What we need to do
Version Four November 2017
During the summer of 2017 we consulted on our plans to prepare the Wylfa Newydd site for construction.
In November 2017 we submitted our application to Isle of Anglesey County Council for permission to start these works.

Our application
We need to prepare the site for the main phase of construction with boundary fencing, formation of storage and compound areas, and road crossings to help us move people and equipment around.
We’ll also need to demolish some buildings and other structures on our site, and clear away trees and vegetation.
To do this, we propose to:
• create construction site compounds with laydown and material storage areas, and a Main Site Compound with car parks, welfare facilities and offices
• install two metre high fencing around our site’s perimeter and three metre high fencing around our compounds for safety and security
• demolish existing buildings, walls, gates, field boundaries and other above ground features. Reclaimed materials will be moved to storage areas to be re-used
• clear vegetation and field boundaries on our owned or leased land
• create a processing compound on site so that the land identified as contaminated with asbestos and non-native, invasive species such as Japanese Knotweed can be safely treated
• install a new vehicle crossing on the existing internal power station access road, and two crossings on Cemlyn Road. These are for construction vehicles moving to the north and south of the site from the site compound
• keep the existing access to Fisherman’s car park, Public Rights of Way (and footpaths including the Wales Coast Path) open. We anticipate that there will be times where temporary marshalling of public footpaths will be needed, to make sure workers and the public are safe. From time to time, we’ll also need to close Cemlyn Road for short durations. We will endeavour to minimise any disruption and make sure we communicate news of any planned closures in advance
• use specialist ecological fencing to protect reptiles and water voles, and protected species will be relocated. A small section of an existing watercourse to the south of the site will be realigned, and we’ll allow time for this diversion and planting to become established before species are reintroduced
We’ll complete all of this work in a way that minimises our impact on local communities and the environment as much as possible.
If for any reason permission is not granted to build Wylfa Newydd, we will restore the site to resemble its former condition. An indicative plan has been prepared to demonstrate how we could do this.
Timing
Our application has been submitted to Isle of Anglesey County Council. If it is approved, work will start in early 2018 and take around 15 months to complete. This work has been broken down into a number of phases, some of which depend on the weather and other seasonal requirements such as the bird breeding season.
By carrying out all of this work before we receive permission to build the Power Station, we’re able to reduce overall construction time by up to 18 months. We’ll also be able to limit environmental impacts resulting from these works taking place in parallel to other construction activities.

Working locally
Work would take place on weekdays and Saturdays, with the majority taking place during daylight hours. The workforce will operate in a single shift pattern, from 7:30am to 6:30pm on weekdays; and 7:30am to 1:30pm on Saturdays.
During peak activities we anticipate there will be around 80 construction workers on site at any one time. It’s expected that workers will travel to site from their homes within Anglesey and North Wales, and therefore won’t require temporary accommodation.
We estimate this will mean a maximum at peak periods of 55 cars into and out of the site daily between Monday and Saturday, and up to a maximum of 32 Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) in and out of the site daily between Monday and Saturday. The average number of cars and HGVs will be lower.
