“In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey His commandments. For the love of God is this, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome, for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith…Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’” One day a sign

outside a church read ‘God gave us commandments, they are not suggestions.’ As we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, we are well aware of the Lord’s desire to give us His peace, to offer us His mercy. There are two requirements for this to happen, 1. We ask for His gift of peace and pardon and 2. We acknowledge our dependence upon the Lord to be so blessed. The ten commandments of Exodus were the requirement of the covenant. The great commandment of Jesus, love of God and neighbor allows me to focus more clearly on what I need to do. In both cases I must act. The question ‘how well am I doing?’ is answered when I look at the beatitudes of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount to discover that I am poor in spirit, meek, humble, working for justice, being a peacebuilder. Yes, love the children of God and keep His commandments.

“La señal de que amamos a los hijos de Dios es que amamos a Dios y cumplimos sus mandamientos. El amor a Dios consiste en cumplir sus mandamientos, y sus mandamientos no son una carga, porque el que ha nacido de Dios, vence al mundo. Y la victoria que triunfa sobre el mundo es nuestra fe… Llegó Jesús y poniéndose en medio de ellos, les dijo: ‘¡La paz esté con ustedes!’” El letrero de una iglesia decía: ‘Dios nos dió mandamientos, no sugerencias.’ Al celebrar el Domingo de la Divina Misericordia estamos todos conscientes del deseo de nuestro Señor de darnos Su paz, de ofrecernos Su misericordia. Hay dos requerimientos para que esto suceda. Primero, que pidamos Su don de paz y perdón; y segundo, que reconozcamos nuestra dependencia del Señor para poder ser así bendecidos. Los diez mandamientos del Exodo eran los requisitos de la alianza. Los grandes mandamientos de Jesús, amor a Dios y al prójimo me permiten enfocar más claramente lo que necesito hacer. En ambos casos debo actuar. La pregunta ‘¿Cómo voy?’ es respondida cuando me fijo en las bienaventuranzas de Jesús en el Sermón de la Montaña y determino si soy pobre de espíritu, dócil, humilde, que trabajo por la justiciar, que construyo paz. Sí, ame a los hijos de Dios y cumpla sus mandamientos.

In occasione della nascita di Cristo, gli angeli del cielo proclamarono la pace sulla terra agli uomini di buona volontà. Gesù stesso dice: “Vi lascio la pace, vi do la mia pace. Non come la dà il mondo”. Sul monte degli Ulivi, contemplando la maestà di Gerusalemme, Gesù, con le lacrime agli occhi e con il cuore

gonfio, rimproverò il suo popolo: “Se avessi compreso anche tu, in questo giorno, la via della pace!”. La pace è il dono apportato dal Redentore. Egli ci ha procurato questo dono per mezzo della sua sofferenza e del suo sacrificio, della sua morte e della sua risurrezione. San Paolo afferma: “Ora invece, in Cristo Gesù, voi che un tempo eravate lontani siete diventati vicini grazie al sangue di Cristo. Egli infatti è la nostra pace, colui che ha fatto dei due un popolo solo, abbattendo il muro di separazione che era frammezzo, cioè l’inimicizia”. Quando, risuscitato dai morti, si mostrò agli apostoli, Gesù offrì loro innanzi tutto la pace, prezioso dono del riscatto. Quando si mostrò a loro, disse ai suoi discepoli: “Pace a voi!”. Vedendoli spaventati e sperduti, li rassicurò dicendo loro che era proprio lui, risuscitato dai morti, e ripeté loro: “Pace a voi!”. Gesù ha voluto fare questo dono prezioso del riscatto - la pace - e l’ha fatto, non solo agli apostoli, ma anche a tutti quelli che credevano e avrebbero creduto in lui.
