,

All: Our Father, who art in heaven,

    hallowed be thy Name,

    Sister Alice Lorraine Reid, C.T.

    March 5, 1927 December 27, 2014

Sister Alice, born Shirley Lorraine Reid, was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba,

Canada. Always up for adventure, she spent two of her young adult years living

and working in London and hitch-hiking around the British Isles and western

Europe. She rejoined her family after they moved to California, where she met theSisters of the Transfiguration in San Mateo. She lived with her aunt Evelyne

Tookey who preceded her into the Community of the Transfiguration as Sister

Mary Evelyne, and who preceded her in death in June of 2014. Sister Aliceentered the Community in 1956. During her decades as a Sister she had a widelyvaried life. She cared for children at the then Bethany Home at the Convent while

also cooking for the Community and the children. She was on the staff of St.Dorothys Rest Episcopal Camp in Camp Meeker, California, and later served as

Director of the camp. She served in Sendai, Japan for 4 years. She served asAssistant Superior to the Community. She was Superior of the Community for 5

years. Her longest and probably favorite ministry began with Sister Teresa Martinin Ferndale, California. The two traveled all over the western states leading

retreats, workshops, quiet days, preaching, teaching and creating a vast networkof Associates who expanded and supported the ministry in countless ways. Except

for the five years she served as Superior, the remainder of her life was given tothat ministry, later centered in Eureka, and to a rich life of hospitality, spiritual

direction and diverse friendships. Active in local congregations and the widerEpiscopal Church, she influenced many people and lightened many burdens.

Sister Alice lived and breathed prayer that flowed from her delight in and deeplove of God. More and more, the words of prayer became irrelevant as the reality

of her relationship with Christ deepened and became more intense. If forced into

words, she would say that it was about Love, about Light.

She lived Gods love joyously, generously and fully. She wrote of her

final wishes: Whatever you do, celebrate my life. It has given me so much and I

am thankful. Send me off with a champagne toast!
