Some experiences you can have only when living with someone. You have
a regular dinner companion, someone to share household responsibilities
with, someone to share your day's experiences with. No matter what therelationship, it can be fantastic.
But sometimes it's not. Your parent snores loudly enough to wake theneighbors. Your roommate prefers the floor for clothes storage as opposed
to a closet. Your spouse can't write "laundry detergent" or "olive oil" on thewell-displayed grocery list (not that my husband is guilty of any of these...).
That's why I did a double-take when reading today's Gospel. Jesus, in his
farewell discourse from John, declares that he and the Father will "makeour dwelling" with those who keep God's word. The Greek word for"dwelling" is mone. lt indicates that this is not temporary-it's not an
overnight camping trip or a two-week can-l-crash-on-your-couch situation.Mone intends a permanent home for God with us-not over us or next to us
or down the street. With us, within our very selves.
But hasn't God learned about roommates? Doesn't God know about thesnoring? about our sins and our brokenness? our unworthiness and ourdoubts?
I certainly can't explain God's choices. I can only rejoice that God has
decided to dwell with us in spite of our many flaws, foibles, quirks, and
outright sin. lt's the best experience of "living with someone" I can imagine.

de ar PAD Rf,
Recently I read that it's a sin to go to restaurants and stores on
Sunday because in doing so I'mforcing the people wha work there
n disobE the rule of thz Sabbath. Is that true?
Biblical tradition states that the Sabbath is the day thatGod rested from the labors of creation. Sunday is also theday we commemorate Christ's resurrection from the dead
and the inauguration of the new creation.
We rightly refer to Sunday, then, as the Lord's Day. Thisbeing so, it's important to make sure that we doeverything possible to keep the Lord's Day holy and
ensure that we reserve adequate time on Sunday forworship, rest, and recreation.
However, in today's world, many traditional activities,
social services, and family needs require some people towork on Sundays. In fact, many people have only theweekends to do the many errands and other activities thatsustain their families.
Our participation in such activities and services is not asin, nor does it mean that those who do need to workcannot find an appropriate way to sanctify the Lord's Dayand allow time for the worship, rest, and renewal that are
proper to the day.
For more information on this topic, see paragraphs 2184
through 2195 of the Catechism of the Catlnlic Church.
