FROM THE RECTORY

Dear friends,

With a mild winter and an early spring this year the harvest has started earlier than usual. Our Lammas (loaf-

mas) service at Sutton Maddock at the start of August traditionally marks the start of harvest, and in some

years it has indeed coincided with combine harvesters beginning to power up for the first cut. But this year

things were well under way in July and many fields were already reduced to stubble by Lammastide.

The main harvest thanksgiving services come when “all is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin”.

With four harvest services in the six parishes spread over the season (details in the Church News section)

some services are in mid-October. By then we can often see the fields green with next year’s sown crops.

Whereas decades ago, farmers would be slower to harvest and to plough and sow, nowadays with better

machinery and better seed, they can press ahead without leaving fields unproductive.

All this in our modernised, mechanised agri-business is a far cry from the situation for many farmers in

Africa. They work as hard, but without the resources and the climate to make for successful harvests. Over

recent years the Six Parishes have supported FARM Africa for our harvest appeal (and also received support

from the children and staff of Beckbury School).

In some communities FARM Africa supplies tools and training. In eastern Kenya they have been working

with farmers to breed goats that produce lots of milk, and teaching them basic animal healthcare and business

skills. The success of the scheme allows these farmers to sell the milk at the local market and buy their other

food.

In Uganda FARM Africa introduced farmers to a new variety of rice which can be grown on drylands and

hillsides around the traditional wetlands. They also give training in working together as a savings group to

provide loans to members to buy seeds and fertiliser. The local farmers now grow a surplus of rice and sell

the extra for their children’s schooling and books.

In Ethiopia the charity heard about disused water pumps standing dry close to houses because no-one knew

how to repair them. So FARM Africa formed a ‘water management committee’ to organise repairs and

maintenance and healthy sanitation, and now the pumps are operating and villagers no longer have to walk

long distances to unsafe water sources.

This is agri-business on a scale appropriate for these African rural communities. FARM Africa has been

working in this field for nearly 30 years, and last year for the first time reached 1 million people with

resources, advice and training.

St Paul wrote “God is able to give you more than you need, so that you will always have all you need for

yourselves and more than enough for every good cause”. (2 Cor. Chap 9, v 8)

CHURCH NEWS

Congratulations to our two smallest parishes for marking the Great War centenary:

At Badger there was a moving service on 27th July which included reading the names of those who went to

war from the village and came back alive; at Ryton there was a gathering at church on 2nd August with a

local history display, readings and popular songs, as well as food and drink. Our thanks to the organisers

and contributors at both occasions.

Stockton Church are arranging a Twilight Walk through Apley Park starting at 7pm Saturday 30th August

from Apley Lodge. Tickets £10 each including refreshments.

This is the start of the church harvest season: Kemberton has its service at 11am 14th September. Beckbury,

Ryton and Badger combine for their service at 11am September 21st followed by harvest lunch in Beckbury

Village Hall (tickets in advance from church members). Stockton follow the same pattern on 5th October

(tickets £7.50); and Sutton Maddock on 12th October, but also with a concert by the Darby Singers in church

7.30pm Friday 10th October. The Six Parishes harvest appeal is for Farm Africa helping rural communities

in East Africa.

In between the harvest services is the Apley Run at 2pm Saturday 27th September, postponed from March

because of the bad weather.

Deanery Synod meets at Sheriffhales Community Hall at 7.30pm 18th September to learn more about Food

Banks with a presentation by Anne Danks of the Trussell Trust.

Shifnal Church has a big Food and Flower Festival on the weekend 5th-8th September 10am-5pm (Sunday

1pm-5.30pm), admission £4. Their publicity speaks of “a breathtaking feast of colour, fragrance and design”.

Lichfield Cathedral hosts a Songs of Praise with the All Souls Orchestra at 7.30pm 27th September. Tickets

range from £12.50 to £25 from www.lichfieldgarrick.com.

CONDOLENCES

We extend our sympathies to the family of the late Roland Ford of Brockton, aged 82,

whose funeral service was held at Telford Crematorium on 22nd July 2014.

We also extend our sympathies to the family of the late David Owen of Lightmoor, aged 80,

whose funeral service was held at Beckbury Church on 11th August 2014.

LIGHTS OUT VIGIL

On Monday 4th August Beckbury residents joined with households throughout the country in taking part in

the “Lights Out” vigil between 10pm - 11pm where solitary candles were lit in windows to remember Britain

entering the First World War. A window in the church commemorating Major John Lloyd who was killed

at Flanders on 18th June 1915 was illuminated and a solitary lantern was placed on the war memorial.

BADGER, BECKBURY & RYTON HARVEST FESTIVAL

There will be a Harvest Festival Service on Sunday 21st September at Beckbury Church with displays of

flowers, fruit and vegetables in the Church, also a procession of children carrying baskets of harvest gifts

and readings by members of the farming community

After the service there will be a special harvest lunch, including wine, organized by the members of the three

parishes.

Tickets are available from members of each PCC at £8.50p each, children under 12 free.

BECKBURY WAR MEMORIAL

Beckbury residents will have noticed that the war memorial has been refurbished thanks to grants from

The Beckbury Show and The War Memorial Trust.

RYTON REMEMBERS

The Ryton Remembers afternoon on 2nd August was a most interesting session which displayed documents

and letters previously unseen of two main families. The Hartnell-Beavis family whose ancestor was Surgeon

General, displayed photographs showing what they had to achieve literally through mud and bullets. One

photograph I did not expect to see was Surgeon General Hartnell-Beavis with a patient being treated by

Marie Curie. We also saw battle plans used by ancestors of the Kenyon Slaney family and later heard Simon

Kenyon Slaney reading excerpts from a relative’s daily diaries recounting how the war was affecting the

lives of everyone at home, whilst Rupert read letters about his grandfather’s injury. Many people made the

difficult climb to the top of the bell tower, and here we must give apologies to the people who were deemed

not strong enough or correctly attired to make the arduous climb to the top of the tower.

Finally our thanks to Mrs Lesley Young who noted that only two names were on the local war memorial and

decided to find out exactly how many Ryton men were involved. It is quite a list, if you know of more

people involved please let Lesley know at the address given.

Men living in Ryton and Grindle who served in WW1. The list has been compiled from the 1919 Electoral

Roll and from the Service Records that can be found of the men on the 1911 census. If any relatives have

knowledge of any others I would be interested to have the information as many Service Records are missing.

SIX PARISHES FRIENDSHIP CLUB

After days of blazing sunshine we entered a period of uncertain weather, but on the day we visited “The Old

Post Office” in Beckbury the early morning showers disappeared and the sun came out. Twenty four

members arrived with their picnic bags and soon tables were groaning with cakes, scones and all the sorts of

pickies that you could ask for.

The garden was immaculate and Mrs Jenks and her daughter Susan were the kindest of hosts who made sure

that the tea pot never went dry. A special mention must also go to grand-daughter Isabella who worked

cheerfully and willingly throughout the afternoon.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 9th September at 2pm in Beckbury Village Hall for a game of bingo followed

by a bring and buy.

Can we remind members that at our October meeting in the village hall we shall be packing our Christmas

shoe boxes. Please do not throw your shoe boxes away, drop them off at Havenside to be covered in

Christmas wrapping paper or bring them along to the meeting.

one sited against the east wall of the church and a second one in the new churchyard against the far hedge

facing the church. .

COMPUTER TRAINING

ALBRIGHTON BROADPLACE

The Red House Community Centre, Albrighton

We are a friendly group of local volunteers who offer you the chance of learning or improving your computer

skills. Many of our ‘learners’ are absolute beginners. We normally run from 2pm to 4pm each Thursday

afternoon (2 x 1hour sessions), but during the school holidays we only run from 2.30pm to 3.30pm

(1 x 1 hour session).

Training is given on a one to one basis so you learn at your speed not that of a class, we work with you on

whatever you want to learn, it may be learning how to send emails or accessing the internet to open up a

whole new world out there. You may wish to look at holiday destinations or visitor attractions, do ‘on-line’

shopping or just look at what a shop may have to offer before you visit. There is so much one can do on the

internet, even just going on to the BBC website is a whole new experience. You decide what you want to

do and we will help you achieve it, age is no barrier.

You may have some experience but just require more help, possibly with photographs or ‘attachments’.

Quite often we can help with little tips on using your computer. You can either use our laptops or bring your

own.

Why not come along and see if we can help, the first session (1 hour) is free and if you wish to continue it

will only cost £2 per session, this charge is simply to cover the hire of the room. If you are undecided about

a computer and whether it is worth buying one, why not come and try out ours and see if you enjoy it before

buying. Be warned, it can become addictive.

RELIGIOUS STUDY ON THURSDAY EVENINGS

FROM SEPTEMBER AT ST ANDREW’S CHURCH, SHIFNAL

Living Faith (Bishop’s Certificate Course). For those who want to study the new Bishop’s Certificate

Course we will be starting afresh on 25th September – this course runs over a full year and is made up of

three, ten week terms. The course is led by Janet Lambourne, Revd Sally Day and Revd Roger Balkwill.

Going Deeper (our own local second year). For those who want to study further, we are planning a series

of short courses to run alongside Living Faith. This will be framed within a study of the Gospel of Mark,

the Psalms and the Parables of Jesus and will give time to go into particular themes in more depth. More

details will be available soon.

Questions of Faith and Life. If you feel like more of a beginner, this monthly discussion evening may suit

you. We meet on the second Monday of the month at 7.15pm starting with a simple bring and share supper,

and continuing with time to discuss any questions that people bring. We next meet on Monday 14th

September.
